    The Genuine and relevant advice in this video is what makes it so helpful. I'm trying to learn and improve on filmmaking & sales and personally I'm sick of so many generic videos out there offering hacks and secret templates that just magically land high paying clients.

    • @SjoerdWess

      Thanks for saying this! Those videos are annoying, totally agree. No magic template of something like that. It needs way more than that!

      Yeah, most advice videos seem to base their "advice" on buying a course or already being successful rather than on how to get there.
      Unlike this one :)

    Great video! Currently in a position where I'm trying to grow my network of people in the industry where I live while also waiting for hesitant potential clients to give me an actual solid answer about what we're doing (or not doing) 😂I could relate to a lot of stuff you mentioned both about your own experience and the questions other people left about their situation as well. Love to see videos like these that give a more realistic look on what things are like when trying to make a living as a filmmaker/photographer. It's very refreshing to every now and then see something authentic and not just another "I'm at this cool place shooting the big launch campaign for this big brand" which is a situation most people aren't even close to being in 😅 Keep up the great content, only found your channel recently but I've been diving into your past content and I'm really glad I decided to subscribe and stick around.

  • @FabianBosman
    @FabianBosman ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Sjoerd Thanks for the tips and tricks.
    I'm dutch but I'll write this in english so people can read it :)
    For me the work life started 13 years ago, after my graduation I worked at two companies as a Motion Graphics Designer and as a Junior Cinematographer (Radio 538, Final Kid).
    After my two jobs I became a freelancer and the work started coming (Animation/Camera).
    But after a couple of years I noticed that the balance got lost between the Animation and camera work.
    Now I'm at a point were I'm looking for more camerawork but I mostly get asked to animation stuff and I don't like that anymore.
    Its very difficult for me to get jobs as a cinematographer because I dont get a lot of opportunities or projects to fill my portfolio.
    I also communicated clearly to my clients that I'm more interested in projects where I could film instead of only animation work.
    The comment that you made in the video about doing what you want to do (documentaries for example) is easier said than done. I would love to assist someone with my camerawork for a project, but I'm not a journalist or someone who comes up with a documentary from scratch. Because I'm more facilitating people with camerawork and come up with shot ideas to make an even stronger story for example.
    How would you approach this issue I have? Would love to hear your perspective.

    • @SjoerdWess
      @SjoerdWess  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good question man. Ive heard some similar stories from friends around me.
      I know coming up with your own doc is easier said than done, however, this is one of the best ways to express your skills and attract new clients.
      A good friend of mine has managed to build a strong network of directors with the same vision around him. This way they come up with cool stories, and he is the one shooting it and going nuts on the visuals.
      I would suggest to do some digging in finding new directors on either instagram or linkedin and discuss your case with them. This is the best way in order to build strong relations and shoot your own work!

    Great vid, Sjoerd - thanks for making it! Do you have any advice for shy filmmakers that struggle to come out of their comfort zones on set? I've been trying to overcome my shyness for a while now and I think it's really hindering my growth as a filmmaker/all round human bean lol.

    • @SjoerdWess
      @SjoerdWess  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an interesting question. For what I’ve seen, its very important to speak up and if you’re an independent creative. However, I know how scary it can be if you’re more of an introverted person. My best mate is a photographer and is also rather shy. Overtime he has managed to be confident enough to really show himself and what he does. Since he has managed to land loads of clients.
      I believe its important to find the source of your shyness and make babysteps in order to overcome that.

    • @elliotforeman
      @elliotforeman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SjoerdWess I think the source is a fear of rejection/being seen as stupid or awkward. Appreciate your thoughts man, I realise how important it is for me to overcome this! Cheers :)

    Hey Sjoerd, top video weer en nuttige informatie die ik meteen al kon toepassen! Deze kant van het film maken en de achterzijde wordt toch weinig besproken en al helemaal niet zo transparant zoals jij dat doet.

      @@SjoerdWess Ja er wordt vaak meer geheimzinnig over gedaan, terwijl door die transparantie kan elke maker zich beter vergelijken qua prijs/kwaliteit en daardoor de prijzen overal goed houden. Ben ook benieuwd hoe jij verder je dingen regelt aan de achterzijde!
