    Another great video Andrew! I'm a Toyota man and would never buy a landrover. But I love how unbiased you are in your videos. You own a beautiful 70 series LandCruiser, and also own/drive Landrovers, and your very honest in your videos about the strengths and weakness's of the different 4x4's and dont seem biased at all. Keep the videos coming. ;-)

    Great review 4xforum. We have a 2011 D4 and a 2005 RRS in our group and we get to compare them offroad on a regular basis. To take a new Land Rover offroad is no different to taking any new 4wd offroad. That is what they are made to do. We are running the 2.7L diesel in both vehicles which allows for 17" rims and a great range of tyres.
    Thanks for the video

    Great review Andrew. I own a 7 y.o. D3 and it's the perfect car, drove a RRS autobiography and was underwhelmed, tempted by a D4, only put off by the prospect of D5. D3 has only been face lifted because it's a terrific industrial design and the new running gear lifts it further ahead. Will buy the D5 when it emerges.

    Would you recommend the Discover 4 as a city and weekend driving car? me and my father are thinking about getting the 3.0 bi turbo diesel 8 gears for going travelling and also going on 4x4 trails here in brasil. It will be the 2 Land Rover here at home, we have a Freelander 2 and we want a 4x4 more capable car and more spacious. thanks

    Great vid as usual, Andrew.
    There's one more thing that drives me nuts about my D3.
    The spare wheel.
    You need to empty the back, completely, and lift the rear row of seats to get to the wheel lowering mechanism.
    Not ideal when off-road with a car full of camping gear.
    If that wasn't an afterthought in design, I don't know what is.

    thank you very much - you have just convinced me that I have been right all along, despite the wife arguing otherwise. We have a LR4 12 year model with 8 speed jag gear box which is absolutely awesome. We also had a bay range rover evoque which was crap. We changed recently to a disco 3 rather than a RR sport as I felt the disco was much more practical and you just proved my point. thanks very much. as to reliability, not had an issue with either disco at all, but evoque different issue.

    Excellent review. Thorough, honest, and complete. You are literally the first reviewer I could find who mentions the nav system. And who compares the LR4 to the RRS. And who has driven an LR4 for more than a week.
    Thank you! As someone who is shopping for an SUV and considering both the LR4 and RRS (along with others), I find this to be incredibly helpful. Cheers

    Some 10 years later - I had a out of the showroom Defender P400 X (ie highest spec) for nearly two years, sold it to buy a 2016 low mileage (21k) D4 Landmark (always fancied one but just hadn’t happened) and whilst the tech may not be at anywhere near the same level, I have to say the gamble paid off as I prefer it.
    The split rear is WAY much better than the swing out rear door on the Defender. Also has a lot more storage space and seat options just work better in the D4.
    Where I am (Richmond London) there are now less Discovery’s than new Defenders - stick another 10 years on from now (assuming the cranks can stop breaking 😂) good low mileage Discovery examples I think will be sought after 🤓🙏

    Johnson rods mod but #1 reason why I would rather have a LC200 than this is the stupid 19" wheels. I get that the calipers/rotors are big for better braking and less fade but this isn't a track vehicle.

    The LR4 is heavier than the RRS so if you're not going for the 7 seater LR3/4 model you get better performance. Also the cars shouldn't be bought from new, let someone else take the 30-40 thousand £ hit and buy one that's 3-4 years old and many will look like brand new and have never been off road. Someone took an almost 50K£ hit on my LR3 with all leather looks like brand new drives like new and no issues with the air suspension or control arm bushings. Best value for money off road car is clearly a used Range Rover Sport...nothing comes close, it's so comfortable and capable and so cheap...

    Andrew..........what's your opinion on the reliability of the Discovery 4.
    I have narrowed my choice down to D4 or Toyota Land-cruiser. I do prefer the Land rover package overall but don't wont to be running back and forth to the garage with vehicle issues. Your thoughts appreciated.

    • @3204clivesinclair
      @3204clivesinclair 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I look forward to Andrews reply too. In the UK, I worked on most LR's from 1974 to 2003. Although reliability has improved, I would still not part with my own cash over a Toyota. You are right as a package the Discovery is great.
      But a great package isn't much use when the vehicle is in a garage. I know people who have 200,000 on a D3 with no problems. I also know people with a D4 who have not managed to do more than 1000 in 6 months - due to downtime.

    The X-Lifter will overcome your problem of driving at a higher speed with a raised suspension - an excellent addition when you need to drive on these rougher road with a lift higher than standard will allow. I have also heard that the 18" steel wheels of the new Defender will fit the Disco 3/4.

    I totally agree about the issue with the rims that is a problem afflicting all the current generation of LR's. Oversized rims and massive brakes. Once you go bigger than 18inch you rule out a load of potential off road biased tyres. At least Cooper do the Discoverer STT in 18inch, its a really really good tyre.

    The RR Sport is sportier to drive (just a tad), better to look at(a lot), a more desirable badge(tones of street cred) and a better angle of departure coz of the steep overhangs. It's the RR Sport for me. Call me a badge slob. But hey.......I like it better.

    I think you want the moon on a stick, there is no vehicle that will do everything you want in every circumstance. I can't believe you are moaning that you want to travel at 50+ kph on a rough road with raised suspension and the LR says 'NO', so what? slow down and enjoy the experience. At a slower speed you may just avoid getting into trouble!

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for your comment. It is obvious that you have no experience of corrugated tracks that are part of any adventure away from towns and cities. Most corrugations are created by vehicles driving well above 50kph. Therefore, to match the frequency of the corrugations and to avoid being shaken to pieces, one needs to match one's speed to the corrugations. Most commonly, this speed is a little above 60kph all the way to 80kph. The Discovery, if it could go a bit faster, would be much safer at the higher speed, in that the wheels will stay firmly on the ground. At the unmatched lower speed, it jumps about, shakes itself and is extremely uncomfortable - and something will eventually break. This is a universal (not just me) complaint of Discovery 3 and 4 drivers in Africa and Australia where such corrugations are common.

    • @haydne
      @haydne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So "it is obvious that you have no experience of corrugated tracks that are part of any adventure away from towns and cities" a smart ass response. I've driven a LR4 from Morocco to Cape Town.

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haydne In that case, I do not understand why you appear not to understand the need to match the speed to the corrugations, which is sometimes difficult with the Discovery limited to 50 kph on a track, which you would have encountered on your trip. Your comment about speed etc now makes even less sense.

    • @haydne
      @haydne 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      4xOverland I won't argue with you since I do enjoy your videos, my original comment was, no vehcile will do everything you want, and it's a pity the LR4 doesn't but I bow to your expert knowledge :)

    To be fair blaming LR for poor navigation is unfair. It's the mapping software that they contract out must be garbage in South Africa. Here in the states my Disco 3 has been near perfect. The nav is easy and self explanatory, I never once cracked open the instructions to use it. I cant say that for any of my Mercedes though (albeit they have made the newer ones slightly more user friendly).

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The map supplier supplies several vehicle manufacturers in South Africa. And most work okay. This one's problem was the user interface. I asked around with some Disco owners I know, and every one, without exception used a dash mounted Garmin or TomTom, because they agreed, it was useless. I asked the marketing manager at the time, what he thought of it. He smiled a knowing smile, and said, "We don't talk about it much, and its under revision". He then mouthed the word, 'Its shit'. I could not possibly keep quiet about it, as it is sold as an expensive optional in an extremely expensive motorcar.

    I had a G4 55 Plate Sport and the Sat Nav was U/S, didn't take to the car, thought it looked Poxy and didn't evoke any emotion, Disco 4 is the best out of the current line up (omitting Defender) but 35% overpriced and therefore not justifiable unless you have an enormous ego to satisfy. Range Rover CLASSIC was a Car for all seasons and a Car for ALL Reasons, it was/is a Practical multipurpose vehicle with practical class and looked right and was justifiably priced in the early years, to me LR Have lost the plot and there are now a lot of gullible ppl out there if they will part with 45K for a D4 Weighing around 3 ton- that's £15 grand a ton !!!!!!!! when you consider you can buy a Volvo 8 wheel tipper truck weighing 11 ton - 9 grand a ton and get a shed load of Heavy engineering it seems to me LR are having it off with their customers.

    Is this REALLY "the hardest trail in SA"??? Maybe it's only tough cause you're in an independent sus'd Rover??? BTW, if you take this things out for long runs, BRING SPARE AIR-BAG/suspension components. After 3 days in the San Rafael Swell with one that had some "quirks" (read: it broke) and required some SERIOUS "bush ingenuity" to get it home Stupid computers and air-ride suspension was KNACKERED. Neat LOOKING trucks though, Wish Toyota had done as well with the "Fortrunner" styling.

      @ysman007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, shame, LR's must be really annoying to you seeing that you take the time to comment here. Unlike Toyota drivers, LR owners generally have the cars serviced, and I promise you that if you follow the manufacturer's service guide, which includes servicing/replacing the suspension parts when scheduled, you won't be left in the bush easily. BTW, there are FAR more Defenders still on road in all parts of the world than old Toyotas. Next time, come to the court with some papers...

    After years of respect, I begin to think your hate towards land rover makes you complain about small things, most of them solved by the factory or the aftermarket builders just to make them seem bad cars. You need to go through that balloons pass to say it's not bad. Go and take one of your beloved toyotas(a prado is suposed to be in the same market line to the discovery) and try to do that road that 'easy'. Your troopy would struggle to do it as good as that STOCK car.
    Toyotas are fantastic but with their weak points.
    So are the land rovers.
    But you try to make them seem as crap stuff.
    Credibility is not for ever without taking care of it being fair instead of biasied. Cheers.

      Hate towards Land Rover????????????. Did you watch the video at all? One or two criticisms of a car doesn't mean hate. It means honesty. Your brand loyalty is affecting your judgement sir.

      4xoverland.
      Hello Andrew.
      I have no brand loyalty as I don't work for any brand.
      But Your's is one of the opinions I respect most regarding 4x4 and overland and sometimes it's anoying that feeling you transmit in this matter.
      Not in this video, but in general.
      It seems any land or range rover MUST be perfect always and any mistake takes a good part of your time going around how wrong it is.
      I mean: should I buy a Prado or a Pajero in Europe due to the navigation sistem not working good in SA?
      Or I would better go in the old days for a diesel GR Patrol(before knowing its problems with the inner head cooling) instead of a crappy discovery 2 with the 'expensive to fix' 3 amigoes?
      Just examples.
      I'm not going into the speed safety(acording to Land Rover) limit, as there's always aftermarket builders to fix factory issues in every 4x4, except for the diesel vm engines the old grand cherokees used years ago.
      My point isn't going against you as I respect you.
      My point is, it seems every time you drive any land rover, I know you're gonna go 10% of the video saying the tonality of the green they used to paint the car is a huge mistake(enough to buy another car) because it doesn't mimetize perfectly with the tonality of the tree in wich the leopard waits to hunt(exagerated humoristic methaphore).
      It's a feeling I get from your videos when there's a land rover involved, even though you say a lot of giod things as well.
      Apart from this, thank you for your videos as they're really fantastic in general.
      Cheers.
      David

      It's necesary to add that I'm talking about issues like navigation sistem, or the size of the luxury rims or the speed safety limit, or the spare tyre hard to take out if the car is full in the middle of Africa(would you keep your car stock instead of adding front/rear bumpers with cans/tyre holders?).
      All the are minor issues(easy to solve)due to the fact that, sadly, the new discos and ranges are designed to be sold to people who are mostly not offroaders.
      If the problem was a weak point in the CV's as the old discos for example, perfect!! Go for it as it is an important issue maybe not to buy that car.
      But sometimes it seems minor issues in lr's seem more important than bigger things in other cars.
      The problem is that I don't know if that feeling I get from the video(since this video and others I wouldn't buy this car or any lr under any circunstances) is real or not.
      I consider you a fair and honest person. But I have this extrange feeling when you talk about land rovers in general.
      And, please, don't think I'm one of those who say the Prado is the proof that toyota is a disaster(lr fannatics) or those who are ashamed of the Prado saying it's not even a toyota as their other land cruisers(toyota fannatics)
      In my opinion the Prado is a fantastic car(being 'the worse' of the toyotas as sine say).
      I just like to think there's still some people whose opinion is respectable 100% because they're completely fair, even when I don't agree with them.
      And that's difficult nowadays in the net.
      Cheers.
      David.

    Toyota > LR every day, in every way. Go ahead and buy one, but you'll be getting circles run around you by the guys in Toyotas. End of story

      If you haven't owned one, you don't know what you're talking about. There are many excellent cars and SUVs but the king of them all off road is Range Rover. Nothing comes close. Take this from someone who has used them extensively in extreme mountainous conditions, in very challenging weather and on a regular basis. NOTHING comes close.

    the old range rover sport in the video is a froud because of the badge (sport) it's not sporty and it's not a proper range rover because it has the same body and same engine and the discovery engine is not sporty so it's not a real range rover and range rover sports are frouds
