    Man it's a budget guitar and your modding it, mistakes, holes etc just give character

    Old luthier advised long ago that the retainer should sit exactly half way between nut end and first tuner. Perfect every time.

      I've never heard that. Thank you. I will remember that.

      Although wasn't the the problem in this video that Greg did it too high, and that he had to drill it closer to the nut, so is it not dependant on the shape of the headstock? I have four Dimebag Dean's I want to do this to and what happens here terrifies me.

      It's about adjusting the height up/down to the point that the string break-angle over the nut minimizes or eliminates the strings pulling sharp when you lock the nut. Closer will be better as you'll have more adjustability. Too far away and you may not be able to get the angle steep enough. Just copy with factories do.

    Just installed one on my Jackson js34q. I drilled into the edge of the truss rod cover but whatever. It came out a little crooked but it keeps in perfect tune now. Guess it doesn't matter if it's a tad offset so long as it's pressing down on all strings.

    ive been planning on doing this to my jackson kelly soon, these manufacturers have to know this is an issue why do they not just install the retainers themselves

    adjusting the truss rod with the retainer bar on a tilt back headstock like that is a bit of a hassle, wish they all had the axcess at the butt end of the neck like the 84 ;)

    Interesting...With that headstock angle it still needed a retainer bar?....i ask because I have went through this with a few "floyded" guitars....On my Strat with a flat head stock their was no way around it...(or string tree's)...With my Ibanez and Schecter I got rid of my retainer bars (don't like them at all)....reason being headstock angle plus wrapping the string down the post a little more than I usually do. PRESTLO...VOILA!!!...The break angle fixes the need. for a retainer bar ...I noticed you didn't have many wraps on your post's. I found a few extra wraps was all it needed...Now my LTD I got sit's somehwere between the Strat and my other guitars, not sure what to do with that one... Anyway, thanks for listening, cool channel, subscribed. ...Cheers!

      Only issue I had was the neck pocket wasn't routed very neatly. I just had a friend who is a luthier clean it up for me.

    Does anyone know if the retainer bar adds tension to the strings? Say I'm used to play with some 10-46 gauge strings, should I start using 9-42 strings after installing the retainer bar in a floyd rose guitar? I know it probably doesn't make any significant difference because of the locking nut, but I don't always play with the clamps locked to the nut all the time, especially when my floating bridge is blocked so I can drop tune all I want. So in that case, would the retainer bar add tension to the strings if the nut doesn't have the clamps locked to it, like in a standard traditional nut?

    • @GregTalksGuitars
      @GregTalksGuitars  ปีที่แล้ว

      The retainer bar is to keep the strings tight on the lock nut so the tuning doesn't change when you tighten the locks. If you aren't using the locks then it doesn't do much. It might add a little tension to the strings but I can't imagine it is very much.

    • @AidanStutzman
      @AidanStutzman ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Nothing that happens behind the locking nut will make any different in how the guitar feels or sounds.

  • @NDWoj

    Thanks for this. How do you know how far in to put the screws? Thanks

    • @johannesbraun4283
      @johannesbraun4283 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As soon as the strings lay flat in the nut, thats when they are in far enough and the bar is low enough... if that makes any sense.

    • @NDWoj
      @NDWoj ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johannesbraun4283 I have the strings just touching the fret...I filed the nut down. I bought a bar to hold them in place inside the nut...thanks.

    Looking to do this on my Dimebag Deans. Any one know what size drill bit I should use. I feel I should be able to do this easy enough, but it still terrifies me.

    I did my locking nut couple days back,I made couple mistakes lol but I've fixed it now my height was too high then to low frett buzz haha I couldn't cracked honestly I gave up that day,but then i started to feel less stressed so it worked couple Mark's on my guitar headstock but hey ho it's fine no one is perfect haha,i forgot about that bar i got it today,how tight do they need to be my friend

    • @GregTalksGuitars
      @GregTalksGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tight enough that the strings are touching the whole nut. That way when you tighten the lock it doesn't make the strings go sharp.

    The bar looks cool 😎 do i have to have a locking nut to put one on my Kramer??? Thanks

    • @GregTalksGuitars
      @GregTalksGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. All the bar does is put pressure on the strings so they sit in the lock nut correctly. I don't think it is necessary without the lock nut but you could definitely install one.

    Your luck with your mistake. I was working on my bar on a Jackson just now and the damn screw broke in the headstock. After screaming S.O.B. for 5 min. I move the bar a little forward and did another hole; lucky I have extra screws that size.
