I love the shift from “someone to” to just “somebody” in the second verse it’s subtle enough that I can see some people missing it but it perfectly portrays his realization that he yearns for someone to give him what he describes.

Braaaaavvvvooo!! That was FANTASTIC!! NPH is an incredible actor and singer, love him! He held a very long note so perfectly at the end there. I just decided to test this on myself to see if I could sustain it as long as he did hehe.😛 I breathed right in as far as I could go, and I just about managed to hold that very long note at the end. It was so alliiiiiiiiiivvvvve and breathtaking heheh.😛 Anyone else out there tested this on themselves, or just me being a little bit silly hehe.

I think it would be easy to interpret this scene as a man mocking marriage by asking what you get, but from this performance at least what I interpret is a man who’s genuinely asking. He doesn’t understand why people are so pro marriage, but he wants to. So he tries to ask without asking through the guise of mockery. And over the course of the song, he slowly begins to finally understand. Idk if that makes sense or if others agree but that’s my take on this performance. Absolutely amazing subtle acting from NPH

I've heard many, many renditions of Being Alive, beginning with the original Company cast. None is more magnificent than Neil Patrick Harris. You actually feel him work through the idea of inching from alone to coupled.

Fantastic performance, which is definitely enhanced by including the preamble that sets up the context and great delivery by NPH. The vocal performance of Julian Ovenden at the BBC Proms in 2010 is also worth checking out. NPH’s got the edge on the acting, but Julian knocks the vocal out of the park.

I love the encouragement he gets from the few friends (after all the criticism from the others) to push him to keep digging to get his answers. I absolutely love that.

The only my complain that the speed is to much. The song should unroll. I think they know that but have chosen the tempo. The text feels crumpled.

This is my favourite rendition of this song that I've heard. I think too many of the other ones have too much technically good singing that end up lacking emotion. Neil Patrick Harris manages to both sound good and genuine instead of feeling melodramatic with bombastic and loud singing.

This version has ruined all other versions of this for me (at least the one's I've come across). NPH sings it with so much rawness, it's so compelling. Adam Driver's version is beautiful too for it's rawness.
