The B58 is one of the best engines ever made. Finally, BMW with some input from Toyota has reliability too. What's not to like? Here in the UK we can get the Touring version with loads of space but the same dynamics. It'll do everything. Wonderful cars.

95% of owners would do better with the 340i over the M3. Better ride for a daily driver and plenty fast. Unless you are a real hard charger, the 340 is a better choice for a daily than the M3.

    • @Polo08816

The problem is that most people could probably be better served by a mid or large size SUV when it comes to daily driving than a M340i. I think that’s why sales of the 3 Series have declined over the past 10 years.

I also don't find the ride to be that harsh tbh. also even with the MP front lip, it actually has higher clearance than my 540i with the MP style lip.

We still love wagons so much, that some very famous cars are now only released in that form, so basically you can pick up SUV or wagon. Which makes much more sense than choosing between SUV/crossover and sedan (hatchback). I consider this car as best all rounder in it's category with estate body and market confirms that. I have iDrive 8 in my BMW i4. It's mostly fine, but the thing I miss the most are physical radio preset buttons. I have them on my 2018 Audi S4 and it makes flipping between channels a breeze. The voice commands in the BMW work pretty okay, but way too laggy for satellite radio channel flipping. I don't mind the climate controls so much in iDrive 8 since I usually just set the fans in Auto. Moving the temperature on the screen works reasonably well, though still a far cry from the rotating temperature knobs on the Audi. Despite those quibbles, I might well buy an M340i xDrive when the S4 hits its use-by date.

Pretty good review champ. I have been considering one of these for a while to replace my 2020 M2 Competition. I usually get a new car every 4 years or so but I still love the M2 so I’m still under-sided. I’ve had 2 M3’s in the past and a Mercedes C-63 but the M2 in my view is the better drivers car, whilst being a little harsh on poor roads. I don’t like the look of the new M2 so that’s off the list and then of course is the current M3/4 front.

Still trying to wrap my head around how this is $9K more than the M240i (when you add 19s and adaptive suspension for an apples to apples). You get 2 more doors, some more legroom, a mild hybrid, and a couple more luxury options. That should be $4K max. Seems like the coupe is a much better deal if you can get away with it, and the sedan market is just higher priced.

Allow me to dispel the hype around the M light models somewhat. I had a 2022 G26 M440 GC XDrive and feel I can compare somewhat as I just received my G80 order. For one, the G80 steering feel is far superior. It isn't even close. Second, the manual option I opted for in my G80 makes it far more engaging/rewarding to drive quickly.
So, while the B58 is unreal in its power and delivery, there is a very palpable and real distinction from the true M cars... especially if you know how to drive and like getting after it on some quieter roads.

There is no doubt that the M340i is a fantastic car, but people who looking at them should cross shop with the Giula 2.0 AND a 1-2 year old Giulia Quadrifoglio. Both have a much better steering rack and chassis tuning. The 2.0 will provide more efficiency and in my opinion, more fun around town. It's not until you get to winding country roads that the M340i's more powerful B58 might be enough of an advantage to edge out the Giulia 2.0's better handling and driving feel. And even then, it's tough to use the 382hp in the M340i to fullest extent without losing your license.
If you want more performance, but don't want to spend M3 money and still want comfort for longer drives, the Giulia Quadrifoglio will check those boxes and then some. A 2 year old car with 2 years of warranty left will be about the same price or even cheaper than a fully loaded M340i. The Quadrifoglio competes with the M3, and even though it was released in 2017, it's still rated higher than the newer G80 in most serious reviews. But the amazing thing about the Quadrifoglio is in its Advanced or Natural settings, it rides softer than an M340i with M-Sport suspension, and will even be a bit softer than an M340i with Adaptive Suspension set to soft. But throw the QV in race mode, and it's more engaging than an M3.
Subjectively, either version of the Giulia looks much better than the M340i, and both are far more unique. You will get questions about your car every time you park or get gas. You will look back at it every time you park. They are just fantastic cars.
