The owners manual recommends using the wind wings when going downhill to help with the tiny brakes.
My sister had one back in the 70s. I'm 6'6" and could drive it although shifting into reverse was a bit of a problem. My sister got a flat front tire and a trucker helped her change the tire. He couldn't figure out how to use the jack so he just lifted the front by hand and swapped tires.

I had a 1970 360 Young same color as one in this video! I was 14 and used my news paper route money to buy it about 1976, for $100. it barely ran... needed a piston and cylinder which I got at a wrecking yard because even though it was only 6 years old you couldn't get many parts for it. At 14 it was my first car and had so much fun, I wish I still had it now at age 62
I owned 4 of these from 1971 right thru the late 90's. Only 26HP and 360cc of throbbing air cooled 2-stroke Subaru power but one of the most fun cars you can ever imagine....if you're not in a big hurry to get somewhere. I still have some new dealer brochures for these rascals. Anybody need a brochure???

That's gotta be such a fun car to drive.
I had one back in Chicago in the mid-'70s, I loved it, till it blew a head gasket and I couldn't find a replacement. You could pull a U-turn in an alley, and yes I could easily lift the front of this car 2 or 3 feet off the ground with hardly any effort. That engine was a 2 cylinder, sounded like a lawn mower and it could hit 40 mph if you were going downhill with the wind behind you. I don't remember ever putting gas in it. Never did get used to the suicide doors though, I kept slamming my shoulder into the door trying to open it. Oh yeah, and the roof was just a one-piece sheet of something that was light and flexible, it slid into a channel all the way around. You could just push up on it, pop it out and you had a convertible, kinda. But there was no room in the car to store the roof. Good memories. If I remember correctly I paid $65. for that car.
Circa 1972 local dealer Knots Rambler Ranch also sold the Subaru 360 cars & vans for which, as I recall the car, was $1095.
A member of their design team must have seen a FIAT 500 somewhere.

I bought a 1969 model ,white in color ,paid 150.00 dollars for it in 1972 during the Arab oil embargo. The car got about 50 miles per gallon. I really enjoyed that car,wish I had kept it but it was fun while it lasted.

In 1969 I bought one of those new from a Subaru dealership in Titusville, Fl. for $800 dollars. It was supposed to be $1,200 but the dealership could not sell them so Ron Norris GMC/Subaru was dumping them for $800 dollars. I put a $100 deposit on the car. My dad made me get my money back because he said it was a death trap.

Antique? I remember when they were NEW! We had a small dealer in Glendora, CA where I grew up. MSRP was $1199 for these. They sold like cat turds, so they were finally marked down to $799. Nice to see one still running around.
I owned one in college - not for very long, I sold it to an enthusiast, with a spare engine.

These are really cool cars, personally i think subaru would be smart to take the impreza base and basically make a modern styling of this. Basically make the awd beetle people wanted from the dune.

I remember that there were so many of these left unsold that someone bought a bunch, removed all the windows, welded in roll cages and people paid to drive them around an off-road park and the idea was to roll them and generally beat them up.
And now I am deciding about paying 5 grand for a non running one....times have changed

My 1970 Subaru was the pickup truck model. It would fit in the bed of my Ford F100 if I left the tailgate down on the six foot bed!

I used to own a '62 Beetle. I never wanted power windows and power mirrors and some other things because it's more stuff to break down. The starter went on my old Beetle. I used to start it by wrapping a belt around the generator pulley or popping the clutch. Despite what we are told, I think there is a big market for simpler cars.
@@daniellarson3068 Absolutely. My brother had a 1974 Honda AN-600, a two cylinder, two seat mini car with an air cooled 600cc engine. It got 45+ mpg too. Wouldn't win any drag races, but not everyone wants 12 mpg; some people actually appreciate economy!

@@daniellarson3068 Well, Oscar wanted to look at putting the little Honda on a propane system which seems to me -- I'm not a mechanic-- but that would be even 'greener' than most electric cars, wouldn't you think? Based on the information that electric cars need DIESEL generators, need lithium, etc.
@@amycaprari9951 Electric cars can be charged with nuclear, solar or other emission free (green) sources of electricity. The propane wouldn't have been greener, but would have been fun. Have a good one.
