I generally recommend reactors NOT watch the actual videos for Tool, and instead just watch either a lyric video or have the lyrics available while viewing. The videos can be distracting from both the music and the lyrics, and sometimes have nothing at all to do w/the subject of the song. Like the other 2 Tool reactions you have, most of Tool's videos on their YT channel are still shots of the album cover rather than a video like this. It's a little grainy, but the live version of this song recorded at the Reading festival in 93 is really good and shows how accurately they sound compared to their albums. It's usually the version of this song I request from reactors. They recreate their album sound live like very few bands can these days. If you are looking for more Tool songs to react to I would recommend Vicarious, Push It (live version from the Salival album), 46 and 2, Aenema, Descending, Invincible to name just a few. This song is about the struggle with addiction, and was written with a friend of the band in mind who was also a musician who only felt they could be creative while on substances.
"how accurately they sound compared to their albums" ???? Maybe Maynard's voice is clear. The audio of the music sucks. I am glad they DIDN,T do the Reading version. I get your point not to watch the official video because of the distraction, but don't tell me you need to listen to the Reading version because of the good sound/audio.
@@ysinvangulik1004 This. I was about to hop into the comments to say, while I generally agree that Tool is fantastic live and usually better heard for the first time that way, that PARTICULAR video is just awful. It's grainy, messy, hard to follow, and people are usually distracted by Maynard's theatrics.
Tool isn't a bad for people that have to be spoonfed information or have their hands held to process information they do have the capacity to deduce for themselves. The videos are a showcase of Adam Jones' film and special effects work which is his actual "day job". People who don't "get it" pretty much immediately aren't GOING to "get it" at any point. So, don't recommend that people not react to the WHOLE of the art, recommend that they don't bother in the first place and to go crank some bullshit that requires zero thought or effort to listen to or understand. There are plenty of bands and artists and songs that sound exactly the same and have very easily digestible lyrics and music videos, and those are the ones people who can't "get" a Tool music video should look for so they know what to expect every time after they hear it or see it the first time. No forward movement. Forward movement intellectually is far too subversive
"Stinkfist", by this band, is a personal favorite. Funny, though, it just dawned on me while watching this reaction to "Sober" that there are some sound similarities between these two songs.
The drums. I love the syncopation between the hi-hat and bass drum on the main beat. This song and Three Of A Perfect Pair (King Crimson) are really good practice for hi-hat. Everything from Tool is amazing. Maynard is top five rock vocalist of all time. But you know how those lists go😅 ✌️
The song is about a friend of there's that has to be on something to be creative in his trade. So the friend is always high on something when he needs to be creative. Also is the justification for being under the influence.
Everyone always suggests the same ol same ol. I'd love it if you check out the debut EP called Opiate, preferably Hush or Jerk-Off. Love that EP so much that i listen to it at least once a day
I suggest you watch EVERY tool video as a rehash of the reaction. Listen first then watch. Andrew Wood unalived himself 19th March 1990 at the age of 24
Y'all need to do his life performance of this. Seriously. However much this one shook you, you ain't seen nothin yet. Watch him live with this. You'll get it then.
Haha… I guarantee we told you on the previous Tool reactions NOT to watch the music videos. I’m in the Sam “What is happening” camp, 😙the vids aren’t 1:1. Still glad you got something out of it. That’s the purpose. I’d reco staying with the more classic Tool sound like Ænima. But the experience of watching Danny Carey playing Pneuma live is inspiring.
How tool does their songs is the music is done then Maynard adds the lyrics which on how the music makes him feel first listen, then the video is made by Adam which is his take on Maynards reaction to the music.
I love Tool's videos so much, but they do their songs a disservice, distracting us from how powerful the lyrics are. One of my all time favorite bands.
Don’t watch their videos when first listening. It’s distracting. I would also recommend doing a little bit of research about the song, because they are very deep. Just my opinion. Great reaction
Weird that you found an edited version that TipperGore'd the lyrics, but has the real lyrics in the subtitles. Watching tool videos on a first listen is not recommended. They rarely are connected in any way to the neaning of the song.
Are y'all still even together off camera?! Just curious because I can't help but sense like there's some tension and distance between y'all compared to your videos a few years ago.. Obviously it's not anyone else's business, just an observation..
The song leaves a lot of room for people to interpret it's meaning. For me it sounds like a person stuck in a warped world created by his addiction. You could say the video echoes this with its creepy set design. Addiction is the shadow "stalking" the singer. Offering false (empty) hope and "promises" . While at the same time causing the addict to be overwhelmed with self-loathing as if an invisible "finger" was pointing at him...accusing him of being worthless. The "Jesus" and "Mary" parts of the song may have something to do with seeking salvation or help. However the addict feels unable to find help. The part of him that had once felt optimistic and strong is left in the past and gone forever. So any "whistles" or "whispers" he once may have followed like a beacon to find a way out of his current predicament are gone...in the "past"... lost forever.
Here, I made you a list- VICARIOUS 46&2 PRISON SEX EULOGY BOTTOM FLOOD H. STINKFIST There's many more but this'll get you started. I fell in love with this genre and TOOL at a very young age before I even knew what the songs were about. It's a great rabbit hole to go down.
Tool's videos have always been abstract and don't usually seem to have much to do with the song itself. It'd probably be better to just listen to the music without watching the video as it only distracts from the music, especially on a first time listen.
DONT EVER WATCH TOOL OFFICIAL VIDEOS! Especially not for a first listen to a song. They confuse…they distract you so that you don’t concentrate on the lyrics. Humans are visual creatures: if our brain has to choose between visual and audio, it will concentrate on the visual. That’s OK if the video complements the song, but in Tool’s case, the videos are WILD ……good but utterly distracting. Studio or live with Tool.
The live version is mind-blowing. Tool - Sober Live (Pro Shot) Remastered
Hipster alert
They're reacting to the video and not the song.
fr, for me is better than that one
This video melted my 17 year old brain when it first came out. It's absolutely amazing and so is the song.
I came out my freshman year in college, it was the first time I had MTV and it was played almost on the hour, every hour. Loved it.

Nice. Currently pooping out of my balls.

Justin makes great vids so I agree.

Adam Jones the Guitarist made the video. He has an incredible background. He worked on many movies doing special effects & fabrications.
Thank you.
Another *Tool* track you might want to check out is.. all of them. Enjoy the spiral 🤘🤘
Speaking of complexity, try "The grudge" Danny Carey (drums) will blow your mind.
I’m going to try to beat someone else to this… must watch the live version Maynard on full display in all his glory as amazing performer
"Stinkfist", by this band, is a personal favorite. Funny, though, it just dawned on me while watching this reaction to "Sober" that there are some sound similarities between these two songs.
Used to love this song....been a while since I've heard it....thanks B&B!!!
The live version is Epic!!! Probably their best live performance ever...seriously, pure genius
Next do Ænima such a great song and just seething with distain for California.
Loved her facial reactions throughout the video. Funny stuff.
You missed a bet with this one: The live performance is wild…..a piece of performance art for sure.
Love love love yall. Busy moving. Get this absolute masterpiece later lol. ❤

46 & 2 is a must
Must watch the live version
Danny Carey is amazing on this song, some of my favorite drums from this era
The song is about a friend of there's that has to be on something to be creative in his trade. So the friend is always high on something when he needs to be creative. Also is the justification for being under the influence.
I was 17 when this came out and the video blew my mind and started my Tool relationship.
My mum does the housework listening to Tool for the last 20 odd years 😂😂😂😂😂 Such a Good channel you two✌️kia ora from New Zealand 🇳🇿🤙🍻⚘️
Everyone always suggests the same ol same ol. I'd love it if you check out the debut EP called Opiate, preferably Hush or Jerk-Off. Love that EP so much that i listen to it at least once a day
Hush definitely deserves a reaction . Probably as much as people react to the pot
Love TOOLS animated videos 😅
Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2. Also Rosetta Stoned, all 3 songs from the 10,000 day album.
This is the one that started me down the Tool rabid hole decades ago
"...with big pointy teeth..."
A rabid rabbit hole?
@RabbiSteve1 Yes, you caught that? It was intentional.
“Prison Sex” is the most vivid depiction of the psyche of a sexual predator I’ve ever come across, so…really disturbing, but also brilliant.
I absolutely love this song you should hear it at my volume
I would love for you to do Stinkfist. That’s my favorite tool song.
Some have suggested that the final word isn't "want", but "hold"
More TOOL 🔧 Greatest band ever. Not a single bad song. 🌀
EDIT: OH NO! 😮 They did the video 😂
Not best band ever, but pretty high up there.
@curtiswilson3569 thanks for your incorrect opinion ✌️
I suggest you watch EVERY tool video as a rehash of the reaction. Listen first then watch.
Andrew Wood unalived himself 19th March 1990 at the age of 24
Oh wow. I clicked on this so fast!! It's an experience to even watch this.
The song is about the lead singer and his addiction battles.
No, it's about a friend of the band who claimed he couldn't perform music live without getting wasted and they thought it was a copout
Tool
Why can’t we not be sober?
Tool is a workout for the mind
Unfortunately most of the population are mentally malnourished
You should have watched the live version.
About a musician friend who is more creative when not sober
Now do the live version at Reading Festival in 93. Do it. Now.
Do "the grudge" from Tool
Y'all need to do his life performance of this. Seriously. However much this one shook you, you ain't seen nothin yet. Watch him live with this. You'll get it then.
Golden rule…. Never watch Tool Video’s on 1st listen ! (Audio only) Adam Jones (guitarist) created all Tool video’s.
🔧🌀⚙️🌀👁🌀⚙️🌀🔧
Haha… I guarantee we told you on the previous Tool reactions NOT to watch the music videos. I’m in the Sam “What is happening” camp, 😙the vids aren’t 1:1. Still glad you got something out of it. Why can we NOT be sober.
Listen to the message
Nice to see Sam get a little lost in this one!
🤘🏻🌀
Anything by steely Dan ...I would love for you guys to react to them
How tool does their songs is the music is done then Maynard adds the lyrics which on how the music makes him feel first listen, then the video is made by Adam which is his take on Maynards reaction to the music.
All TOOL songs need to be heard
😊
You need to listen to Aenima, Schism, and 46 & 2
👍👍👍👍👍👍
So when are we finishing the Napoleonic wars from the TH-cam channel epic history TV?
Perhaps the second creature is a harder drug..? Then i wonder; "which drug is the telescriptist and his humanoid instrument?"
I love Tool's videos so much, but they do their songs a disservice, distracting us from how powerful the lyrics are. One of my all time favorite bands.
Everyone who thinks that lifting weights will make them more attractive should see this video.
Ouch lol
No wrong answers. There’s the lyricists meaning, the bands meaning, and the listeners meaning. The video is mostly, if not all, Adams interpretation.
James the lead singer is up stage right in the corner not like any other lead singer in a band
Not enough space- primitive 😁
You should listen first to the audio only instead of trying to watch the video, lyrics while listening to the music.
Don’t watch their videos when first listening. It’s distracting. I would also recommend doing a little bit of research about the song, because they are very deep. Just my opinion. Great reaction

Its a halfway house.
it was tool but she got disturbed
The song leaves a lot of room for people to interpret it's meaning.

Clots in your arteries
Here, I made you a list-
VICARIOUS
46&2
PRISON SEX
EULOGY
BOTTOM
FLOOD
H.
STINKFIST
There's many more but this'll get you started. I fell in love with this genre and TOOL at a very young age before I even knew what the songs were about. It's a great rabbit hole to go down.
I don't think I've ever heard y'all mention yourselves as hip hop heads if that being the case have you heard necro I need drugs or rapping Duke
your face when the lyrics dont match the song 🤭 3:00 actually the lyrics are rigth, you are hearing the censored version 😅
Tool's videos have always been abstract and don't usually seem to have much to do with the song itself. It'd probably be better to just listen to the music without watching the video as it only distracts from the music, especially on a first time listen.
Clearly, over your head. Read the lyrics.
I think the video version of this has always been very distracting. I like the live version much better.

Do not do the official videos for Tool
You're reacting to the video and not the song.
The videos are just a distraction and have nothing to do with the music.
No more satanic shit please.
Everyone knows Tool is HOF
NEVER a video reaction to Tool unless it’s a live performance. ONLY lyrical Tool reactions.
