Replaced filters in my turtle tank last night, woke up this morning to the turtle swimming around in 4inches of water at the bottom of the tank. 40gallons is somwhere under my basement flooring because of this damn o-ring. Im now ripping up the entire floor to let it dry out. Replace this seal ANNUALLY PEOPLE!!!
I tried multiple quick fixes including this one and none of it worked. I just tried putting some white automotive thread tape in the grove where the O-ring goes and it worked perfect and no mess !! It just fills in the grove enough to push the O-ring against the canister a little bit and seals perfect. Absolutely no leaks !! Permanent fix for me.
XCLSIV as I was watching this video I thought to use the plumbers thread tape. I have the one used for gas so it's a bit thicker but might be a good thing as I haven't tried it out yet.
This works with the tape. I have to redo mine occassionally but I have the og seal on still. I'm glad it works. Use this method if you have the tape and you're in a pinch.
While I don't doubt Vaseline will do a temporary job in some circumstances Fluval warn that it will eventually perish the seal because its petroleum based, whereas a silicone based version of the same thing (as used by plumbers) won't have the same effect. Of course Fluval have a super expensive product, and it maybe that theyre just trying to flog it, however I do trust that plumbers probably know what they're doing and they don't tend to use Vaseline - except when needs must of course. I really like the PTFE ideas in the comments below, not least because its totally inert and can't possibly affect the water. Thanks for the video - definitely worth a try in an emergency . . . the above is just with a longer term view and how expensive the replacements are, though I've had good luck with non-authorised parts from eBay at a much cheaper price for a pair of seals. Good to have a back up!
The PTFE from the comment @luisvalentim99 below did the job! It takes some patience and technique. Spiral wrap the oring or whatever seal it comes with evenly twice and wallah!

I've just tried to start my Fluval 305 after a few years, the lid doesn't SIT properly & water comes our of the gap, is that just due to the rubber ring? Best solution is to put some Teflon tape (plumbers tape ,ptfe ) over the seal just wrap around twice and keep bucket lip and Teflon well wet before put motor head and job done no more leaks .Just try it.
Agreed. My 205 was leaking and my husband fixed by lining the canister top with a thin strip of duct tape. This week I tried to fix it properly by replacing the seal ring... that didn't work. Back to the tape.
LoL it is 2020 and I have had exact the problem ,the washer ring looks ok but it is leaking exactly right where you showed as well as my Fluval 207 (5 years old cannister filter tank :) )... I think I will try your but I am getting the Aquaclear ....maybe time to change :)
Thanks for the emergency fix! Have a new kit coming from Amazon tomorrow but could not run the filter. When the new part arrives I will clean all the Vaseline out to prevent long term erosion. But for now the problem of leaking and air sucking is fixed!
Actually Jenene, you should as advised by HAGEN-(Fluval) lubricate rubber band with VASELINE periodically every cleaning, as it'll keep it supple and prevent from drying out.

If it can help, i solved my leak with 3 elastic in the grove where the O-ring and after I put the o-ring with vaseline! Like this, the o-ring have less place and is more comprimed. Only vaseline din't worked for me... Hope it will help!
They do leak after awhile I believe it is the design with the top of the canister, after awhile the top part of the canister where the o-ring seals itself distorts a bit creating a leak, so many times the O-ring is fine, by replacing the already good O-ring with a new one creates a new seal at first but does not last long, I am surprised they have not fixed the issue for such an expensive filter,I had the unit for 7 years no problems , in the last 2 years almost every time I service it I gets the leaks, and I replace the o-ring the is relatively new, now I use the Eheim classic , takes a little longer to clean, 5 minutes ..LOL but do not have to worry & deal with the leaks, besides the possible leak that many seem to have ,it is a good filter but having a solid leak proof filter is in the forefront of anything else
Hi Simon. I had same problem but now the filter stands in a Tupperware tray so any water goes into the tray and doesn’t ruin the cabinets, but you have to check on a regular basis that the spill tray isn’t filling up. 👍

Hi everyone. Please, don't ever use petroleum based grease or oil. It's gonna kill your fishs. Use vegetable oil. Nothing morer nothing less. Perfectly safe for fishs and plants.
306 leaking at the clamps,,, I noticed the clamps are loose after snaping them down. new seal, marine teflon grease, doesnt help. I believe the clamps just dont lock it down tight enough, either the clamp or the canister, something wore out. I used rubber strips where the clamps hook the canister to get a tighter fit.
Vaseline didn't work for me.. I had to put a rubber band under the 7 inch o ring.. worked perfect.. if still leaks after this.. there is a video where he uses a rubber band.. the band saved me 250$
my fluval 407 is leaking from the front area where the top motor part meets the bottom bucket part...I replaced the gasket with a brand new one and it still does it and the leak is real bad... I only had the filter since January of this year... What can I do?

I had this issue on a 206 and have fixed although the true culprit is not quite clear. At first I thought it was the seal so I checked and as with this video it seemed fine. I opted top pad out the groove with thread seal tape before replacing the o ring. as I was plugging the hosed back in o notice something odd. Water seamed to be seeping out of one side of the hose connector, The round bit on the side. water was pooling around the socket but not overflowing which leads me to believe it was taking another path through the head unit and out the side. I replaced the connector with another spare I had lying around and no water is leaking any more. Not sure whether the seal or the connector were the true cause of my unscheduled water change nut I suggest checking both.
Quick tip for quick fixes like this, if you thoroughly dry the unit and the cannsiter bin, if you lay dry kitchen roll under the filters bin, it's much easier to spot a minor leak.

Deepak S Hard to give an exact time. I used it until I could get a new seal so at least a couple of weeks and it was fine and hadn't leaked when I changed the seal. Trouble is the seals are expensive (UK) as you have to buy a kit. In the end I replaced the filter but this got me out of a jam. Hope this helps a bit.

The vaseline method didn't work on mine. The seal ring in mine was part of that kit you mention that I bought due to the impeller not working,. I changed the seal ring at that time too and that has only been installed for six months and it has failed. It is fine until power goes off when the siphoning action dumped 100l of water over my oak floor. I have ordered a new sealant ring in hope it fixes it.
Thanks for posting this, had a leaking fluval 205 due to old o ring drying out etc just as you explained, used your advice and tips to replace ring and vaseline etc to fix it--now working perfectly --thanks---One thing I also done was seal all threads on hoses etc using Plumbers PTFE tape to seal all threads--this PTFE tape costs pennies in DIY stores. This worked for but I used lubricating jello . I put a dish pan under the canister in case it starts leaking again. I also ordered a new seal . Cheaper than buying a new one . I also have a on back double penguin filter on back for backup.
I'm having the same issue, which I'm surprised by what seems to be a great filter in every other way, although I feel that the inner plastic part is too thin, and has no choice but to push out from a tight seal over time, I also have mine in a tote, thankfully as after the last clean, I see theres an inch of water in the bottom. I'm definitely going towards the teflon tape, as it is a thin layer, possibly just enough to resnug the seal. will try if I can find some now, but if not, will have to get. vaseline is not likely going to hold pressure from moving water, and fyi my seal is new, not cracked and still pliable so wish me luck!!!! anther thought was has anyone tried putting the seal on the lower half first? or is it not likely to line up to the track on the top ?
Good video, thanks for the guidance, it was a great help, I have found out one reason it will leak is the aqua stop valve, It mostly down to prussureation of the unit. If it can't pressurise then it will leak. Are the handles clipped in and tight? Wash the rubber in hot water first and try this, and the aqua valve is cheap on Amazon. I tried the rubber, not work. I greased it still leak. Replaced the valve so far it's working. I did buy a new fluval just in case.
was watching few videos how to repair seal and found my own solution. you need teflon tape for that. just vrap it around original rubber seal and this is it . cheap, fast, and safe for the fishes.
This is the worst product I ever buy for aquariums. I lost water through the closure head from the first day I bought it. I have already changed the board three times and it does not stop losing water. My aquarium was emptied completely twice. I will never buy Fluval products again. I prefer to sleep peacefully.
Alpha & Omega That is not good. I must admit, this small filter aside I've never had any issues with Fluval. I have just shut my FX6 down and gone sump only but never had any issues at all in all the time I used it. I'd certainly recommend an FX6.
I love how you said " I prefer to sleep peacefully." My tank is in my head board. 135 gallons to go bad all at once. I have a different brand canister filter and it was leaking so what does the GF do? Oh just turns it off a few days. I found my Pleco upside down in the tank tonight, fish at the top of the tank gasping for air. I guess that little but of circulation was the minimum it needs for the air pump. I went in to a panic and got more air pumps, then I was here fixing the seal, My Placo is on shaky ground right now. I will monitor him all night and if he is not moving every hour I will go down and swim him around the tank and over to the air stones. Who the Hell would think 1 small issue could do so much damage.
As I have said, many times over the years that this vid has been up. This may get you out of a jam if you find your filter leaking and have NOTHING ELSE TO USE!!
Good video! Had this happen to me last night with my tetratec 1200.. Was putting my daughters toys back, and noticed the laminate flooring was buckling on the joints near and around the unit. Found a fix that will hopefully fix the filter,but now i've got to replace that area of flooring before it goes mouldy. I'm guessing it had been leaking for a few days, if not a week. Sigh!
Flippin Fins Aquatics The fix didn't work in the end, and still leaked. Had to rehome my fish and shut the tank down, until I can afford a new pump. Sucks :-(
Oldenglishshifty sorry to hear that. I always keep an eye on eBay and if anything comes up as a bargain I snap it up and keep it for when things go bad. Hope you're up and running soon.
I had the same thing when cleaning my Fluval 205, woke up this morning to a third of the tank emptied onto my wooden flooring. Turns out the seal is not water tight once ive cleaned the filter and placed back together. Tried this and it has worked so far thanks.... fingers crossed until the new one arrives. Any fix for the wooden flooring would be appreciated ;).
I just bought the 107 Fluval canister filter and haven't put it to work yet. After reading a few comments here I might just return it and look into other filter types that are a safer option.

Vaseline degrades rubber, I learned that when I was an apprentice technician.

The Vaseline doesn't work for me only using plumbers tape helps...
Will try this today on my fluval 404. I stop it for 2 weeks now it's got a leak.
Wrap the seal with plumbers tape. Will last for years and years and cost $ 1.29

On my model, i left O'ring in situ and just wrapped PTFE around the whole thing. Worked a treat!

Plumbers grease works too. Makes it come apart and go together easily as well . I use it on all the o-rings.

FLUVAL makes garbage for lots of money. Should be gone from market. I have same two filters and same problems anytime i go cleaning.

anther thought was has anyone tried putting the seal on the lower half first? or is it not likely to line up to the track on the top ?

best trick is to freez your rubber in deep freezer the rubber swell out

I have already changed the board three times and it does not stop losing water. My aquarium was emptied completely twice. I will never buy Fluval products again. I prefer to sleep peacefully.
Alpha & Omega That is not good. I must admit, this small filter aside I've never had any issues with Fluval. I have just shut my FX6 down and gone sump only but never had any issues at all in all the time I used it. I'd certainly recommend an FX6.
I love how you said " I prefer to sleep peacefully." My tank is in my head board. 135 gallons to go bad all at once. I have a different brand canister filter and it was leaking so what does the GF do? Oh just turns it off a few days. I found my Pleco upside down in the tank tonight, fish at the top of the tank gasping for air. I guess that little but of circulation was the minimum it needs for the air pump. I went in to a panic and got more air pumps, then I was here fixing the seal, My Placo is on shaky ground right now. I will monitor him all night and if he is not moving every hour I will go down and swim him around the tank and over to the air stones. Who the Hell would think 1 small issue could do so much damage.
1 Hour later. He went for another swim. So far so good.
no you dont use Vaseline you use Aqua one silacone gasket lube
As I have said, many times over the years that this vid has been up. This may get you out of a jam if you find your filter leaking and have NOTHING ELSE TO USE!!

Good video! Had this happen to me last night with my tetratec 1200.. Was putting my daughters toys back, and noticed the laminate flooring was buckling on the joints near and around the unit. Found a fix that will hopefully fix the filter,but now i've got to replace that area of flooring before it goes mouldy. I'm guessing it had been leaking for a few days, if not a week. Sigh!
Always a bummer. After this video was made, the tank behind me cracked. It was not pretty.
Flippin Fins Aquatics The fix didn't work in the end, and still leaked. Had to rehome my fish and shut the tank down, until I can afford a new pump. Sucks :-(
Oldenglishshifty sorry to hear that. I always keep an eye on eBay and if anything comes up as a bargain I snap it up and keep it for when things go bad. Hope you're up and running soon.

I had the same thing when cleaning my Fluval 205, woke up this morning to a third of the tank emptied onto my wooden flooring. Turns out the seal is not water tight once ive cleaned the filter and placed back together. Tried this and it has worked so far thanks.... fingers crossed until the new one arrives. Any fix for the wooden flooring would be appreciated ;).
Sorry to hear that. I had a whole 200ltr tank go once so know your pain. Dehumidifiers could help with the dry out. Good luck..

I just bought the 107 Fluval canister filter and haven't put it to work yet. After reading a few comments here I might just return it and look into other filter types that are a safer option.
