it's insane that you're covering these guys. they were basically an anarcho-punk group, got one hit, and messed around at every award show because they could, and went right back to anarchist music again. iconic
It's kinda poetic that their final release was thanks to the death of the woman that caused them to start making political-focused music to begin with. Oh BTW, Chumbawumba also made an "extension" cover of The Beatles' 20 second song, Her Majesty, and it's just as dark as their discography.
I have to mention this every time someone brings up Chumbawamba: I studied Film at Middlesex University in London and Dunstan Bruce was my lecturer in the documentary course. At the time he was still working on I Get Knocked Down and he showed us the trailer for it. He was just the loveliest man and an incredibly helpful teacher.
This video rules! Just one point: Mumia Abu Jamal hasn't been released from prison; his death sentence was overturned in 2001, but he is still incarcerated.
Wanna go even further? You know part of the CD jewel caases that held the CD in place, that little circular thing that's shaped like sphincter? Directly behind it is a picture of a human sphincter. Yeah, that one.
I actually used to live nextdoor to Alice from the band and we used to take turns cat sitting for each other! She’s absolutely lovely and still a massive leftie
Comment sections are full of similar stories about ex-members of Chumbawamba. Fame never got to their heads. They used their moment in the spotlight to rally for the causes they believed in. Meanwhile, Rage Against the Machine broke up right before the 2000 election when they could have been very helpful to the Ralph Nader campaign. They couldn't just hold it together for a few more months?
This is absolutely perfect, i've heard of Chumbawamba's crazy long story from One Hit Wonderland episode on Thumbthumping, and now there's a video detailing their story in full. This is also such a surprise pick, never would have imagined this band getting a DDD.

2:04 this might be a joke that I'm missing but the "middle class" is not typically associated with supporting the miners in Britain. Middle Class here refers to pretty much everyone without a title or connections to the aristocracy that aren't employed in more manual ("blue collar" would be the equivalent) work, or with close family connections to that manual work. Most of Thatcher's support came from the Middle Classes, and though there were definitely many middle class people, particularly young people like Chumbawumba, opposed to Thatcher, it was by no means a given that a 'middle class' person would support Thatcher. This isn't really a correction tho as I think middle class is defined differently in the US - I just think it's interesting how we subdivide ourselves Big up Chumbawumba theyre great
Considering both have made deep dives into the career of Chumbawamba, Mic The Snare has finally evolved into the younger, peppier, and visible version of Todd In The Shadows
I'm only 10 minutes in and I've already thought more about Chumbawumba than I have in my life beforehand 😅 Thank you for teaching us the stories of these bands!
When I got to college in 2011 and started using the internet to dig deeper into music, one of the first things I did was check out discographies of One-Hit-wonders because I was always fascinated by the idea that "this one song cant be all they are worth" and Chumbawumba and Midnight Oil were the two that I got really into and loved the fact I dug into their works. Its crazy and awesome to see you just putting your balls out there covering these guys 10 years after they retired and letting more people know they were much more than one song. Just amazing.
Midnight Oil actually played on SNL in 1993 (Truganini and My Country). I got Earth and Sun and Moon on cassette when I was 12 and that was my favorite album at the time.
I grew up in Leeds and these guys were seen as local legends. Anarchy was one of my dad's favourite albums, it was on heavy rotation in our house in the 90s - Give The Anarchist A Cigarette and Enough Is Enough were my absolute jams! It's a shame people don't really know them outside of their most famous hit, they're an incredibly interesting group. Oh, and their trumpet player now occasionally does session work for my mum's band! (A Latin American folk band, no less)
Few errors. "That's How Grateful We Are" is about the Hungarian uprising of 1956 where a giant statue of Stalin was torn down. Mumia abu Jamal's death sentence was overturned in 2001. He remains in prison and still advocating for a retrial. "On eBay" is about how Iraqi museums were looted and ancient artifacts, art ended up put on eBay.
In 1999, I got a book called Rock: the Rough Guide and Chumbawamba was one entry that interested me more than most. I was surprised to hear back in 1997 that the guys who did that song that was currently being playing ad nauseum were an anarchist collective who had a connection to Crass. The book confirmed it.
"Middle class" doesn't mean the same thing in the UK that it does in the US. In Britain, someone is "middle-class" if they have a bachelor's degree and eat croissants. This does not describe Chumbawamba.
Happened to rewatch the Todd in The Shadows episode on this today, so I was excited to see this come up. Glad to see more info on the band, it's great how much more depth there is to them than being a OHW. A band so punk they rebelled against being punk.
What have you done Mic!?! I was perfectly happy having written Chumbawamba off as that band with that one song.... Now I will have friends question my sanity as I try to expound to everyone how those Tub-thumpers are one of my favorite Folk bands....

He suggested this EP. (Boff also founded Commoners Choir who are an amazing collective)
I was under the impression that they picked a nonsense word for their name and the "North African drummers is Paris" explanation was just one of many they'd have for when people asked how they came up with it
Chumbawamba came into my life from an early boyfriend who had seen them live in the late '80s. The combination of dance music, punk, and folk was exactly what the doctor ordered. Slap was the newest album at the time and I followed their career ever since. I was one of those annoyed punks when they hit the top 40, although it was hard to deny what a great song tub thumping was. Anarchy was my Bible and WYSIWYG brings back turn of the millennium memories that tears at my heart. Thank you so much for doing this. Most engaging "one hit wonder" band ever.
To answer the question, "Was Chumbawamba successful in seeding their anarchist ideology into the mainstream?" I must say yes. Perhaps it was because I was already there, long years before Tubthumping let me down. I knew it was methodical, I just needed time... Then they made Un and all was forgiven (the whole album is worthy). A clear indicator of their seeding success is that two of my three children, all raised on Chumbawamba, still listen- but even better than their musical choices is their lifestyles- their conscientious, humanitarian ideologies that don't need the music I raised them on. It just so happens that we can enjoy the music together.
I got the privilege to watch Dunstan Bruces' 'I get knocked down' doc recently and to my surprise he was there in person to answer questions and just talk to all us folk afterwards.
Man this was a nice journey. A band millions see as a one hit wonder that didn't exist before or after tubthumping started as experimental punk sharply taking it to the thatcher administration, to going big and seemingly abandoning their roots only to use their five minutes of fame to bring their message to the world, and finally coming to a later age, taking in worldwide inspiration and adopting a folk style because they didn't have to conform to anyone's expectations for them before calling it in. Oh, and one last flip off to thatcher once the good news broke. Legends. You gave me far more respect for this band.
Succeeful people don't become that way overnight. Most people you see as a glance_wealth, a great career, purpose, is the result of hard work and hustle over time . I pray that anyone reading will be successful in life
I love this I think it would be great if you did more videos like this. I already know about the discographies of Kanye West, Radiohead, etc, but I had no idea that chumbawumba had a such a rich discography, it would be great to see more bands and artists like this. I would also highly recommend that you do a ddd on Raymond Scott, as he was an insanely interesting musician that it feels no one really talks about
Singsong and a Scrap was on replay for me when it came out. there was just something so soothing about the vocals. I do wish more people knew about them, really.
Sometimes I'm excited for a DDD because I love a band and just wanna hear Mic talk about them, but today I'm excited because I have little knowledge of Chumbawumba and always wanted to hear about the punk band that made a pop hit
Sometimes i feel like it's all a simulation. I just got into Chumbawamba like a week or two ago and suddenly my favourite youtube channel drops this gem. Thank you mr Mic
What an interesting deep dive into an off kilter band I only really know about because of that one Todd in the Shadows video I can't wait for Mic to put out a video on Frank Zappa's entire discography....coward.
When they started singing Bella Ciao I gasped. After this video I’m pretty sure they got the meaning right and after years of hearing it remixed as dance music because of La Casa De Papel it’s such a relief!
Loved this! Thank you! Side note: Mumia is still NOT free... And On eBay is actually about the looting of Iraq's ancient relics by our own soldiers, who were then found to be selling them online.
Yeah there's several times where Mic doesn't catch three point bring made. I guess he didn't know about the website where you could read the liner notes.
I know there’s way more popular artists you could go through, but I love the idea of picking a one-hit/minor-hit wonder and going through their discography. There’s plenty of gems in there!! That being said, I am to totally voting for Nine Inch Nails on your form.
Thanks for doing this and educating the masses on the best anarchist dance music collective ever! That said, there’s a deeper and more sinister catalyst behind “on EBay” from the “Un” album that deserved a mention.
I think I have the original cover version of Anarchy. It was sitting in the front of my car when my mom came to visit once. I started with Chumbawamba with every other American on Tubthumper, but I moved past it very quickly and couldn't get enough of the rest of the album and worked backward from there. Honestly, I think it's the best band of all time.
9:17 was unexpected enough that I did a real-life double-take at my phone. I love that you covered these guys. Underrated band that people tend not to know about beyond the one song, but definitely an interesting group for a deep dive!
Great overview! Thanks. I recently listened to, “the day the Nazi died,” which is a brilliant insightful song! Prophetic. It made me want to do a deeper dive into this band. Grateful that I found your video.
as a chumbawamba nerd 🤓 that is not Mave Dillon 1:12 that is Jude Abbott who joined after Swinging with Raymond and I have more to say but I can’t remember that this current moment… to be continued
How To Get Your Band on TV is so hilarious. Probably my fave song by them, except the lyrics referring to Freddie Mercury as being born white (he's not White lol)
If you ever want to do another DDD on a one-hit wonder with a surprisingly long career and a strong political bent, Midnight Oil is well worth checking out. (Australians, please don't kill me. I know Midnight Oil is/was a big deal down under, but here in the US and throughout most of the world they're mainly known for Beds Are Burning.)
look, all i'm saying is that chumbawamba via tubthumper was my first exposure to anarchism as an ideology, and now i'm a socialist, so maybe they were right?
I recently discovered Chumbawamba a couple years back when I found Tubthumper at a thrift store. It quickly (and unexpectedly) became one of my favourite albums ever. Since then I've been slowly listening to the rest of their discography. Glad to learn more about their history here 👍
Chumbawamba is such a brilliant group; often seen as a one hit wonder in the states, if you really explore their 30 year history of music, it's such a unique, fascinating and fun ride. They deserve much more attention than they got. Even if they're not your style of music (any of their numerous, ever evolving styles that is), its hard not to celebrate what they've done, and how they did it. Great retrospective video here
Bizarrely, I found out about Chumbawamba as a teenager when I was super curious about anarcho-punk, unaware that they were the band that did that one song about getting knocked down and such. Unrelatedly, I am currently an anarchist. Life is weird.
Most of my listening nowadays on streaming is in discography spanning. And Chumbawumba was an absolute pleasure, favorite, and have a lot of songs that are just perfect for their moods. Love them to bits.
This video and Todd in the Shadow’s video on Tubthumping are what I hope help inspire a cultural reappraisal of this band. Like outside of the hit they had a lot more to say and quite a lot of it was pretty meaningful. Love the video Mr Mic T. Snare.
Been into this band since 1986, first saw them live during my second gig in 1986 with Conflict and City Indians so know a lot about them, impressed you included the I'm thick single, not well known

I pray that anyone reading will be successful in life
Talking of being successful. I think that I'm blessed because if not I wouldn't have met someone who is as spectacular as Expert Mr Mark William
I have heard a lots about investments with Mr William Vail and how good he is, please how safe were the profits

DANBERT NOBACON IS MY DRAMA TEACHER! HES A LOCAL LEGEND and an incredibly sweet man to boot
This video Chumbas my Wambas
Just a small correction, Mumia Abu Jamal was not released from prison, he was taken off death row in 2001, but he remains in prison to this day.
What an interesting deep dive into an off kilter band I only really know about because of that one Todd in the Shadows video
I can't wait for Mic to put out a video on Frank Zappa's entire discography....coward.
I mean, he’d have to wait until it’s finished. He’s still releasing albums, not letting a little thing like being dead stop him
Refreshing to see someone covering the extensive, beautiful discography of this incredible band!
WYSIWYG is one of my fav records of all time. It's like the Y2K version of We're Only In It For The Money by the Mothers of Invention.
"in total, anarchy is great!" Mic the snare based
Thanks for doing this and educating the masses on the best anarchist dance music collective ever! That said, there’s a deeper and more sinister catalyst behind “on EBay” from the “Un” album that deserved a mention.
Ooh! Do tell. I love that song.
Yay, Arcade Fire in the DDDDescision!
Don't want to throw too much on, but I'd also really love to see a deep dive on Florence and the Machine
Given that most of us only know them for Tubthumping... Yeah I think you've given me the interest to take a listen
Genuinely made up to find a Chumbawamba deep dive video, let alone one as good as this is!
This video made me check out Pictures of Starving Children. Holy fuck what a record. Seriously did not expect it to be that good. 10/10 for me.
If you liked that one, try Anarchy and Readymades if you haven't already. Anarchy is my favorite album.
PLEASE COVER THESE ARTISTS:
-TOOL
-THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
-WEEN
I really hope Mike does another DDD on a “one-hit wonder” band like The Cardigans, Midnight Oil, the Divynls, maybe even Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
Thank you for the disclaimer, i wont kill you now
You're absolutely right, Midnight Oil is a fantastic band with a surprisingly awesome discog, i'd love to see a DDD on them
Mumia abu-jamal was not released from prison in 2001 his death sentence was overturned but he still is serving life in prison
OMG this is the most excited I’ve been clicking a video in weeks. What a bold fucking move
look, all i'm saying is that chumbawamba via tubthumper was my first exposure to anarchism as an ideology, and now i'm a socialist, so maybe they were right?
I mean, that's based.
I see you watched Todd in the shadows one hit wonderland, amazing video Mic.
This is a wild ride. I really thought this video was going to be a joke, never could I think that Chumbawamba has such a rich and badass history.
Is hilarious that they weren't even looking into being a band at the beginning, but they got a gig and decided to start playing instruments
I recently discovered Chumbawamba a couple years back when I found Tubthumper at a thrift store. It quickly (and unexpectedly) became one of my favourite albums ever. Since then I've been slowly listening to the rest of their discography. Glad to learn more about their history here 👍
i live in leeds and my dad is mates with boff, hes a great guy
One of the greatest bands of all-time, no joke.
The ending of Tubthumping is amazing
Snare.
You can add them being covered by the podcast Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff
I just watched Todd in the Shadows' video on this group. They seem really interesting! Good pick for a DDD.
That was a very interesting Deep Discography Dive video to watch.
Yes.
Been into this band since 1986, first saw them live during my second gig in 1986 with Conflict and City Indians so know a lot about them, impressed you included the I'm thick single, not well known
I’ve need this video forever
