My favorite moment was the old guy telling off the mean girls for Kaylee. And then later telling the guys to stop interrupting her because he was genuinely interested in her shop talk.
I get the impression they're into ships as a hobby, like a retired guy who is into restoring classic cars, so they're delighted to have a lovely young lady to talk shop with!
It may be that part of me that assumes the best in people (a small part of me) but the "leader" of the batch of "Mean Girls" seemed to kind of be on Kaylee's side or at least not trying tonput her down a much as the other girl(s) was.

I love something that usually goes unremarked in this episode. The focus is so on Inara and Kaylee and how different they are as women, their strengths, their gifts, and how they interact with people, but I've yet to hear anyone mention the third woman in our crew, Zoe. In this episode we see her being a solid officer to Mal, a disciplinarian to Jayne, a loving wife to Wash, and an intelligent crew member in general. At no point do ANY of Firefly's women get pigeonholed into cliched 'female' roles or forced into pseudo 'male' ones, they all get to be feminine in their own way. I love this show so very much.
The series was made long before Hollywood imposed its idea of a "strong woman": a ninja lesbian with a machine gun in her hands .and the character and the heart.. who cares? too bad
Same with "Lucifer". All the women have there own personality but never are catty towards each other and actually support each other without the overt agenda common today.

"Your daddy tells me it takes the space of a schoolboy's wink to get you out of it again." - Easily one of my favorite burns on a bully I've ever heard, lol.
The writer for this episode (Jane Espenson) said that she always wanted to write a "Jane Austen" style speaking while dancing scene and was so excited to be given the chance in a space western.
This is then first I’ve heard of this…but safe to safe…if she wanted and was excited for the opportunity…she absolutely blew away the parameters and expectations 😊
Often-missed detail: In the opening sequence when Mal steals the wallet, Inara immediately hides it in her dress for him, no questions asked. She complains but she covers for him without hesitation.
I heard in an interview that Summer Glau and Mark Sheppard spent a lot of time together so she could get the accent perfect, to pull off that scene. She nailed it.
Kaylee's dress is the original dress worn by Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. They brought it out of prop storage. It's in the commentary on the DVDs
Most of the characters are some variant of "Chaotic" the exceptions being Book, Simon and Inara. Each some version of Lawful. (Depending on how much leeway you want to give Book and his backstory, and what Simon did to get River.)
And the recording of the Ball's music she's listening to at the end was almost certainly given to her by one of them. She had no time to get it herself, after all.
My favourite Kaylee line is in this episode is "how can we know until we question it (the buffet)". That's so cute and innocent and still so clever and witty at the same time.
I would have liked to have seen how that whole conversation got started. It's not exactly a topic one would normally hear about at a ball in general, intergalactic or not.
My mom hated sci-fi, but I convinced her to watch Firefly. I said give it four episodes and you’ll not only be hooked, you’ll be a full blown brown coat. I stand by that statement with everyone. You simply can’t watch four episodes and not become a fan.
I had kinda the same with my dad. He got hooked on the train job and said "yeah it's a western". My dad never watches new stuff but he finish the series, but didn't like the movie as much.
Just like the Expance. If anyone makes it to the 4th episode, 'CQB,' they'll be hooked for life. Although I was hooked on both shows after the first episode.
In the pilot ep, during the war scene, Nathan was wearing antique pants from the civil war. They weren't fitted to him specifically, they were a little bit small. As he was jumping over some rocks in the battle scene he totally ripped the crotch out of the pants. From then on he was nicknamed "Captain Tight Pants" by the crew. They wrote it into this ep 😄
Inara started Companion training at age 12. Licensed Companions are highly skilled, well-educated individuals. A member of the Companion Guild is a highly respected professional in the 'Verse. I believe this is due to the fact that it takes years of training to become a licensed one and as this episode shows, how disrespecting a member will get you blacklisted by the Guild.
and think being on that black list will probably close a lot of other doors to you too. Like who would want to do business with someone who`s conduct bought him a permament black mark with the companions?
It's not just that it takes training, it's what that training gives you: all the skills in art and culture to blend seamlessly into high society. Basically despite the "day job" you have all the airs and graces of an aristocrat, and are accorded the respect of one.
The Black Listing comes from his threat to "ugly her up." Physical violence or threat of Physical violence (especially in front of witnesses) is an automatic Black Mark.
Note that Mal lashed out at Kaylee, and the dress, only after she mentioned Inara wearing pretty things for her job/dates, and it being after he'd already verbally sparred with Inara about Atherton and his stamina. So yes it was rude of him, but it was from his jealousy about Inara. Bringing her up struck a sore spot at that moment.
Also worth pointing out that he was hauling (reasonably) heavy stuff. I believe the line was "I ain't exactly toting feathers here". In my experience *nobody* reacts well to being stopped suddenly for an indefinite period of time to gawk at something when they're carrying something heavy from point A to point B.
My favorite part is Harrow’s line: “You’ll have to rely on your winning personality to get women. God help you!” Larry Drake’s delivery is just chef’s kiss.
You've probably noticed by now. The jobs change each episode, but the long-term story is River. I think one reason you're annoyed by her is that they were planning on having her story revealed slowly over many seasons. Knowing there's only one season makes the lack of information frustrating. You'll get some answers eventually.
I'm not sure I agree with that. I don't disagree that River is A long-term story being told, but I don't think it's THE long-term story - there are several others. Besides River, there's the relationship between Mal and Inara, the relationship between Simon and Kaylee, the dynamics of Wash and Zoe's marriage and their future family plans, Jayne's reliability and loyalty (or lack thereof, as the case may be), the problem of the Reavers, and Shepherd Book's mysterious past. Those are just the ones I came up with right now off the top of my head and could quickly describe in a non-spoilery way - I can think of a couple of others and I suspect there are more. Not only that, if the series hadn't been cancelled it's likely that even more would have been introduced, at least some of which may have already been planned. All of the ones I listed are at least touched on in the movie. Most have something of a resolution, although there's no way in just one movie to really focus on and satisfactorily resolve all of them and at least one quite intentionally doesn't get resolved at all.
@@hkpew Agreed. I cannot find a reference for the life of me but I read about "Blue Sun" plot line once that never happened too. It's a company that's name isn't mentioned at all but it's on characters t-shirts, the Cry-Baby from Ep1 and various other places. Little teasers that already plant the seed for stories already (sort of) in motion. (In this episode, in a blink and you miss it moment, you can see the packaging River destroys has the logo).
@Hans Pew All if those aspects are character development. With River, people are after her, and no one knows why. Hell, the movie is basically based around her (no spoilers).
@@Heritarshe Right, blue sun has ties to River (no spoilers) and what happened to her. If you eliminate all of the episodic jobs they have, what you are left with is the overarching story of what River is and why people are coming after her.
Joss Whedon has said 2 relevant things in commentary: first, that he was planning on 5 to 7 years worth of material.; and, second, that this is a show about 9 people who have 9 different secrets. We have seen hints about a couple, we will see more about all of them. We will get sime answers, but some are still a mystery.
Inara with the sword: Morena Baccarrin stated, behind the scenes, she was a little disappointed that she had about 3wks of classes and figured out a bunch of maneuvers, just to be in this episode doing a simple 'dodge and counter' move. 😄 I would've liked to have scene her perform a few sword maneuvers, also. 😊
So she would have been the only person in a tv show or movie to actually know how to fight with a sword? Most sword scenes in media are just very funny, because the choreographies aren't exactly constructed to look realistic anyway.
Hands down, my favorite line from the show overall is Kaylee’s line when Mal tells her that’s the buffet table. “Well, how can we be sure if we don’t question it? It always brings a smile to my face.
@@elvwood Totally keeping in character. Kaylee’s the best. She’s like the only unjaded one onboard, then I think next would be Wash. Those two get the goofy at the drop of a hat. It’s great.

Firefly really is lightning in a bottle. The chemistry was just perfect. Re-watching it is like going to spend time with old friends. It doesn't matter what "adventure" is happening that week, it's just time to hang out with my crew. Don't worry about getting annoyed at River. She's annoying the crew too. I so love her moments of clarity where she'll do something or make an observation that's just profound. Her scene with Badger was a great example. So much more to her than someone who's a bit wacky in the brain pan.
"Time to switch to sheep" I 'bout fell out of my chair laughing. O.M.G. what a comment!!! Great reaction / review. As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
Firefly's treatment of the Reavers is a great example of "show, don't tell." Very little is actually said about them but when you see how the crew reacts, you know they're bad news.
It's the same approach Alfred Hitchcock used. He once said what the audience imagines is more horrible than anything he can put on the screen. Recall the classic shower scene in Psycho; all we see is the woman screaming, then, blood running into the drain. In a way that's more terrifying than any slasher scene.
It's always amazing how this show can be so relatable. I was in Mal's shoes once, speaking out quick because I thought I was being clever, and instead I was just a -- Well, you know. Spent a little money, and a lot of effort to apologize by doing what the gal had always wanted to, spending a weekend in the mountains with nothing but the stars and the sound of the lake. We eventually married, and still are. The lesson? Be a Mal... but be a Mal who THINKS a little bit...
It's a big difference between respecting a person for who they are and respecting what they do and it's a great peek into Mal's view of the world. EDIT: It's really important to pay attention to what River says as nothing is throw away lines, she's just referencing things that haven't happened yet.
I really appreciate that your channel actually includes your thoughts and feelings on the show. This is the type of reaction I find fun to see, not just a person's face on screen for a bit and then they sign off and don't actually engage. You earn my thumbs up, no question.
@@alex0589 Right. I watch quite a few reactors, but there are only a few others that I feel the need to watch through more than a few minutes of post show commentary.
@@hkpew The reactions that end right when the reaction does are a little disappointing to me. @@susanmaggiora4800 I can only think of one channel that I've watched that does that. I agree that that's less than optimal, too. But the only reason I don't find the ones that go on for half an hour or more even more annoying is that I can just stop watching once it quits being interesting, which happens sooner for some than for others. (In case it wasn't clear from what I said earlier, this channel is one that I've always enjoyed watching to the end. Not that she's ever gone on for half an hour or more that I can think of, but the commentary at the end of this video is longer than I would have wanted from most reactors.)
River's conversation with Badger is a fun way to give Badger's history while also signifying there is something more to River (than just damaged). Lots of dual purpose dialog and scenes in Firefly that give information without being dumbed down and obvious.
I enjoy the contrast here of the old school versus new school aristocracy. Sir Warwick Harrow and Sir Murphy (the older gentleman that helped Kaylee out) are quite different to Atherton. Both older men have several medals for military service which Atherton is pointedly lacking and seem to value character above all, which they both seem to be able to sense in a person. Atherton possesses the veneer of a gentleman but underneath that he possesses no Chivalry at all. Look how he treats women compared to the older men!! Look how Atherton treats Duelling, like it’s just a game, which is in contrast to Sir Harrow who clearly takes it very seriously and is disgusted by Athertons behaviour. Atherton is New Money really. A man that earned his fortune and position through selling goods to the Alliance. Atherton even wears clothes that are like an Alliance uniform in contrast to the older gentleman that something that resembles wear older dress uniforms. The Old Aristocracy earned their position through hard work and military service and the New Aristocracy are dependant on the Alliance for their position. There’s also a great production note about the crowd of men surrounding Kaylee that says they’re all Gentlemen Farmers and highly value hard work and technical skill above all. It’s just interesting World building.
I love how just the act of getting a job is a big victory for Mal, even if he nearly dies in the process. It shows how much he values his independence and ability to go his own way, without a fascist government constantly breathing down his neck. Every day he gets to keep doing that is a win for Mal. I also really love how he's able to gain the upper hand in the duel when he's allowed to fight his way: dirty and scrappy. There is no finesse in Mal's fighting style. He's the hockey player who'll pull your jersey up over you head and start punching you in the face while you can't see. But Mal's style is effective, and it's what's kept him alive all this time. But it's a great visual metaphor for how Mal doesn't belong in that world, and how he thrives when he is not bound by their stuffy rules.
River's story developes but she is intentionally an enigma. We saw glimmers of her story in the the first episode but she is the puzzle character with each episode showing us just a hint more. Of all the characters, hers is the most nuisanced because the seemingly irrational outbursts become clearer and relevant if you pay attention. The cans were a connection, a symbolism to her story. Firefly is a must for rewatching because there is so many "missed it the first time" moments.
Kaylee is adorable in this episode. Food first. After my own heart. I loved River's chat with Badger! I replayed that scene over and over and over. If I take away one thing from this episode... If I'm ever in a duel, don't swing like Mal!! It's all in the wrists.
This episode highlights the differences between the social classes in the Firefly Universe. You will notice that Badger is very focused on his social standing and he is the catalyst that ties the story together. Mal's feelings for Inara combined with his disapproval of her career choice is also a strong component to the story. *In the scene where Mal insulted Kaylee:* Kaylee is very vocal about Inara's glamorous lifestyle as she admires the dress. Mal is noticeably uncomfortable. He even complains that the bag he is carrying is too heavy - wanting the crew to all move on. When that doesn't work, Mal insults Kaylee. Inara's glamorous career really hits a nerve for Mal - even to the point of lashing out at adorable Kaylee. At this point we can see the 'heavy bag' isn't heavy at all for Mal. All we see is Mal's regret for insulting Kaylee while Jayne stands clueless (lol). As you pointed out, Mal chose Kaylee for the Shindig mission (instead of Zoe) as a form of apology. Mal even makes certain Badger pays for Kaylee's dress (which most likely will later take from Mal's share and not Badger's brokerage fees). *"Sad little king of a sad little hill"* Somehow, the "unstable" River knew how to handle Badger better than the rest of the crew could. Badger was so charmed he didn't even want to hold River at gun point. The crew was too shocked to take advantage of the diversion. NOTE: Mark Sheppard (Badger) worked with Summer Glau (River) extensively to make certain she could copy his accent perfectly for her scene with him.
The thing about River is that the things she says/does almost always mean something, either foreshadowing or clues to her story, but a lot of it is stuff that you don’t realize means anything until you know more. Once you know her story, you’ll catch them on the rewatch.
One thing I'll say I respect about Mal: he's honest to a fault. He calls it exactly as he sees it, to the point where it becomes a detriment in a lot of circumstances. This episode is a *perfect* example of that. He point's out how impractical it would be for Kaylee to get the dress, and insults her in the process. He blatantly states his distaste for Inara's profession - insulting her in the process too, seems to be a pattern - but will adamantly defend her independence as a person in spite of that dislike. Which in turn gets him in a duel almost to the death. That hardened rogue with a heart of gold is an awesome trope, and Nathan Fillion did an amazing job with it as Mal!
Your glee at seeing Kaylee enter the ball was awesome to see 😊 Given your reaction to David in The Last of Us, I’m not surprised to your reaction towards Atherton. Always gritted my teeth whenever I rewatch this episode.
Regarding River (not a spoiler, just a detail from this episode that takes a frame by frame to notice): She wasn't tearing labels off at random, and not from every can. The torn ones had a commonality.
@@Caseytify For someone so early into the series, I was being intentionally vague. Getting into detail would serve zero purpose, given that it depends on information only learned well after the show ended.
For anybody that has something fundamentally wrong with them, & _isn't_ already in love with Kaylee, this episode not only puts her atop the list of people you'd save (no matter what) - But you'd sacrifice everybody else on that list to do so. "Take your shirt off" - [Rosé] enters the chat…
Every episode that passes you get more layers of definition to the main characters. They're all unique characters and personalities, and well written. Every reaction to the current situation fits who they are so well.
Regarding the Reavers and the bodies in ep 3, consider this fun thought: It's a strange way to store dead bodies, but not so strange as a way to store leftovers.
"I love Kaylee's room!" They wanted Serenity to be a character in the show. Have you noticed the colors and decor reflect each person? The did so many little things... damn, it was such a good show. So envious you get to watch it for the first time. I'm living vicariously through you.
At first my favourite part was when they announced Kaywinnet Lee Frye. First time I heard that I was like wait a sec, and then you see her smiling in her dress and it's so cute. But that's definitely a close second after that part at the end when Inara looks Mal in the eye and says "Besides, why would I want to leave Serenity?". It was so nice to see her being honest with Mal, I just wish he could be more honest about his feelings for Inara.
The Jayne::Amos comparison is on point. Reading The Expanse, I kept saying "their Jayne is better than our Jayne." Like so many other series since, they took a lot of inspiration from Firefly. And I love their spin on it so much.
I really liked Jane character because later on the series it will be quite clear on a couple later ocasions its a way more complex character than it appears.. sadly they didnt allowed Wedon time to develop further. Amos however took off faster and also had way more room to develop
The reaction you had when Kaylee came out in the dress really brightened my day. I've watched firefly more times than I can remember but I love watching you watch it for the first time. It's really fun seeing you fall in love with my crew😊
When I first saw this episode, I thought that was the greatest piece of dialogue written for film. Twenty-something years later, that opinion has yet to change.
Can I just say that I love hearing you get more and more invested in the show as each episode comes on, and especially that little gremlin laugh you have going on.
One very subtle thing nobody seems to pick up on is not only did River mimic Badger's accent flawlessly, she knew exactly where it was from as she says anyone off of Titan colony knows better than to talk to strangers. Looking back now it makes a lot of sense and is still pretty neat IMO. Great writing.
Calling the Reavers "barbaric" is an insult to barbarians throughout the 'verse. Kaylee has a passion for ships and engines. Gear heads like that. Most of the women these men encounter don't have that passion. So, she "first in" with these gentlemen. Registered Companions are highly regulated and respected. Anara being on the ship is a reason for the ship to be at any world. [Note to self... bring a cheese tray and Sammie if I ever have the opportunity to meet this "funnylilgal" :) (Sammie is the sweeter of my 2 dogs, Ghost is way more stand offish.)
I want to say that this is my favorite episode, I also love Out of Gas which is coming up later but it's not fair to compare that episode against all of the other ones. This is the episode that I probably reference and quote the most. I've given variations of the "mark of a great man" speech a number of times as well as the "I can't abide useless people".
The funniest part of watching firefly reactions is hearing "this episode was my favorite so far" after every episode 😂 becaus the episodes do indeed get better the more you watch!
Another tidbit in their costume design: GENERALLY, they did the opposite of the standard western show where the good guys keep their hats on. In Firefly, the bad guys tend to wear hats (like Badger and Patience and her crew ). Jayne (so far) wears the occasional hat only for practical reasons, but our crew does not wear hats. It's a subtle touch to the design of this Goram Shiny show.
Happy to rewatch this with you. It makes me remember the first time I got to watch these episodes. Honestly it just keeps getting better from here on out
This is one of my favourite episodes, and definitely my favourite of the lighter 'fun' episodes. It's an excellent palate cleanser after Bushwacked. How can you not love seeing Kaylee in that dress and having the time of her life? She may be a grease monkey, but that doesn't mean she can't like pretty things. Then of course, the Mal/Inara tension simmers along nicely and we get some more insight into Mal's character. He may not respect Inara's profession but he respects her and treats her like a person, not a possession. The River/Badger scene is great too, apparently Mark Sheppard coached Summer on how to do the accent. Oh and don't worry, River will make more sense as time goes on. Finally, the "mercy is the mark of a great man" line is one of my favourite Mal moments in the show.
6:43 if you listen to Wash again, he says "her legs, and the part where here legs meet her back, and everything above it" (not verbatim). He essentially described loving her whole body. One could argue that he didn't include her feet in that description, or one could count her feet as part of "her legs". One could even argue that "everything above it" included her mind, since Wash did indeed love Zoe that much. Though I'm not entirely certain Alan Tudyk put that much thought into his ad-libbed attempts to make Doug Savant break into laughter. 🤣
"Every party needs punch".....lol. You got me there...i snort laughed a bit. Glad you found your way here to this series after the Expanse. It holds a special place for many sci-fi fans.
Here you see where Mal's problem with Serenity Valley lay. He does not give up, even when everyone else knows that he is beaten and because of that, he cannot lose (unless he dies).
Enjoyed the reaction. This is a fun episode. Jewel didn't like the dress. It was difficult to get in and out of. She couldn't sit down and she needed help to go to the restroom. Mark Sheppard helped Summer get the accent down perfect. Joss wanted the show to have a darker tone, but the tv executives wanted a lighter tone.
The first time I watched this episode I really thought that Mal would use the method that Richard Sharpe used to win a duel that he was losing. Instead we get reminded that Mal is stronger because of the family he has surrounded himself with, which is at the heart of the show.
Inara is not a therapist nor a whore. She is more akin to a Geisha or courtesan. She is an ambassador. She is cultured and of high social class. But she DOES sleep with men for money and social networking. Mal strips away the frills around her sex for gain and really sees her occupation at its simplest level. But he loves her.
Jewel Staite has said that when she was given the part of Kaylee it was with the proviso that she gained about 15-20lbs., because Whedon wanted Kaylee to look like someone who enjoyed indulging herself on occasion.
The showrunners had some background in mind for Inara that explains her running around with Serenity (which really is a little odd) and standoffishness with Mal... It makes a ton of sense and there are some oblique hints at it during the season but unfortunately they never got enough time to get into it and it would be a bit of a spoiler.
"I will be with the cheese or the dog", ok, I'm paraphrasing you here, but I'll be right there with you! I think we are kindred spirits! Love your reactions to Firefly!
This is the episode where the show starts getting good. Not that the episodes so far haven't been good, it's just. . . . . .well, you'll see. Can not wait for more of your reactions!
NGL, as someone with severe childhood trauma, Tourette's, schizophrenia, PTSD and Bipolar disorder, I identify really heavily with River, and that comment during the reaction stung a bit. (Not that I'm trying to invalidate how she felt. If she feels annoyed by River, that's how she feels. We can't control how we feel.)
Although Mal was mean to Kaylee when she was looking in the shop window, a lot of people miss the preamble. He was carrying a huge sack, and had already complained twice about the weight and asked the crew to keep moving. He was mean, but it's also understandable that he was tetchy.
Shindig is probably my second favorite episode. Only barely beat out by episode 8, Out of Gas. Kaylee is just adorable and I would watch an entire episode just following her at the ball while Mal causes mischief in the background.
My favorite moment was the old guy telling off the mean girls for Kaylee. And then later telling the guys to stop interrupting her because he was genuinely interested in her shop talk.

Joss Whedon has a laundry list of faults, but he's always been keen on presenting strong women on screen. He'll even use women as villains.
You didn't miss it - the nature of the cargo was never mentioned earlier in the episode, so the fact that it was cows was a surprise to everyone. :)
It also really helps with the world building! Just what's going on that smuggling a herd of cows is worth it to a member of high society like that?
@@Stlaind It's space and exoplanets, and resources are tight. Fresh food (strawberries) would be an absolute luxury for anyone stuck on those protein rations. Those ration bars provide all the nutrition, but I would imagine it tastes bland, if not horrible. You'd pay anything if you can afford it.
The beginning of the next ep is a continuation which shows the delivery of the cattle.
@@howardbeatman2820 duh. And the reactor finds that out when they watch the next episode. They've probably already done so, but this would be what they normally call a spoiler. Not much of one, but I have seen some reactors be delighted by the continuity, a comment like this could potentially spoil that. A good practise is to keep comments limited to current and previous episodes.
Oh wow, I never realised Jane Espenson was one of the Firefly writers. She wrote some great Buffy episodes.
@@irridiastarfire She also wrote dozens of episodes for Battlestar Galactica (the newer one)
Since the pilot had not aired, this had been the first time Badger was seen by viewers.
Nailed it? I mean, I love Summer and I'm not saying it's Don-Cheadle-in-Oceans-11 bad, but come on 😁
Inara's dress is actually the costume designer's wedding dress with the bodice backwards.

Kaylee's dress is the original dress worn by Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. They brought it out of prop storage. It's in the commentary on the DVDs
Mal is the definition of "chaotic good."
To a T
Definitely a rogue.
@@GoodOldGamer possibly a Trickster Rogue ?
@@warrenwiley5656 do Tricksters’ have a faith? ( or subclass maybe)
Most of the characters are some variant of "Chaotic" the exceptions being Book, Simon and Inara. Each some version of Lawful. (Depending on how much leeway you want to give Book and his backstory, and what Simon did to get River.)
Kaylee is shiny in this one. Such a fun episode. Love the bit 18:54 where she was explaining the engineering specs to her enchanted audience. :)
And the recording of the Ball's music she's listening to at the end was almost certainly given to her by one of them. She had no time to get it herself, after all.
That was my fav part of this episode. Kaylee is the best part of this series.
Easily my favorite part of the episode as well!
Mal has a heart of gold under a broken shell of faith

My mom hated sci-fi, but I convinced her to watch Firefly. I said give it four episodes and you’ll not only be hooked, you’ll be a full blown brown coat. I stand by that statement with everyone. You simply can’t watch four episodes and not become a fan.
I was hooked after 1 but every episode since keeps me hooked and excited for the next
So, what did she think of Firefly? Was she hooked like you expected?
I had kinda the same with my dad. He got hooked on the train job and said "yeah it's a western". My dad never watches new stuff but he finish the series, but didn't like the movie as much.
Just like the Expance. If anyone makes it to the 4th episode, 'CQB,' they'll be hooked for life. Although I was hooked on both shows after the first episode.
This comment needs an update. ( crying in a never getting a second session inside. )
They wrote it into this ep 😄
huh, I always thought that was kaylee's kind of effortless flirty humor
@@zippomage yes, but they were able to tossing an inside joke for/from the crew 😀
River is never acting irrationally. She has a reason for everything she does.
My favorite part is Harrow’s line: “You’ll have to rely on your winning personality to get women. God help you!”
Larry Drake’s delivery is just chef’s kiss.
Inara with the sword:
Morena Baccarrin stated, behind the scenes, she was a little disappointed that she had about 3wks of classes and figured out a bunch of maneuvers, just to be in this episode doing a simple 'dodge and counter' move. 😄
I would've liked to have scene her perform a few sword maneuvers, also. 😊
I guess her skill would have been needed in the following seasons, just like all the other subplots, but...
So she would have been the only person in a tv show or movie to actually know how to fight with a sword? Most sword scenes in media are just very funny, because the choreographies aren't exactly constructed to look realistic anyway.
Kaylee is adorable! So glad she gets to shine in this episode.
I love Kaylee! She is the best
Totally! Kaylee is the heart and soul of the crew and must be protected at all costs.
@@VerticalBlank Absolutely! Plus Serenity couldn’t do without her.
Hands down, my favorite line from the show overall is Kaylee’s line when Mal tells her that’s the buffet table.
“Well, how can we be sure if we don’t question it?

And of course it's consistent with her character, see her reaction to Book's gift of strawberries.
@@elvwood Totally keeping in character. Kaylee’s the best. She’s like the only unjaded one onboard, then I think next would be Wash. Those two get the goofy at the drop of a hat. It’s great.
I'll be honest, the "I guess I'm just a good man / well, I'm allright" thing might be my favorite gag in... anything, ever, so I appreciated you laughing uproariously at it
Firefly really is lightning in a bottle.
Shiny.
I would absolutely watch a sci-fi comedy called, “Mean Girls on Other Planets.”
Yes, there's eventually a hat in Jayne's future, and it's (now) iconic as well as awesome! Don't worry Angela, you'll know it when you see it! 😉
My favorite part of the episode is when Kaylee is being introduced with her full name and shows to the party! It makes me feel so happy every time :)
It's a big difference between respecting a person for who they are and respecting what they do and it's a great peek into Mal's view of the world.
EDIT: It's really important to pay attention to what River says as nothing is throw away lines, she's just referencing things that haven't happened yet.
That's not always true. Sometimes she's referencing things the crew (and the audience) aren't aware of yet ;)
I really appreciate that your channel actually includes your thoughts and feelings on the show. This is the type of reaction I find fun to see, not just a person's face on screen for a bit and then they sign off and don't actually engage. You earn my thumbs up, no question.
It helps that she's very sharp and observant
@@alex0589 Right. I watch quite a few reactors, but there are only a few others that I feel the need to watch through more than a few minutes of post show commentary.
@@hkpew The reactions that end right when the reaction does are a little disappointing to me. I don’t expect someone to spend half an hour covering the episode (or movie), but I would like at least a couple minutes to cover the things they liked/didn’t like, interesting themes within the film or the characters/actors they enjoyed or disliked etc.
“Use of a Sw-What?” One of best throw away jokes ever. Favorite moment. “We’ll….I’m alright” love the reaction.
River's conversation with Badger is a fun way to give Badger's history while also signifying there is something more to River (than just damaged). Lots of dual purpose dialog and scenes in Firefly that give information without being dumbed down and obvious.
Ahh, Firefly with rosé. We have reached peak Expanse levels already. Oh, you're a browncoat already and I love it
I enjoy the contrast here of the old school versus new school aristocracy.
I really enjoyed getting to see Kaylee have fun and show off her winning personality and smile in this episode. ❤ 🎥
And her technical know-how! 👩🏫
Buying that dress was a very nice gesture. That ship is barely surviving and every penny is precious.
It was on Badger's money.
Gods, I love baby Browncoats. Glad you're enjoying this. 😊
River is a character who's depth and complexity is revealed in time.
This episode highlights the differences between the social classes in the Firefly Universe. You will notice that Badger is very focused on his social standing and he is the catalyst that ties the story together. Mal's feelings for Inara combined with his disapproval of her career choice is also a strong component to the story.
*In the scene where Mal insulted Kaylee:*
Kaylee is very vocal about Inara's glamorous lifestyle as she admires the dress.
*"Sad little king of a sad little hill"*
Somehow, the "unstable" River knew how to handle Badger better than the rest of the crew could.
Your glee at seeing Kaylee enter the ball was awesome to see 😊
Given your reaction to David in The Last of Us, I’m not surprised to your reaction towards Atherton. Always gritted my teeth whenever I rewatch this episode.
Shindig is one of the best episodes but the other bests are still coming, so excited to see your reactions to them :)
Regarding River (not a spoiler, just a detail from this episode that takes a frame by frame to notice): She wasn't tearing labels off at random, and not from every can. The torn ones had a commonality.
Let's say it: they were manufactured by the Blue Sun Corporation. Remember "hands of blue?"
@@Caseytify For someone so early into the series, I was being intentionally vague. Getting into detail would serve zero purpose, given that it depends on information only learned well after the show ended.
@@Caseytify why would you say that? It’s kinda a spoiler until she gets further.

It's funny to think how bored these old men probably were on that party before Kaylee arrived
For anybody that has something fundamentally wrong with them, & _isn't_ already in love with Kaylee, this episode not only puts her atop the list of people you'd save (no matter what) - But you'd sacrifice everybody else on that list to do so.

Thank you! You have no idea of how many reactors looked at the title "Shindig" and had NO idea of what that meant.

"I love Kaylee's room!" They wanted Serenity to be a character in the show. Have you noticed the colors and decor reflect each person? The did so many little things... damn, it was such a good show. So envious you get to watch it for the first time. I'm living vicariously through you.
Again, an amazing reaction. One of my favorite episodes. You're catching a lot of the great little details which is fantastic.
That reluctance is explained later. In short (to avoid spoilers), she has to make the first move.
The Jayne::Amos comparison is on point. Reading The Expanse, I kept saying "their Jayne is better than our Jayne."
Like so many other series since, they took a lot of inspiration from Firefly.

I wait with great anticipation till you watch each episode. Thank you for doing this series. You definitely rock!
"Time to switch to sheep" lmfao 😂. That was totally unexpected and hilarious.
“There’s a hat coming up in my future”. You have no idea.
companion is a whole package, she is well educated in every subject sex, love, passion, as well as therapy. there is a academy for companions .
How about "savage" then?
The phrase that comes to mind is "irredeemably savage."
Out of gas is probably my favorite as well. This one probably ties at second with Arial.
The funniest part of watching firefly reactions is hearing "this episode was my favorite so far" after every episode 😂 becaus the episodes do indeed get better the more you watch!
This ia an insanly tight show, it's practically a 10/10.
"Time to switch to sheep." Ok that one had me laughing for a solid 15s
Nathan has never escaped his new nickname Capt. Tightpants since this episode. Kaylee has her dress and Jayne has his hat. See a pattern here?
The first time I watched this episode I really thought that Mal would use the method that Richard Sharpe used to win a duel that he was losing. Instead we get reminded that Mal is stronger because of the family he has surrounded himself with, which is at the heart of the show.
Inara is not a therapist nor a whore. She is more akin to a Geisha or courtesan. She is an ambassador. She is cultured and of high social class. But she DOES sleep with men for money and social networking. Mal strips away the frills around her sex for gain and really sees her occupation at its simplest level. But he loves her.
Companion is a direct translation of “Heteria”, the highest class of prostitute in Classical Greece.

Although Mal was mean to Kaylee when she was looking in the shop window, a lot of people miss the preamble. He was carrying a huge sack, and had already complained twice about the weight and asked the crew to keep moving. He was mean, but it's also understandable that he was tetchy.

"Man, she comes off as annoying."
Nice.
*stab* "Guess I'm just a good man"
*stab* "Well, I'm, alright"
Still the best moment of the show for me.
I cant wait for the serenity reaction shes going to love it
you definitely need to get yourself a brown coat.
Welcome to the ranks.
You nearly made me spit out my drink at "Time to switch to sheep"...
Shindig is probably my second favorite episode. Only barely beat out by episode 8, Out of Gas. Kaylee is just adorable and I would watch an entire episode just following her at the ball while Mal causes mischief in the background.
Out Of Gas is my favorite episode as well, followed closely by War Stories.
@@garylane6227 War Stories hurts. Definitely a contender.
@@KesinX What I love about War Stories is how it builds Mal's, Wash and Zoe's characters.
