That's definitely an Asian giant hornet, not some common American ground hornet. If you live in America and see these in your yard, that's bad. Just don't confuse this with the largely harmless European giant hornet, or the cicada killers.

European hornets have a yellow head, yellow and black abdomen, and reddish thorax. Asian giant hornets have an orange head, orange and black abdomen, and black thorax. I had one buzzing around my back porch, sucker must of been 2 inches long. I went to let my dogs out, thankfully they didn't get out the door before I saw it.
These are all over Granville county North Carolina. Had em in my chimeny no bee or pest person would even dare to go near them. At night they'd try to eat into our house around doors and windows they're 2 in or longer

Northern giant hornets have only been confirmed in Washington State. Tennessee does have both the European hornet and cicada killers, both of which look similar.
In the UK they don't have Asian giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia) they have the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) which is also a large hornet, but smaller than the giant hornet.
I think some of the reports are saying “giant” but it’s just the big ones, not the “giant” ones. I’m out just now so doing this on my phone. I also may have seen giant and not properly checked it. I’ll treat all as giant and run as fast as my wee legs will take me! I saw these back home in korea, in US there no such hornet this size... its about 3 times bigger...google giant hornet hunting other hornets

This is definitely Vespa mandarinia as proven by DNA testing. The size of the hornets can vary, workers generally being smaller than the queens.

Based on the strip color (yelow black) its definitely japanese hornet, chinese hornet is full black except the head
