The Vikings had a lunar calendar which means they counted the months from new moon to new moon or full moon to full moon. The word month is actually still referred to as the moon in Scandinavia, which in Danish and Norwegian is called måned. The Viking calendar reflected the seasons: How high the sun was in the sky, access to food and fertility. The year was divided into two equally long periods - summer and winter. A person's age was counted in the number of winters he or she had lived. The Germanic peoples adapted the system introduced by the Romans by substituting the Germanic deities for the Roman ones (with the exception of Saturday) in a process known as interpretatio germanica. The date of the introduction of this system is not known exactly, but it must have happened later than AD 200 but before the introduction of Christianity during the 6th to 7th centuries, i.e., during the final phase or soon after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. This period is later than the Common Germanic stage, but still during the phase of undifferentiated West Germanic. The names of the days of the week in North Germanic languages were not calqued from Latin directly, but taken from the West Germanic names.

I am new to this channel, I've always considered myself an atheist, but when I was younger I ran almost full tilt into a lamppost and knocked myself out, I swear I saw a man walk past us with a spear, but none of my friends saw him. Was years and years ago before I even knew anything about the pagan religion. So it's always been in the back of my mind when I did start learning about it. Still consider myself an atheist, but if I was to believe in anything... This would be it, and I love these videos I found on your channel, you gained yourself another Patreon.

I've been a pagan for almost 30 years but I still usually tell people that I'm atheist, mostly to avoid dumb personal questions. I don't see the gods as actual people or the myths as literal, so I'm not even lying. ❤

The calendar is great. That must of taken quite a bit of time and effort to design. I love, and greatly appreciate, that you've listed all of the things 'to do' for each of the holidays/events. Thank you for your efforts Lucas, it's a wonderful design and thank you Michael, for doing all of the research and producing it as well. 🙂

Thank you so much this is really interesting and I’ll try to follow this calendar the next year around. Maybe you can make a video series out of it where you explain every holiday short like this like a week before the holiday comes so we can make preparations.
Also what id like to see is the mythology in the year cycle. You spoke about baldrs death and rebirth. Maybe there are other stories we can pin to a specific time of the year. This would be really interesting and deepen the understanding of the holidays. Thank you so much for your help

The thirteenth month is quite a pain in the A55. lol. I have only seen astrological additions. They did a placement towards the end of November and first weeks of December. Using the Milky Way & a Roman constellation I can’t remember the name of. Coolest thing about that 13th month is there is an alignment with the center of our galaxy, earth and the Milky Way; which my b-day happens to fall in.
Congratulations on the completion of a very complicated & difficult task. It is beautifully done and everyone involved has my gratitude & admiration for the hard work put into recreating this for the modern day understanding of the cycle. Bravo💚

His calendar probably lines up with Robert Sass' calendar. He has a website and YT channel that explains all the days for this year and the year to come. Search for Aldsidu Saxon Heathenry and you will find him. Also, Robert is close friends with Scott T. Shell, who did an interview with Thor (Norse Magic and Beliefs) and Scott did an interview with Robert Sass on his YT channel.

Hej! Fantastiskt kul att se dina videos:),
What do you make of the old swedish trad of going "påsk-kärring". One of the days leading up to easter, maby 'skärtorsdagen' when I was young in the 80's we children still dressed up like witches, dress, makeup and all, but not scary and went trick or treating. Today I do not think kids do this any more.

Thanks for the effort put in, I've been trying to do this myself for some time, but I got a little down when I wasn't even sure whether the year started on new or full moon.
Maybe some day I will find a good source to support either choice. Maybe from a bit later and such, supposed 'christian' times are still full of old heathen customs.

Awesome man thanks so much for this! I paid for my shipping but unfortunately; I'm in NZ so it's all reversed! I was wondering if you could make a poster version for us down in the south? That way you could just print them to order and not waste resources. Cheers! Just watched right through and you said you will be doing a digital version. I'd still love a flag/poster but I'd be happy with southern digital calendar. Hopefully it's not too hard; just switching some dates and colors. I don't actually know how big your audience is down here.

Other reconstructions exist, in which the months start at new moon. Has more sense when comparing it with other pre-christian indo-european ones: in Roman pagan calendars, both Romulus' and Caesar's, had their months starting at new moon, and the Vedic calendar started at new moon aswell. With the new moon of every month Romans marked the Calendas, a holyday in which the Lars (household deities) were worshipped to have their protection for the month, so defining where the month actually starts if either new or full moon is very important. Considering that the day cycle starts with darkness (sunset) I find it more logic that the original germanic one started the month in darkness aswell with the New Moon so I'll keep with that reconstructed model

The Old Norse lunar calendar, is different in that each month begins right at each full Cecefef... The correct way to align it is last or 13th month Moersugr, Hunting, begins at the closest full Cecefef to Yule; the next or numerically First Month (best) is Thorri, which refers to the goddess Vanadis. 13th months is created when one makes the 12th Sildhemanudur, cold month. Haust as in Haustmanudhur means the herb Kava Kava.... the present month therein is Einmanudhur, which refers to Terseness, people not wanting naturally to conversate a lot. Norse old language is in the Third Best category of languages for us, along with Swedish, Greek and Bulgarian; the Second Best are Welsh, Danish and French; German and Irish are in a First or Second Best category; surest First Best is Scottish Gaelic. In the lowest, worst category is English, Dutch and Finnish next worst- that is why I recommend a language change Rezefede, finding our true race path; attracting a race blessing and energy... Rezefede Thecwyevekw'

Wouldn't it be clebrated maybe at full moon (this year for example on 5.5.2023) Same with Skóklafallsdagr/Pinse: How does it fall on June 9th instead of being anchored at some moon? I'm very curious for the answers to these questions.
