I have a question regarding Chinese elm care. I have Chinese elm kept indoors. Looks healthy. Unfortunately, I noticed green aphids under the newly growing leaves. I sprayed neem oil on the leaves and the soil. Do you have any other suggestions that I can save my bonsai?
Hi Talin, I would recommend you use an insecticides such as Bug Clear. www.bonsaidirect.co.uk/product/large-1l-insecticide-suitable-for-bonsai-bugclear-ultra-gun-treats-caterpillars/ It is very important to spray under the leaves as well as on top and repeat the spray weekly, for 3-4weeks, as indoors the life cycle of the aphids is much quicker than it would be outside and you need to stop successive generations laying eggs. I hope this helps
My mom was ill and was not able to care for her tree, I plan on bring it home however its limbs are way too long I see now how to trim However has very few leaves I need to save it. Should I trim first? Then fertilised to bring it back to healthy structure?
hey im looking foward in buying a pair do i really need to get a fertilizer or does water just do the trick. I live in the new york area so getting this in the winter...could it be a bad idea
All indoor bonsai will need a little fertiliser even during the winter. Outdoor bonsai do not need bonsai feed during the winter - they will not be growing.
Hi peter i got a xmas present from my mum and its my first old specimen Japanese cork bark elm iv done bonsai shohin for few years but this elm i love and hope to have it with me through out life! I can't even lift it its that heavy n big haha! Iv had my eye on it for the past year then finally got it! Its 37in tall 22in wide so about 3foot or so id really like to know if it would take being pruned like a chinese elm say? Iv got back budding all down the thick corky bark and loads forming further back in the inner branches but im not sure what to do hear! Iv always tried to get back budding to the ramification but this tree is a broom style siluet and i dont think it would look right if it had all the ramification in the inner structure? Is there anyway i can maybe send you a couple of photos to let you see yourself and get your opinion please? Thanks hope to hear from you soon Dougie
Jonathan LaBeree This could be seasonal or environmental. It depends if it is the old leaves or new growing tips. If you have only just purchased the bonsai it will be reacclimatising.
Thank you for responding. I have had the tree for just over two weeks now and the leaves that are yellowing are large and small, new and old. it is in a locating the gets a lot of morning sunshine and shade throughout the rest of the day.
Put in a different pot and in the windows in the sunlight. That's what I do and my bonsai is doing great. It's a plant so like any other plant needs sun, water and composte in a large pot to develop.
It has probably lost the old leaves as it goes into winter. All the hormones which encourage new shoots are at the tips of the branches. If you keep the tips of the shoots pruned the hormones push back further down the branches and new buds should appear in 6-8 weeks, from where you have lost them. I hope this helps, kind regards Sarah
Very informative! Even though I work as a florist I'm sadly new to bonsai trees. I recently pilfered one for myself and it's starting to be in need of a good pruning already. Is it unwise to prune my indoor elm now during winter?
great video, btw can anyone recommend what to do I have a Chinese elm in a similar pot and the roots are protruding out of the holes, under the bottom of the pot
+Blessing Makwavarara Be careful to remove a maximum on 1/4 (25%) of the root ball. Please do not remove all the soil. Alternatively, loosen roots around the edge of the pot and pot into a larger pot with fresh bonsai soil around the edge. Stand in water for 5mins following re-potting.
You can use wire to style bonsai trees but pruning is the main method. For help on wiring please see www.bonsaidirect.co.uk/p/bonsai-wiring-guide I hope this helps
Now if only I could actually get a Chinese Elm Bought seeds that didn't work, pre-grown bonsai at stores are usually too expensive or just not very good, and same for anything online
Jacob R well sell thousands of Chinese Elm bonsai, they are beautiful. Please visit www.bonsaidirect.co.uk and select indoor bonsai and then the Chinese Elm category.
+Gabi Trandafir This can scorch the roots of the bonsai and it can cause problems in severe cases. If it is a liquid bonsai feed that you used I would recommend standing the pot and root ball in the sink so that the water covers the soil and try to flush the fertiliser out. I hope this helps kind regards Sarah - Bonsai Direct

Just been looking at your u tube vids _ you are just trying to get more people to notice you _ but you are not doing it in a good way. I will not comment on your efforts _ I am not that petty.
Very informative and you are very funny without trying🤣. Just subscribed.
Yay! Thank you!
Wow!
Great job on the elm
I think it looks fantastic
Is there any certain time of year I should avoid pruning the tree?
if u want berries & flowers, u should stop pruning it in late summer and resume again after it is done producing berries. hope this helps.
Does the fertiliser water not get stagnant if you only use it once a week and then leave it?
Thank you so much for this video

Amazing
Hi where was this bonsai being kept inside or out..
My mandarin needs watering every other day at least, it is going nuts. Should I encourage this?
My mom was ill and was not able to care for her tree, I plan on bring it home however its limbs are way too long
I see now how to trim
However has very few leaves I need to save it.
Should I trim first? Then fertilised to bring it back to healthy structure?
Yes you can prune hard and then new shoots/leaves will bud back in 4-6 weeks. Yes, definitely feed with a bonsai fertiliser. I hope this helps
Is it better to do this major trimming during the spring? or does it matter? thanks
It depends upon the variety. If it is a Chinese Elm and kept indoors it does not matter when you hard prune.
But make cuts where the stem has hardened, not so much on the soft shoots.
Very helpful

Why do I have random leaves all over my chinese elm turning yellow and falling off?

Jonathan LaBeree I suspect it will stabilise in a couple of weeks. Maybe worth sending a photo to the nursery who grew it just to double check.
thank you.

Hello, what kind of fertilizer did you use on your chinese elm? What was the NPK? Thank you.
+Conservative Atheist It's a general bonsai feed. 1.9:0.7:3.9
I hope this helps
kind regards
The Bonsai Direct team
BonsaiDirect Thank you, I was recommended 10-10-10 for Chinese Elm Bonsai, does it matter?
+Conservative Atheist That would be absolutely fine for a Chinese Elm :)
Thank you very much for your time, have a great day!!
Hello I am new to the bonsai world, where can i buy fertilizer for my Chinese Elm?
We sell bonsai fertiliser, if you are in the UK.

Hope this helps
The outside leafs of my tree are fine, further into the centre of the tree there are no leafs, what have i done wrong and how do i fix it?

+Shannon Theis You can prune an indoor bonsai at any time of year. Happy pruning, kind regards Bonsai Direct
+BonsaiDirect Thank you very much for the quick answer!
Everyone I've spoken to said they need to be outside.. Because I wanted to keep mine inside..
@@joej2409 They do better outside in temperate climates. That's not in debate. They can of course do well inside too. Takes a bit more effort
Do you cut it where the leaves start or where a few leaves have grown
We usually recommend cutting after about 2 new leaves. These will be paler in colour.
I hope this helps
great video, btw can anyone recommend what to do I have a Chinese elm in a similar pot and the roots are protruding out of the holes, under the bottom of the pot
Take it out carefully, try to remove all dirt with a brush. And then repot in sniffer pot.
Thank you

+Blessing Makwavarara no prob :D
+BonsaiDirect also I have another question. What about frequent pruning? Is that bad?
amazing
Can i hard prune and repot my Elm the same day ?
yes, that would be fine
is it nessary to tie with metal to shape the tree?
You can use wire to style bonsai trees but pruning is the main method.

thank you so much!

the leaves on my elm are going yellow, can someone help me...!
This could be seasonal leaf drop - is it the old leaves or the new growing tips?
Is your bonsai growing in a bright position?
yeah i fixed it it was the old leaves and i have it in full sun
Sir Hobbzy Hobbz Great, not uncommon to drop old leaves at this time of year. You may need to move your bonsai somewhere cooler during the hot months!
yeah you leave the mess to the cleaners, thats there job right.
That annoyed me too 😠
It was a joke
I guess he should have got up and walked to the trash can everytime he cut off a leaf huh? Instead of like, cleaning it all up at one time?
What happens If We feed the tree to much by accident
+Gabi Trandafir This can scorch the roots of the bonsai and it can cause problems in severe cases. If it is a liquid bonsai feed that you used I would recommend standing the pot and root ball in the sink so that the water covers the soil and try to flush the fertiliser out. I hope this helps
