The gay pimp reminds me of something out of "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" (2009). Which has become one of my 2 favorite Nic Cage movies, depending on the day, due to Bad Lieutenant's silliness & weirdness. If you have seen it already, you'll know why the scene fits.
This is the only movie Nic directed. It was 20 years in his career and he hasn't directed another movie in 20 years after. I feel he loves cinema and the natural progression for these actors like Clint Eastwood, John Krasinski, and Jordan Peele are to get into directing or producing. It wasn't an amazing movie, but it wasn't a disaster. Why do you think he would go on to produce and act in other movies, but never direct again?
He was in debt from around 2009-2020ish so taking acting roles was probably a quicker and easier way of making money than directing. Outside of that I guess he might just be waiting for the right script.
