Mandy review 😎🎬📽
What a fun channel, I just caught up and will be along for the ride. Can' wait for The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (mouthful), Joe, Pig and Mandy!
Thank you. I’m looking forward to covering those movies too, I haven’t watched Joe before so it will be interesting to watch it for the first time.
cool analysis, i was actually paying attentio the whole time lol
Thanks
Can you do a full length version of just the intro theme song?
Maybe for my 100th review or something
@@Geothedude Hell yeah!
The music is really there to show something is completely off between reality and the rationalization and delusions made for example by someone who is in late stage alcoholism, or more generally psychologically in denial even though they act like they know exactly what they're doing. That movie is as amazing as it was sad and depressing.
And just think, 3 years after this Nic won an Oscar. Nic is the only reason this movie has not fallen into obscurity. The TH-cam compilations of his scenes from this are pure gold. And Michael Biehn, who was so great in all his James Cameron movies, is really bland in this and loses any star power he had in those movies. Biehn needed to fire his agent at this time. The actors and are lit horribly, the costumes are bad (other than Nic’s which is kind of awesome), and the sets seem like they were left over from a stage play. Man, this movie is bad.
Interesting review. I watched this last year and didn't really enjoy it but I think I've missed some things you mentioned. Will rewatch when I'm finished with the other cage films
Yeah like I said in the review I think it’s one you need to rewatch.
LOL the theme song was epic! I've never watched much Nicholas Cage movies, I think its now a must! Could you review Manjummel Boys, I'm interested in your take, if you review such filmography
Thanks. I don’t plan on reviewing that movie any time soon, I mainly cover Nicolas Cage films but I might watch it some time.
I absolutely adore this movie and for some reason, it's not that sad to me, it's mostly uplifiting! and light-hearted.
I thought it was quite melancholic but I know what you mean about it being uplifting.
@@Geothedude :) , Well my guess is that life in general is not that happy and the movie depicts life realistically.
Great take on a weird film from a weird director. Don't forget that Gore Verbinski also did Mouse Hunt (1997)
Thanks for the shoutout. I was the one that thought you were Scandanavian. I've thought about this it's the beard and long hair.
Just found your channel yesterday, subscribed straight away, alot of people are looking to the recent past for movie gems, I
Thanks for the sub. I think the end of your comment got cut off.
40 Nicholas Cage Movies Reviews (technically one TV show)...give this man an award...what do you consider these, they're sort of reviews, video essays, and mini-documentaries all in one?
Yeah I think I’ve covered 40 movies 2 shows and one videogame. I think a video like this one might qualify as a video essay but some of my other videos like my national treasure review are a bit less in-depth.
@@Geothedude either way, love them, keep them coming
Nice review as always, really enjoyed this movie. Was not nearly as hot on The Weather Man but I think I'm in the minority there
perfect movie with perfect cast
You’re English!? Why did I think you were Scandinavian?
Weird. Me too.
I’m half English, half Irish. Most people think I’m American, a few people have guessed Irish but I’ve never had someone say Scandinavian though 😆
I have just ended GOT so just in time mate!
nice one mate
Thanks 👍
Great analysis once again. Thanks for this.
First Nicholas Cage movie I've seen. Beautiful caster and/or directing. Underratted. Keep on keeping on, Bullshitmon...Pumped for National Treasure and your take on it.
Cut your hair, put on some real clothes.....but most importantly stop thinking you actually have something important to say!
What are “real clothes”?
@@GeothedudeWard Cleaver from "Leave it to Beaver" should be your goal!!
Nice topical reference

It only turns into a Hollywood movie after he visits the fictional version of Robert McKee, who basically gives him the license to go for it. That's actually my favorite scene in film as well. The whole of the first two acts build up to it, if you think about it, and it pays off, imo. Aside from making fun of Hollywood thrillers with snap endings, like Se7en (his brother's script is called The 3) and multiple personalities, the more subtle joke is that the reason Kaufmann split his character into twin brothers is because it's a way of literalizing his own internal ambivalence about writing. It is the split in Kaufmann's personality where one part of him wants to write things like Se7en and just entertain mainstream audiences while winning all the financial and social rewards that come with Hollywood success, but the other part of him really wants to make great art. I can't really tell if he actually resolves this ambivalence in the film, at least not in a way that is sincere, but if he doesn't, it's probably because he couldn't resolve it in his real life. This film seriously needed the Swamp Ape. They should have filmed it at the very least and could have added it to the DVD extras.
Another fantastic review - always appreciate how indepth these videos are. This film was the first (and only to my knowledge) to have a fictious person nominated for an oscar (Donald Kaufman) since he was technically credited as a co-writer to the movie. Matchstick Men is definitely a step down in complexity from this, but I thought it was a very enjoyable watch. Look forward to the next.
I was really impressed by this movie when I first watched it. The main actors did an amazing job. Yet there's stuff in it there are clearly subpar. The cinematography is not that great and the soundtrack? What a boring soundtrack !
Con Air indeed does kick ass. It also has one of the most effective teaser trailers ever - th-cam.com/video/Px8U9fx8TXw/w-d-xo.html Nic Cage is such a legend, love his stuff. Red Rock West being one of my personal favorites. Nice road movie.
Red Rock West is great, I love Dennis Hopper in it.
Hard to hate this movie. I liked it more than I probably should have
Just watched your 8mm video! Now I’m gonna binge the whole playlist 😂
Hey man, I'm from Mexico, and I've been trying to review the whole Nicolas Cage filmography and now I found your channel sharing the same project. I really like your style and you deserve more suscribers. You can add me as one of them today.
It’s always nice to know when other people are on the same Nic Cage journey as me. Thanks for the subscription.
Nic’s own unique brand of rage - commonly known as “Cage-rage” - is quite possibly the greatest thing that ever happened to America.
Mandy is actually a really enjoyable flick.
Yeah it’s great, can’t wait to talk about it after like 45 more reviews
I went the other way with this one. Enjoyed the cast performance (except Diane Ladd, agree here), but overall didn't really like the storytelling style
Are you a fan of any of David Lynch’s other movies?
@Geothedude Sorry I never seen this comment. I haven't watched much Lynch so hard to say. I've heard Mulholland Drive is very good. Are his films similar to this in style?
Blue velvet is kinda similar to this but a lot of his other films are less narrative driven and even more surreal.
Love how thorough you are, knew I was in for a good listen when I saw the video was 18mins long.
Thanks, I’m quite pleased with how this video turned out.
As an on again off again alcoholic, I can assure you there are lots of details this movie gets right about late stage alcoholism... and a few BIG ones it misses. One of the worst things to do to an alcoholic is attempt to force sober them up WHEN they are intoxicated. You are just just flirting with fire at that point and it more than likely is going to end up in a physical fight (or screaming match at minimum). I've been in situations where people have taken my booze from me when passed out thinking, "I'm just helping him!" only for me to wake up in a *desperate* state of withdrawal that any hospital would medically detox you from, but since you have nothing to even come down you go through absolute and utter torture (endless shakes, profuse sweating, heart is pumping so fast you feel at all times you're having a heart attack, body temp goes from hot to cold to hot to cold wildly, insomnia to no end, full on hallucinations, twitches that HURT, migraines all while EVERY bad thing you've ever done runs through your head). When I was at my absolute worst I had basically attempted suicide like this only to somehow still be here today... I would start with a drink on a Friday night, which would spill over into Saturday morning and then eventually the whole weekend and then calling out of work the next week until my body couldn't take it. Some jobs would let it slide and I'd use my sick time, others just fired me... You really do fully lose track of time. For me a bender would be waking up in a darkened room only illuminated by my computer monitor, shuffle back over to the desk where stale whiskey or gin still remained from the night before. Pounding down double shots hoping to hell I wouldn't throw up and lose it, and then after a good buzz or drunk is reached, MAYBE watch some TH-cam videos, but ultimately pass back out... This would go on for days. I never liked going out and drinking, I've never been drunk at a bar, I just wanted to be alone and away from the world and slowly end myself. The major issue I have with the film is that it doesn't FULLY show the effects of withdrawal. To be fair it tries to and if they did show it the film would have extended long takes of Ben writhing in pain, instead they cut it down to two scenes and that's about it... There is no way in fucking hell that when I was at my worst I would've had the energy or the balance to go walk the Las Vegas strip or go to restaurants like Ben, that's straight up Hollywood... You become so dizzy and disoriented from having ONLY booze in your stomach day after day after day that it becomes so hard wired into you to find and nothing else. The movie is fantastic, the book is far better to me. I'm glad you mentioned things in the book like Ben only knowing what time it is due to liquor times, that straight up was me at one point. As I type this I have been 70 days sober. I have no idea how long it'll keep going as I am already planning on getting drunk one last time before 2024 (it's December 30th, 2023) as kind of that stupid, "send off" thing... I have no idea. I wish I could drink like normal, get drunk here and there, but my brain is laser focused on the moment it feels the booze buzz ALL it wants is more. Pure lizard brain thinking.
Thank you for typing out that experience, it helps when i understand other manifestations of addiction. I'm 23 and was drinking daily for a year, by May of 2023 I kept running out, eventually had a seizure from the withdrawal, luckily my dad heard me and found me laying on my back choking... I was in the hospital for a couple days and I guess that embarrassing ordeal has kept me sober, my biggest problem is that I feel like I deserve to be able to drink modesty, but it'll make me think about giving up on life and cause me to drink more. my life has been fucked up for a while and my brother died a couple years ago, that traumatic experience put me on a better path in life but made my lows a lot lower
10 years but I went through the same thing. I kind of did a leaving Las Vegas with vodka a coke. id didn't eat just coke and vodka.
Expecting you are dead by the time I write this. I truly feel sorry for everyone around you.
I got 5 pages into assault on Tony's at 5am. But ended up putting the book down to get beer because I was out and the stores just opened. Really hits my cravings.
How are you doing?
I liked Schumacher's movie better than Walker's script. Walker has Machine wearing a Mexican wrestling mask in the script. I'm not even kidding. And I think the choice of music was intended to paint Hollywood as foreign, disturbing, mysterious, and alien. It makes sense because people are familiar with Hollywood. It's not an unknown for people, so Schumacher was trying to subvert this quality and turn something known into something which is unknown.
That’s the best interpretation of the Hollywood music I’ve read so far.
