      @kwils6685 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mikejosef2470 I like your idea of asking why this one airline was given this advantage. I think the answer we would get would relate to the conflict created by the FAA's dual mandate, to regulate and promote commercial aviation. Although maintenance schedules and the regulations surrounding them should have some slight leeway built in, to accommodate for scheduling or other circumstances, a fleet wide exemption allowing maintenance intervals to be doubled or more, should never be approved.

    • @mikejosef2470
      @mikejosef2470 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kwils6685 I'm Australian and wasn't aware of the dual role of the FAA. Thought it was entirely safety. I agree there's room for leeway. Or compromise... If they want to extend the maintenance of the jackscrew out to 1000 hours from 600, but will replace the assembly at that time so the assembly is never more than 1000 hours old, that might be ok and might suit the airline.
      That said, I watched the Mayday episode for this crash after watching this video, and it goes into far greater detail about the assembly, showing the recovered part. My God... it was just destroyed. I've never seen a screw and nut so thoroughly ripped to pieces with the remains of the nut thread wrapped around the screw. It was designed explicitly with 600 hours maintenance in mind and had no failsafe at all... if it failed, the stabiliser was completely free to move a full 360°. The FAA clearly had no idea what they were doing with this one. A whistleblower mechanic has recommended the assembly be replaced at the last overhaul, but was overruled by the next shift.
      So many chances to prevent this crash were missed. I really feel for that mechanic.

      I wonder if ACME is a specific type of thread in general. At my work we sell irrigation sprinklers for golf courses and the thread connecting the sprinkler to the water supply underground is also called an ACME thread.

    I remember watching this crash on Mayday: Air Disasters, and how it was mentioned you could hear the passenger's screams on CVR. Goes to show how absolutely terrifying that flight must have been for those poor people 😔. That last dive was so violent it had to indicate with absolute certainty that the inevitable was about to happen. It honestly makes me sick to think about. Then you have the pilots that never gave up even flying inverted in a last ditch attempt to save their aircraft and their passangers. And all this cause a trash P.O.S Airline put profit over human lives 😡😡

    This was good but it's missing a few things, there was a maintenance worker who recommended the replacement of that part that broke and it was ignored, he was a whistleblower that got fired and sued Alaskan Air. There were also photos and videos of the rescue that could have been added to the video. Very good overall for a summary

  • @jlvandat69
    @jlvandat69 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The stated cause of the accident was incomplete. From NTSB: "Alaska Airlines did not follow proper maintenance procedures for lubricating the jackscrew assembly. The component had worn down more quickly than expected because of inadequate lubrication over time." So, it wasn't an extended interval maintenance issue, it was mainly a problem with the lubrication.

    • @sligeach
      @sligeach 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It was caused by a lack of lubrication resulting from extended maintenance intervals. To save money on labour and grease they didn't lubricate the screw as often as it needs to be lubricated. With tragic consequences. RIP those souls.

    Brother i respect that you have every right to take sponsorship for your channel i just ask that you please do some research into the companies that you decide to promote. If you had done the slightest modicum of research you would not have taken this sponsors money as they have been convicted of some very shady things and i am sure you wouldn't want to promote a company that has done the things they have done. Thank you

    A mechanic noted the wear on the jackscrew assembly and noted it on the paperwork yet the maintenance supervisor pencil whipped the paperwork and people died because of it.

    Kind of reminds me of the crash of N661TC. Maintenance crew failed to identify the largest wire in the aircraft to have severe chafing even after there were two or three consecutive starter generator failures within a short period of time. Kind of sad that for people lost their lives and nobody was held criminally responsible even though all aircraft require thorough inspections every hundred hours or based on prescribed maintenance schedule ,especially on the wiring.

    Maintenance Controller, A&P Mechanic:
    If I get a call for a possible ODI, I ALWAYS defer to the PIC’s judgement.
    I worked them on the ground, grew up flying with an A&P/CFII father. The emphasis is always theirs on safety of flight, and there are times I catch things they might not expect.
    Safety, Quality/Compliance, Schedule.
    In that order. Without question.
    My condolences to this loss of life.

    The best they probably could have done is skip the "testing flight pattern and immediately try to land, they would have had about 15 minutes until the bolt broke loose
