I grew up in Clayton when there was 1 stop light & 2 stop signs. I worked at Dillard House when i was 14 . Back then most of the food was grown and raised on the land.
All that lands going to be houses/developed: it was sold. Heard that back in spring. I live over the line in nc and go down to eat at blue hound bbq and flea market there. Some outfit from atlanta is what I heard.
@cumberlandquiltchic1 - investment firm paid 50 million and they are going to put another 50 million into it. I lived in Franklin for a year before moving across the country. I have not been back in 47 years. Times were different then & I really miss those days when everyone knew each other.
@HidingFromStupid Thank you for the information. You remember the good ole days for sure! The GA road between Clayton and franklin is like an interstate, it’s 4 land and lots of ery bad accidents. Im very careful, or go back roads when I go down there. Tourists come through that way up through here to go to GSMNP etc . Im looking at selling my home and moving more rural. I can sell no problem, but replacing it is the problem. I’ve been looking elsewhere. I sure hate the thought of leaving these mountains, but I’m being pushed out. Rising insurance (going to be worse now due to Helene), taxes, terrible medical care (6 months for appointment , they say go to walk in and it’s full so they say go to ER. Doctors keep leaving), etc. im over it. Now to find a place to move to… all the neighboring states are high too and in demand, the new Florida.
@cumberlandquiltchic1 I was born in Miami. Moved to Clayton when I was 10. Finished elementary , middle school , and high school in Clayton. I Went to school with a girl that her father owned the Mountain where Sky Valley Ski Resort is built on. Her and I would ride our horses all thru them mountains. I remember when we lived in Mountain City ( between Clayton & Dillard ) My mother would send me just over the line to by her smokes because they were cheaper in NC. She would pack me a Sandwich & a Whelches Grape soda and I would head out after breakfast. I would buy her a carton for $2.60 and head back. I would stop at Dillard house Stables to water my horse & eat my sandwich. No real crime back then. The police station was like a shed on the corner of Main street across from the fire station. If you were drunk , cussed in front of a woman , or some other small crime , they would handcuff you to the flagpole in front of fire station sometimes for 3 days depending on what you done. I remember going to eat pizza with my grandfather and the mayor. After we went back to the Mayor's house and he and Grandad drank Moonshine and gave me a little , I was 12 then.
I used to go there with my parents. When I was a newlywed I went there with my spouse. There was a pretty piece of land behind the stable and we took a little horse ride after lunch. The farm boy who was leading my horse ran ahead a bit on the trail and came back with a bouquet of wildflowers for me. So sweet. This was in 1976.
Love it! This is like the restaurant my MIL worked at for years. Family style where they bring the dishes to you. This one is kind of fancier place. Hollyhock Hill, Indianapolis, IN. This place looks even better with the various dishes. Yummy in yhe tummy ❤
Looks like good home cooked food...reminds me of THE LIGHTHOUSE RESTAURANT in the Sulphur Well community in Metcalfe County, Kentucky .....I'd sure love to visit this place, too
The family sold the restaurant and is being renovated into something different. I hope it doesn’t change but I expect it will.A spa is being added also.
@WeAreForeverDreaming Used to be real good back in the day kinda like the Dillard House everything served family style and they keep it coming. Nice channel just subbed
Been so many times when my family traveled up from Florida and stayed in our cabin at Christmas. Last Christmas I traveled with my daughter, husband and grandsons for Christmas. It had been many years but I treated them to Dillard House for dinner. Always had great memories but we were very disappointed this time. Sadly it will be the last time. 😢
I been hearing about mixed reviews. I used to take my mother there for Mother’s Day, she always enjoyed it. I have heard they have sold the property and plan on closing the restaurant. Thanks for checking out our channel. Danny & Donna
Yes we’ve heard about the sale, I guess we’ll see what happens. We have a couple of videos coming out about the Smith House so hopefully you subscribed, Thanks for watching our channel. Danny & Donna
I enjoyed the family style of the meal even though it really was a lot of food! I agree it wasn’t great. Thanks for viewing and commenting! -Danny and Donna
I ate there once as a kid many years ago. I remember leaving hungry because I didn't like anything. I didn't grow up eating Southern food like that. Bad memory
This place is not the same as it once was. we was very disappointed in our last trip and many of our friends share the same opinions. I don't think it's packed much anymore.
You said that the restaurant is ALWAYS packed? I see more empty tables that occupied tables? After awhile most restaurants get lazy and cut corners, looks as if this is what happened here! When food comes out really quick that means the food was already cooked when you arrived!
We got there right when they open to beat the crowds and it’s slower in the off season. I do believe the foods are prepared earlier and maybe held in back on service lines. I really don’t know but the food was hot and delicious. Thanks for checking out our channel. Danny & Donna
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 Yes it's sold but new owners are spending millions to renovate and improve everything. No homes are being built. After John Dillard died 10 years ago, his wife wasn't enthused to keep the business running the way it needed and she wanted out. It was officially sold about 4 months ago. 3 or 4 generations of family have ran the business and their name will remain on the sign, but the family ownership has officially ended. The building holding the dining room was gutted for remodeling last month. All the hotel rooms will be remodeled and added onto. A botanical garden, spa, pickle-ball court, swimming pool, and some other things are coming to the property, too.

Wow they bring the food fast! And that's like a buffet at your table 😮. Gotta be good food to get packed like you were saying. 🍻
It was fast service. When my mom was alive she always wanted to go there for Mother’s Day, the wait in line was always over an hour to get seated.
Always liked the Dilliard House but loved Laprades on lake Burton.Great cooking
We have eaten there too. Blue Canoe is good also.

The roads are fun to drive, thanks for watching our channel.

My in-laws were from Toccoa, Ga. They always talked about wanting to return to this restaurant. I hate paper straws too. 🤢
Thanks for watching.

The family sold the restaurant and is being renovated into something different. I hope it doesn’t change but I expect it will.A spa is being added also.
I haven’t heard that. I know they emptied out the gift shop and said it was being renovated. Thank you for the information! - Danny and Donna

So, the Dillard House is a Mexican restaurant now?? Just asking. Haven’t been there in many many years!
