EMP Operative definitely should've been "Silence and Destroy a Mech". Some mechs had deathrattles, so adding the silence effect would make the EMP Operative be a catch-all remove-a-mech solution, but even then, it would've have been very good.
On your point about Crimson Expanse and its ties to Demon Hunter, I wish that Dormant was more strongly defined in its class identity. It just makes so much sense from a flavour perspective for a class with the literal mechanic of Outcast to have their minions being uninteractable for some time after they are summoned, especially given how Illidan was imprisoned (thus Dormant) for 10000 years.
Yeah, Dormant has always been in a wierd spot in HS, because they know it's a good enough keyword to not leave abandoned like other set exclusive keywords, but it's flavor is so narrow that most of the time, only DH & Warlock feel thematic for it.
I think half the time you forgot what the word 'specific' means. Both Crimson Expanse and Argent Watchman are just generically bad cards, but nothing is really 'specific' about them. Both damaged minions and hero powers are just things that happen organically in almost every match. A good fit for the list would have been Skulking Gheist, who was made specifically to target Jade Druids. Or either of the Hemet Nesingwary's (IIRC one kills a beast, and the other destroys all cards in your deck that cost 3 or less).
because he was actually playable - holding a dragon in your hand is not a condition, and legendaries are always common on the board, especially in some metas.
I was talking about this days ago with a friend we concluded that Rend is probably the most specific and one the worst cards in the game because of that.
If EMP Operative had been 2 mana, gain +1/+1, like the entire Golakka cycle, it absolutely would have seen a ton of play in Wild over the years. There's been a LOT of metas where mechs need to die, like before Mechwarper got nerfed and, uh, right now, with Unkilliax ruining lives. In fact, if it read "silence and destroy a Mech" it would probably be playable right now at 5 mana just to counter Unkilliax (a version of Zilliax that was recently released that is incredibly sticky and hard to remove without healing your opponent for 16 or more.
@@JordanMG I was shocked they didn't release one with Perils with all the new minion types and all the callbacks they made in that set and Whizbang. Maybe they were just waiting for Draenei.
there's a minion that's like "Battlecry: If you're holding a 4-cost card in your hand, deal 4 damage" or something like that, which is super specific, inconsistent and unnecessary for mediocre stats

It's like how joust could have been good but a lot of the pieces were built opposite how you wanted. I'm glad to see how often MarkMckz is referenced in your videos for actual use cases. Lol
Being dormant for one turn decreases the combo potential of crimson expanse in one way but in another way it makes the combo potential really strong since it guarantees the minion will be on board at the start of your next turn, allowing for >10 mana combinations before turn 10.
I climbed to legend with Crimson Expanse a few times, back when there was that naga that could cheat out an Illidari, and All Fel Breaks Loose. Crimson was really good for that.
I'm going to add Azerite Elemental, Against all Odds, Dread Raven, Grimtotem Buzzkill, The Lobotomizer, Posse Possession, and Master of Ceremonies to this list
While Furnace elemental is weird, Warrior got Forge of Souls in the same set I believe, and and Charge also existed in wild. While not consistent I remembet it being a funny otk
Currently theres a bomb deck running Crimson Expanse and Carnivorous Cubicle to summon many more copies of testing dummies and safety experts thats pretty fun to play.
One very fun overly specific card is Grave Shambler. It can be a +1 Attack Yeti if you destroy a weapon and then it threatens to get +1/+1 if it lives like 2 turns. Compared to like Hench Clan Thug, this card is atrocious. Love me some of those KoFT weapon synergy cards.
Why EMP Operative over Hemet Nesingwary? Also shocked Ice Cream Vendor isn't even on the list. That card's like the king of overly specific trigger conditions.
Forget Hemet, Rend Blackhand is the king of obscure removal minions. Only kills legendaries, bad stats for cost, AND requires a dragon in hand to even kill said legendary.
ice cream peddler was used in shudder shaman in wild for a while. You could gain an obscene amount of armor and just deny your opponent any form of winning
If you do this again, a good one is Roosting Gargoyle. That's neutral 2 mana 2/3 from Castle Nathria that gives a Beast +2 attack. That's one of the most "Huh?" cards in recent memory. It's not even a Beast itself. Why was that made?
Hey Jordan, loved the video! Also your question about the dormant for 1 turn thing being a demon hunter thing, here’s my take on it (although I agree it’s weird) Demon hunter came out in Ashes of Outland, the same set as most of the dormant for 2 turns cards (you mentioned antaen and magtheridon). But also lore wise, demon hunters were magically imprisoned (they were essentially dormant) and they have an ability in wow that imprisons enemies like they were (making them dormant) Idk that’s just my thought on it. Thanks for highlighting a bunch of cards i definitely forgot about
for the 4th card, the punisher ironically, I'm just imagining playing at that time being f2p, you finally see there's an epic card in one of your packs and you get super hyped. Then you flip it over and it's that garbage card. Reminds me of how the only legendaries I opened back in the day were gvg Hemet and Boogeyman, I am not joking.
same idea goes for the other epics. I guess it was called boogeymonster but whatever. Also I remember opening that trash legendary that's like a 7/7 for 8 that gained +1/+1 at the start of your turn or something like that, no idea what it's called but this was around the time that the 7/7 for 4 got printed smh. Why do they make so many terrible legendary cards?
Dormant usually (in flavor) refers to things sleeping or locked/chained. So in crimson expanse. It's kinda like frankenstein. Make another copy, but ya gotta revive it for next turn.
Deathaxe punisher could be interesting if they lowered the mana cost and made it blood dk card. Maybe they could rework it to say "give a random lifesteal weapon in your hand +2+1" or something.
I remember playing Wailing Soul in silence priest with decktracker and checking the site for stats later. There were days it has 100% winrate because I won 1 the single game I played that day
Dormant is kinda a demon hunter thing, think of Illidan lore and being “dormant” (imprisoned) for 10K years, also dormant was introduced with Ashes alongside DH, and actually a 3rd thing DH has been mentioned along side crystals multiple times, soul shards in Scholomance, soul fragments from the DH weapon in March, I’m sure there more like you could say a crystal/gem could be a type of relic. Overall I think flavor wise it fits really well,
Maybe the point of the life steal hand buff, is if you want to focus on lifesteal minions, and you you keep that You can ensure one of your lifesteals gets the buff
Emp operative was at least a card that has a clear use and was put into the set with a reason in mind. "Oh if these mechs cause a problem then we have some safety valve in place for it" Argent Watchman could have been a good card but it suffered from GvG/early Hearthstone problems of just being too weak. If it was a 5/5 for 2 with that stat line it might have been okay to put generically into a deck but might have made Watcher/Handlock Warlock too strong in that era.
I really like these random cards. I'm not a huge fan of every expansion having a pre-built deck for every class when it could be more random cool cards to experiment with and find your own combos with.
I agree. I doubt theyll switch back but it seems like they make decks more than cards now a days. Although theres examples of really old sets where that ended up being true anyway so who knows

Furnacefire should have said: Eat all weapons in your hand and gain their stats. For each weapon consumed, draw a card. Then atleast, it wouldn't dismantle your handsize.
0:26 meme counterpoint: Mark once used it to destroy his own minion. Which one? forgor. When? i feel like a week or so after it came out. ->later into the video, most gameplay about these cards is either so old yt was decent with the amount of ads or is a convoluted Mark combo
My theory is that Deathaxe Punisher gave a random minion in your hand lifesteal and +2/+2 but it ended up being too strong so they nerfed it to what it is.
Not sure what that card name’s is, but paladin got a 3 mana 3/3 that hand buffs your minions and has a weird condition. I’d argue it belongs here. It’s from PiP
I'm convinced Argent Watchman was suppose to be 1 mana then they thought it would be too op so put it at 2 to kill it cause it being the same cost as the hero power makes 0 sense
Furnacefire Collossus feels like a card that was designed for decks that run too many weapons that clog their hand up with them or such, but it has many problems: - The high cost and big stats make it too weak to removal while making the weapon stats not as relevant as they would be on a smaller, cheaper minion. - You discard ALL weapons FROM HAND. If you run lots of weapons but have one you care about equipping in hand, playing it takes precedence over this clunky minion and any weapon you might be holding is wasted. These issues are problems a card Shadestone Skulker doesn't have, which is also a sort of "weapon declogger" in a different way. I wish these design ideas were touched on more in Rogue, as it is a weapon class with a Hero Power you can't use when you're building around weapons and that's always been annoying me.
Argent Watchmen should be a 2 mana 3/6 or even 4/6, or should be buffed to 1 mana 3/4 in Caverns of Time. Better miracle salesman. Go to the moon, 0 mana 2/3 for even decks (with charge)
The argent watchmen was a good useless card to throw to play against Rafaam in the solo adventure when he steals your deck. And being a rare, it feeds/buffs the spear the player gets
My favorite obscure, unusable card is Proving Grounds, personally. what is the use case for this card? like what were they intending it to do, I guess summon two deathrattles to maybe die? I used it in a dumb deck where I summoned two Troll Centurions to deal 16 to the opponent's face because that's the only thing I could think of that's specifically enabled by it. but what were they cooking lol
To defend the inspire card, offensively, it's hot garbage. Defensively, more interesting. Opponent plays Bloodfen Raptor, I play Argent Watchman, and now there's a mindgame; if I have nothing better to do, I can clear the 3/2, leave myself with an atrocious 2/1, but still, a 2/1. So, it might be better for my opponent to overpay to remove the bad minion, even if I'm not intending on Hero Powering.
Argent Watchman isn't overly specific (using your hero power happens all the time), it is just bad. All this downside for 1 extra health? The card would be good with enough stats but 2/4 is just a joke.
EMP Operative makes sense. Golakka Crawler destroys a tribe that has low cost minions. EMP Operative not only can destroy high cost cards, Magnetize is also a unique Mech thing so it's also possible more Mana was spent to buff a Mech, making EMP Operative's Battlecry even stronger. In order for the tech card to not be a blowout they made its cost high.
That 9 mana 10/10 charge can't attack. Literal waste. No minion tribe, its a legendary?? (sucks if you open it from a pack) People will play this one time for one giggle and never seen again
It made sense when it came out, since Rush wasn't a thing and wouldn't be for another three years. Still terrible, but it makes more sense as a legendary.

->later into the video, most gameplay about these cards is either so old yt was decent with the amount of ads or is a convoluted Mark combo
Dude i love crimson expanse
Yea its cool
My theory is that Deathaxe Punisher gave a random minion in your hand lifesteal and +2/+2 but it ended up being too strong so they nerfed it to what it is.
Interesting!
Not sure what that card name’s is, but paladin got a 3 mana 3/3 that hand buffs your minions and has a weird condition. I’d argue it belongs here. It’s from PiP
Furnace fire otk decks are fun
Certainly looked like it
I really wish Shadow Word Forbid would destroy ALL 4 attack minions (wherever they are)
LOL please let me destroy theotars everywhere
desert obelisk, defias cleaner
that random mech hunter support in galakronds awakening.
why is there like 7 tech cards in descent of dragons
Sometimes i like when they make cards for the memes.
Jordan winning games with Shadow Word Forbid in his deck, card clearly broken
Now the new 42 health card should make this list
The...the what!!
@@JordanMG mystified To’cha
I'm convinced Argent Watchman was suppose to be 1 mana then they thought it would be too op so put it at 2 to kill it cause it being the same cost as the hero power makes 0 sense
Maybe, that's a great theory 🤔
Furnacefire Collossus feels like a card that was designed for decks that run too many weapons that clog their hand up with them or such, but it has many problems:
- The high cost and big stats make it too weak to removal while making the weapon stats not as relevant as they would be on a smaller, cheaper minion.
I guess for that prince dude who has infinite infuse
Crimson Expanse synergizes with the current standard mech/deathrattle warrior...
to massive success surely
My boy Chump!
Mechathun and poisonous minion is the only thing I've seen been done 😂
I wonder where skulking geist is. It was specifically made to destroy jade idol. Nothing else
Ew, even that 5 cost 3/3 destroy mech is an epic. 1/4th for card disenchanting love it
“Demon hunter isn’t real” God I wish
😂
Actually, only light's champion and EMP Operative are realy odd
The other ones are even
REND BLACKHAND
Yea if I do this again that's a perfect card
To defend the inspire card, offensively, it's hot garbage. Defensively, more interesting. Opponent plays Bloodfen Raptor, I play Argent Watchman, and now there's a mindgame; if I have nothing better to do, I can clear the 3/2, leave myself with an atrocious 2/1, but still, a 2/1. So, it might be better for my opponent to overpay to remove the bad minion, even if I'm not intending on Hero Powering.
i mean sure - the 4th health is the only thing its got going for it
13:43 did I hear runescape?
Can you define what you mean by specific? Argent Watchmen is a very bad card but I don't see how its specific
Gotta hero power to make the card textless
Argent Watchman isn't overly specific (using your hero power happens all the time), it is just bad. All this downside for 1 extra health? The card would be good with enough stats but 2/4 is just a joke.
EMP Operative makes sense. Golakka Crawler destroys a tribe that has low cost minions. EMP Operative not only can destroy high cost cards, Magnetize is also a unique Mech thing so it's also possible more Mana was spent to buff a Mech, making EMP Operative's Battlecry even stronger. In order for the tech card to not be a blowout they made its cost high.
1:46 39k DUST????
I finally just hit the button I stopped caring enough to min-max
Oh, I forgot to comment...
Ah, you mean Icehowl from TGT.
no star aligner is evil...
Star Aligner gets away with it because its whole flavour is that it triggers when the stars align.
I thought about it - that card was super broken 😂
