Hey everyone, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2018 Honda CR-V, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver. Before we get into that though, let's just take a minute, we'll check this hitch out and make sure it's gonna be the right one for you. By putting a hitch on a CR-V, makes a lot of sense. You know, people use these vehicles to do a lot of different things, so if you're trying to move a trailer around, use an accessory like a bike rack or even a little bit of both, someone's gonna help you get that accomplished. There are quite a few hitches available for the CR-V and what kind of separates this one from some of the others, there's a couple of things really, first one being the appearance, you're gonna be able to see pretty much the whole entire trailer hitch, but in my opinion on the Honda, I don't think it looks out of place by any means as compared to some of the other ones which are a little more hidden.
You know, they sit up behind the bumper and you'll really just be able to see the receiver tube opening there. So if the appearance is, you know, one of your top concerns, might be worth looking into those. But one of the benefits you get from this being visible is you're not gonna have to trim your bumper or anything when you install the hitch and you're gonna get a little bit higher weight capacities than the more hidden type ones. So if you kind of plan on, you know, pushing everything to the limit a little bit or using really heavy accessories, this would probably be a better hitch for you. There are a couple of things worth noting with this particular hitch.
One of 'em being it's not going to be compatible with hybrid models, so if that's the type of CR-V that you got, you know, another hitch is gonna have to work for you. You know, like I said before, there's a lot of 'em out there, so feel free to check those out. And a lot of people ask too, if the hands-free lift gate assist feature is still gonna work once you put the hitch on. And with this one the answer is yes. Unfortunately today our model here of CR-V don't come equipped with it so I can't show you, but from past experience, you know, we've done a lot of these and they will still work.
You're just gonna have to kick your foot to either side of that receiver tube opening to get the sensor to pick it up and it might take you a minute to kind of find that sweet spot, but once you do, everything will open up like it should. The hitch is gonna have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which is a good thing, super common size. So a lot of stuff will work with it and it's going to use that standard five eights pin and clip. Keep in mind though, if you don't have one, not a huge deal, you can always get it here at etrailer and I say it because the hitch isn't gonna come included with a hitch pin. The safety chain openings are a loop style and should give you more than enough room to use just about any size hook that you might have.
When it comes to the weight capacities, the hitch is gonna have a 675 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating. So that's the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. Really good number. Pretty much any size bike rack or cargo carrier would work just fine to give you an example there. And for the maximum gross trailer weight rating, that's gonna be 4,500 pounds or the amount of weight pulling on the hitch. So that is the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have enter on it. And with all that in mind, I do always like to recommend never a bad idea to grab your Honda's owner's manual. That way you can check in there and make sure that your CR-V can handle that amount of weight safely. We'll grab a couple of measurements now and these will help us figure out what type of accessories will work best. To go from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be about 13 inches. So for those of you planning on pulling a trailer around, you could probably use a ball mount that has a rise in the shank. That two to four inch range would probably work well in most scenarios. And if you're using an accessory and let's say you have one already and it has a straight shank, you'd probably be fine. You know, with the amount of ground clearance here, if you're gonna buy a new one, I'd probably look for one that has a rise in the shank just to, you know, give you some more space, but up to you. And if you go from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, that's only gonna be ab
