Re. Glenn Gould and Bach - Bach composed most of his music on and for the organ - ponderous church organs. Gould started his musical life hearing his mother play the church organ and he learned to play it too. He was a native-speaker on the organ and a native speaker of Bach. That's one good reason why when people make comparisons between pianists playing Bach, in this case Debargue and Trifonov, Glenn Gould immediately comes to mind.

Re. Kantorow and Debargue - They are both fantastic pianists. They both have insight into the music and bring new interpretations to, say especially, Liszt's Trans. Etudes. However, they are both very young, as is Trifonov actually. They grew up with the recent emphasis on speed, magical fingerwork, and technical excellence - but they have not had enough time to develop their own styles, much less interpretations.
Trifonow does have a style and it's obvious he has thought about the style of each composer he plays . I just heard him play Prokofiev in an orchestral concert where he played Prokofiev as an encore . The sound was so different . Secco and strident but beautiful not harsh or really percussive . Each voice was clearly on its own tangent . He is not like any of us mortals . LeBargue I adore but his Bach is too much pedal to sound right to me as music. While hi Scarlatti seems some of the best . I might have to get used to his Bach the musicality is of the highest order !

Bach is deceptively difficult. I can play Chopin's etudes just fine but I still found this piece quite difficult to deal with. There's something about Bach in that way that's hard to pin down.

Lucas Debargue a intérêt à travailler d'arrache-pied sa technique si il veut conserver le premier niveau car ce n'est pas là sa plus grande qualité. Cette interprétation en est l'illustration
venus 241 comment ça travailler sa technique? Quels aspects techniques devrait-il travailler?
La main gauche. On ne l'entend pas assez en général dans ses interprétations, qui, à mon sens, manquent de puissance et bien que Lucas Debargue soit indiscutablement ce qu'on appelle un virtuose, je ne le sens pas suprêmement à l'aise techniquement et cela me gène. Lucas Debargue n'est pas Trifonov. Pour revenir à cette toccata, la lisibilité du contrepoint n'est pas assez affirmée en raison d'un manque d'indépendance et de clarté de la main gauche. La technique pour jouer Bach, cela se travaille spécifiquement. il faut écouter le disque de Gould, non seulement pour sa technique "contrapunstique" mais aussi pour les transitions ou il renvoie, stylistiquement et avec raison, à la musique élisabéthaine (quel génie ce Gould !)Donc Lucas Debargue à encore du travail techniquement et stylistiquement pour acquérir une vraie signature sonore, ce qu'il n'a pas encore. Ceci dit, je l'estime beaucoup et très notamment pour son admiration pour Scarlatti, dont j'attends avec impatience de voir ce qu'il fait. Ici quelques accrochages par-ci par-là mais ça n'est pas très grave. Il a mieux joué techniquement à Vienne.

Quant à Trifonov, je trouve que plus que sa technique ( qui est fantastique, certes ) , c’est son courage qui lui permet de sortir du lot. Tout comme Gould d’ailleurs. Pour comprendre de quoi je veux parler, il suffit d’écouter le début du chasse-neige de Trivonov et de le comparer avec celui d’Arrau.
Daniil Trifonov est devenu une institution à lui tout seul, désormais intouchable, comme Marta Argerich. Pourtant il n'y a aucun artiste, aussi grand soit-il, qui ne produise que de la perfection. Puisque vous citez les Etudes transcendantes, son Chasse-Neige me laisse froide. Ecoutez plutôt Alexandre Kantorow dans cette même oeuvre, ou Lucas Debargue dans la Xème étude. Trifonov reste dans la virtuosité, le son n'est pas très riche, rien à voir le souffle puissant, les abîmes de noirceur, de mystère et la démesure des interprétations de Debargue ou Kantorow.
