SHOWTIME! PATRICK KANE, WHAT A NIGHT.
Tune into the most positive episode in Winged Wheel Podcast history as we open by discussing the pure electricity coursing through the veins of every Detroit Red Wings fan after Patrick Kane's vintage "Showtime" OT winner against Chicago (0:00). We then start the episode in earnest by covering the first of Detroit's 3 wins, a Hockeytown victory over the Colorado Avalanche thanks to the likes of Dylan Larkin, Alex Lyon, Ben "OT Benny" Chiarot, and (another!) Patrick Kane's overtime winner (9:10). Next, a playoff-calibre dominant performance against St. Louis, including Alex DeBrincat striking twice, Kane extending his streak, Lucas Raymond continuing his breakout season, Michael Rasmussen, Fabbri, Compher, & more contributing, Derek "Newsy" Lalonde pulling the Red Wings together, & more (16:35). Finally, Detroit's thrilling comeback victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Chris Chelios Jersey Retirement Night, including Reimer's heroics against Bedard, Sprong & Fischer, & Alex DeBrincat & Patrick Kane combining to write hockey history (24:15).
Next, we're joined by Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit to talk Detroit Red Wings playoff chances, Steve Yzerman's trade deadline ambitions, Kane, Raymond, Guentzel, & lots more (36:25).
Finally, we provide more updates on the Trade Deadline including what we're hearing on Guentzel, Berggren, Emily Kaplan's reports on Kane and Perron, & more (1:03:50).
After that, an update on Detroit's AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins going on a 15 game point streak, lead by Sebastian Cossa, Simon Edvinsson, Berggren, Mazur, Kasper, & others (not to mention Axel Sandin Pellikka & Nate Danielson elsewhere) (1:25:25) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:30:00) - enjoy!

Defining game of season was Colorado. It let them know they could play against the best and win legit. That game defined everyones role's. This team has identity now. They then go into STL game with big swagger and win. I am hoping we dont add anyone that messes with chemistry. I would rather keep this band of misfits and dawgs as is.

Definitely with the identity and roles. Let's not forget they have played much, much better defensively since December. They were giving up so many grade AA chances - haven't seen hardly any of that since.

This game and the March 26th game in 97 are my two favorite regular season games of my lifetime. Both felt completely scripted with OT winners by the PERFECT person for the moment. I'm so high on hockey right now its incredible!

@@chomas8784 I did say my favorite, not the best. But I’ll elaborate a bit. Chelios is one of my top 5 favs ever so the game felt extra special for me going in. Mickey in tears at Kane’s tribute showed just how big the night was for him as well. I admit that the game had some lulls and I am definitely operating on recency bias but I had chills and tears in a way I sure enjoyed.

Having been a Kane fan since his time in Chicago, I will be the first to admit I only started watching the Wings because of him, but it’s safe to say that I’m now a full on Red Wings fan. I guess I needed a new team to stan after Chicago managed to get rid of every single player and even staff I recognised lol (almost cried seeing Keith, Sharp, Hossa and Seabrook on my screen yesterday... the nostalgia was real) but, man, the Wings have been so exciting to watch this year. Although I hadn’t followed the Wings closely at all before, it’s clear to see that Kaner has brought a different kind of energy, experience and confidence to the locker room-and even the fans-in Detroit. And how the team has embraced it with open arms. Thank you RW for taking care of my favourite hockey player and letting him flourish. This feels like a beautiful comeback story not just for Kaner but for the franchise too. LGRW.

I think that game was electrict and one of the best of the season, i think goalies were both on point, and was all in all a fantastic game. We might have not dominated as we did agaisnt the blues, but it was definitely an amazing Match where the Avs showed what a powerhouse they are and we still managed to put a heck of a display.

Honestly in the Guentzel conversation and situation, I'd try something new; I'd offer him 2 years, with a goal and/or point milestone up until the trade deadline in his second year. If he can reach it and show he can produce and contribute, he'll get another 4 year contract.
If he can't meet it, but looks great, sign him for another three and either continue using him or use him as a trade piece

I prefer the big trade swing at goalie over forward and D. Picking your tandem next year between Markstrom, Cossa, and Lyon sounds good to me. If we add a forward it'll just be even harder to get the pipeline up in the NHL, and D is too crowded as is and same thing with more on the way.

Hard pass on guentzel or any top ufa’s and Yzerman shouldn’t be trading Berggren I think he’s got really good potential and should at least play him and let him produce and sell high. We won’t get squat for him at the deadline

    • @-Nv-94
      @-Nv-94 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Why wouldn’t we get anything? You’re selling his potential witch I bet yzerman can sell at a higher price than he could if he plays a full season and only produces 30-35 points at best and shows he’s very weak on the puck. Amazing passer and vision tho 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@-Nv-94 he had 15 goals as a rookie on the 4th line I’m sure if he had more icetime and ppl opportunity over a veleno he can get 50-55 pts. Right now his value is at a low cause he hasn’t had a full chance in the nhl and we’re keeping him down when he should be up. I’d much rather play him a full season expose him on the ppl and top 9 and see what he can do and then deal him if we have to

The game itself wasn't good! It thrived on the excitement and the events on match day. But the goals were all great. Starting with Sprong who was fouled and still scored the goal. Then DeBrincat who scored the goal behind the goal line. And, at the end of the drama, Kane scores the final goal with a counterattack.
SY won't do much during the deadline unless he gets a good offer. Because he doesn't want to destroy the chemistry the team currently has. Even if we were eliminated in the first round and would have been better with new players.
But SY will have a lot of work in the offseason!
New contracts with Seider (7.5-8.5m, 8 years) and Raymond (4.5-5.0m, 5 years)
I wouldn't give Peron, Gostisbehere and Fisher new contracts!
But, I would like to see Sprong and Kane again. Sprong (3.5-4.5m, 2 years) Kane (5.5-6.5m, 4 years).
Here comes the problem with the capspace and therefore SY has to get rid of some bad or unuseful contracts either with trade or a buyout. So that he can bring up young talent from Grand Rapids and/or sign new players.
SY has to find a solution for these players:
    1. Kostin
    2. Holl
    3. Copp
    4. Factory
    5. Petry
    6. Määttä
    7. Veleno
    8. Husso
Here are my Armchair GM thoughts.
    Trade
    DET: Petry (RD/LD), Husso (G), 2nd 2024
    CAL: R. Andersson (RD), 5th 2024
I chose Husso because I think Markström will also be traded.
Petry because they need a right defender as a replacement
DET: Veleno (LW/C), Määttä (LD), Fabri (LW/C), Buium (LD), 5th 2024 (from CAL)
    PIT: Gunzel
Probably PIT would like to have a few more draft picks. But Gunzel was/is injured and we don't know how healthy he will be again and how much his new contract will be.
    DET: Holl (RD/LD), Czarnik (C/RW), 6th 2025
    MON: E. Andersson (C/LW), Heineman (LW/RW)
MON don't have that many right defenders and they don't know whether Reinbacher can play immediately in 2024/25
We get 2 players who can play AHL and NHL
cheap and good for both teams
    DET: Gunzel (LW/RW), 2nd 2025
    OTT: B. Takchuk (LW), 3rd 2025
There are rumors that OTT B. Tkachuk will be traded. If so, that would be my offer
    (very unlikely)
    DET: Copp (C/RW/LW), Hanas (C/RW/LW), Huchinson (G)
    SAN: Blackwood (G), Sturm (C), 4th 2024
    DET: Kostin (LW/RW)
    ???: Waivers, future consideration
    Maybe signings in 2024/25
    Forsling (LD)
    Mittelstadt (LW/C)
    Carrier (RD)
    Trenin (LW/C)
    Marchenko (RW)
    Desired lineup 2024/25
