I have a question, please... What I understood from the explanation at minute 3:03 is that the chromeOS system does not recognize devices under 2013, meaning the Mac Book Pro 2012 device will not work.
hello thank you for the video I have a macbook air 2015, graphics card, Intel HD Graphics 6000 card, I was not successful I did the boot on the usb key but it remains frozen at the start
You should make a video explaining how to get a dual boot going on a mac macOS and Ubuntu 23.10. Also how to make it all work if you are using opencore patcher on macos. It was trivial for me to get a Haswell based macbook pro (no igp) working with dual boot macOS, and Ubuntu 23.10. However after opencore patcher, I lost the ability to boot into ubuntu anymore. Also the second half of the video where you do the chromeOS install...ubuntu install is so much neater and easier than that garbage, and ubuntu can write into the virtual fat32 volume you create inside the apfs volume fine, it easily can format two ext4 partitions one for boot one for home.
Patches took more than half an hour even tot the page indicate "few minutes". Finally successfully installed into my Macbook Air 13 (mid-2012). However was not able to use the Play Store. Play store keeps updating than show error 7. Downloaded Whasapp apk also cannot install directly to the OS. Otherwise it works perfectly fine. Camera, audio, keyboard, mouse, trackpad, Wifi, bluetooth all works perfectly. When using OS Flex, BT cannot work, keyboard backlit and shortcuts cannot work, very jampy and keep crushing...
This (much like every other Linux distro) does not work well on my Macbook 14,1. Suspend/Sleep is broken entirely, you can't get to the Chrome settings table and hit enter either via the built-in keyboard (as expected) or an external USB keyboard. What you really should have done here is in addition to including a random pre-built Google Drive brunch build, also have a GitHub page or Gist with the repeatable steps to build it ourselves, update it, support scripts etc. As it stands, that image is going to drift version-wise and be corpseware in no time.
I followed your tutorial to install this on my early 2013 MacBook Pro, the only problem I have is the Google Play Store errors out first error was code 7 then the second time and other times code 8
Mine is a mid 2012 MacBook Air 13. I face the same issue, error 7 & 8. Till now still cannot find a solution... I updated version and reboot and now also stuck at ChromeOS page and hang... Cannot login anymore...😢
Viewed this video hoping to use ChromeOS on my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro with 8gb RAM and 1Tb SSD. Alas, found out that it could not be supported. I have renewed the thermal paste on this Mac. It has been little used since new. I'm experiencing high CPU usage even with 0 programs running -- this behavior is seen for a number of Linux flavors; multiple-generations of MacOS and OpenCore with several generations of MacOS. The battery service indicator is displayed. Could a battery problem be the cause of high CPU usage. I'd really like to use this old machine. If a new battery would fix the CPU problem, what OS would you suggest that I install in it for light word processing and email? Thanks! Please keep up the great work in sharing your explorations of vintage Mac that can continue to be useful.
Got a problem with the play store not loading. Error code 7 not sure what to do. Love your guide, got my wifi working for chrome os too. Better than I could do on kubuntu. It's a little clunky on my 2015, but I think it will improve after install.
The install was giving me problems so I reflashed the usb. The installation went better and now it has installed. Google play works as well. Only problem is having to hold the options key when turning on the macbook so that you can access the EFI boot. It will not boot on it's own.
I did everything on Macbook Air 2013 and it is stuck on ChromeOS logo. Doesn't get past this logo. Tried different kernels from 5.15 to 6.1 to 6.6 but no avail. Any tips?
Many thanks for this interesting video. I am also interested in getting Linux working on old unsupported MacBooks, and have experimented with this a little bit. Some things (notably the camera) did not work when I tried Ubuntu. Would you consider doing videos investigating the suitability/success of various Linux distributions on older Macs, no longer supported by Apple.
Very nice video. A good idea. I´m using OCLP as long as it works. It’s a blessing. For me it´s the ecosystem of MacOS, iOS and iPadOS that keeps me running it. But one day this or Linux might be an alternative. Can ChromeOS (or Linux) be pimped to get a similar experience? I mean: are there Apps for ChromeOS (or Linux) that let me use Apple Fotos, Apple Musik, iCloud, Facetime etc. in a similar way? How close can we get to MacOS? You can explain so well in your videos. Maybe this could be worth another video.
@@zbilel7748a few months ago a client has a 2008 24" imac, it would not run anything remotely new. Put Linux Mint 18 32bit on there, works perfect, very fast and everything supported. It can also handle 720P video on youtube
For some reason I'm just totally hooked on Ubuntu and how they do GNOME. I love how they have newer-ish GNOME in ubuntu 23.10, but you still keep a taskbar on the left. Best of both worlds. I just don't get the draw of Mint or Mate....I'm either in the terminal or clicking on shortcuts I made to the tools I use, barely ever go online with linux anyways. Is it for the start menu so it looks like windows? Is that what this is all about?
Thanks for the video and files! Ran into a little problem on my 2015 12" MacBook: After the changed settings and the reboot I get the message RootFS is being rebuilt. It says it could take minutes, but after an hour: Still nothing. Any tips?
This is different then ChromeFlex? I have created ChromeFlexUSB drive some time ago, i can run it on a 2015 Imac but the wifi card will not work/connect. I hate chrome but i have to have it for work and my work chromebook is pathetic. Is there a way i can get chromeflex or chromeos to run on a 2015 Imac, I have several, and would prefer the big screen for work.

Dammit Jessie, I had this idea too :P To be fair, I don't know I'd ever gotten around to making a video about it though, looks more tedious than I expected.
Yeah, it took me quite a while and there are many Macs that won’t boot with it due to dGPU or T2 Chip and so on… still heavily working on 2nd part about updating. Btw I love your Trash Can video! 🚀
I just installed chrome os flex on my old mid 2009 Macbook pro and it works perfectly.
Today I partitioned my old 2011 MBP with OCLP Big Sur and Windows 11. Honestly it makes a great Windows laptop
I couldnt get OCLP and newer versions of MacOs to work on a 2008 iMac but ChromeOs Flex worked GREAT !
Nice video, keep up the good work.
Thx! ☺️
