My first duty station in the army. I was there between 2004 and 2008. I visited it back in September 2021 after 13 years. It still looked the same but with brand new buildings in place. It was great to take a walk through memory lane old feelings flooded back to me. It was sad to leave, but one day, I will go back.
This was the best duty station we have ever had and with all the remodeling going on over the past 2 years it has become our favorite. just left in May 2014 and hope to get back soon.
I took basic at Fort Lewis in the winter of 1971/72. In 8 weeks I saw the sun maybe 10 times. I was in A-5-1. The barracks were from WWll. Nice looking country side. Use to spend weekends with my buddies at the Roses motel in Tacoma.
when I was a little dude my family was stationed their 1962-1965. everything was old. I guess they have added a lot of new housing. used to duck hunt on base. the museum was the Dupont Inn back then.
I would say it is a BEST station in the Army. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I was stationed there for 3,5 years and enjoyed every day of it. There are little changes though. Housing office has moved to different facility BEHIND Waller hall in housing area nearby Comissary.
I can't wait to return back to Lewis after my Korea tour....I have under 2 months from PCS...and I CAN'T WAIT!!! There's so much to do and I find the weather perfect for me and my family, and it's very beautiful..There's a ton of things to do in Seattle, which is about 45 short minutes north, Olympia area is wonderful, about 15 mins south...Can't say enough great things about JBLM!!! Was at I Corps from 2010-14, and then finishing off my Army career in a couple years there!!!
My last day here in Lewis. It is cloudy with drizzles of rain from Oct to June...now that's depressing! I don't care for the weather or the traffic but the people r real friendly! Happy to be moving back down south!!
I just moved here to WA State 6 mos ago and since I was born and raised in south GA, the rain doesn't bother me at all as I'm used to it as it rains quite a bit in that part of the country as well. I will admit however, that the constant overcast can get on your nerves if you let it. The hot sun in GA is something I do miss, but as far as the landscape, esp the mountains, the various waterways and the friendliness of the people here, you really can't beat it. I love WA and plan to stay.
HHT/9th Cav Bde (Air Attack) 1988-90, TFRE-II/JTFB (89) . Every day (even rainy days) I could see Mt. Rainier from my room on the 3rd floor in my Barracks. Nice! LS
My Dad was an MP and Vietnam Vet, missed dearly. We were stationed here 3 times. I grew up on bases all over the world and this was my favorite. Some bias here as I was born in the Northwest.
We are only coming from Portland, OR so we are used to the weather. My fiance graduates from Fort Lee (92 Yankee) on the 19th of Feb. and she is taking 2 weeks off for recruiting and another 2 weeks of leave from what we hear. We are excited about a new lifestyle but are nervous about housing. I hear it is hit or miss. Thanks for your advice on local visits.
This brings back memory's I miss living here my dad and the rest of the family was living there I wanna move back I'm not liking it out here in ft. Wainwright, Alaska
This is where we station at =) but I remember before we got married. The barrack my husband was living in is nothing like that at all.. it was a lot crappier!! I had heard of the new barracks .. the one they show on this video is probably the new one which is probably 1 building out of 100 !! LOL im sure they have to find a way to advertise ft lewis somehow..
I'll be moving to Ft Lewis in a month and was wondering if anyone could give advice on where to live if we don't get housing on base, I've heard Tacoma and Lakewood are really bad but places like Puyallup and Dupont seem to be out of our price range. My husband is E2, does anyone recommend living on base as opposed to off base, vice versa? And if on base, what housing area is the best? Are the homes decent? I've heard both good and bad things from people that live there now or have lived there
This was my favorite duty stations. I was stationed on north fort @40 trans. Try to live and work on post because the 5 fwy is no joke on rainy n snow days and the lock down the post on bad snow days. I hated the rain becausr the sky was always gloomy but wa is gorgeous in summer but buy thick clothes now.
