Coming back to this peaceful song, with all countries united, spreading a message of hope in a very hard context, after the disgrace that was the edition of 2024.
This one was hosted by Netherlands. The irony.
I almost feel guilty that I look back on 2020, a time of such heartbreak for many, with something approaching affection. I wouldn't want to return to those times, but the fact that we were able to stay together, when forced to be apart, really did bring out the best of humanity.

Drom Assault but nearly all the winning songs are normally sung in English anyway regardless of which country they’re representing. I can only think of a couple from the last 20 years, Serbia 2007 and Portugal 2017, that weren’t in English.

@@yuditgb5364 Yes I was aware of the absence of Belgium's Hooverphonic. But didn't want to spoil the joyous occasion since all the rest pitched in. I am sure Hooverphonics have their own reasons. But think of it. With their alternative, electronica, electropop, rock thing, they could have provided a needed variety in their segment of this wonderful song. Take the Mamas input as a trio. It was wonderful and I loved their melody in this song the best. Hooverphonic could have done a very similar memorable input. But again they are free to take whatever position suits them.
Now I have adjusted the listing by saying "All contestants except Belgium's Hooverphonic". Sad, but accurate...
All contestants that still deserve to be there is another option.

This was broadcast in the darkest days of Covid. Gave everyone a bit of hope.
Above all it is the Holy Spirit behind, within and from the song that gives hope.
This song was originally created for the anniversary of The Samaritans (the original - British - suicide helpline, devised and developed by the Reverend Chad Varah, who felt moved to act when the first funeral he ever officiated at was of a 14-year-old girl frightened into suicide by her first period)
2 years on and this is still one of my favourite Eurovision moments. A song that is truly needed now more than ever.

I think this is lovely. I think Hooverphonic should feel rather ashamed of themselves for not taking part just because they didn't really like the song. This is hardly the kind of thing The Roop, Uno and Go_A would normally sing, but they took part because they understood that it was just a nice video to bring hope and pleasure to people. I think it's really sad that Hooverphonic decided not to participate.

@@Hetapeep41 You shouldn't feel ashamed, and nobody watching the show would have a negative view of the whole country of Belgium, but that one Belgian group made a bad decision. I'll be honest, I live in the United Kingdom, so I would be expected to love the song 'Love Shine A Light'. I don't love it, but it's not the worst song we have sent to appear the final (which is why we lose every year!) but it was a lovely message to the world and the lyrics fit well in our current virus situation. I really think they made a bad decision and a lot of people have been disappointed in the group as a result. It will be interesting to see how the audience reacts to their performance in 2021 since they are confirmed to be taking part in the contest next year.
I was literally in tears a few times during the show. It was so beautiful and heart warming because just of seeing that everyone was getting struck by the virus and that we are in this together. The whole moment where they still kept the positivity and happiness was so emotional to me. So many mixed feels of saddens because of all losses this year and happines because there is hope and that spark of light that feels warm. Hope you all are safe and calm! Love you! 🙏💕

I just wanna say, as a Belgian boy, that I find it very disappointing that Hooverphonic didn't participate in this wonderful song... It's amazing to see all these countries unite in one big powerhouse and I feel ashamed Belgium isn't part of this. But do remember that this was the choice of the singer-songwriter, not the Belgian folks, and believe me when I say that most Belgium people do shine a light for all of you people out there

Exactly. Alex Callier said "this was a shitty song". He forgot that he was representing Belgium with Hooverphonic and that this was a whole lot more important than his own music preferences. It wouldn't have cost a thing to let Luka sing this song and participate to this, but his ego was too big. If he's ashamed of Eurovision, he should not participate next year.
I experienced more kindness from strangers in Belgium than I have anywhere else in the world. It's a shame your artist didn't take part in this but it's a reflection of that individual, not the nation. See you in 2021!

I think the refusal of Hooverphonics to participate in this wonderful unifying song disqualifies them to be Belgium’s participant next year. Shameful to bring this attitude when you represent your country. Belgium, the home of the European Union, should select a better participation next year.

I hope Eurovision 2021 will open up in grand style with "Love Shine a Light" featuring Katrina Leskanich, other singers, flag bearers and a full symphony orchestra. It will sort of pick things up where we left it with "Europe Shine a Light 2020" and will be a memorable moment bringing Europe & Eurovision back together and symbolizing its return from these unsettling times.
This not only makes me proud to be British, it makes me proud to be EUROPEAN.

However, the song won for the UK in '97, and it existed even before that ... for a very special purpose (to celebrate the anniversary of the world's first suicide-prevention helpline - The Samaritans in the UK). I thought the representatives for each country did a fantastic job tonight. I can't imagine how disappointed they all must have been. Really supportive messages and this beautiful collaboration to bring Europe together. I hope a lot get to come back to Eurovision in 2021.

This song marked the last time the UK won Eurovision (1997), and it's been the best song they ever entered, IMO. One of the best winners of all time, in fact.
It's probably no coincidence that the song was NOT written for Eurovision using some formula, focus group or jury, but for the 30th anniversary of a branch of The Samaritans (charity that helps depressed, suicidal and people in mental crisis), hence the positive, upbeat lyrics and tune and the naturalness of the emotion it evokes. It was only entered for Eurovision at the last minute when it was realised what a great song it is.

This should be an anthem for the WHO. When this song won, I was doing a virology placement in Germany and was at a Eurovision party with 7 nationalities. The rest of tonights program kept showing my old office when I worked on SARS in Rotterdam. Most of my old life was spent working on projects with WHO. Some national leaders have attacked WHO but their work is getting nations to collaborate on situations like this (or to prevents them from happening). What's to attack? Listen to the song.
I think that the reasons people attack the WHO is because of diplomatic nonsense, not the amazing work that all of you are doing for the world.
