Don't Buy An Aston Martin DBS - Why The Vanquish is Better (Review)

  • I love the Aston Martin DBS. Not the new one, the old one. Just recently a few TH-camrs have picked one up, and they have been raving about them as both cars and investments - but I think for the money, there is something much better.

I think the problem with modern engines is that they sound great when given "the Beans" but we don't/ cannot drive like that all the time so they end up sounding like a "toot" (being polite) in a dustbin; especially Ferraris.

James...as the owner of both an old Vanquish and a DBS...despite the shitty interior and quality issues, there are 3 things that make the Vanq special.
One: it's the last hand built Aston. It is, in essence, not the first modern Aston, but the last classic one.
Two: it's the only Aston Flagship that isn't a tarted up lesser car, but actually a unique platform.
Three...its just achingly gorgeous. Motor Trend voted it the 9th most attractive car ever made, and there's a reason that Callum chose to modernise it as his first self-named car-he thinks its the prettiest car he's ever made.

However i desire a DBS manual in black because i love Casion Royale. But in all honesty i probably would try to find and get a manual 08/09 DBS in black, maybe pay a bit too much for it and then after 2-5 years of a lovely relation, sell it for a Vanquish (either a 2014, maybe swap the Vanquish S exausht on it, or get a Vanquish S). Both cars do the same job to me, witch is being a lovely cruiser with a great soundtrack and performance to match a good sports car.

I want to share my experience with you of the DBS Superleggera.
In June of 2019 I had the opportunity to view & drive the new DBS Superleggera. It is Drop Dead GORGEOUS as we all know.
That exterior was in Hyper Red with a Blue Haze Metallic leather interior - So Sexy!!
But that Merc dash board (and old interface system) really disappointed me.
I went to that dealer just last week and guess what? ... It and 1 another DBS is still in stock. The MSRP is $430K Cdn (Highly speced)
If I could get it for $300'ish I'd probably get it b/c it drove very nice & sounded super with that silky smooth 5.2 L TT V-12
I do know that some vehicles will have their own quirks and that DBS is the same.

The 3 speed, in Fords large Australian cars, very rarely had a failure, whereas the 4 plus gearboxes gained a notoriety for failures.

Watched the JayEmm review on the AMV8 4.3 a few days ago. I now have a plan. Buy that first, as an introduction to Aston Martin ownership, and then after a 12 months apprenticeship graduate to the new Vanquish! Heaven.
However, anybody remember the 2012 Virage? What about a review of that car Mr J???? Let's face it you covered all the other AM's

There are a lot of manufacturers turning their backs on DCTs, the new M3/4 uses a torque converter rather than the previous DCT.

I live in the Cotswolds and drive to Tetbury and Cirencester twice every day on the school run where every other car of note is either a Land Rover, an Aston or a Porsche. Waitrose last week had 18 LR's in it 4 Astons and yes we counted them for giggles - Trouble is I can never tell which Aston I am looking at - they really have Bland not Brand as far as standing out is concerned. With all that said if you were on a mission to own a 6.0 Litre V12 which wasn't a TWR XJS the Vanquish must be the one surely? Just reminded - a guy from Forge Motorsport which were based in Staverton GLos took me out for a 'spin' in his absolutely astonishingly ridiculous missile propelled Sapphire Cosworth which bore the No Reg plate VANISH - I saw him some years later and he had sold the reg plate but kept the car. Smart thinking? I saw it recently on a Van - which sold cleaning products!!!!!! - Opportunity missed.

I've had a Vanquish S & DB9.2 (510bhp), I'll be really honest, £ for £ the DB9 is better value &, as the engine is exactly the same as the Vanquish, an ECU tweak takes the car to 565bhp. It also has the same carbon ceramic brakes & adaptive dampers. The 8-speed ZF has too many cogs & the 6-speed, whilst a little slower to respond, it's important to remember it's a GT car so speed of changes is irrelevant really. The differences in styling are subjective, but the prices aren't, approx £15 - 20k (pre-owned) between the 2 cars makes the DB9.2 a compelling purchase!

Nah. The 8-speed ZF is THE perfect match. It's a grand tourer after all. And that ZF auto is about around the best auto 'box out there. Manual on a Vantage is perfect, but Vanquish/DBS/DB11 pares better with auto.

    • @qbranch2405
      @qbranch2405 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@AntoniusTyas GT cars are supposed to be sporting. To me, that means more engaging. A torque converter auto isn't engaging. It's lazy, especially on downshifts, even on the Vanquish S. It's a bit better on the new Vantages and DBS Superleggera, but there are times when it just doesn't want to cooperate. If you just want to do motorway cruising, an auto box is fine. For twisty backroads and country lanes, I'll take the manual any day.

Thanks for this JayEmm: excellent; your videos get better and better. I have driven at one time or another all the Astons you mention, and your assessments are completely accurate; but anyone thinking about a second generation Vanquish needs to know it is so low that at some point they will smash the front spoiler against a road hump, and when they do the damage may be spectacular. It’s even worse in a Vanquish S.

@@MrAmzey1 Both. When you open the door, there is a felt seal surrounding the total door/window combination. sometimes these get loose and they are likely to come off ,so that the seal when you shut the door is not a proper fit. This can only be witnessed when you drive the car at a speed of above 30 mph or so. You get a whistling sound. Be careful because Astons are known for this and it is a relatively easy job to renew but costly.
This is the only problem is that I have faced. I got my vanquish serviced regularly and as yet no problems touchwood.
