Regular Cat Check Ups
We recommend that your kitty sees one of our vets at least once a year. Cats can be masters at hiding illness so it's important to have regular veterinary checks so that problems or injuries are picked up early. Prevention is always better than the cure. We love cats and aim to create a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere for our feline patients. Visit our website at www.scvc.co.za to learn more about us and our clinic.

    Several dachshunds over the years, only 2 have had IVDD issues. One, Nikki, very minor, crate rest, and proper medical care, no surgery needed, recovered 100%, full strength. She is now 14 almost 14, and once in a while has a slow day, she tends to pull a tendon in her front left leg. My other dachshund, Dezzi, needed back surgery, several discs, and later neck surgery, a couple of discs. Rare but can happens. Dezzi had 3 or 4 other events that did not need surgery. Each event, she lost a bit signal strength down her spine. But she always recovered well, with proper care, if a bit slower as she aged and had events. She lived to be 16, and it was brain tumor that finally got her. Of course, I had ramps everywhere, and jumping was greatly discouraged. Never let any of my dachshunds get over weight! Post surgery exercise is key, with strength training. Like humans, dogs have to basically relearn reprogram walking, based on changes to the spine. Since you have to teach the brain to send more signals at a greater frequency down fewer 'lines' in spinal column, since it is bundle of nerves, and with IVDD, a few 'lines' get impacted with each event, typically, in the worst cases. Dachshunds adapt, just as humans can. I used to joke... that my 'problem' dachshund paid for her extensive medical costs, at 10 cents a tail wag.... Dezzi paid me back at least 2 or 3 times, over the 10 years after fist issue at 6 years. Miss you Dezzi.

    When my dachshund jumped off the sofa and lost the use of his back legs the vet gave him pain meds and gave me a sling to use on his back legs. I purchased a stroller to keep him in when I wasn't exercising him outside and in 2 months he was back to normal. It happened again although I don't think he jumped off of anything I really don't know what happened but I did the same thing and he's pretty much regained his ability to walk. Maybe a little weak in the back legs but gets around fine if he doesn't have to walk on slick floors. The stroller was so useful in keeping him confined and he actually loved it. I am so diligent in not letting him try to get up and down from the sofa and he's learned to wait and let me lift him up and down. Also had a ramp built for him to use as I have steps at my door that he comes in and out of.

    This is an old video so I'm not sure if this comment will ever get through. I have a dog going through something similar right now and I have two questions. Did did JP have "deep pain sensation" in the hind legs post surgery or was there no feeling at all? And secondly, was he incontinent entirely as well? My dog can't feel anything in her hand legs and is largely incontinent and so I'm looking for some sort of similarities to give me hope

    • @almakerr7
      @almakerr7 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We treated JP conservatively without surgery. We have treated paralysed patients successfully with no deep pain sensation as well as incontinence. The success rate becomes much higher if the return of deep pain sensation is fast. Often patients can remain incontinent until they start to stand and sometimes until they start taking steps.

And what awesome owners to do everthing in your power to help him on this journey. Our beloved little mini dachshund just came off crate rest for IVDD and she's doing so much better, it's encouraging to see videos like this and how much progress can be made even if things don't look so great at the outset. Excellent video! My dog had FCE and was knuckling and dragging and I used a sling to help her walk, grounding her legs/feet and supportive standing to eat/drink, etc. I put my finger in the paw pads of her bad leg and she started to get reflexive response. I also did range of motion exercises to her bad leg which was very stiff in extension. She also developed wound to top of her bad paw from dragging that i treated with dressing changes 2x/day. She was treated with IV steriods at vet in beginning. She is walking and running and doing everything again after a few months. Her one leg is still visibly weaker but 100% functional, although I don't let her up on high bed/jumping from anything too high because I think she maybe jumped down from bed when i was at work at thats what caused the whole thing. I am so happy with her recovery. She has a new lease on life, and our work together towards her recovery made our bond stronger than ever! I pray for anyone who has to go through this! It can get better!!!

    My 11 yo Pekingese-Maltese-poodle mutt lost the strength in his legs 1 week ago. The vet says IVD bulging / herniation. He originally was very weak in the hind legs and was unable to consistently place the left rear paw correctly on the ground, like a human foot drop, so he would place the paw top side down and try to stand like that. The foot was bent under him. I will disagree with your slide stating that if you see this sign it means nerves will not regenerate. You are mistakenly taking hope from people although you obviously have wonderful intentions. As a chiropractic orthopedist I can tell you a sign like this can be temporary. In one week he clearly has more strength in the dorsiflexors of his paw because he is bringing the paw up as he swings the leg forward which he could not do previously. It will be a long recovery. Thank you for your information as this is truly sad when it happens to both the dog and his owners.
