- 전 CIA 출신 북한 전문가 수미 테리, '한국정부 대리' 혐의 기소
U.S. federal prosecutors have charged a former CIA analyst Sue Mi Terry, a pro-Korea scholar who's also an expert on North Korea, of working for the South Korean government in exchange for gifts.
It's seen as an unexpected event by pundits.
Kim Jung-sil explains.
Federal prosecutors in New York have charged Sue Mi Terry for failing to register under the U.S. federal Foreign Agents Registration Act, and for conspiring to violate it.
The U.S. government requires individuals acting as agents for foreign principals to register and publicly disclose their relationships and activities, so that it can evaluate them.
The New York prosecutors say Ms. Terry did not register "despite engaging in extensive activities for and at the direction of" the South Korean government.
According to the indictment released on Tuesday, she began operating as a foreign agent in June 2013 when she was first contacted by an intelligence officer posing as a diplomat for the South Korean mission to the UN.
It said she accepted designer handbags and expensive meals in exchange for information and lobbying over the next 10 years.
The indictment said she also received at least $37,000 in covert payments.
Ms. Terry's lawyer released a statement saying that the allegations were unfounded, and distorted "the work of a scholar and news analyst known for her independence and years of service to the United States."
Born in 1972, Ms. Terry moved to the U.S. when she was 12 years old.
After getting her Ph.D. in international relations, she worked at the CIA as well as the U.S. National Security Council.
Pundits say the indictment comes as a surprise as for the past decade, she was just working as a scholar in the academic field.
Analysts also say the indictment could potentially shrivel the development and research of pro-Korea scholars in the U.S., who are significantly lacking in influence and impact compared to pro-Japan scholars.
The South Korean National Intelligence Service released a brief comment on Wednesday saying it's "closely communicating with the U.S. intelligence agencies" referring to the indictment.

South? Not North? South is our ally. If it was Israel, they wouldn't say shit.
all she got was hand bags and $37k? cheap price to ruin your career and reputation
women are so easily bought
I think the same lol for 37k$ it's nothing
Never trust an Asian female with a white partner.
Now if they can find OTHER US Gov't people working for foreign governments and punish them.
what did she do that our american politicians don't already do with china?
Is China our ally?
Ridiculous. This is how the US lost its regional experts with language expertise across the globe. The money involved is nothing over the years of time.
Haha she was like "sue who"? "sue mi"? Lo😂😂😂😂
Racist sob 😮

I feel bad for her. When American gov evasdropped S Korea president recently, they did not even criticise it. I am not surprised she met NIS personells since she must meet S.Koreans since that is her job as a researcher and a journalist. Nobody tells what kind of information was delivered to S.Koreans by her, and I think that is the most important part. No media is covering it.
Its always about greed
@ginolorenzo9851 how is quiting CIA, work for other organozation about greed?
If so, your whole nation , those are job hopping are because of greed. Including u
Netanyahu is giving getting gifts ALL the time from THE US....no news.
Sue Me....
Should've spelled it sumi
This is tip of the iceberg
"Then SUE ME TERRY!"
Sue me lol
But aren't South Korea and the US allies? I could see the seriousness of this if she worked on behalf of North Korea or China.🤔
US doesn't like her promoting Korean reunification by force.
There are still things that a country should keep private. You never show your hand to another country, even an allie.
There's more spying done between allied countries. It's not what you're thinking of, that spying is about tarnishing your opponent. It's simply to be updated on what's going on behind the scenes to get better deals during negotiations and such.
Everyone's making it seem like there's some dark underlying meaning/intention behind it. LOL
@@LadyPayokada SK paid her to write articles to influence US politics. US dominates SK foreign policy, it doesn't like to be undermined by it's vassals.
US spys on allies all the time. there is no real trust between any countries
But our justices can accept RVs?
im confused are you saying this is ok?
@@tdaddy90 he's saying domestic judges (like Justice Thomas) can get bribed with no consequences.
She bumped against Pro-Japanese lobbies. Between Japan and South Korea, The U.S will always side with Japan.
I hope he was fired for this….there is a trust issue now.
Wait...... S. Korea is our Allie....just like how Russia used to be.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Do u think cia doesn't spy on its allies??
Every nation spies on each other. “Allies” are not friends.
Is that why NATO was formed? 😂😂
So she’s a spy then.
Sue me in north korean court
Her husband was also arrested after Ms. Terry was.
😂 I hear sue me terry without looking at the texts
Really? Then Sue Mi.
Compensation? or Ascension in the ranks? It's probably a little of both. And so are we.
terry : challenge accepted
Its in her name. Sue Mi. So, sue her.
"Sue Mi Terry" was born and raised in Seoul South Korea. And we expect her to be loyal to the US only? Her entire family, and families dynasty is South Korean in heritage.
Actually she was mostly raised in the U.S. She left Korea at 12.
Two can play the game!
😮😮😮 AVARICE N GREED?

Is she married to a US- D?
Serves this government right.
WTF is she paid so much for a US government job but I was born here and I'm not?
This country is a disgrace.
Cause you likely are not qualified for the job. How’s your Korean?
@nausea01 Your missing the point.

The ROK is one of the closest allies of the US and rightfully so. That said, the US takes foreign interference very seriously, incidents like this even between friendly nations can undermine trust between them. It’s reminiscent of the incident between the US and Germany a couple years back. It doesn’t permanently hurt relations between the countries but it does add unnecessary friction. In recent years the ROK, US, Japan, Philippines, and Australia have all become closer economically and defensively, it’s imperative that all nations involved stay on that course. It’s always nice to have friends, but having high quality friends that can have your back is even more important.
True but no one trusts the Biden administration so I don’t blame them plus the US planted a listening device in the South Korean president's office last year I’m sure that caused a lot of friction between the two nations even the European allies are not that happy with this administration
She is Korean, when she resigned from CIA, what's wrong she goes back to service her own country? Funny thing is Korea is US ally. Wtf. America need to stop acting like this.
@@sneakymovewell that’s the problem she was a US agent ,you can’t share secrets with a foreign country even if it is a ally nation once you leave your post .
They need to change the law in the US about hiring foreign born nationals into federal jobs
@John_Q_Classified if the law is tlnot in place, stop accusing someone that is innocent. It's on the US side. If u sign an employment agreement that doesn't state u cannot work for competitor , does it make it right for the employer to sue u for working for competitor after leaving the company?
@@John_Q_Classified the US shouldn’t be talking last year they planted a listening device in the South Korean president's office
One hung lo says she took way too much stuff.
😂
Well, just like me. Whos behind watching over me? I know some of people of government are against me. So i cant trust who you are too. You know how those good guy in cops movie go rogue? Yeah thats how i feel. It become personal and vengeful
This is why certain job positions should only be for real Americans
Look I don't usually comment, but whatever your intentions are, what you are insinuating is pure bigotry and prejudice. What do you mean by "real"? I am a proud citizen of the United States and I am also of Asian descent. Does that make me not a "real" American? Rethink your values.

wtf
We own S. Korea... So whats the problem?
She acted as an agent of South Korea while being in a position of influence in the U.S. government. It does NOT matter if the country she is acting as an agent for is an allied nation.
I think the South Korean government wants to know what’s going on with the US right now. They are probably worried since they’ve been extremely unstable for the last four years just recently Joe Biden made a remark about Japan that didn’t make the Japanese population thrill about his statement unfortunately none of the US allies don’t trust the Biden administration currently including Europe too unless you’ve been living underneath a rock the last four years unfortunately the US is not the same anymore.
we don’t have any worthy leaders back then you couldn’t even be president of the US. If you didn’t serve in the military now we have a bunch of spoiled brats running the country. That’s why we’re in this mess in the US but I really hope it gets better since our great nations going straight to the gutter it’s a damn shame😢😢
No you don't. US is a joke.
no you guys don't.
no, we own you
