What do you think of this tutorial? Too much? Too long? Not nearly long enough? Let me know if this video is helpful and if you'll try to build this medieval gatehouse in your Minecraft world.
To be honest, this seemed a bit long for a tutorial.., ⏳🤔 Perhaps consider splitting anything longer than 30mins into multiple parts, rather than editing down and losing content. 🚫🪓 Keep up the good work👍
I play minecraft by building custom villages, and moving and making a new one and repeat, while connecting them all. so ill be referencing all your videos a lot! wall designs and gatehouse designs are fantastic
Fun redstone trick: If you lock a villager's trades so they only accept one kind of item, you can use skulk sensors to detect when they offer a trade. This means you can have a villager activate a redstone contraption like a gate or door if you show them a specific item!
I’ve done a lot of experimentation trying to make murder holes and I never once came across the design you have. It’s way better than anything I thought of
there are too many channels that focus on monumental but unrealistic Minecraft fantasy builds but you're one of the few channels I've seen so far that puts an emphasis on realism and historical accuracy. You manage to combine your expertise on medieval architecture with Minecraft's building capabilities as well its limitations. That is quite the feat!. Consider me subscribed, haha. May I ask where you got your knowledge about medieval architecure from?
@@dudieboy Nice! I would have figured you for a historian or architect. As for the length of that video: I mean it's not like you were just showing different ideas for furnitute but a pretty complex structure and gave in-depth explanations on the thought processes that lead to those exact designs all while keeping it entertaining. The length of that video is perfectly fine given the content. But I won't be building a gatehouse in the near future as I was merely using your wall designs for my city walls and not for a castle. So instead of a gatehouse I placed 3 different city gates with twin towers and varying defensive measures depending on the probability of an enemy attack with the main gates having the strongest defenses and the gate leading to my base the weakest. But I did notice some similarities which is the main reason I also watched this video. What I'd be interested in personally would be your concept of medieval barracks. I built some recently but what I was able to come up with pretty much resembles the baracks from Age Of Empires II, haha. So I'd love to compare my solution to yours.
6:30 A common misconception about the use of scalding liquids for the use of defending g a medieval castle is that people think that the defenders would have poured scalding oil but oil was more of a luxury substance back then so the chance that they would have actually poured oil on attackers would have been extremely slim, if not downright none. They would instead as Dudieboy has said, poured scalding water or hot sand.
Me too..and then just yesterday I built something in front of the "gate" I made while I was waiting..now I have to decide if I'm gonna pull it all down to put this on or just live with my failure
o/, lurker reporting in :D I have just the space for mine gatehouse, but the space between the towers is bit larger, deeper for the gate section too. Time to get creative version of my world :D
This came out just in time. I was considering trying to replicate the entrance from your castle for a gatehouse. Now there is no need for it, since this one is right on the money. Cheers and keep up the momentum.
I randomly stumbled across your Norman castle video while on the hunt for designs, and I absolutely loved how in the walls video you implemented mob behaviors and the mechanics of the wall, and how the historical usage of the features applied in game - in my opinion, your medieval videos have been the best resource for a historical nut like myself to be inspired from and to thoroughly enjoy. I'd love to see how you tackle other kinds of castles, features, and especially the history you dig up. Fantastic work!
26:50 If you're using wooden fences, you can use fence gates in the corners to prevent those connections. Additionally, instead of using 2 layers of cobblestone blocks you can use 2 layers of stairs (one normal and one upside down) to prevent the middle 5 fence posts from connecting. You used a similar trick for the murder holes with the slabs
Perfect, I love it! One thing though, real simple Redstone idea here, but try replacing the murder hole wall blocks with dispensers, load them with ammo of choice, I recommend lingering potions of instant damage tier II, combined with tipped arrows of the same. Then, simply tie all the dispensers together with a line of Redstone dust, and add a lever to activate them all at once. Simple, but effective, and that way intruders can’t fire back through the space in the murder hole wall blocks. And I suppose if you wanted to, you could replace all the arrow slit stairs, (and, if desired, the blocks above and to the sides of the middle one), with dispensers as well, loaded with ammo of choice, and a lever. At best, that would be between 2 to 5 projectiles for every one guardsman. A great increase to efficiency. Other things would be to replace the water in the moat with either lava or cacti, or to simple replace the bottom layer of the moat with magma blocks, to pull intruders who try to swim across to their watery and ultimately very hot demise. Plus, you could try to use spruce trapdoors instead of oak for the ends of the bunk beds, I find it has a nicer, more sturdy look to it. Oh, and one last thing, when you go to tie it all together, that Norman Keep needs an aquarium. Not sure why the Normans would have one, but hey, like you said, we have Netherite. Those are just my thoughts. Enjoy your upcoming build. Can’t wait to see it! Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Absolutely love that all the pieces of your castle builds so far have been in manageable sizes, even the really grand structures like this gatehouse! I watch a lot of Minecraft videos, but tend to play more Vintage Story, where building really large structures is much more difficult and time-consuming. Thanks to this series, I'm actually going to try and tackle a modest keep structure styled after your Norman Castle Keep video, and might just plan for a gatehouse once gathering materials isn't so much of an issue. All the little historical details you work in are a real treat. Thank you for including proper plumbing and a thought-out dungeon!
i absolutely love the combination of history and minecraft. it actually makes the history lesson ENGAGING and still helps you with your builds at the same time. love it
I toured a very very old gatehouse in Brussels that was around when the whole city was walled up, and I recognize many features you describe here! Defensive architecture is fascinating
Thank you for adding chapters for your video! It's much easier to navigate when I'm trying to build these myself. I'm happy to see you continue making videos about this because castles are my favorite builds. Please continue to impress us with your great designs and nice guides! May God bless you!
Awesome! I found your channel a few months ago and I've been tracking this series and I love it. It got me back into building and I started building my own castle from this series. I had to come up with a gate house at the time and that was fun. Your gatehouse is much better. Overall good blend of building tutorial, why, and history. Please keep making these.
The great thing about these videos is that they're also very helpful in guiding builds in Vintage Story - a Minecraft-like game that focuses on realistic survival in a medieval setting. Gotta admit though, building castles in Vintage Story is really, really hard xD
Im so glad for finding such great channel, not only about building, but also about history and talking about it with passion. I can't wait for more historical or semi historical builds
Holy hell, you're back! I really like your tutorials. The norman castle is one of the best MC castles i've seen in a while (in practicality sense) Glad you keep doing these
Solid. Glad to see you back and with more planned along the way. I do like how practical some of it is while other stuff is purely decorative. It's cool too that you can make the gates functional with the right redstone setup.
I absolutely enjoyed this very informative video. I also enjoy the history you provide for each of your builds; it makes it a lot more understandable as to why things are done the way they are. I don't think you could have provided the history and the tutorial in less time without cutting out important information. Thank you for your research, time, and energy. It is greatly appreciated.
Please don’t stop making these videos, like many others have said they are so informative about actual history as well as a visually pleasing build in Minecraft. Thank you for the great quality of videos!
The thing I love about this series is how it meets both historical accuracy and usability at Minecraft’s Iron Age tech as opposed to the saturated landscape of super advanced redstone farms, and that’s coming from the person who things building a tic tac toe computer out of redstone logic is a good idea
My friends called me crazy I try to build all of your castle tutorial because I mine for so long and never used the stone but after I finally build my fotress and castle they don't want their old house anymore Thank you for all of your tutorial I am happy building your fortress❤
Another great video to add to my playlist of Minecraft medieval build. Thank you so much for your time and history lesson. I can't wait for the next one!
its funny... i just started playing again after a few years off. I was looking around for exactly this same thing, for ideas for my build... aand you JUST so happened to drop this amazing video as i was watching one of your other videos, lol. coincidence? Me thinks not!
@@dudieboy I just finished my keep and was texturing my walls. I've been using just a fence and gate for too long, and now it's finally time to build my walls and gatehouse. I took my horse out on a long expedition, and I could barely see my Norman Keep with my spyglass, but it was such a wonderful feeling seeing home again after so long. Your builds are easy enough in survival and I don't abandon them half way thru. I really appreciate the simplicity while maintaining some elegance!
I'm really glad there is someone out there/here making actual reality inspired minecraft walls and castles and not fantasy ones. Absurd majority of "castle" guides are overstylicized disney castle builds not reflecting proper medieval fortifications at all. Concerning nitpicks I have towards Minecraft, I really wish there was something like carpet you could just put on walls to simulate the white look of castles from Central Europe caused by plaster. atm making 3m (or 3 blocks) wide wall of the defended side of palace/tower that just looks like cobblestone or stonebrick from both sides just doesn't feel right, so what ends up happening is that 2 out of the 3 blocks have to be replaced with concrete or terracota XD
I absolutely love this building series/tutorial. Not only do I love castles, but I love medieval history. I also suck at building castles, so these have been awesome at helping me not suck so much!
The more videos in this series you upload, the more I regret not waiting until the full series is done and then start building my castle. What a magnificent gatehouse! Sturdy, defendable, looking amazing and overall very practical! I tried designing my own in a similar way, but it ended up a lot bigger than yours, almost unreasonably so. But what I am sorta proud of is functional lava dispensers, to simulate boiling water. I also designed my own murder holes (a trapdoor with an iron bar on it to prevent falling down) and built decorative winces for the portcullises. I haven't finished the rest of it yet, but my drawbridge will be a more "classic" one, with a barbican at the front. I guess I should also add big wooden gates on the inner side, like you did.
I love all the small details of your builds and the history behind them. I dont know why but it really tickles a certain niche I have. Thanks for the video and i cant wait for how you plan on wrapping it all together!
Love this stuff but I’ve spotted a history inaccuracy. The anglo-Saxons weren’t here when the Romans left, that was the celts who were the native inhabitants. Then we were invaded by the Anglo Saxons and pushed into Wales. Then the vikings invaded followed by the Normans.
Finally thanks you so much ive been waiting for this... I think its okay that you took a long time because ive been building a medieval world with multiple fortified towns and with this one im adding my finnishing touches thank you so much
That's such a nice design ! Congratulations for the work once again, really appreciate it! Long videos are fine since they are so interesting and a long build requires a long time so I don't think this is an issue at all.
Thank you for posting this! I really like what you are doing with all the history lessons and actual practical builds that look beautiful and make sense in survival world
Your builds look great, your keep is under construction in my world right now in my self made village. You should consider making a vid about castle walls that follow the landscape and have curves and maybe how to build them over hills. I know it would be useful for a ton of viewers that have been following along with these historical builds. Teaching us about history is a breath of fresh air by the way, not many mc youtubers do that. Keep it up man you definitely earned a fan.
@dudieboy wow I'm blind haha I didn't notice that one, was too interested in the gatehouse I guess 😂 thanks for letting me know I'm watching it right now
Awesome! Can't wait for a new video. The suspense is literally killing me :D Oh and, I think Romans weren't too concerned about the gates because they had legions encamped within, whereas castles were built with the idea that a much smaller force can hold it against a much larger.
Thanks for another great video, I really appreciate the attention to detail you put into all aspects of the build. I built your Norman Castle Keep after watching your video and modified it to work as a gate house, now I may have to upgrade it :)
Awesome video, and a very well-done gatehouse! So happy to see you back. I have zero notes on the build itself, but I do have just a few points on history. (And as I'm sure you'll get plenty of other people in the comments making similar observations, I shall try to make my own as brief as I can.) (My first thing was gonna be on the Viking Age, but I scrolled down and saw someone beat me to it, so I won't beat a dead longship lol) First thing: As to the torture, I would like to know what sources you used for that info, because I know that a lot of the facts about Medieval torture were embellished by 18th and 19th-century scholars. As a result, it's difficult to get at the actual methods and mindset of the time--which, unsurprisingly, is not something that a whole lot of people go in for study on, given how incredibly dark and depressing it is. Second thing: I really like the moat flushing out the garderobe. It's a small thing, but it's really neat, and very plausible! That's pretty much it; I hope this didn't come across as nitpicking, because I really enjoy your content and like to hear what you have to say. I use your builds as inspiration all the time, so I can't wait to see the next one where you tie all the castle bits together!
Thanks for the comments! Yes, torture history is a bit murky and the idea of shackling the prisoners below the drawbridge is more my idea based on some tour videos I’ve watched where an overflow of prisoners were chained up in weird places sometimes, like hallways and kitchens. The rack and the effectiveness of barred windows in prisons are from books I’ve read, and even predate the Middle Ages.
Recently found your channel and the historic build vidoes have been a great help for building in my world. Id love to see your take on a bridge or dock/port!
Not only are you incredibly talented with showing off these architectural designs & explaining the history, you're also an incredible builder who not only explains how to build it, but how to do it pretty efficiently. Pretty dope. P.S. Do you think you'll ever do a star/bastion fort? I think it would be an interesting challenge to create in MC.
Great video! One suggestion: could you include a list of the dimensions by floor/area in addition to your existing list of materials? :) Sometimes it’s a bit hard to follow along with the speed (which is good) and the way the Minecraft camera is. I understand if that’s too much tho! Love how you explain the historical context and the functional purpose for your design!
Also, for the doorway, if some of you folks have a vertical slabs mod, that would fix the issue of the doors colliding. Not that the doors actually move, but it would be less of a visual tick for those with some OCD.
there could be overhanging blocks or parts off a roof to towers from where you can drop sand and anvils on enemies and potentially dripstone but a bit more complex dropping spash potions seems more feasible than stalagtites a room that could be featured would be the elder guardian room which holds an elder guardian and possibly a way for it to shoot upwards while being safe, with an elder guardian the stone bricks / deepslate / blackstone / endstone could handle well, bonus if it is made of obsidian the elder guardian room could also hold a portcullis return slot where an anvil portcullis can be dropped down when the defenders want it open again
I don't know how historically accurate it would be, but I'd love to see a build tutorial for the Roman style sewers! That'd be an awesome topic after your next video!
love your design. I dont fully copy the design ideas from other players but take some inspiration and make my own version and this is a great template.
i always love watching your content, dudieboy. very informative and entertaining. i am not recommending you change your content when i say this but; i feel like you might love to try Vintage Story, as it allows for even more realistic building, and leans more into the medieval aesthetic.
Yay! Fresh video from Dudieboy! Thank you very much for continuing with the historical builds. I'm using your designs in my survival world village along with minecraft exploded: medieval fortress building designs. Currently gathering materials for Norman castle (no biome in sight with dark oak and spruce sadly). I browsed your channel and found past livestreams playlist with beautiful windmill in thumbnails, did you build it on the livestream? I'd like to build it myself :) Thanks a lot.
Great job I added the gate redstone style been waiting for this video followed it up a lot of snow golem killers on defense and iron golem bodyguards can't wait tell your next video
Love the video and the series. My only feedback would to be less going back and making corrections. It can be tough when you’re following along. But I’ve built the Norman castle now twice and enjoy the build. I’ve added a basement to both of mine for lava farm and super smelters. 😁 Thank you!
3:51 during this "break for about 600 years" there were the Saxon and later the Viking invasions, both very significant periods in British history. though only a single sentence, this is a major error and i recommend adding a disclaimer about it in your description and/or pinned comment since not everyone will spot the error themself, especially in a video that tries to teach a bit of history. that aside, i really appreciate that you show the gate houses from different periods and find this series including the other videos very interesting :)
Finally getting to see completion at 37:39 into constuction! If i may, point out a design change i made, regarding the shutters. In place of the trap doors, that are useless, used instead a spruce door. On the inside wall placed inverted cobblestone stairs and a slab over head. It allows opening as a shutter, prevents jumping out, and matches the asthetic of the fireplace.
I like how you connect minecraft and history. Also appreciation for helping bedrock players with the bunk beds. :) Even though i play with mouse and keyboard.

Finally thanks you so much ive been waiting for this... I think its okay that you took a long time because ive been building a medieval world with multiple fortified towns and with this one im adding my finnishing touches thank you so much
I've been waiting so long for this one to drop!
I enjoyed this tutorial and history lesson more than any TH-cam video I have watched in quite some time. Thank you!
Heyo! Watched the whole series in a day and love the texture pack. Excited for the next installment!
Legendary, just what ive been waiting for, thank you greatly, keep up the good work
I never expected to learn about Roman or Norman military architecture from a minecraft video. Consider me subscribed.
I'm in love with this channel and the meticulousness, creativity and accuracy of those ideas. I'm definitely gonna use them
Great build, have been using your vidoes as inspiration for my own survival build.
That's such a nice design ! Congratulations for the work once again, really appreciate it! Long videos are fine since they are so interesting and a long build requires a long time so I don't think this is an issue at all.
Amazing work. I look forward to each of your videos in this series. It was very educational.
I loove this kind of videos. The mix of history facts, architectural details and overall the vibes of the video are great =)
Very impressive! Well done and we appreciate the historical information :)
@@bdltbd Thanks! Check out my channel, I have a video on fortified walls and towers and another on diagonals and uneven terrain
@dudieboy wow I'm blind haha I didn't notice that one, was too interested in the gatehouse I guess 😂 thanks for letting me know I'm watching it right now
@ No worries
Awesome! Can't wait for a new video. The suspense is literally killing me :D
Oh and, I think Romans weren't too concerned about the gates because they had legions encamped within, whereas castles were built with the idea that a much smaller force can hold it against a much larger.
Thanks for another great video, I really appreciate the attention to detail you put into all aspects of the build.
I built your Norman Castle Keep after watching your video and modified it to work as a gate house, now I may have to upgrade it :)
I have not only learned so much from this video but I've gotten inspired! Good stuff man!
I am super excited to watch this. Your videos are top tier.
I’m going to be building this in 7 Days to Die
Wild life series lifers should watch this
I love getting to learn both Minecraft and history in the same video
Not to long, I like the history you add. Very enjoyable content and educational.
Awesome video, and a very well-done gatehouse! So happy to see you back. I have zero notes on the build itself, but I do have just a few points on history. (And as I'm sure you'll get plenty of other people in the comments making similar observations, I shall try to make my own as brief as I can.)
(My first thing was gonna be on the Viking Age, but I scrolled down and saw someone beat me to it, so I won't beat a dead longship lol)
First thing: As to the torture, I would like to know what sources you used for that info, because I know that a lot of the facts about Medieval torture were embellished by 18th and 19th-century scholars.
@@dudieboy Good to know! Thanks for the info.
Recently found your channel and the historic build vidoes have been a great help for building in my world. Id love to see your take on a bridge or dock/port!
Huh, new Minecraft tuber in my feed. Gonna follow, I like these castle designs
Thanks so much for this, you're guides are the best 👍👍
My pleasure!
Thanks! Doin my best
Good feedback, I can probably say it or even show it during the video.
I legit just subscribed the day before hoping for this video, and you post it. What a birthday gift! 😆
Also, for the doorway, if some of you folks have a vertical slabs mod, that would fix the issue of the doors colliding. Not that the doors actually move, but it would be less of a visual tick for those with some OCD.
This is absolutely fantastic! I’m a huge fan of this series
@@blueraptorgaming064 Awesome, thanks!
@ you’re welcome! What do you also plan on talking about for this series?
this couldn't POSSIBLY! have better timing for me. I've been researching portcullises for my minecraft build lol
there could be overhanging blocks or parts off a roof to towers from where you can drop sand and anvils on enemies and potentially dripstone but a bit more complex
dropping spash potions seems more feasible than stalagtites
a room that could be featured would be the elder guardian room which holds an elder guardian and possibly a way for it to shoot upwards while being safe, with an elder guardian the stone bricks / deepslate / blackstone / endstone could handle well, bonus if it is made of obsidian
the elder guardian room could also hold a portcullis return slot where an anvil portcullis can be dropped down when the defenders want it open again
Interesting ideas
I don't know how historically accurate it would be, but I'd love to see a build tutorial for the Roman style sewers! That'd be an awesome topic after your next video!
love your design. I dont fully copy the design ideas from other players but take some inspiration and make my own version and this is a great template.
i always love watching your content, dudieboy. very informative and entertaining. i am not recommending you change your content when i say this but; i feel like you might love to try Vintage Story, as it allows for even more realistic building, and leans more into the medieval aesthetic.
I hear it’s hard, but a let’s play wouldn’t be out of the question
This is both interesting historically and useful as a Minecraft tutorial.
In one of my let's plays some years ago. Medieval windmill tutorial is on my request list.
Really love your videos they have gave me the inspiration and ideas I needed to build in medieval style in my world ❤
Great job I added the gate redstone style been waiting for this video followed it up a lot of snow golem killers on defense and iron golem bodyguards can't wait tell your next video
Been waiting for this yessssss
YEEEAAAAH!! Your videos are great man.
I appreciate that!
I like what the Spanish did in Cartagena with the two full bastions to each side of the gates.
Oh man I am early today. Seems that this night I am not sleeping, time to launch Minecraft :D
