It’s important to recognize that authenticity is unattainable and that as audience members, we tend to ask for more than what is appropriate from TH-camrs. I can’t give anyone everything and neither can someone give their entire self to me. It’s romantic to imagine scenarios where people belong to one another and know each other inside and out, but it’s impossible. Really good analysis on the phenomenon of vlogs! I think they’ve changed our perception of our idols for the better, but in some cases, for the worse.
I loved hearing your take on this, the genre of vlogging is so fascinating because it pushes both the social contract we have with entertainment and also each other. What is the role of authenticity play in art? And what then happens if we attempt to make our life “Art” It reminds me a lot of the weird dynamic of stand comedians, where at some point i have to remember “wait this didn’t ACTUALLY happen to you.” But i ignore that thought because im really here for the persona and the spectacle of narrative i guess. Comedians are the OG Vloggers WOW 🤯
Yeah that point about how authenticity itself is in some ways an illusion can be really interesting when you take it in the lens of dual identities & code switching. I only realised I code switch recently, my cousin pointed it out to me the way my accent changes and pidgin words crawl into my vocab when I'm with family and disappear when on the phone or with a white friend. It's really interesting & for a little bit I felt kinda ashamed like was I pretending to be something else for my friends/among white people? Idk. But I've started saying these words and phrases with my friends and even in my own videos and maybe that's a subconscious attempt at finding authenticity? But I think you're right that we are far too complicated and multifaceted to have only one true core "self" in the way authenticity conceptually requires. We're constantly growing & learning we're never the same person twice. So what does authentic then mean within the context of identity that isn't quite so clearly defined? Plus existing within a society that deems certain expressions of existence as evil/indecent etc necessarily means that some people just aren't afforded "authenticity". I'm sorry lmao I could really run with this concept and write you a whole ass essay but I'm gonna round it up here lmao love the content switch up tbh I really want to do more video essays but GCSEs and whatever fuckery Bo jo's got going on isn't exactly great : \
Alice! I've been watching your videos; thank you for giving us a lot of reasonable food for thought. I like how you pointed out in the beginning that after seeing a film, we just return to our normal lives. I think it's a great reminder of how life doesn't always need to be glamorized for it to be enjoyable. And with regard to the video, it might be best to take most things we consume online with a grain of salt and not let our admiration for our favorite vloggers consume us entirely. You made great points in this video as always!
My, oh my. I watch a lot of those TH-camrs as specified in the video and I didn't even realize how parasocial relationships between viewers and content creators are becoming more and more evident. Great analysis on this outpouring phenomenon.
I was going to comment that I would love to be your friend"and then realized this is exactly what a parasocial relationship is haha but anyway, I'm in love with your videos! btw, I am a young woman, but I live in Brazil actually!! lol
To be honest I have never really come across a vlogger who I have found that I have clicked with. I much prefer to step away from the screen and form my relationships that way since they're more accountable and easier to manage. I don't like the idea though that authenticity is something that is unobtainable because I think that people can be very authentic. I think the reason people get so attached to their favorite vloggers is because they see being on/offline as a binary when really it is interconnected into our lives. I'm just convinced that this feeling of a para-social relationship exacerbates when people engage with a binary view of the internet due to how they see this newly found relationship being made online as something mystical and otherworldly when really it is just like every other relationship.
For me watching some vloggers just gives me the motivation that I can't always sustain myself. When I think about famous people that I would be glad to meet and be friends with, I think about the fact that these same awesome people could already be in my circle of people but in a different way. Instead of dreaming about meeting that one person for a minute, think about the awesome time you could spend with the relatives and friends you already know.

This was so thoughtful and mature and insightful. And I've learned a new word. Yes,that describes the sort of relationship we have with the vloggers we follow. I'm a 66 year old woman in England. I'm far too old to be watching vlogs on TH-cam! Anyway I'm not on Tik Tok! I mainly watch vlogs on Gardening,History and Philosophy but it's surprising what will pop up unexpected and turns out very good,as with your thoughtful vlogs. I do get insights into some lifestyles that I wouldn't otherwise have access to,like living in Paris,or being gay, that Damon Dominque covers both, and not something I would come across in real life.
framing the relationship between audience and spectacle as a contract or deal is a fun idea to play around with; it invokes the kind of solemnity an ancient Greek audience would have required to enter into the sacred precinct of the theater
Oh and sorry to like spam you with comments but I also remember the video I posted after new year & I remember very specifically designing the thumbnail differently and choosing a different set up with different lighting to make it all seem sombre. I was reading off a script the entire time. But it's not totally manufactured. The script was originally a message I wrote to one of my closest friends who was having a hard time. Things often have that duality. It's using manufactured means to convey true emotions and I feel that's what a lot of art is, that conjunction of manufacture and reality, approaching truth through the medium of falsehoods. Such an interesting topic! Another thing that I see makes vloggers a bit unhealthy to their audience, is the fact that when they appear to be showing their life "as it is" , they are actually showing us a very editec and crafted version of their life, and that can cause false expectations, or like the idea that they have this perfect lifestyles that anyone can achieve
Lovely analysis! I am SO in love with your mind; and, I don't say that lightly. You tackle subjects which I myself have wondered about, and you present them in such a wonderful way. I see the same dilemma in social media. Sometimes we are not so close enough to someone to know more about then beyond what they post and this kind of relationship emerges. It happened a lot to me and some friendships during the first months of the pandemic. Usually happens when I don't create a strong bond to someone I used to study with, for example. Liquid times...

One of the things I have noticed about vloggers as they rise to prominence is that they seem to have cloaked disdain for their viewers. They have grown to subtly despise the burdens of the parasocial relationship that their own narcissism has created.
One thing that I have noticed is that it seems that strong paraosocial relationships only seem to happen with "enternaiment youtubers" which would be: media reviewers, vloggers, videogamers, singers, dancers and not with the non entairntainers like those who upload videos debunking creationistis, or anti religion content in general

Questions: 1.) As a white privileged woman, are you aware of your internalized xenophobia? 2.) Why are you implying that ethnic minorities read… to seek western validation? Why the micro aggression? 3.) Are you a hypocrite for turning off your comments after people called your racist white ass?
I've been having a Para social relationship with a Singer/Actress who's famous on Tiktok, TH-cam & Instagram. Because of Her, I set myself to become a social media influencer with accomplishing to have videos that have made over a few hundred thousands and to even my most recent making over 1 million views on Tiktok. Let's just say she motivated me to get social media famous lol. However She doesn't know I exist and my goal is to get her to notice me. I'm obsessed with Her, I have her new album Signed by Her and I have a Frame of Her with Her Signature on my Wall in my Bedroom lol. Also I've been private messaging Her on Instagram for nearly 4 years. Is this a Healthy Thing? Should I be happy She's gained me some fame status on social media? Even though I am Single. I do date occasionally however I am not really that interested in them to begin with. Because of my Para Social Relationship with this Person.
