Carving a Serving Spoon from a Maple Tree

- From Tree to Spoon! The kids have been really interested in wood carving, so I made a spoon with them to show them the process. I'm no spooncarver, and need to get or make some real spoon carving tools. But I'm still rather happy with how the spoon turned out.

This is so lovely! It is very generous of you that you let your kids watching and helping while you work. I remember my dad used to let me help when I was about 5 years old. He is a cabinetmaker. This is the greatest heritage my dad has given me. Cheers!

I must say that I am mostly impressed by your parenting! Your calm and patient way to involve your kids is just exemplary. It's really problematic that most children in the developed world never experience this with their parents or relatives. They only experience parents coming home from their office being tired and relaxing in front of a screen.
I am sooo grateful to have been raised in a family with parents raised on small farms and not scared of undertaking manual tasks with us kids involved as well. On of my fondest memories from childhood and adolescence is of the whole family involved in a humbe, simple task. Pity, that children of today don't get to learn and appreciate the value of manual work in the family. It's an aquired taste as so many good things in life,
Well thank you! Well said. Always room to do better, I can promise you. But the kids are happy, healthy, and smart. This is the best environment to raise them in I am convinced.

Your children are so absorbed in what you are doing, that is wonderful to see them learning through observation basic life skills. The way you include them in what you do is extraordinary these days where kids are stuck inside and attached to a computer. I loved to be in my grandpa's workshop since the day I could walk. By the age of ten, he was teaching me how to use hand tools and even built me a mini version of his cabinet makers bench. He was a furniture maker as was his father, his grandfather, and so on. By the age of 14, I had learned to use what few power tools he had. That was 50 years ago and woodworking has been a lifetime passion for me. I'll be 60 next month and to this day I can still conjure up the smell of his shop which was a blend of wood and cherry pipe tobacco. When I retire at 50, I bought a 10x16 foot shed and insulated it, and ran a subpanel out to it. I've always heated it with electric heaters, but I'm at the beginning of building a mini wood stove for the shop out of an expansion tank that came off my old furnace. The shop is small so this will be big enough. I need to get the rest of the steel for the door and plate on top to heat water for tea. Both you and your wife are blessed to have such well-behaved and interested in what you do.

Such a great environment to raise kids, so many people get lost in the busy race missing out on the simple parts of life that really bring a family together, I was raised on a farm, in the dirt and having fun the way God intended and I’m grateful for it. I’m also curious if a spoon like that cracks or twists as it dries?
Agreed! We are very blessed. No, as spoons are small enough cracks are rarely an issue in drying, and twisting isn’t either unless the grain is really weird.

Most of the videos on our channel were filmed and produced by a friend who is a professional videographer.
My children used to sit and watch me like that. I suppose its time for me to make them their own tools and let them have at it, to rekindle interest
I am definitely enjoying seeing my kids develop interests in hand tools and handiwork. It is of paramount importance that I get my shop more finished so it is more conducive to them being able to work on stuff.

We work with our kids like this whenever possible, I just wish I could have a home shop business to do it all week long!
No need to be a pro spoon carver, like you said just take off everything that doesn't look like a spoon, and an imperfect result still gets the job done.
I think the kids seeing us make things from scratch is of great value to them developmentally, for their creativity and self reliance.

Nice going buddy. You killed a whole tree just to make spoon. Next time, go to the dollar store and buy a wooden spoon for a dollar instead of killing trees.
Nice going, dude, you just made a lot of assumptions. 😂 You assumed we didn’t use the rest of the tree (we did, it wasn’t wasted), that dollar store spoons are from sustainably harvested wood,😂 and what else?
