    Back in the 80's I had an MCS-51 which was an Intel 8051 trainer. It had a similar layout and a prototyping section for doing all types of experiments. I wish I still had it. I did a ton of soldering (saudering) at the time populating boards for my employer. I think I got pretty good at it.
    Your PAL1 looks very nicely done.

    I built a PAL-1 earlier this year. I also added the Tape interface card. It all seems to work but for the read function of the Tape interface. I still have to get back to it on that bit. It was such a cathartic process building and getting it running. I ended up mounting the whole kit on a piece of clear acrylic.

    I love when people make stuff like this. It's alway goes the same way, we solder, then we spend absolutely ages debuging. But you've come out of it with some really nice boards. Keep up the good work, I'm really enjoying your videos.

    I just built the PAL-1 yesterday, it mostly worked first time, except for the Stop and Reset keys. I went back with a magnifying glass and looked at all the solder joints and found two that needed rework and then everything worked fine. I have built 3 retro computer kits now and feeling more confident I could handle more challenging kits now.

    Watching you young ladies being so enthusiastic about electronics my age is amazing :3 ! ! Building kits just for the kick of it, not even running anything. Then even debugging / bodge the circuits with almost no electronics experience really is NEXT LEVEL !! So darn well done !! CONGRATULATIONS !! And keep up the energy :D

    I tried for decades to solder with a Radio Shack 35w pencil iron with no luck at all. I could never get the tip to heat up hot enough to do more than make a terrible cold solder joint if even that.
    And then I got a new TS100... FET temperature controlled pencil iron, solder tip cleaner, solder tip silverer, good Kester solder, watched some PaceWorld Videos oldest to newst backwards, and everything changed. Now I can actually solder worth a flying flip. I'm not an expert, but it actually works now for the most part, at least with small wires that don't sink a lot of heat.
    You really got to keep your tip clean, like I clean mine off after every two joints or splices, to keep that black oxidizing stuff off or the heat does not transfer. The silvering tip cleaner pretty much changed things for me I would say, and having a soldering iron that could heat up within half a minute to some serious hot degrees.

    Nice job! Great video. The PAL-1 is a work of art. Anyone that wants to experience a KIM-1 (there so few left) can experience them with the PAL-1, plus have the satisfaction of knowing they built it from a kit. PS i think the unexpanded PAL-1 has 5 Kb or ram available.

  • @grounded-b937
    @grounded-b937 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    another soldering tip, is to keep your TIP clean.... Have a damp sponge handy and wipe all the skudge off the soldering iron tip every two joints, or so.

    • @SpeccyMan
      @SpeccyMan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better still keep your tip clean with brass sponge.

    I am experiencing a Déjà Vu. (this always goes with the companying music of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, a law firm I guess) Taylor and Amy are soldering a KIM-1 together. I've watched it and since I like the KIM-1, I have enjoyed it. For any reason I forgot the give it a thumbs up. And Now YT is suggesting this movie again, so I can watch it again and then this time I mustn't forget to give a compliment. In the Old Days YT showed a red bar under the movies I have seen, it's gone, now I can relive all experiences from the past, wait, oh no, Carry On.

    I finally broke down and bought a "proper" soldering station (HAKKO, if you care) and suddenly I found I could solder good! All those years with crap soldering irons (and probably crap solder as well) and I thought it was me that sucked at soldering.

    • @decuser

    When soldering a large socket or a connector - solder one corner on one side, then the opposite corner on the other side; stop and check that the socket is flat on the board. With connectors, solder the first and last pin and check that it is flat on the board. Then solder all the other pads.

    Great video and great job!!! I've only started soldering a few months ago myself. I also learned by watching many of my retro guys like Jan Beta and Adrian Black and a newer guy, Wolfgang from Retro is the new black. I have soldered two 1084 monitor power switches which I felt OK doing because they are big wires to the switch that you do exactly the same as I did to take the bad switch out. I still need to do a CPU socket on my Commodore plus/4, but I don't want to ruin an almost 40 year old piece of retro history. I bought 3 beginner soldering kits off of Amazon for under $10 each and I'm working on those first.
    On what you said about wanting to try CPM you should look into getting an Commodore 128. This 8 bit machine has two different CPU's (8501 @ 1MHz for C64 mode, the same 8501 @ 2MHz for C128 mode and a Z80 @ 4MHz for CPM mode). The C128 is like having three computers in one.

    AFAIK, the RC2014 is supposed to be like the Altair and … one of the reasons people liked the Altair so much was it let them get one piece working and start a new part. SBCs you work on the one thing till it works. But in your case once you had the technique down, looks like you've just run with making lots of fun toys I totally am jealous of. 😄

    I'm not able to get a serial-connection. I connected a FTDI-Board with 1200 baud, press RS on the PAL-1 and nothing happend. What could be the problem? Is a serial-connection only possible with an extension-board like ROM?
