    Absolutely wonderful! Full of phrasing, legato, pathos. Baroque music should not be boring and crooning

    Where in the devil did this come from? She was absolutely incredible and probably the most under-rated / recorded sopranos of the 20th century. Forget "authenticity"; this is a supreme artist with few equals

    Very beautiful. I would like to say that this performance is not only perfect in style and technique, but emotional! this does not exist that much today: musicians are very correct, deeply concerned with "philological sound", but often boring, normally galcial. Does somebody agree?

    This is another one of those extraordinary voices which seemed to coexist with other supreme voices at that time - and the likes of which are nowhere to be found any longer.

    Bravissima! Finalmente si sentono emozioni e cuore nella musica barocca! Purtroppo oggi una cosa andata perduta con tutta questa odierna scienza della cosiddetta interpretazione giusta o reale nel campo della musica barocca.

    As good an example of "old school" Handel as one can find. As a certified Handelian, I'm more than impressed with Ms. Zeani's beautiful singing.

    Yes Massimo Carli, I agree wholeheartedly! - and I should point out that I originally trained as a baroque musician (cembalo). I later became an operatic tenor, so I have my feet in both camps, as it were. The great thing about La Zeani is the fact that she marries perfect bel canto technique with great musicianship and emotion - this is what MOVES the listener, who does not have to be an expert in vocal technique. That "marriage" is divine, and something that VERY few singers possess!

    I'm glad you have found Virginia Zeani here. But Zeani is a very great singer and a stunningly beautiful woman, not just a pretty girl. Now in her eighties she still looks and sounds amazing. See the other postings on my channel

    As to the male roles, I personally prefer male singers singing male roles, so I am really happy that the bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni and the tenor Franco Corelli sang the two men, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony.

    Most regrettably, even though she performed the whole opera, there are no more excerpts. I understand this was from a studio broadcast and not live from La Scala.

  • @CharlotteinWeimar
    @CharlotteinWeimar  16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Re: IlCaroSassone - This was very unusual repertoire for the 1950s, particularly for La Scala, and there are some conducting and editing problems [there is almost a full stop half way through, and no proper da capo ending]. But despite these shortcomings, like Senaforever, I find Zeani's own performance beautiful, very sensitive and quite haunting.

    Virginia Zeani was a fantastic Cleopatra, she actually makes the historical women slightly sympathetic in this opera fictionalized version. Shame there isn’t more of her performance.

      Bellissima, poetica, ispirata, viva. La Zeani non delude mai. Poi questo colore disperato/malinconico incalzante è da VERI e POCHI artisti. Commovente. Grazie
      Peccato davvero non ci sia intera.
      Comunque no, non ho trovato il recitativo con Christoff di cui parlavi. Ora non ricordo più neanche quale fosse, ma l'avevo cercato su TH-cam.

      @@Tkimba2 , "Alma del gran Pompeo" di Christoff su youtube ci sta'. Io ho la recita completa del teatro dell'Opera di Roma con Christoff, Fineschi, Corelli, Barbieri, Petri...l'insieme non e' una cosa molto seria. Corelli fa Sesto e all'ultima aria fa una cadenza fino al Do acuto ma con lo stile di Manrico. Ovviamente, come non accadrebbe a uno Jarussky, viene giu' il teatro. La Fineschi, voce non oltre il piacevole e con poche, pochissime caratteristiche interessanti ha tre arie tagliate (per me non era piu' in grado neppure delle altre che Gavazzeni gli ha lasciato, ma Cleopatra e' la co-protagonista e non poteva accorciare di piu'). La Barbieri quale Cornelia, sembra la Vecchia Madelon pseudobarocca, poco probabile...Gavazzeni accoppa tutto e sembra piu' la sinfonia "Leningrado" di Sostakovich che un autore della prima meta' del XVIII secolo, pero' il tutto e' piu' Giulio Cesare che quelli di adesso. Ciao e rispondi. (non saprei come spedirtelo...)

      Magistrale. Ahhhh come può essere bella la musica di Handel se eseguita bene e con anima.
      Oggi purtroppo non è così. Ci sarà qualche eccezione, spero... Perché io non ne conosco.
      Se non sbaglio la parte di Chrsitoff dovrebbe essere cantata da castrato Contralto.
      Oggi viene cantato dagli amici di Jaroussky in falsettino e spacciato per "filologicamente" corretto. Come hai giustamente detto tu, il pubblico applaude ma in modo placido. Purtroppo c'è una certa élite convinta che chi viene a teatro lo fa per assistere ad una lezione di storia e solfeggio e non per emozionarsi.
      Se hai altro da consigliarmi sono qui.

    Mark Anthony is not a character in Handel's opera Giulio Cesare. The other male leads are Sesto, Tolomeo (Ptolemy) and Achilla. Corelli probably sang Sesto in this prod. Originally Sesto was a trouser role for a soprano/mezzo, Tolomeo (like Cesare) a castrato and Achilla is actually a nice baritone part!

    Endlich hört man Händel mit Herz und Seele gesungen! Mit dieser heutige so genannte moderner "Aufführungpraxis" ist das leider in der Barockmusik ziemlich verloren gegangen! Es tönt alles etwas steril und gleichmäßig, auch von den stimmen her. Schade.

    • @CharlotteinWeimar
      @CharlotteinWeimar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At last you hear Händel sung with heart and soul! Sadly, with today's so-called modern "performance practice", this has unfortunately been lost in Baroque music! Everything sounds a bit sterile and even, even from the voices. Too bad.

  • @KRISTJAN59
    @KRISTJAN59 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Désolé , le style n'est pas là, on n'est pas dans du bel canto, avec de grands effets, elle va mourir, tout doit être plus profond , plus en soi. L'esprit baroque n'est pas non plus présent, bref cet air comme on dit ne lui va pas.
