    Well put with all of it! I did gift cards the first couple years I tattooed and it always sucked across the board. Sometimes people would come get a tattoo, you expect a certain amount of income that day, then they throw down a gift card from 3 years ago. And sometimes you’re stuck doing a tattoo you otherwise wouldn’t have done because its paid for

      Oh yeah I totally forgot that part of it, working all day knowing u already spent the money many months ago, or getting surprised at the end. It kinda fucks up the reward system we got going when we tattoo. We know logically that we got paid for our service, but it feels like we didn’t lol. Thx for adding that

      @@JamesWithee that would suck. It would feel a little like you got cheated. I was grateful my guy did them. But I only asked for like 3 hr sessions so I hope it wasn't so bad for him.

    Another good video... and on a topic I've never thought about. You're creating an impressive portfolio of video essays. If you ever get an itch for a change of scenery so to type, you could easily be a speaker at conventions, etc. (if you don't already do this). You're good at it.

    I personally agree with you. Also the person receiving the gift certificate might not like the type of tattoos that the artist does and they might be pressured into getting something they never really wanted or they might ask the artist to do something they are not keen about doing. A gift certificates would be a great ldea if the person receiving it is already your customer. But then it might be problematic if you claim to offer gift certificate but it’s not available to everyone. So yeah you’re right in refusing to do that.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some excellent points. Getting a tattoo is a big commitment and picking your own artist is a crucial part of that. If the gift giver doesn’t know who the receiver prefers it could be complicated. Sometimes people buy certificates for a person that’s never been tattooed before too and that could make them feel obligated to get a tattoo when they weren’t rdy yet. It’s a big clusterfuck of what ifs unless it’s already a current client.

    this is an interesting perspective, seeing as loads of tattooers I follow on insta have really been pushing gift certificates recently as it's pretty much their only way to make money! we're still in lockdown in my country, so tattoo shops haven't been open for months :(

    Thanks for making this video james, you pointed to some things that make a lot of sense and although i dont get mamy requests for gift certificates i have never offered them either but i agree and think ill be steering clear of offering them all together and just keep shit simple.

    My buddy's girl got him a gift certificate for his birthday. He went in a month later and the artist had bailed. The shop tried to track her down but didn't find her. They wouldn't honor the gift certificate. But I think they worked out something where they did a deep discount. Mainly because the work he wanted was lucrative and was going to expand into an even bigger project. Luckily they had another artist there that had similar specialties. But yea, that's another reason not to do them. Not only can the artist and shop get screwed. The client can too. I've heard of that happening a couple times where the artist bails or moves location and doesn't contact their entire client list.

    If a gift certificate is lost than I would think they'd still have to provide proof of purchase. When my guy let me do my "lay-a-way" (which was essentially using a gift certificate- I just trusted that he wouldn't screw me if I paid in payments upfront until it was paid in full & once it was paid in full-instead of just the deposit- he would then let me schedule my 1st session & we'd go from there, same as anyone else) I paid via my debit card so I had my bank statement with the notes sent per transaction.
    I think, as mentioned in the comments, the example you provided at @13:30 is about the perfect example for using them. Or even variations thereof. Taking them towards projects already accepted by ppl- clients- that you already know or have good reason to trust.

    You could do gift certificates that are offered as a per project kind of thing. Even as a promo so it wasn't something you did with every client. It could even be a word of mouth kind of advertising.. wherein once you've agreed to take on a consignment you could accept gift cards towards that consignment. So a person could tell his friends "Hey, for [enter gift giving holiday/tradition here] I really would appreciate help paying towards this tattoo & you could gift me gift certificates from [enter artist name here] at [enter shop name here] & they'll know what you're talking about they'll accept any amount below the current estimated price quote plus a [enter 10, 15, 18 or 20%] tip & they'll tell u once the limit has been met. So there's no over paying or anything." And then bam! Badass tattoo met & beautiful gift given & no remorse at being stuck with ppl or projects you loathe.
    I mention it because my tattoo artist was super cool & let me do mine on a sort of lay-away-plan. I really suck at saving money but I make pretty good money so I asked him, since he was booked out thru the winter & preferred to be able to take spur of the moment walk-ins during tax time in hopes of getting ppl to put down deposits or pay up front for scheduling so I agreed to wait until after to start mine if he'd let me just call in every week & pay what I could until I met the fee/per hour for the approximate total cost of the entire tattoo & I agreed to bring in another few hundred dollars in case we went over the estimated time frame (he said it wouldn't be by much) & I said that I would & that he could have it as a tip if he got it done as quickly as he thought he would. Bingo! Bargain struck. I honestly wouldn't have, likely, gotten it done if he hadn't let me pay like that. I knew I wasn't going to settle for another artist either. I had been looking & watching portfolio's around the country for a few years in the places I most often travelled to (& a few I was willing to travel to if I found the right artist). I was more like to stick to my payment plan that way, too, ($5 a week😂.. I legit paid way more than that a week, tho. That was just the minimum to keep it active in the event I lost my job or to notify him that I died if payment suddenly stopped because no one would have known to tell him.) He also agreed to give the money back in the event of an emergency, which we outlined in advance what would have constituted an acceptable emergency for us both. I had none, thankfully. I also agreed not to tell anyone about our arrangement in the same conversation as I gave him credit for the work😂. No contracts, just trust & communication. I have no doubt that it was something he likely did not do for other ppl. When I 1st asked at the shop about such an idea they totally turned me away😂 I paid, I think, 3 consultation fees before he would even entertain the idea.😂 But I am & always will be so super grateful to him for not only his kindness & his trust but most certainly his beautiful artwork.
    Now, hopefully, the artist that I've just emailed about commissioning my dream piece will let me do something similar.. for the work I've dreamed of having done for approximately 10+ years & have spent thousands of hours of research on.. *fingers crossed* that he can answer a few questions I have the way I hope he will & that he'll agree to the work & to the terms I'd like to set or be able meet me in the middle & still do the piece (or be able to tell me if he doesn't feel he's the one & perhaps offer a suggestion as to who might be able & willing to do it if he isn't my man) he will be tho

    Dude I totally feel you on not giving out certificates because there's some jacked up people out there, plenty of assholes was stupid ass ideas for tattoos and you definitely don't want to have to deal with them.
    I don't know if you agree but I know for me I need a kind of chill kind of person to do my tatttlloo because I can't handle someone with frenetic energy. Those kind of people wear me out.
    I am a pretty chill type of person so my tattooer word needs to be a chill kind of person as well. I think your energies have to match.

    If I ever were on the receiving end of a tattoo gift certificate I would tip fat af so the artist didn't feel like it was wasted time since the tattoo money was probably long gone. Also me... the ink on the gift certificate probably wouldn't even be dry before I was using it either 😂 Added bonus I am loyal to a particular shop and they already know me well... Come to think of it...I should see if they DO sell gift certificates cuz we have a back piece we're about to start and my bday is around the corner 🤔 Now you got me plotting James LOL 😂
