Great video Joe. I was doing the same today, snowplowing and snow blowing. I'm North of you, we got about a foot on the ground now. Few weeks ago, we were buried, had over 4 feet. Be careful out there delivering this week. Looks like we will get some, out of this storm. But the folks down south are getting hit real bad this time. Take Care
Thanks for making me jump up to see who was on my porch at eleven o clock at night. I sure felt like a real moron when I realized the wind chimes I was hearing was on the video. Have a wonderful day.
It's so funny you mention fear of running out of wood, even though you have an abundance - of course people who burn wood go through the same anxiety - I go out to my wood pile and it never seems to be enough, even though there is plenty of excess!
Looks like a winter wonderland. Elaine from Canada here, I like the quietness after a snowfall ( guess it helps if there’s no machinery fired up) makes me want to stop and appreciate the silence. But nothing’s going to keep you idle for long. Enjoy the hot showers and congrats on a superb sales month. Cheers.
I used to live in a 4000 sq ft house,I sold it along with all it's stairs and I now live in 1400 sq ft that I can step into from the ground level. Southern Ohio, that snow storm is inbound tonight, I might have to actually plow snow for the first time in many years.
Joe looks to be pretty chilly there in your location. The cold air is moving in down here today and we have a chance for snow later in the week. I'm looking forward to it if it happens, just sit at home and sell firewood. Take care and stay warm.
hi there you were lucky the last 2 years , running a snow blower some times is like spitting into the wind , winter will be over before you know it , stay warm , best to all , john
Thanks for the video Joe,wish we had more those winters in south east but we're getting some cold this year, thanks for video,I'm checking out a.m. Leonard ,appreciate everything
Great video Joe. My boiler circulation water pump doesn’t stop. If my house is holding any temp it keeps water from freezing. Plus when growing up in a single wide trailer freezing pipes were a huge issue. Growing up we always kept water moving at sinks with a strong drip. Water circulation a friend to pipes not freezing. I use a mixing valve in house kids. Big snow late today, maybe ice yikes.
Very true...my Hardy only runs the pump when the house calls for heat. The glycol is a good idea but the Hardy's domestic hot water loop is at risk of developing a leak and letting poison in. They rec to use food grade glycol
My Oldest brother told me one time "its next to impossible to find a small house in a nice area" On the propane deal, if you ever have to switch, buy a 1000 gallon tank and fill it in the summer when propane is cheapest, plus discounts for larger quantities, over 500 gallons, right now here in Oklahoma its $2.29 a gallon, just went up friday from $2.19 Stay warm my friend!
You are probably wishing you left a day early by now. Some nasty driving in this one but I am in Missouri and won't leave the house until roads are dry. I hate getting stuck on the road for hours as they clear a multi car pile up. Done it too often in the past to want to sit with the tank going down for hours. Sat in one back up for six hours and only moved a mile back in the eighties. I am too old for that now.
If I take vacation in winter, my circluation pump runs continuously, and the lp furnace keeps water in the boiler at about 80 deg. Just need to turn off boiler draft.
Very interesting furnace, I have a similar setup except it’s an indoor boiler inside my garage which feeds hot water to my house, I love it, no mess in the house.
@@ohiowoodburner My second wife's father had one in a walk out basement and it was not too bad. Pretty close to the patio door and concrete floors for easy sweeping. It was a lot smaller one though as it was that one story ranch three bedroom two bath zero paint home you talked about. All brick with vinyl siding gables plus facia and soffit. And if he went on vacation it just cost more propane since the boiler and lines were in a heated space and could go out without issue. He did build that house so he put 9 foot ceilings in the basement so he had lots of clearance above the firebox.
We got 2" of sleet at my place today. Forecast all this week is to not get above 28 (F) all week. Ground should finally freeze in my woodyard,,, but covered in ice is not much better than mud!

I heard there was 10" Saturday morning over near Hinckley, also that Lake Erie might freeze which might cut down on the lake effect snow. 30's and 40's here in sunny Colorado with lots of snow in the mountains but not much down on the front range. Don't work too hard!
Man Joe, I don't know if you are reading my mind or if I'm am reading your's but I was thinking of asking you multiple questions in the last few weeks that you answered in this video. Specifically about if you would ever downsize once the girls move along at some point; not that I knew if you had a large home, but figured it wasn't too small either. It is a thought with where costs are going these days, especially if you actually saved money doing so. Money that could go into the business perhaps, too. Lastly, a good trick I have used for a few years regarding snow. Maybe you do this already, but if if you want to clean off snow from your woodracks, piles of wood, and equipment in the Woodyard or at home, use a leaf blower. I just did it today on my little 8x4 rack. Snow gone in about 10 seconds. Also makes quick work on the porch, vehicle, trailer, etc. Fluffy, light snow is best but it still works well on that wet lake effect you would get more of. Just a thought to pass along.

Thanks Joe for sharing. Days like this reinforce how great it is having super mild winters here in Texas. I know that is really not a severe blizzard but I guess I'll stick with unbearably hot,dry summers over brutally cold winters. What a wuss, huh. LOL. And hey don't feel bad about taking some time for yourself. You deserve it
Not sure where in Texas but Ryan Hall Y'all had a video today saying most of Texas might have snow later this week especially around Dallas but the whole state could get some except the coast. Just sayin... Look into it and stock up in advance. Heck it looked like it might even get northern Mexico some. Of course a lot could change but worth watching out for. I remember a year south of Houston where my pipes froze solid and it was ten degrees plus a wind chill much colder. Salt water was freezing in Galveston bay along the shore.

Happy Snow Day. Snow drought here in SE Pa also. People had snowmobiles all over the place, not so much anymore. My wife (2nd) and I bought our current house in 2020 right before Covid shut everything down. It's 1200 sq. ft. living area with 1200 sq. ft. walkout basement. It's too small but it's paid for. Everything has its pros and cons. Upstairs heats easily with a woodstove while the basement is cool. Enjoy your snow day!
Really enjoy your channel, Joe! This next round of snow could be significant in southern & central OH. Some good news. I predict our Brownies are not going to lose another game this season. 😊
I hear ya on buying a big house. In my area of WI 2022 mold damaged 2 bedroom houses were going for $300,000.00 to $400,000.00 I bought a house from a auction guild. Put a lot of money in my house too so far. 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 2 kitchens, just finishing the main level kitchen remodel. 2 dining rooms, 2 living rooms, big attached garage, in floor liquid radiant heat with boilers. House is worth a million dollars, paid $280,000.00 and have over $600,000.00 put into it so far. Iv been building houses since I was 11 years old and have been doing hazmat restoration and disaster recovery for the last 25 years. . I'm also a xactimate estimator and a Lead abatement supervisor for the state of Minnesota, Licensed by the state. I'm selling my house in 6 years unless my kids want it.
Our area doesn't have prices like that! Seems the boom and bust of real estate doesn't include the Mahoning Valley. Along the lake and near the cities the prices are super high
Hey Joe those wood boilers are the cat’s pyjamas especially being in the firewood business. You can recycle a lot of the non sellable firewood for your own heat but yes you are right, it involves lots of work as well. ✌️
Did I hear you say March was your biggest month? Until Oct and Dec surpassed that? Fascinating! Must be attributed to the new woodyard and inventory. Or is it commercial sales? I track my firewood sales too and enjoy comparing year over year. My slowest month by over factor of 10 for three years is March, followed by February and then April. Bundle wood sales kick in around May. Highest sales (gross and volume) is October followed by November in second place. Interesting. I’m about a 4 hour drive north east of you and sell mostly small quantities to residential customers and bundles from a couple roadside stands. Are restaurants the answer to improving sales in early spring? Admittedly dry inventory is a problem for me in Feb and March but I also find not that much demand at that time.
Seems it is due to the entire portfolio of customers. Retaurants def play a nice role as their consumption is predictable. Early spring is always the slowest time for residential but for some reason I had a spike. Could have been the weather too.
Joe, you may remember me from a comment in a previous video when you were turning your grates over. I'm in Missouri, met you at Paul Bunyan in Oct. My Hardy was installed in 2009, and I have never turned my grates over nor replaced them. I just saw where you put wood in after cleaning out the ash box, and I saw the grates completely cleaned off in the front part of your firebox. I never remove coals or ashes from the firebox, only the ash box at the bottom. Could it be that the bed of coals/ashes that I always have in the firebox protects the grates somehow? The air comes up through those well enough to get the fire going again, although not instantly. I keep saying this is the last year I'm doing this, and I'm saying it again this year. But when I consider the cost to heat with propane for an entire winter, I have always changed my mind in time to start cutting and splitting wood for the next season. At 73, I know it is going to happen one of these days.
That is awesome you are still running the Hardy at 73 Ron!!! I really think my issues have been bc I keep my ash level too high. I have been keeping the ash much lower this season and I haven't seen any bowing of the grates. I will give an end of year update when we are done buring for the season. We usually run from Halloween to Easter
Number of reasons. 2wd are cheaper to purchase, maintain, and operate. I get over 20 mpg with both. My customer base is not dependent on firewood so I can choose when I deliver by avoiding bad weather. Restaurants are more demanding but they do a good job keeping their lots clear. For me the idea of "going smaller" with everything I do with firewood delivery has made me more lean and profitable. I still have my personal 4x4 that I will use in a pinch but largely my 2wd fleet has been a home run for us.
I have a hand held but it is at my yard. This snow was odd. The top was super fluffy but the stuff on the drive was heavy and wet. The snowblower didn't much care for this run. Thanks Ron
Hi Joe - it’s Big Rodders in Ireland. I thought of you immediately today when the particularly cold spell presently hitting the US of A was on the national news over here.
What happens if you have a power outage and your wood burner is heating? Are you concerned about the liquid in your heating pipes, or do you have glycol in them?
If power goes out I have a solar backup system that keeps my house running but if the furnace is up to temp the lines won't freeze even if it sets for a day. I could go out and open the doors manually to bring the temp back up as well. You can put glycol in but it should be food grade in case the domestic hot water loop gets a leak...wouldn't want that poison getting into your domestic water!
Taylor wood furnace is most inefficient stove made my hardy has a twelve hour burn time and it has a fire baffle in it it's the h4 wouldn't go back to propane
There is some truth to that. There is no law that says you can't make firewood during bad weather but it is something I have declared as my own personal police Brendan
Joe, your timing is not great. Now that your yard is not at home, you could downsize homes but with mortgages up it is harder to sell and harder to buy at these rates. But I get it. A ranch would be nice and a small one at that with great insulation and you could save a lot of money and get some freedom. Why you could even snowbird south ahead of the weather if you wanted. Of course if you have enough equity in the home that you could buy cash you are ahead of the game. Something tells me you are that smart. You do realize that a profitable business that is ten years old is prime to sell and retire right? Would be great if you could coordinate some of that to a simpler life with empty nest time coming. Just do not get suckered into buying a home in Florida like so many did. Now they cannot afford the taxes and insurance and are moving back to be near the kids. That one is a suckers bet. If you could pull it off, we might cross paths on the beach in Florida some February. Love that warm weather, just not living there year round. Lots of northern state license plates in the parking lots down there. And lots of farmers who hate snow too. AirBNB is their friend.
Don't blame you but get ansy and have to do something you talking outside boilers the tree company owner has a boiler and uses it to heat his log cabin but they use like two foot pieces of wood don't cost him anything but time cause when processor is down at the farm they get him enough wood to burn if running short get some out of pile split up for customers i wish i burned wood would be free to me but not interested anymore had heart surgery and lung stuff going on and on blood thinners just have to watch out for myself and wife and the kids living with us all have problems so stay with us and it all works out don't have to worry about them cause we own everything we have
Why would you ever consider a 2wd truck in your area let alone for a delivery truck ? Thats very odd to me. My question comes from my firewood business in upstate NY . Ill never understand the 2wd thing .....

Nice post Bumbles! I want to put a stealth camper in the back of a moving van but I have to convince the wife about that first!
@@ohiowoodburner Make it "stealthy" enough and she won't need to know about it. 🤣
So happy sales are doing well for you Joe!
Thanks Zeekster!
Really enjoy your channel, Joe! This next round of snow could be significant in southern & central OH. Some good news. I predict our Brownies are not going to lose another game this season. 😊
Browns are just disappointing. They are so bad it's to the point they are no longer relevant. Ugh.
Perhaps you'll finally get a chance to use the snoblower on your tractor at the primary woodyard. Happy New Year and continued success in 2025.
haha I keep waiting for that day. I was just there today and there is about 3" on the ground. Not that much at all
Nicely done. you did a good job. Don't give up.
Thanks Bob. Pedal to the metal buddy
Get another BIG GARAGE. Keep things (splitters, chippers, saws, etc) indoors where you can work
that would be awesome Joey. With three phase electric to power my machines!
The hardy boiler was the cheapest but it has lasted you almost 20 years.👏👏
No doubt it has been a great purchase for us. Maybe the best ever
Hey Joe those wood boilers are the cat’s pyjamas especially being in the firewood business. You can recycle a lot of the non sellable firewood for your own heat but yes you are right, it involves lots of work as well. ✌️
I love the Hardy. It has been a big part of our lives!
Love the classics….another Hardy tour with Joe. Good luck with your business in 2025.
thanks Roger!
A Whole New Meaning to 'Frosted Tips'.......
haha Thanks for watching buddy
Joe,another excellent video 👍nothing wrong with a little bit of rest from your wood yard 😮😊❤
Thanks Todd!! Stay warm buddy
How thick was the dust on the snowblower?
Totally agree with the ranch style house one level
Yes. Stairs are nothing but trouble. Thanks Danny
Getting ready for our first snow dump here n PA, Joe!🥶
Get ready! The radar doesn't look good
Did I hear you say March was your biggest month?
You live in the lake effect area, sell firewood, and have 2wd trucks..
That is correct. I don't have any customers who depend of firewood as primary heat source so if the roads are bad I sched around it
60 days or so it will be Ramp season again....snow will be forgotten
I will be at the Ramps & Rails Festival in Elkins West Virginia
Snowing here in Nc today .
I heard the storm is going your way. Be ready Jason!
fun, Fun, FUN,
_Till daddy takes the T-Bird away_ (that & "Lil Deuce Coup" & "409")
..... yeah, _SURE_ "Beach Boys" Music. Why *NOT?* 🤣😂
That's what *I would be thinking / singing, whilst shoveling* ---- stay Warm Joe,
haha Mind control can keep you warm!
Could you put glycol in the water so it wouldn't freeze?
Good dad !!
Thanks Farmer Brown
If you could figure out how to sell firewood in Florida, you'd be golden 🤠👍
I actually visited a company when I was in FLa a few years ago. Here it is
th-cam.com/video/PXkw7Kd5bio/w-d-xo.html
cherry vally that lady was great but that boiler was too small i got the 7260 1 million btu and u dont have to lift logs just rol them in
Joe, you may remember me from a comment in a previous video when you were turning your grates over.
I couldn’t imagine living somewhere and operating a delivery business where is snows and ices without 4 wheel drive
Get a backpack leaf blower. I used mine in this fluff. We got 6” in so pymatuning.
Re: taking vacations: could you not keep the water pump running and maybe keep the forced-air fan in the house on low to heat the water a tiny bit?
That would work but I would be a nervous nellie the whole time I would be away.
winter in the north
As long as Lake Erie is unfrozen we are vulnerable to big snow!
If your wood burner breaks down or you get rid of it, what are your plans for the uglies and off-cuts? Do you have a market in mind for them?
I haven't a clue about that. I would prob find a way to sell them. I have learned it is easy to sell firewood!
If you moved a wood yard you can move a household. You’re quickly becoming an empty nester which will make it easier.
haha. I would think so but that would be a HUGE undertaking Harold!!!
I’m curious do guys burn pine in outdoor burners ?
Sure. If I ever get any. Doesn't matter what it is. It is going in
Id give you nice logs if you were closer
Taylor wood furnace is most inefficient stove made my hardy has a twelve hour burn time and it has a fire baffle in it it's the h4 wouldn't go back to propane
My buddy has the H4 and his has a baffle too. I wonder how much that provides in the real world anyway? Thanks Rich
It's like that old saying make hay while the sun shines I suppose the firewood business is the same
There is some truth to that. There is no law that says you can't make firewood during bad weather but it is something I have declared as my own personal police Brendan
I'm surprised that they sell 2 wheel drive trucks in Ohio.
Yep they are still out there.
Please be careful
Will do Phil
Hope the storm isn't too hard on you. At least yo might get a chance to use the snowblower you have in inventory 👍
I'm still waiting to run it lyle LOL. The big storm is supposed to miss us to the south but you never know!
can't the employee of the month catch a break and get an indoor parking spot?
I will have to drop that into the Employee Suggestion Box!
Don't blame you but get ansy and have to do something you talking outside boilers the tree company owner has a boiler and uses it to heat his log cabin but they use like two foot pieces of wood don't cost him anything but time cause when processor is down at the farm they get him enough wood to burn if running short get some out of pile split up for customers i wish i burned wood would be free to me but not interested anymore had heart surgery and lung stuff going on and on blood thinners just have to watch out for myself and wife and the kids living with us all have problems so stay with us and it all works out don't have to worry about them cause we own everything we have
prob being on blood thinners is not good to be around a woodshed. There are cuts and bumps at every corner Kevin! Stay warm buddy
Why would you ever consider a 2wd truck in your area let alone for a delivery truck ? Thats very odd to me. My question comes from my firewood business in upstate NY . Ill never understand the 2wd thing .....
Definitely good on you for knowing your needs. Keep it rubber side down and your traction be spot on !
