Northstar Miniatures: Frostgrave Gnolls unboxed and built

  • Today we'll take a look at the Frostgrave Gnolls!
    I tossed the box a while back to save space in storage, but hopefully that doesn't detract too much from the video.
    The gnolls are a tiny bit less modular than the regular Frostgrave soldiers, if only due to the way their heads and snouts attach to the body (as opposed to the typical head & neck connection the humans have). Despite this all the arms and equipment are still totally interchangeable with all the Frostgrave human kits. The arms don't have a lot of hair on them, making perfect alternative barbarian parts.
    With plastic tribal and wizard kits coming out soon, these gnolls could make for some really fun conversion bits to come up with all sorts of stuff for both Frostgrave and just about any other tabletop skirmish/ RPG!

    A little bit of flock and you have yourself some grassy gnolls! Perfect for snipers...
    I'll see myself out...

    These were the gateway drug for me. I saw how many you could get at such a reasonable price, and they are actually kind of cute for horrible killers. I was just going to use them for D&D, but now I have started playing Frostgrave. I have also bought Wizards I and II, Soldiers II, Knights, and Barbarians. I'm eyeing the Barbarians II also. You just can't have enough female miniatures in sensible adventure gear.

    The could possibly combine well with the snakemen. They seem to have similar necks.

    Thank you for this. Hard to get a good picture of these elsewhere, so you helped a lot. I might be using these to convert the thundercats (Wulfen) to something more like what I imagine wulfen are supposed to look like. I like that the heads come separate from the rest of the body; that means a lot less cutting and grinding.

    gnolls have short tails like hyenas. im betting they are just under the "skirt" of their armor.

    Those flat plastic bases don't help with the size issue. I'd be inclined to put them on GW round bases for a bit of extra height.

      I sometimes do, but even then they look like short people compared to modern GW figures!
      It gets really amusing putting them with stuff from the Conquest game as they tower over them!

    Make for cheap Beastmen for Warhammer. Grab a box for Warcry or Mordheim. Or for Age of Fantasy: Skirmish (though One Page Rules now has their own Beastmen minis, albeit 3D printed). And obviously for Frostgrave.
    For DnD, the weird part about Gnolls is that, at least currently, they're canonically taller than humans. Like seven feet tall on average. Then again, that's probably a result of demonic corruption. In my homebrew setting, I like to make a distinction between Gnolls that serve the demon lord Yeenoghu, and "normal" Gnolls. The latter are generally smaller, so these figures would work well for those.

    Do you have to pin these minis or just glue?

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Straight to gluing! Preferably with plastic cement! Orange Testor's tubes forever!

    Do these look like the D & D Gnoll's?

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I think so. It's the size that may be an issue. They're in scale for Frostgrave, but Frostgrave tends to be closer to 25/28mm or historical stuff as opposed to the wildly fluctuating sizes of all the other fantasy lines.

    Gnolls should be bigger!

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In theory, yes. Taller and lankier than a human. The advantage of having them this size is they're totally compatible to kitbash with the rest of Northstar's plastic miniatures range.
