I love the shift from “someone to” to just “somebody” in the second verse it’s subtle enough that I can see some people missing it but it perfectly portrays his realization that he yearns for someone to give him what he describes.
I think Neil Patrick Harris is such an underrated actor. I mean he is best known about himym which is a comedy but you can clearly see that he is capable to do far more than one genre of acting.
I remember complaining about my relationship one day and then it hit me- this is being alive, it’s not perfect but at least I’m living and feeling and have something to fight for and that’s a lot to be thankful for. I didn’t even know this song existed!
I love the encouragement he gets from the few friends (after all the criticism from the others) to push him to keep digging to get his answers. I absolutely love that.
I kind of like how (and this is how I see it) he almost seems to mock the idea of being with someone at first, and then you can see that moment where he truly like wants all of these things that he’s saying.
I know I've commented on this before, but my god. I just love this cast's performance of this song. It really drives home the point of the song. Neil's acting says it all. Just gorgeous. Cannot wait to see Company in April!!
something unique in this performance… there’s a journey here, growth, some personal discovery…. Being Alive can become a “set piece” the 11 o’clock number… i think NPH takes it further and that’s a great thing
I think it would be easy to interpret this scene as a man mocking marriage by asking what you get, but from this performance at least what I interpret is a man who’s genuinely asking. He doesn’t understand why people are so pro marriage, but he wants to. So he tries to ask without asking through the guise of mockery. And over the course of the song, he slowly begins to finally understand. Idk if that makes sense or if others agree but that’s my take on this performance. Absolutely amazing subtle acting from NPH
I've heard many, many renditions of Being Alive, beginning with the original Company cast. None is more magnificent than Neil Patrick Harris. You actually feel him work through the idea of inching from alone to coupled.
I discovered recently Drivers version, both are deep, one says losing love isn't so far from dying, the other one you can't pretend knowing how it is to be alive without the strongest and most precious feelings.
Rosalie craigs versikn from the 2018 west end revival is my favourite as she really nails the anxious, frustrated but openness to having a relationship feeling.
Someone to hold you too close Someone to hurt you too deep Someone to sit in your chair And ruin your sleep Someone to need you too much Someone to know you too well Someone to pull you up short To put you through hell Someone you have to let in Someone whose feelings you spare Someone who, like it or not Will want you to share A little a lot Someone to crowd you with love Someone to force you to care Someone to make you come through Who'll always be there As frightened as you Of being alive Being alive Being alive Being alive Somebody hold me too close Somebody hurt me too deep Somebody sit in my chair And ruin my sleep And make me aware Of being alive Being alive Somebody need me too much Somebody know me too well Somebody pull me up short And put me through hell And give me support For being alive Make me alive Make me alive Make me confused Mock me with praise Let me be used Vary my days But alone Is alone Not alive Somebody crowd me with love Somebody force me to care Somebody let come through I'll always be there As frightened as you To help us survive Being alive Being alive Being alive

Great, FAITHFUL recreation of the show by accomplished performers - no gimmicks or ignoble contemporization. So glad it was done, since we have no video recording of the original production.
I have immense respect for NPH, as I do Larry Kurt, John Barrowman, Raul Esparza ( I saw his performance live) however, all I can think of was Dean Jones rendition as captured in the Pennebaker/Hegedus documentary of the Original Cast Recording of Company. It was the definitive rendition. Dean’s singing was magical. It was as timeless as Sondheim’s genius. Pure perfection.
I don't prefer Dean's version, and... it's hard to describe why because I don't know the words for it, but the way he says some of the words, especially those with "L"s in them, are very "tonguey". He says them like his tongue is heavy in his mouth.

I think Neil Patrick Harris is such an underrated actor. I mean he is best known about himym which is a comedy but you can clearly see that he is capable to do far more than one genre of acting.
HIMYM hits the heartstrings a lot too and making a guy like Barney Stinson likable is seriously impressive.
Doogie Hauser is how I know him.
He also played and young sociopath who started fires, he was also the voice of Spider-man and the Flash.
Under rated? He is a huge star of tv and Broadway. I think saying “under rated” is tiresome on comments.
he is basicaly more serious barney. one note actor but he is good at that one note
‘I’ll always be there as frightened as you to help us survive being alive’ what a touching lyric! Pure Sondheim genius right there!!
I remember complaining about my relationship one day and then it hit me- this is being alive, it’s not perfect but at least I’m living and feeling and have something to fight for and that’s a lot to be thankful for. I didn’t even know this song existed!

Is that Stephen Colbert in the red on the left without his glasses?
yep
The benefits of reading comments. Was wondering the same thing.
OMG....you're so right. Without the glasses...I wasn't so sure at first.
I was so surprised to see him when I first saw this haha
Colbert was a theater major at Northwestern before joining Second City. No stranger to the legit stage.
Every Sondheim song gets better the more you listen to it. Happy for this one to be my current obsession.
I just got chills. Never knew he was this good damnnnn I wanna see him live
hey babe are you okay i noticed you were watching neil patrick harris "being alive" again
I knew he could sing, but damn, he can SING!
it would be great if it wasn't with Patty pig mouth!

Yes! And 2021
And still fitting 2022 perfectly, too. I think we all miss truly living.
Can confirm 2023 and the beginning of 2024 too
EXCELLENT.
REST IN PEACE STEPHEN,
I have immense respect for NPH, as I do Larry Kurt, John Barrowman, Raul Esparza ( I saw his performance live) however, all I can think of was Dean Jones rendition as captured in the Pennebaker/Hegedus documentary of the Original Cast Recording of Company. It was the definitive rendition. Dean’s singing was magical. It was as timeless as Sondheim’s genius. Pure perfection.
Dean was famously going through a brutal divorce at the time, which might have given him that extra edge over a happily married NPH.

when he yells STOP! I fully expected him to turn into Sweeney Todd and start singing to his razors

How can you not LOVE Neil Patrick Harris!!!
i like how literally none of us expected John Cryer to be there
Jon Cryer's dad is a long time stage actor. He played Peron in the early days of Evita on tour.
LOL!
How many Arrowverse stars have been in theatre?
Neil Patrick Harris always delivers and is such an amazing actor and singer. He helps one see the true meaning of this song. So well done. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
quite amazing. also I didn't know Colbert was in this production. OMG....Stephen... where are you....where are you....we need you!
Totally BRILL! Harris made Soundheim proud with this performance.
Who’s at 2:17 I wanna marry a dude that looks like that
This is my favorite filmed version of this song. NPH and the cast and that orchestra... just pulls the tears right out of a person.
Love this so much. I saw Company in London last year with Patti in this role with a female Bobbie. I was blown away. John Sivorn.
A female Bobby, just what the world needs. I thought Bobby was already female.
Everyone can relate to this...in some way
This song always makes me tear up!
