The biggest weakness of the VF franchise is the weak presentation and lack of storyline. That's what got VF beaten by TK, especially after TK3, in a period when everything was embracing storyline and lore more than ever before... and VF refused to correspond to that tendency. By the late 90's, SF got more story, MK and the SNK games got even more story... and 3d fgs were already born under that story/lore direction like SC (Soul Edge at first) and Rival Schools... and 2d fgs as well like The Last Blade and Guilty Gear. Pretty much the whole rest of the fg genre adopted that new form of showing more storyline.

I'd been ignoring 3D fighting games except for a period in the '00s playing Mortal Kombat and Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen and following Tekken and Soulcalibur until I ended up doing some research a few months ago that made me wish Virtua Fighter and Toushinden (whose respective first entries I had dismissed way back in the day for their ugly polygons) were still around (as well as Justice Gakuen, Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, and Sonic the Fighters), as they seemed to be scratching itches of mine way more so than Tekken and Soulcalibur ever did (aside from story presentation). Sega had really great timing to make me hyped for VF5REVO and VF6 now. Anyway, my point is that I wish Takara would likewise get their act together and revive Toushinden more than I want a new Soulcalibur.

One of the things they mentioned in the VF direct that really interests me is the fact that RGG said that their world and storytelling would be involved. i agree with the concerns especially with some of sega's history, but i also feel like you gotta put some respect on VF. they were doing things in 2002 that modern fighting games are just starting to catch up to. i didn't play much VF5, but VF4:Evo was so ahead of its time it's crazy.
    - vf4:evo has, to this day, one of the best tutorial modes in fighting games. it was integrated into training mode, it had explanations of tactics relevant to all levels of play, and it had drills integrated into the explanations to get you to actually apply the concepts. it's like the tutorial mode from UNIST but like 15 years earlier. i still remember it blowing my mind with evading-throw-escape-guard option selects. seriously, if you've never played it, emulate it or look up some videos, it was insane for the time.
    - tekken 8 straight-up xcopied its quest mode, word for word, bar for bar. it's the exact same shit except it's still not as good.
    - the customization was insane! every character had 50+ unique items you could earn and customize your character with. no microtransactions, no DLC, all on-disk
i'm sure there's more, but you get my point. even if they just repeat the stuff they were doing in 2002, they'll be pretty competitive with modern games in some aspects. if they can bring that same level of quality to the additional things modern gamers expect then we'll really be eating good.

but it is 2024. they have been out of the game. this is not going to be easy and they are (probably) going to make mistakes. community going to have to do some heavy lifting

@@doogies i mean i agree with everything you were saying, especially about the difficulty of supporting the game and building a community and competitive scene, i just wanted to make the case for some optimism as far as the actual game is concerned.
it's true they've been out of the industry for a while and they've got a lot of of stuff to figure out, but it's also true that in a lot of aspects, like the ones i mentioned, the industry has barely caught up to where they were with VF4. the fact that they were so ahead of the curve in the past gives at least a little reason to hope that they might be able to do that again with the more modern aspects.

@@doogiesas a long time, serious VF fan, this is the best video I’ve seen on the subject. Aoki seems like a nice guy, but I think he’s really dropped the ball w vf5. Sega has given players ZERO reason to care about their game in the last 3 years. 10 million people downloaded the game, and what did they do? Made a Japan-only pro league.
That’s the most out-of-touch shit I’ve ever seen. But that’s exactly what they’ve been doing to the fan base outside of Japan for 20 years. Whole versions of the game we never even go to play.
And now, it’s cool it’s on PC… but no Xbox? No cross play? No rollback for ps4/5? No new moves (‘check it out everyone, old moves!’), no new stages, no new characters….
They have a LONG way to go. Dude namco has done more w their game in the last 24 hours than Sega has done w VF5 in 15 years.
You’re correct: it’s getting a lot of TH-cam traction right now, because that’s clickable content for creators. 2 weeks from now, it’ll be back to no one caring: because Sega hasn’t given anyone a reason to care. It’s the same game from 3 years ago (sorry, from 15 years ago…). The audience you want to get, that is, people who aren’t currently playing, literally won’t be able to tell the difference from a balance patch & some changed moves.
Just look at the customization options relative to t8, or even t7…. It’s laughable. They need to wake up
Let alone t8 replay function, seasonal character drops, punishment training…. It’s a LOT they’re not even attempting, just to keep up w games like Strive or Dragonball, MK, games people think are ‘dead’
I want to see them succeed, but unless they start to change their program, they’re just the game that keeps crying ‘wolf’ every few years.

    • @carlosaugusto9821
      @carlosaugusto9821 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

The fact is that VF is irrelevant now. The pillar of the 3d fg scene is TK, and actually it seems infinitely ahead of VF in levels of public recognition. VF never recovered the status it had in the beginning and kept falling, while TK is bigger now than in the ps3 gen.
The historical importance and such are subjects for fg nerds and have no value outside this small circle. The general public doesn't care about what VF did first, they will care about the actual package of a new release. And the reality is that VF's content package kept looking gradually less appealing compared to other 3d fgs in the 00's.
Sega needs desperately to sell more and grow the audience, since VF being the og and all its technical qualities were never enough to keep it at the top (rather it was totally beaten by TK), meaning that the typical VF community that's always supported the franchise is not enough to keep it going well. The next game will need to show that it really grew in every aspect to start looking appealing to more people besides the typical audience.

Def retain the simpleness to some degree but channel the spectacle somewhere else. Also find a way to keep the flow of the matches to rematch loop seamless and quick. At some point T7 players were def clowning at the netplay load times having to watch the burger king flame effects for what seems like an eternity before the pre-match intro scenes played (and skipped). It wouldn't surprise me to see mechanics and guest characters from Yakuza show up in VF6. That's a very large, relevant fanbase there for them to capitalize on. Good video, you usually have a good perspective on fighting games and the scene.
In my opinion, the focus for Virtual Fighter breaking through and becoming a thing that people globally care about, should be developing a great package.
People might disagree, but Street Fighter 6 set the bar with focusing on having a good system and core mechanics (which keeps players coming back), and also having some content for absolute beginner players (modern scheme, and the scope of the single player mode). I think that should be the lesson to take from its commercial success, and what happened with games that came after it. It's really a tight rope act to pay attention and invest resources on those two big chunks of what makes a game, especially if your mindset from the jump is to straight up ignore one of those.

Sega has a golden chance to swoop up the tekken fans that don’t like the new direction of that series too. I just played some VF5US as one of those people and it’s neat but it also feels like a 20 year old game lol. I’m excited for new VF but I also know if it wasn’t for Aris or Bronson, I probably never fall in love with Tekken.

I don't know, a common complaint of Tekken 8 is that the gameplay is very aggressive and doesn't really favours defense that much; and Virtua Fighter being such and aggressive fast pace game, doesn't sounds like the must appealing alternative for a Tekken player (all of this assuming the new VF game won't change the gameplay, of course).

    • @000shad

At least, difference is, in VF there more interactions between players, as a defenseur you 're always active in that agressive fast pace.

Things look good so far. The characters are getting a story and personality refresh which is extremely needed. Ryu Ga Gotoku's writers are excellent storytellers and this is what VF has definitely been lacking with each installment. With the exception of Akira, Goh, Li Mei and Lau, the characters are pretty corny and very much outdated. New voice actors are very much welcomed in my opinion.
AM2 has always pushed technical boundaries and kept VF rooted in more realism than other fighters. It's good to see this team back in action. Based on the small footage that we've seen, I think things are shaping up nicely. I remember vividly when VF was the most popular and technically advanced polygon fighter in the early to mid nineties. I'm very interested to see what Ryu Ga Gotoku along with the older and wiser AM2 can accomplish with today's hardware. I know the average forum dweller hates Nvidia but I'm glad they're involved. Looking forward to VF6.

Sega needs to make sure the new title gives the modern gamer alot to do and the Story mode needs to be solid.

As far as the game, people need to actually play the game and commentators need to be able to bring hype during matches.

I grew up with 3D fighters a lot more than I did 2D ones, VF, Soul Cal and Tekken were my main ones and I'm really hoping VF's new entry gets a *solid* ground to stand on. I'm kinda too out of it to re-learn a fighting game but just through online so I'm hoping the new one has solid SP content too. Revo looks alright but it's very much catered to players that have already gotten into FGs, or VF specifically.
Tekken has ghost battles, story mode, SC had the SP campaign. VF needs that SP content to really let new players just get into the game before stepping into the online world.

Im convinced the game will flop globally. It is really weird how confident Sega is about a franchise that has never been much of a long-lasting giant outside of JP. I'll be happy regardless cause I'm used to the poverty of VF but I'm curious how they think they'll capture the generation and a half of players that haven't really been in a position to give much of a damn about VF in an era where the top dogs are super entrenched and games are faster and flashier than ever before.
Not that VF wasn't fast or flashy inherently but its a diff rubric being used today

I wouldn't assume it will flop, but hopefully their eyes aren't bigger than their stomach. Its not gonna be overtaking Tekken in terms of sales, most likely. However, people are hungry for a more substantial fighter these days, I think it will find an audience. I think people like flash initially but need something underneath it to sustain the game.

I don't think it will flop. But I feel the perception of people thinking the new VF game will be any ways ground breaking is in way over their heads. This is not a new challenge for RGG who took enough time to turn a niche JP franchise like Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku and expand on it to be known worldwide. But I feel it is still equally ambitious to apply the same for a niche title like VF that was only made familiar to the new generation because it was one of the arcade games in Yakuza.
