The best video of TH-cam. Words don't do any justice to this towering master work, it's performance and especially it's location Basilica di San Marco, Venice. The use of space, echo, acoustics and etc.

Montiverdi, like the Gabrielli's before him, wrote specifically for Saint Mark's. Timing and phrasing all make space for the echo, so performances in any other environment can sound flat and staged. Surfaces, air density, choir and orchestral placement all factor in. This probably pretty accurately recreates how it originally sounded.

John Gardner conducted an equally glorious performance of Monteverdi's Vespro Della Beata Vergine, in the chapelle at the Palace of Versailles. th-cam.com/video/S99FCAFNgaA/w-d-xo.html

utterly agree with such a bold statement as this. This is on the caliber of Karl Richter's Bach on the organ in Ottobeuren and his portrayal of The St. John Mass which is also on video here, if not even higher.

At age 63, I still consider this the single most important piece of music in my life since I discovered it at age 25 whilst living in Berlin (the walled-in desperate city) in the early 1980's. This music, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, was composed by Claudio Monteverdi in the months after the death of his wife while he himself suffered great physical pain (a plague of boils according to the contemporary sources?), and one must suspect that the overwhelming emotionality and depth of the music plumbs the composer's profound sense of loss, his sense of physical degeneration and general mortality, and his encounter with the archtypal Heavenly Mother. And all the while a subtle erotic pulse runs through the music, often made explicit by the biblical text. Das ewig' Webliche zieht uns hinan: the "eternally feminine" transforms and transports us. -- And indeed. The Vespers transport listeners to another universe, completely separate and distinct from the one we believe we exist on the day of our listening. In this separate and distinct musical realm, our normal "real" world is suspended. Monteverdi posits instead a world of philosophical truths: of love and death; of gain, possession, and inevitable loss; of contending darkness and light. All these things are in contention but somehow still contained within the Truth of the Word. In this music we have entered the buffeting extra-world of Job, of great struggle and then (one hopes) of ultimate resolution. All that said: still the reek of injustice and incomprehensibility remains--the world of Job! But we were good people! -- None of us can master it as mere human beings but perhaps as spiritual beings we can and will. -- Thank you to this wonderful choir and JEG and the Basilica of San Marco where this human and divine masterpiece must have received its first early performance in much the same circumstances as we hear the music and text here. In these dark times, you and I can only weep and hope that the music is correct in its emotional assessment that hope will indeed obtain. Be well.

What a beautiful and informative comment. I can relate to all of it. I am 66 next month and I first discovered the work when I had the privilege to perform it with world class musicians (I was in the chorus) when I was about 23. It was performed at St Marks Cathedral in Seattle WA. I had only been in the city for a couple of years - from Phila PA - and the power of the work and the depth of the performance was life-changing. Since then, I've had the privilege of performing as tenor soloist/chorus in other performances, but none reaching the heights of that first experience (although that may be because I didn't have initial expectations at the time). Your back-story of Monteverdi's emotional and physical state when composing the work was moving. Don't think I realized some of it. When I was in Venice in 1983 (on a concert tour), my highest priority was to see Monteverdi's final resting place and doing that was very powerful for me. He will always be at the top of my list of greatest composers - and artists in general - in history.

      I'm also 63.
I first heard this particular recording in 1975 when I was about 17 and it was the first time that I heard the vespers. I had a truly profound emotional/spiritual/religious experience and was covered in goosebumps and actually cried during my first listening.
I am now an atheist but for cultural, emotional and many life affirming reasons I recognize the importance of this kind of music.
The intention of those who lived hundreds of years ago in a predominantly religious and regio-centric world was to present an offering to God and seek God's approval.
      We don't do that now.
Gardiner's interpretation still has a profound affect on me after more than 45 years.
      Love this!!!!!
It's beautiful, life affirming and is awe inspiring!

I am 71, Hungarian, living in Budapest. I first came across this fantastic piece of music when I was 21, 50 years ago now. An American university choir came to Budapest and I was their interpreter. I made friends with one of them who, upon returning to the States, sent me a few LPs, among those that the Vespers, and I am eternally grateful for that. An absolute all time favorite!

I remember the first time I heard this piece. I was working in the classical section at Tower Records in New York City and one of the staff there put it on the sound system. Before putting the disc in he said, “Listen to this!” The echo alone blew me away. He then told me that it was recorded in St.Mark’s in Venice, supposedly the place it was written for, using period instruments. That was some time between 1990 and 1994 and I got the 2-disc set then and there.

Danke!

In my beloved Kingdom of the Netherlands the Mattheus Passion by JS Bach is the biggest musical event. And that is very good, because it is great music and I love it deeply. Having said this, as a Dutch roman-catholic I would like to add that my biggest musical event is to listen to the Vespro della Beata Vergine by Claudio Monteverdi on the first day of january, the holy day of the Mother of God under the solemnity of the birth of Jesus Christ. Thank you kindly for posting this beautiful gracious uplifting and happymaking music on TH-cam.

Of course the Monteverdi Vespers have always been one of the pinnacles of Western Culture.
But Gardiner's recording did a lot to pull this masterwork within the consciousness of modern audiences. For that feat alone, Gardiner and his forces deserve a place in the history books. Never mind all the great music he made thereafter.
Now, decades later quite a lot of fine performances have seen the light.
But this performance still boggles the mind and uplifts the soul. It deserves to stand as one of the milestones of classical recording.

I'm sorry if I made some errors, but I'm Italian and I don't know if some words are correct :) and no, even if I am Italian, I can't understand what they are saying, for the most part 🤣

Masterful, in both the vocal and video production. Monteverdi would be immensely pleased with the untouchable excellence John Eliot Gardiners' Monteverdi Singers, et al, bring to this awe-inspiring rendition of this towering masterwork. Yes, I do agree that is possible the finest choral/orchestral work on You Tube. Recorded 27 years ago, it sets a standard for presentation and performance.

I also read the opinions of other music lovers!
But I would say that, in my opinion, in this case, an exceptional conductor met: Sir Eliot Gardiner, with The Monteverdi Choir The English Baroque Soloists The London Oratory Juniors Choir, with the Basilica di San Marco, Venice, with soloists Exorcists like Ann Monoyios - Soprano Marinella Pennicchi Michael Chance - Counter Tenor Nigel Robson - Tenor Mark Tucker - Tenor Sandro Naglia - Tenor Bryn Terfel - Bass Alastair Miles - Bass
, then with Monteverdi himself, all the factors of exceptional specialty! How does not it sound good, divine?

it may be 40 years ago already I saw a play in Amsterdam called Lucifer's Tragedy. In it at several stages there is a message from God brought by an archangel to Lucifer for with the heaven sorts of opens, then they played the first part of Vespro della Beata Vergine. Since then it is sound of heaven for me

I think their expressions indicate they have totally transcended the idea of ego, serving a higher power. The demands on the intellect and spirit in order to perform a piece so perfectly are tremendous. They have gone ‘beyond the beyond.”

Can you imagine that the Huns & the Vandals had laid waste to so much . . . and Rome picking up the pieces . . . with a port protected from the storms . . . and survivors protected from e-coli . . . and Vivaldi and Monteverdi reminding stone temple pilots (listeners) of 'why' (of everything).
