- This is a detailed interior examination of the cab of Union Pacific's #8548, an EMD (Electro Motive Diesel) SD70ACe locomotive, one of 100 EM units built in 2007 with 4,300 hp.
Note how much of the cab is assembled with bolts, Phillips head screws and pop rivets for easy assembly or dis-assembly.
Here, I capture the cab of this unit with the explicit invitation of a UP engineer. Because I've promised to keep my cab crews secret, I'll simply say that this video occurred in the high granite over Donner Pass. The engineer invited me to stay for some car switching, but I ran out of time and drive space on the Flip HD for purposes of documentation. Though, of course, I enjoyed the cab ride for any number of movements.
Be courteous and kind to your engineers, conductors, MOW crews, and you'll find some future friends no matter how onerous UP may be.

The sound of an EMD 710 at idle never gets old, I could listen to that mechanical 2-stroke music for hours on end. Looks nice in here, not bad place to go about the business of railroading. Thanks for sharing the views.

If you love this so much why you wont apply for job at up. Then you can listen to it at 12 plus hours at a time with special addition of screaming radio, rattle of every loose metal panel and of course great smell of stinky toilet

The 710 does sound good, but I was used to the 567 which could put me to sleep.
I love the sound these electronic motive engines put out. especially from my favorite railroad company

This locomotive is simillar with my locomotive in indonesia, EMD GT38ACE, just different size

@keenan7434, I never recalled seeing a horn lever on the Conductors side of the cab in the engines I worked on, just the radio and emergency brake.

Some times they are dead-man switches to reset the alerter but that one is just a foot rest.
had a few people do this when we stopped near a group of them only one asked the rest just took it upon themselves to board my train

Nice vid. Nice catch. Have to laugh at the No Smoking sign though. How many railroaders actually paid attention to it? I know I sure didn't. I smoked anyhow. If I was on a train for 12hrs I sure as hell didn't wait to reach my objective terminal before lighting up. LoL.

Yes they have a toilet. It's similar to a RV or bus toilet. Usually found down by the door.
Whats the foot bar looking thing at 4:14? If that like a dead man? Just curious because I saw the alerter reset button, but clueless as to what that bar thing is.

They don't have dead man pedals anymore that's why they hit a button every 30 seconds or so.
The controls looks so complex.
Anyone that's played msts or any of those simulators would've had that thing already moving down the track lol.
Deeremeyer: yes, that kind of cam may be coming, particularly if UP decides to transition to a one-crew cab. I suppose I'll have to deal with that when it occurs. In the meantime, enjoy what you can when you can. Until the UP police burst open my door, I'll still keep posting. And no, you don't know everything and the rest of my readers and viewers don't know everything about my videos or posts or photographs. What makes you think even I am telling you a portion of the truth in my blog?
+BloviatingZeppelin I'm not sure I like the idea of one person crew! Even with the best intentions and technology,there's always a chance of system failure,..I'd feel much better knowing there was a two person crew aboard should a system failure occur with all this new PTC thing coming! That aside,...I like the interior of that SD70ACe,...and I like the sound of it,too! EMD all the way.

No inward camera nice try. and the outward facing camera only turns on when the train is in motion.
Ryan Sullivan most locomotives have inward facing cameras now. Some have as many as 4
Yeah, I heard about that a couple months ago. What a major bummer. I've boarded probably a dozen locomotives in my lifetime (once being allowed to operate it a couple hundred feet when I was 5 years old!), but it sounds like those good ol' days are over now, thanks to asshole "Big Brother". mayhem Mike it is not a GE look at the nose and the radiator there is no GE that looks like that and you can see the number maybe you should go look it up.
This is 100% an sd70ace. EMD’s have a whistling sound during idle that GE doesn’t have
EMD 2 stroke.....very smooth idle with a high pitch sound.

Cool video and thanks for sharing; That being said, you should not be video tapping everything in the CAB and this video should be deleted off of TH-cam. We should not be giving terrorist Ideas how to operate these trains and what switch does what. This is very risky and dangerous. Most will probably disagree but better be safe than sorry.!
