I think Bruce Allen has proved himself as one of the best managers in the world. I remember years ago when a lot of people bad mouthed him for being tough and not always nice. If it wasn't for his passion and love for music, the world would not have heard his amazing artists that have given all of us so much joy.
That was interesting, but he contradicted himself sometimes. He would go on about having to live your life for an artist, to wake up and spend your whole life working towards that artists' goals, then he talked about how crazy the music industry is and how he had to take his mind off of it and focus on other business ventures. He said that success is all about a good song and drive for success, then he said it's a gamble, it's about taking risks. He said not to go for businesses just because they represent acts that you want to be associated with, then he said the opposite.
It is and has always been the dichotomy of the music business. Those who were in it only for the art, are the true champions and name will live on, in some cases, for ever. It's Bruce's job to be the opposite, to be Mr business. All business. Find the right song, promote it properly, promote the artist and do everything to make it big. It's why Allen is so famous and so successful. And yet, he also could just do what's right, because he was so relentless. The last 12 years of Anne Murray's career were her happiest, and she didn't even have a hit single. He made sure that she got everything she wanted, especially time with her family, and he turned her into the Canadian Bruce Springsteen. Every city, venue, place. When he called, she got it. Until she had enough money, and retire on here terms with enough money to live a good life.
indeed but Prism was always a revolving committee kind of band with no one single persona, no one singular talent. Was mostly local area musicians of note, assembled - or more like coalesced into a band on a kind of hunch. Coalesced does not make for a strong foundation. You could say in a way that Prism became Bryan Adams from a songwriting point of view via Jim Vallance, or helped Bruce Fairbairn get established from a production point of view. Bruce Allen may be referring to Prism when he talks about some of the mistakes made along the way. You could compare Bryan Adams to Ron Tabak and speculate on what might have been if Bryan Adams had become the singer of Prism. BTO was focused, Loverboy was focused. Bryan Adams was focused. Prism was not particularly focused.
