- After Legs from Here to Homeworld was released, I realized something very important. I think it's pretty obvious that White Pearl is under White Diamond's control, but what isn't so obvious is why.
Why is White Diamond mind controlling White Pearl? Who was White Pearl before she became controlled? Why is White Pearl cracked? All these questions and more are addressed in today's video!

I agree more or less even though I had never thought about that XD Steven also has a history of making bad orders to mechanic like stuff like when he made it make a copy of the entire city, what I think is the order just started it, and it was exacerbated by White Diamond. Also a few ppl have said that she was probably originally pink, and white controlling her.
Also Pearls do have a personality, it just is more like one of a servant.
Lea C. I'm just putting this out there, but the theory that Pearl was once White's pearl is basically already been debunked by the show. In the episode Sworn to the Sword Pearl says that she was only a few thousand years old when she fought along side Rose. For me, this seems to indicate that, since we know that Pearl served Rose/Pink before the rebellion (probably for some time), Pearl is the OG Pink Pearl (she is too young to be a Pearl of the oldest diamond, unless there existed a pearl before her that served White or something like that). Of course, this could be an inconsistency in the show, but I doubt it.
You got this very right. The only missing piece was that the mental damage is a literal psychological scar, which you couldn't have known because you couldn't have known about Pink's destructive power.

I thought it would be because pink diamond was childish, so was her pearl. White diamond switched with her because a childish pearl couldn’t help Pink. She took the childish pearl and broke her to the point of no personality or just mind control. But your theory makes more sense when you apply the cloud Connie foreshadowing.

ShankiaMrsRidiculous Well, the pearls weren't with the diamonds when they were on Earth destroying the gems like the thots they are. So that begs the question: what the fuck do they do when they're not with their diamonds? Be useless?
This could also explain why Pink didn't confront Pearl about her love. She may have thought that Pearl loved her due to her role as servant, thus her saying "I want you to stop loving me" would be akin to saying "I want you to be disobidient" and thus break CG Pearl the same way as White Pearl.
@@michaelhenry3234 one of the writers for the show said on their twitter that pink and pearls relationship was 'more complicated' than unrequited love, so pearl being pinks emotional lover makes a lot of sense

I love the same voice actors for each gem, that's a little touch that I love about this show!
Giovanni Orellana It’s a really clever way to save money on voice acting, and I mean that in the best way; a lot of cartoons will hire voice actors to voice different characters but Steven Universe found a way to integrate that into its story.

I personally really enjoy how they take advantage of each voice actor's unique pronounciation and diction. In this way, "White" Pearl voice really does have a resemblance to White Diamond's voice, even if the pitch and utterances aren't the same. It adds to the feeling of unity.
Now it makes sense why Pink did that face when our Pearl took everything she said as an order! She looked at her with dissapointment than looked away. You would expect Pink to insist on her conversation with Pearl but instead she just held her excitment to herself... She didn't want to do the same mistake again.
The command of a Diamond must have a lot of power over a pearl. Enough to make them do things involuntarily.

This is absolutely the best possible take on this theory I've seen so far, imo!!! This also explains to me why Pink/Rose was so hesitant and awkward to start up any conversation with Pearl at first in the flashback from "Now We're Only Falling Apart"; it seemed implied to me that they were in awkward silence for a while. If your theory turns out to be true (which I think it will, mostly if not completely so), then this could explain Pink's awkward silence; she was too afraid to break Pearl's mind, like she supposedly unintentionally did previously.
However, when Pearl brought up the Amethyst soldiers emerging, Pink got so excited but seemed to try to contain herself again (presumably out of the same fear). But when Pearl offers the idea of Pink shapeshifting into Rose, Pink realizes she doesn't need to be so hesitant with this Pearl; she feels that she finally has a companion she's wanted, that she has someone who can match her so well in such an unpredictable, yet seemingly perfect fit.
(That got sort of shippy at the end, but I do love them together ;u; )
I'm pretty sure she kept restraining herself because she was afraid of Yellow.
That's why she restrained herself from going outside, no matter how much she wanted to.
Yellow wouldn't want her to be friends with her Pearl.
This also explains why when pearl said "Tell me to stop" pink said "Please dont ever stop"

I really *REALLY* like this theory. If they were foreshadowing this as early as Open Book then these guys deserve the Best Foreshadowing In Any Animated Series Ever award.
They forshadowed pink diamond as steven and litterally the entire show in episode 1 with cookie cat theme song

Another foreshadowing is in uncle grandpa where he says steven should polish his gem twice a year . Pink quartz doesn't have to be polished at all , but guess what gem does. Yes. A diamond.

Oh my goodness, I also just realized another part of the Cloud Connie/Pink(White?) Pearl parallels. Real Connie was trained by Crystal Gem Pearl to be sort of like a "knight" to Steven, who's sort of the new Pink Diamond. In a sense, she's technically passing her baton off to Connie, for her to become Pink Diamond's new "knight", sort of.
Not only has Pink gone through so many changes in personality and form (especially if you count Steven, even though he's his own person, but still), but now in at least a symbolic way, Pink Diamond (Steven) is now also coming into a new companionship of similar nature.

Maybe when Pearl said, "I need to be replaced immediately!" to Rose in the last Steven Bomb, it was her remembering what happened to the original Pink Pearl (White Pearl)? That's what it reminded me of at least, because Pearls are supposed to want their Diamonds to have the best they can.

I think that the damage on White Pearl, while symbolic of the missing eye from CloudConnie, was still done by White Diamond, who I theorize has the power of permanence. This would also explain why, although the other three can temporarily cure corruption, they cannot fix it forever without White, and why they would fear her so much
mlq1718 yeah I agree with this more. Plus it was also confirmed that's white has an "abusive" relationship with her pearl. With is probably due to her disobedience and why she just started mind controlling her.
I like this thought too.. I think if the theory in the video is incorrect in any way, we will see this instead! Both solid theories

Serenity Galletti It’s funny, since if anything, White was sort of putting Volleyball outta her misery by controlling her mind. You’d think that if your literal eye is cracked, it’s gotta hurt. It’s also funny how all of us were led to believe that White broke Volleyball, because it seemed so obvious, but then Steven universe future came out 😂

GIIIIIIIRL YES. I am HERE for white pearl’s creepiness. I like the idea that Pink accidentally broke her pearl. It makes sense since she’s seen as a child by the other diamonds. We see her as an adult thanks to Steven and the Crystal Gems’ povs. Kids aren’t usually careful with their playthings. I’m just curious as to how pink reacted to breaking her pearl and what she did right after. Did she call for blue or yellow? Did she get yelled at? Was white pissed????

Cartergames :P maybe not in looks but age can always refer to progression of mindset since the crystal gems and Steven’s forms are based on their mental state. Their physical forms became more mature when Rose disappeared and Steven took her place. Since grief affected the gems this way, I’m curious as to whether or not Pink’s “shattering” also affected the Diamonds’ state of mind/forms

this was so close to what actually happened omg
white diamond’s power is permanance, the diamonds were able to heal centi, but not permanently. even though corruption wasnt their goal, and they most likely added white to the attack to make it more potent. i think that without white being there for the attack, the corruption wouldn’t have stayed, even if corruption wasnt yellow and blue’s intentions. it also makes sense as to why we need white to finish the healing process, since blue yellow and steven were able to heal her fully, but not permanently.

As the Pearl to White Diamond she has to do things on her own volition and the pearls can do stuff on their own but when they get an order they have to follow it. However pink diamond gave her Pearl and impossible order which was what broke her
I think Pink Pearl mirrored Pink Diamond until she was caught doing something that WD discouraged--like the best friend of the rebel that ends up getting sacrificed, and--rather than punishing Pink Diamond, WD goads her into switching out the supposedly defective Pearl for our Pearl under the guise of, "You broke it/overloaded it..."
There's no way WD can be that forgiving to fork over to PD *another* Pearl without something sinister happening to the first one.
Like the parent that deliberately touches your stuff and then when they lose something valuable to you and they don't want to tell you that they broke it, so they buy you a replacement thing in the hopes you'll forget about the original.

Well now in the future the theory was basically true and accurate. Since in future we discover white pearl whoever was actually broken by Pink and was the Pearl before Crystal gem Pearl.

I remember they foreshadowed the diamond authority in “keep beach city weird” near the end Where Ronaldo is like “it’s called the diamond authority!” And there was like, a dollar with an upside down diamond on it, I think it foreshadowed about pink diamond
Watching this after the show has concluded and future and what not though there is something that are completely correct it's like really nutty how you figured out the general gist of what actually happened add using a episode. Honestly never even kind of crossed my mind

I want to add one thing: I don't think White is controlling her. More like, just like Queen Ant, she "programmed" her mind to efficiently follow out commands. This makes sense though: Pink told Pearl to be disobedient, she started acting out, White took her in and exchange her for her Pearl, Pink Pearl still kept acting out so White, being emotionless and 100% efficient, 'punished' her by breaking her into a perfect servant.

I think you're spot on, except that I sorta feel like PD broke her original pearl PHYSICALLY, like when she shattered the window in the base on Yellow's planet, only her physical force left a lasting damage on her pearl's form, not her gem. Maybe.

I do believe that the pearl used to belong to pink, but something that still feels strange is why white diamond would want a broken pearl when she could just order someone to make her a hundred new ones. The only way I could understand white wanting to keep a pearl who looks like that is if.....well...white diamond broke it herself, changing the pearls personality to behave exactly how white wanted. 😳 idk it's freaky to think about but it seems likely

In steven universe future, we now see that white's pearl now nicknamed volleyball turns out back then used to be pink diamond's pearl, she said that pink hurt her by accident.

Pearl's System reboot song having a 3 in it supports the Pearl swap theory. In the first bootup, Pearl imprinted on White, the second Pink, and the third time being Greg. Also our Pearl always tends to wear Cyan, Yellow, and a light Magenta in her outfits as if she's matching all of the diamonds, as if she represents their boss White. Peridot did remark on how Pearl wearing all 3 colors suggested she was an especially important looking Pearl. Plus she has her white Pearl on top of her head just like how White has a diamond on hers. Also, our Pearl cautioned Steven against teasing Yellow Pearl too much unless she'd break which would suggest that Blue, Yellow, and Pink Pearl aren't as mentally strong as our Pearl, the true White Pearl.

This actually makes alot of sense.
Most people think that our pearl was originally white's pearl but I feel like that theory is wrong. I instead believe that she was originally made to serve all the diamonds. As if, she was to do whatever any of the diamonds asked, not just white. Sure, she might have mostly served white, but her appearance and personality contradicts that.
•First of all, we can't exactly know what white was like before pink left but from what we can assume she was controlling even then.
•As for blue, she has always been emotional and caring. Just wanting pink to be happy.
•Yellow has (from what I assume) been fairly cold and serious.
•Pink has always been like a little kid, playful, imaginative, but quick tempered.
Now let's pick apart pearl's personality!
•She cares for Steven immensely and only wishes for him to be happy. But she is still very controlling, wanting to know what he's doing, what he's saying, everything. Over time she has gotten more relaxed but you can tell she has been anxious for him. (i.e. the song "Strong in a real way")
•She is very emotional, she is quick to cry (i.e. when bismuth was back, baby Steven, and dancing with greg) She's emotional and it effects others. She doesn't feel like she is strong, just like blue feels empty (or at least very sad) without pink.
•Then she is very serious too. She doesn't take jokes lightly (i.e. most of what amaythyst says) and doesn't trust Steven with important things.
•As for anything relating to pink, from what we've learned from her perspective during Garnet's back story she is very imaginative. She daydreamed about how she wasn't serving pink
ose but was found and rose liked her so much she stuck with her. She also angers quickly (i.e. when dancing with greg in the hotel)
Also her appearance!
•She is pale with pink hair, blue eyes, and clothes that have each of the diamonds colors on them (or at least her old form had all of the diamonds colors, even now she technically does)
All in all, this leads me to believe that she was originally made for all the diamonds, then was given to pink when her pearl "broke".
