My favs are _One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich_ which describes a single day in the life of a political prisoner in a gulag and _Cancer Ward_ which is a a semi-autobiographical novel about his experiences and the people he meets while receiving treatment in a cancer ward. The title sounds depressing but it's really not. He shows all the funny, touching and weird little quirks of the patients and doctors on his ward and their lives before their cancers and the trials faced by them and their doctors.

Reminds me of the theater plays the roman emperor Caligula gave. He was a notoriously bad artist, an the self-written poems he liked to recite must have been equally terrible, while going on for hours.
