Hola Familia, n today's video, we will talk about why we left Oaxaca (Oaxaca City), Mexico. As you know from following our Mexico travels, we lived in Queretaro, Mexico for over a year after making the decision to leave the U.S. for a new life. We decided to leave Queretaro for Oaxaca to continue to expand our knowledge about living in Mexico and bring our perspective of a new city to our viewers. If you haven't already seen it, make sure to check out our Oaxaca Apartment tour as we also gave a breakdown of the pros/ cons of the apartment in the mountains of Aurora. Don't forget to check out our video library which contains numerous resources to include, how to obtain temporary residency in Mexico, cost of living 2021, neighborhood tours, Mexico travel vlogs, traveling/ flying with dogs, and MUCH more!

I won't live in an apartment. Always a free standing house. I don't want anyone on the other side of a thin wall., or up or down stairs.

As a security expert, never being a victim of theft in 74 years but defeating many attempts. On your house put locks to outside doors upside down. Normal installation I can be in in 2 seconds. Upside down could take me a half hour. On gated, when away long secure with heavy chain and good padlock. Too easy for a thief to pry open normal gate locks.
I rented a house in Leon where a guy had died and took 2 months to discover. All cleaned up but boy was that secure. No one would even walk on my side of the street. Great place too as it was furnished. I have no superstitions, but will play on those of others.

I surprise them by keeping it out of site till up there and no way to go but back. Helps not being a big shot with a car for thieves to haul off a big screen or other household loot. A car, better yet a truck makes you a prime attraction.
Pick up a little of another language. I have often told people coming to my home I only speak Chinese or Russian. The confused look on their face is precious. But I pass as a Panamanian, Ecuadorian, Nicaraguan or Costa Rican long as I keep my mouth shut. That will forever be a give away. But I look and dress and otherwise act just like them.
At 74 I actually have people coming out to see me walking, jogging, running and biking uphill. We have 30 to 35% inclines. Going the same direction no one has passed me, even if I'm carrying about 15 kilos of groceries. I am known as El Mago de la Montana (or Mag for short. Probably walked 15 kilometers this morning. Took the subway north south east and west to city limits. The subway here is much nicer, cleaner, cheaper and safer than any in the US. Lots of shops and eateries too. Amazing I didn't get lost but I have a better sense of direction here than US. Absolutely safe everywhere I have been, police presence or not. And unlike the US no bum camps. Spotted maybe 4 people either homeless or recovering from an all night bender harmlessly sleeping in doorways I speak at least fair Spanish in Mexico as it is about a third the speed as Central America.

What people do not see is that Oaxaca is beautiful and rich with indigenous cultures. People like to move to Mexico or retire there but don’t take into consideration that you are in NATIVE LAND! These people haven’t always been treated fairly by their own government..that why there’s pollution and lack of resources. Respect indigenous land and people.

As an American who has worked in 7 countries for 2 years each on contracts, including India and China, and besides that not just for one week like a tourist but actually lived in a total of 26 countries outside of the United States, none of which were in expat enclaves, but rather with the locals, I would say that there is zero pollution in Oaxaca compared to New Delhi, Jakarta, Cairo, Bombay or Beijing. Having lived the first 29 years of my life in Brooklyn New York, none of the bag/camera snatching attempts would be much of an issue either. The main thing that I liked about this video were the warnings to women about being kidnapped and raped. That is something that Oaxaca unfortunately according to the video is suffering from and that is nothing to play around with. There is none of that in Japan, South korea, Malaysia, Armenia or Turkey etc. I commend this video for warning women of this horrible phenomenon. That is really the key point and the highlight of this excellent video.
There's plenty of landlords in America and also plenty of other countries who also do not want to rent to pet owners, which is understandable. Pet dander, fleas, barking, damage, and noise from dogs is definitely not a lot of landlords' idea of acceptable. Religious beliefs are also a factor in some countries for keeping certain pets in the house when renting.
My experience abroad is that in general Americans and British and Europeans do not familiarize themselves enough religiously, socially, ethnically or linguistically with the place they want to move to and then they hit some pretty disappointing and unexpected road blocks. I would recommend that unless you are from the tough streets of New York City or Chicago or something like that, you do not venture out to places which would be considered dangerous third world countries in the minds of Americans who come from rural or sparsely populated areas with mostly Anglo Saxon demographics.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes, everyone has different experiences living abroad or even living in the country that they come from, and with that being said we are not big on comparing. We are always living amongst the locals and try our best to avoid tourists parts. In this video, we spoke about factual events that were taking place as we lived in Oaxaca city everything from pollution, crime, kidnapping, etc... Neither one of us stated that we were afraid of living in Oaxaca City or anywhere else in Mexico.
We both come from very tough backgrounds, but it doesn't mean that you would continue putting yourself in situations where pride would override common sense. Also honestly speaking being from New York or Chicago does not mean that you are tough. Just speaking experience from living all over the United States. One more thing about pets, if the landlords allow smoking (health hazard) which is way worse actually than pet dander, barking, etc.. why wouldn't they allow pets? I'm just saying.
We both just continue to share and speak the truth about our experiences of living in Mexico, but as mentioned earlier everyone has different experiences. That is why we always suggest individuals have their own. Most importantly thanks for watching our video it's really appreciated.

@@WhyNotNow Actually yes, if you grew up in Chicago or Brooklyn, yes you have no choice but to be tough. Or you'll get eaten. So who's left standing didnt get eaten, so yes, very tough.
You missed my point, I didnt say "continue putting yourself in dangerous situations", I said if you aint tough, dont go to tough places and be shocked. (in general, and not saying you were shocked).
As for your question about landlords and smoking vs pet owning, well that is up to the landlord, right? We cannot decide for them. If I were a landlord I would rent to neither smokers NOR pet owners. It's up to the landlord. No big mystery there.
Good video, like I said. Keep up the good work.

Oaxaca is a tourist place par excellence, but if you want to live in Oaxaca you should see which place is ideal for you, Oaxaca has very safe places but they are also more expensive, you say there is a lot of pollution, but in the video shots you can see a clean and blue sky, We Oxaqueños know that Queretaro is one of the most expensive states to live in and that is why you did not stay there, Recently, the British newspaper The Independent has cataloged Oaxaca as one of the cities with the best gastronomic proposals. Also, it is considered one of the most important tourist sites in Mexico.

You may need to rewatch the video as there is clearly visible smog. Ultimately, if the city is good for you, then that is what matters right. As stated in our video, this is our experience and the bottom line is, it wasn't for us. We will always scout the soil ourselves rather than taking someone else's word for something (there are too many incentives for people to NOT be honest/ up front unfortunately). For example, real estate agents, or those that have a particular type of work that financially thrives based on the influx of transplants, are obviously not going to like the fact that we are speaking our truth (and we are very aware of this). This is why we do the work we do on our channel. You may be new to our content, but it is why our viewers trust and value our work ethic. We continue to learn daily, by means of having our own experiences, then in return, sharing them with our valuable viewers. But, not without reiterating, that it is important for everyone to have their own experience as each will be different/ unique. And yes, as we already stated, we still recommend visiting the city as it has deep roots. Thanks for your comment.

Another good video guys. I first visited Oaxaca in '94, and I was there last in 2019. Everything is now 10 times more expensive, and not just due to the years and inflation. If you walk around Oaxaca town itself you will notice that there is not one single run-down property. Every single one has been restored so that the town is almost a Disneyfied version of a quaint Mexican town. Since most of these properties have been sold to extranjeros and rich Mexicans, often as second homes, rents are ridiculously high.
The best thing is the people have remained so nice and welcoming, even if many are now chasing the Yankee dollar.

I towed a car to Mexico - it needed a head gasket replacement and a rack'n'pinion installed. It was well worth it, because the mechanic did an amazing job. The mechanics in the USA are overcharging marking up both parts and labor, and lying to customers, too. One messed up the threads, so left the head bolt off - this needs to be re-threaded and that just isn't too hard to do. Labor costs are lower in Mexico and mechanics are honest and dependable. I've ALWAYS been satisfied with the work I've had done in Mexico, so today I'll tow my car there if necessary to benefit from honest work.

Just returned from Oaxaca. I was raised in the US but originally from Michuacan, Mex. I was there on vacation. Loved the food, the people the city. Like everywhere, there are some neighborhoods that are safer than others. I plan to return to see if it’s a good fit for me to live there in the near future. Unfortunately we are living in a time where it is difficult to find a place that is crime free. I live in LA, so I felt a lot safer in Oaxaca and the people are much nicer than in LA.

Interesting video. I was born in Oaxaca City. I've lived in many places because of my studies and work. After returning from Europe to settle here, I think your observations are somehow correct. Crime is much higher in Oaxaca City today than a few years ago. At the beginning of the COVID-19 confinement, I told my wife that crime would likely increase as a result. With many businesses closed, some people that lost their jobs turned to crime to feed their families. It is not a justification, but it is what happened. Unfortunately, poverty is highly correlated with the crime rate here; and Aurora is not a safe area in the city. You know what I mean. There are safer areas, but rent prices are higher. Downtown is not that safe anymore either. Air pollution and trash are a problem. Inefficient public administration together with some locals' bad habits like littering has taken a toll. As a tourist place, beware of tourist traps in Oaxaca City (just like in any tourist place in the world). The idea that gringos come here with tons of dollars in their pockets is partly the reason for some ridiculously high prices in cafes and restaurants. Places that cater to locals usually charge fair prices. All in all, I still think Oaxaca City is a good place to live if you can afford to have your own house in a relatively safe neighborhood. If you have your own car, even better; you won't have to deal with taxis or buses. But protests and blocked roads are a nightmare even with your own car!

When we first moved to Queretaro over a year ago, we rented in the Milenio area. Our most recent rental was a capita in the Las Brujas area (right near Alamos area). It can be more difficult to find something near Centro. You will also want to keep in mind that you may need to reevaluate your needs vs. wants as rentals near Centro wlll for the most part be more traditional, or older. For example, in Milenio, we had an oven but in our casitas in Las Brujas (where we could walk to Centro in 12-15 min), we did not have one. I will put the links to both of our apartment tours below so you can see them if you're interested. Side note ~ if having a larger/ more modern kitchen with an oven is important to you, check out Milenio and the Juriquilla area as you will find more options to fit that criteria. We've done multiple Neighborhood tours in Queretaro so feel free to check out the "Queretaro Neighborhood Tours" playlist.

You really never know how you will feel about a place unless you spend time there yourselves. And so much depends on your accommodation - if you can't find an affordable place and neighborhood that feels like home, it's not going to work. I fully understand not enjoying Guadalajara. I studied Spanish there in an area called Zapopan.
I was really looking forward to enjoying the area and although I meet some nice people there, it was highly disappointing. It was expensive, the traffic was insane, it was hot, and I couldn't even bargain for a lower taxi ride. The taxi basically said, if you don't want to pay his price, walk.
The architecture of downtown Guadalajara was uninspiring other than the cathedral. I'm glad I spent some time in this area of Guadalajara. Even though Zapopan is a segment of the large metro area, I probably won't be returning to the city. It just left me highly dissapointed and devoid of charm.

In all parts of the world, crime and insecurity increase when there is a wide gap between rich and poor. That is why we should elect politicians who legislate for more equality. I live in New York, crime levels here are increasing. There are more homeless people on the streets today than there were last year. Poverty does not only affect the poor, which is why we should elect politicians who also tax the richest and invest more in education and welfare benefits for the lower classes. So we can all live more secure.

Traffic and pollution seemed more this time. Prices have gone up about 50% since my visit in 2019. I will not allow you to speak ill of my city. I have lived here for more than 40 years and in 40 years I have never been robbed, not even an attempt to do so, and I am not saying that it does not exist, but it is a lie that when they arrived they wanted to assault them. in mexico there are people called teporochos and so they act strangely but they never assault and less if you already noticed them. the pollution that you say is the same here as in the streets in japan, it is not the whole city, there are areas like in any country including the united states where there are areas with a higher level of pollution than others, just like you want to live like Rich in areas that are tourist areas, in Oaxaca there are places 20 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by car to the center, and only because of the traffic, not because they are very far away. The same areas that you rent are expensive for the same reason that you choose to live practically near the center, instead, for example, in Santa Lucia del Camino, you can rent a 10*20 house for 2,000 or 3,000 Mexican pesos or in San Sebastian Tutla there are large houses that are rented for 4 thousand monthly. The truth is that I will not let them stain the name of Oaxaca in this way, if there is extreme poverty but the really poor people do not steal, they put their food stalls on the street, they sell candy at traffic lights, or even clean the windows of the cars, the people who steal are the ones who don't want to work and want everything for free, it's not because of the extreme poverty, and that you say that there are clothes lying on the street, you should have asked why it happens, in Oaxaca there is a percentage of people living on the street, either because of mental problems or because other states get rid of their homeless people by abandoning them here, they collect clothes, food, etc. from the trash in the trash cans, and over time when the clothes don't work for them they throw them in the street, it is not that they are from some robbery, that is absurd!!!... the truth is that it is unpleasant to speak ill of a state without actually having lived in it.

As for prices go, come to my small city in Portugal (45,000) where just yesterday we paid 0.90 (US D) for a cappuchino, 0.75 (USD) for an expresso, 1.80 (USD) for an orange juice, and 1.50 (USD) for wholewheat toast with melted cheese. Plus, there is no burning of trash. In fact we have different colored recycle bins everywhere and most people recycle. Our tap water is very good and there is no need to buy mineral water. Air pollution is limited to the odd forest fires that occur in the summer. Crime is almost none existent; there might be one homicide a year and it is usually a husband killing his estranged wife or an elderly villager shooting or hitting his neighbor over the head with a hoe because he took away the rivulet of water that both shared. I think that no matter where you go it is going to be difficult with two dogs. You could do it if you had a car, but having to take a plane everywhere really limits you. We have cats but we can always find a cat sitter when we travel. Cats are a lot easier to manage than dogs but then you might be allergic to them.

I am Mexican and have lived all my adult life in Oaxaca, it is true that in the non-tourist areas and especially in poor neighborhoods the garbage management leaves much to be desired, another thing to say is the lack of water supply.
It is a real and big political and environmental problem. This video tells many truths and I think the sad thing is that many people come to Oaxaca to live close to nature and cultural richness, but there are no policies to ensure Oaxacans an affordable, comfortable and safe housing, so it is sad that people come here and get disappointed, but it is sadder to be local and feel social displacement in the midst of these structural problems. Hi Ray, We always prefer to scout the soil ourselves rather than taking someone else's word for something (especially when it pertains to social media as there are too many incentives for people to NOT be honest/ up front unfortunately). When it comes to the internet, whatever you "search for" you will "find" information on; many times, such information is based off of what was already said by another, and then simply regurgitated This is why we do what we do on our channel. You may be new to our content, but it is why our viewers trust and value our work ethic. We continue to learn daily, by means of having our own experiences, then in return, sharing them with our valuable viewers. But, not without reiterating, that it is important for everyone to have their own experience as each will be different/ unique. Thanks for your comment.

@@WhyNotNow Let me start by saying, I do appreciate the info that you disseminate to the masses. I have just always been a person who does the research and groundwork before leaping. For instance, the wife and I have 3 weeks booked at an Air BNB in January 2023 to scope Queretaro out. We chose January so that we can see just how cold it does get there even though we could just look at Accuweather. Research and investigation are in fact very important and have saved my butt numerous times. I do agree that you must pick your sources carefully, that is why I do not rely solely on channels such as yours, because many times there is a hidden agenda. I rely on a variety of sources!

@Ray Parker Completely understand Ray. Thanks for your comment. Very nice, we hope you enjoy your future visit to Queretaro. If this helps, we have a playlist called "Queretaro Neighborhood Tours" which has multiple videos we've done on foot th-cam.com/video/2M4UKYTN_Lg/w-d-xo.html Yes, it is important to choose your sources wisely and to be completely frank Ray, sometimes even that will fail despite your best efforts simply because what is good for another, won't be for someone else, and each personal experience will be unique. We ways research but we have come to learn that personal, tangible experiences are second to none. 😉

Near tourist areas prices can be higher; however, most people learn places a few blocks toward the local Colonias the prices are for the locals, so don't be afraid to walk out if prices are higher. In Mexico, they have very strong consumer laws, so if restaurants advertise one price and charge another, remind them they cannot overcharge according to PROFECO - they'll be fined more than they can afford for certain if they switch pricing on you.

I love Oaxaca, been living there over a year. Too many gringos think they can get drunk on the streets and do what they want, and don't want to understand the inequality. Yes, there are barrios for the rich, like Xochimilco, and I don't eat there. But there are many places. Coffee? The Mercado Pascua on Porfirio Diaz. There's a coffee puesto, as good as what you get in Europe, for $20 pesos. Look around. Hang with the people. Learn Spanish. Respect the people.

Crime in Oaxaca city is not very common. I lived there for years and I think that crime may be common in some areas, which you should avoid specially at night. But there are municipios inside the city that are very safe. Also if you don't have a car it could be a little more dangerous. Still, I was never robbed in the city during 18 years. Most common crimes should be robbery of houses and parts of cars.

Please don't say you are being "displaced." Oaxaca just like most other big cities globally are being gentrified on at such a rapid rate. As US-ians ( I don't say Americans because technically aren't all peoples living as far north as the Yukon and as far south as the tip of Chile and Argentina living on an American continent) there is an absolutely privilege that the majority of the world doesn't have. Displacement is when you are being FORCED out of your home due to political issues such as lack of affordable housing, war, gentrification, eminent domain. You have the privilege and ability to pack your bags and find the a place you are comfortable and happy with. True displaced peoples are forced out and don't have that luxury.

    • @WhyNotNow
      @WhyNotNow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

We appreciate you perspective as we share the same concerns (and many more which we discuss on a regular basis) however, you seem to be prejudging us and I'm sorry, but you clearly don't know us, or what we stand for. Additionally, I will use temporarily displaced at my discretion as it also means when someone, or something is "moved from its usual/ typical place" and that usual place for us, is a homebase ~ we do not typically stay in multiple temporary living situations (due to not be able to stay in a place for valid reasons, such as health issues for one might I add). Please do not create something to be offensive/ disrespectful that in NO way, shape, or form was intended to be. Side note~ we understand the geography of the "Americas" and the "North American continent" etc. but you should try to understand that people born in the U.S.A (of any color, race, religion) are referred to as "Americans" and it is not meant by most of "us" who just so happen to be born there to belittle, or take anything away from anyone else. Take care.

I could walk anywhere any time day or night. At the time 1 was 69 to 71 years old. More than 8 years in Central America never had any problems. But then I have no fears and can more than handle situations. Like the time I went to Chicago in 2018 and 5 armed men made the mistake of trying to rob me. I sent 3 to the hospital, all required surgery. I was hit in the head with a metal baseball bat but took him down. Quite a bruise, bleeding concussion and fractured orbital, byt was flying home to Nicaragua less than 60 hours later Besides the guy with the baseball bat, one had a 38 revolver the other a sawed off 12 ga. double barell, all concealed under trench coats. @@WhyNotNow I know how to listen and understand…again pollution-crime? Where? I didn’t see any, the other things you mention and say that’s you personal point of view and that’s ok but is like saying I moved to Miami and is too hot! What did you expect? Last thing Americans are obsessed with crime in Mexico because that’s what they hear and they say is dangerous without having ever being victimized…when you live in the US you should be well adapted to crime since that happens everyday, everywhere massive and randomly.

A piece of advice (for you, and others who fit the mold) and then I'm officially done going back and forth, before jumping the gun and judging another, learn what they actually stand for first. This comes by simply not running to criticize someone via social media by means of watching ONE video. Lastly, remember to hold yourself to the same standards you place on others. I'm quite sure you would not appreciate it if someone took everything that you said, or did over the course of your life and was quick to judge/ categorize you. You obviously do not know us/ what we stand for.

Not to do a I told you so as I didn't, but back when I was guessing where you would move after Queretaro I was thinking about Oaxaca and decided you wouldn't move there because its too obvious and you guys are more clever than that. Oops. So when you did move there I was underwhelmed to hear that was your choice. Yes I have been there for a wonderful vacation but I quickly determined it was not a place that I'd want to live. The housing (not only) inflation and unpleasant transport problems have been very well publicized elsewhere. So I for one am pleased that you decided to leave Oaxaca quickly. Its better to take your losses than to stubbornly try to make a place fit that just doesn't.
That said of course all places have pros and cons.

Thanks for sharing your experience/ thoughts Craig. Yes, indeed there is a big difference when it comes to visiting, and actually living long term in any city. We are still clever dont worry....😉you should know by now we would rather scout the soil ourselves rather than taking someone else's word for something (especially when it pertains to social media as there are too many incentives for people to NOT be honest/ up front unfortunately). This is why we do what we do, and it is how we continue to learn, as well as share our honest experiences with others.

But living in other cities we were fine and have found very nice apartments that wasn't charging us a gringo tax. Overall Oaxaca city was a decent place it just was not for us.

I have lived in Oaxaca de Juarez for eight years now and have found nothing about the place that I do not like. For less pollution and perhaps less crime I would recommend a smaller town in the Sierra Nortes like Ixtlan.

I am Mexican, I just returned from a 4 days trip to Oaxaca city, and I have to say it was very dissapointing to witness the total abandonement of the City. It is covered with graffiti (the bad kind), broken sidewalks, unattended homeless people, and in general no public care whatsoever. It is very obvious that the State and municipal authorities don’t care either about the City or the in habitants, in my opinion it does not deserve at all the title given by UNESCO as a world heritage site or even a “Pueblo Mágico” for that máster. Much better cities are QUERETARO, GUANAJUATO, MORELIA, ZACATECAS, MERIDA, PUEBLA.
