Before anyone gets on my case about my $10 Home Depot Piers.. I had no choice! I wanted to build! It's only temporary.. Once we thaw out, I'll be pouring 4' deep sonotubes with post bases to hold it all up. Surely, people wont read this and get on me about it not being overbuilt.
Such a joy watching a pro at work. And super laidback too, no over the top "hi guys!!!" crap so many youtubers throw at us. Will be following this series closely. Thanks Matt!
We’ll be doing something similar with our solar kiln build. Seeing you get it done in the snow and mud is motivating! Always love the tips and tricks from the king of banging himself!
Matt, thank you from the bottom of my heart!! These videos are so rewarding to watch, been following since a while now and you only do better and better! Also you encourage me to build my own house so I’ve been gathering tools and finally this january will start my own adventure…. keep doing it man we need more people like you; humble, inspirational and knowledge sharer!!
Such a great series, thanks for this Matt. Much respect for pivoting / pushing through adversity. It's relatable and enabling. Makes me feel less crazy knowing it happens to a pro like yourself.
Love the idea of real estate, especially knowing what I know. Have to push through and make it work, I’ll learn more on this house than any other I do.. I’m sure of it.
@MattBangsWood Crazy how the real estate world keeps getting drastic changes on how the entire process is done like what you mentioned at the beginning of this video where the buyer now has to foot a fee for paying for their own agent same with the seller. My guess is the crooks out there force those changes. Unless it's only just in the PNW area.
“Your witnessing greatness”. Haha! Yes brother! As a contractor/ home builder in South Dakota, I couldn’t agree more. You know the math, and how it should turn out, but when it actually does…. It’s a miracle, and you feel validated!! Nice work!
Matt- I’m a 21 year old contractor in Colorado and one of my first builds was a 40’ connex box that I turned into a small home. I’ve seen wicked builds on Instagram with multiple contained stacked on top of eachother with glorious interiors- not this one, it was very simple and cheap. I live in it atm but plan to Airbnb it when I move out, don’t know if it’s something you’d be interested in but the overall cost was about $25k (land not included). Could make for a fun series after this one’s wrapped up
My next one’s an off grid cabin - but I’m always interested in seeing how people do things! Can you send me an email with what you did? Mattbangswood@gmail.com
I thought it interesting you were building an 10x14 shed. I started one last March , formed up a 10 x14 footing for concrete and poured it with my son. Spent the next 8 months stick building it. I even did my first rake wall after watching your series on building, not your average shed, you videoed. It turned out exactly like the shed that was taken down by a huge white oak three years earlier. Not bad for a 77 year old meatcutter in Oregon.
10x14 is the golden number! Glad my rake wall videos helped out, they’re easy once you get the hang of it! I’d love to see it, if you wouldn’t mind sending me an email. Always enjoy looking at other people’s projects! Mattbangswood@gmail.com
Best vid of all time straight up! You made it look chill but for sure that was more like an episode of survivor man. Reminds me of projects growing up in Massachusettes, but with less F bombs. It looked soooo chaotic with all the mud going on in those footers. Took it like a champ! Takes vision and grit to pull phases through weather and conditions like that. Good Job.
I had to do a pretty rough fix before on a shed. Was contracted to build a shed, hired help for the day because I was on another job. Got to the site the next morning and concrete peers, posts, and outer frame was set. Measured it out and they built it out at 11'6" instead of 12' wide. The quickest fix I could think of was to build out each side with structural screws and stacked 2 boards to each side to make up the additional 6" I was short. It was strong, and once the shed was done you never would know. Little extra in material, but it saved time. Can't say I'd hire them again lol the reason it was only 11'6" is they poured the peers in the wrong spot, so the brackets were already approaching the edge of the peers. So my easiest alternative was to build it out.
Loving your new content. It was fun to watch you build in sunny So Cal., but since we live in cold and rainy PNW it was great to see how you pivoted with the weather.
I also noticed the plate on your truck. Welcome to Michigan man. It’s honestly a great state. You ever need to take a break and go fishing hit me up! Loving the series, can’t wait for 3.
This is exactly how I did my tiny 16 ft x 24 ft 2 story home addition. We set it up temporarily on 24" 6x6 post and 4x12 inch concrete blocks and framed from there. While still going in covid and prices were through the roof we decided to wait a little and save up enough money to pour all massive 36x36 inch by 36 inch tall concrete pier base. It took us a while but I can't judge you. I bet it's cold af and that rain and mud ain't helping for shiiid😂
Bro building and recording at the same time but be tedious! Appreciate the effort that goes into making these videos. A lot of value here. Looking forward to the rest of the build 🤙🏻
Building and recording is one thing, but doing it in the snow, rain, mud and 35° temps has sucked.. being completely honest.. No camera overheating though, so that’s a win!
Since we can't do the polished concrete anymore.. What should we do on top of the subfloor? A. Epoxy Pour Over Subfloor B. Cheapest LVP C. Match LVP in House I've never poured Epoxy but I'd give it a shot! Matching LVP seems easiest.. What should we do?
What ya saved in concrete could be epoxy pour but I don't know what epoxy on wood floor is like; longevity, potental snafu's etc. Epoxy might be the razzle dazzle tho, for the missing polished concrete ya wanted.
Based on the changed circumstances, I'd go with option B: go with the cheapest LVP flooring instead since you're going to tear it all down once it thaws out where you are and change the foundation footings to proper 4' deep sono tube piers.
Nobles or a muck style winter grade are good for winter snow yuk work. Other than that whites or hoffmans are pretty good hiker style cold weather. Gloves? All gloves suck for work lol.

Thanks for what you make on your channel. I have learned so much about framing from your channel. I have a question about "temporary" about how long would a structure be fine like this with regular maintenance. I live in an off grid area and would love to have a foundation as simple as this.
Also, throw a french drain in there unless you're gonna grade the water out from under the shed. Otherwise you're gonna have mold under it forever 😂 You're getting into full Project Management now 😂😂
I’m going to grade around it, French drain goes down that side of the house so I’ll find a way to navigate it! Pain having to switch designs mid start.. 😂
Yes! This is the series I've been waiting for. I have a question though, did you consider using camo blocks instead of the piers? They're supposed to be the newest technology for something like this.
I haven't used them yet but there's some TH-camrs that have used them in their builds for sheds and decks. It serves the same purpose as a pier but it's the latest technology and is supposed to be much better. You can buy them at Home Depot. Please do a shed or deck build with that too down the line, that would be awesome.
Our flooring inside the home is something like $6/ft. Would only be $750-1,000 for flooring in the studio. Likely blow out my budget, but could be worth it?
@ I’m in upstate NY so not sure if this translates to Cali, however we are three weeks into a new build and decked with the Advantech X-Factor. Stuff is legit.
Hi Matt, love your videos and the new build series, I’m a 50 year old framer in Michigan, isn’t the snow n mud fun? Just a normal thing for us lol, just curious couldn’t you just drop the beams and frame your deck on top of them, then you could have cantilevered it to make your floor to your desired width? Was wondering since it was a shed really, anyway keep up the awesome work n channel!
Reason I couldn’t drop beams and run it that way would be I’d need those post bases level with each other. Considering I dig for footings, my bottom of footing wasn’t level nor perfect, at all. I thought about it, but the amount of digging involved in the snow wasn’t on my priority list.
13:38 your neighbors retaining wall is failing into your property. That will be a tight space to get into later to repair between your studio. If the wall doesn’t have weep holes for drainage they could possibly drill some in now, If hydrostatic pressure is the reason for it leaning. Unless this is an illusion of the camera I can’t see as well as someone being on site.
Kinda nice to do something for yourself sometimes. And not everybody blowing up your phone. If you can make money framing you can do just aboat anything.
Regardless of opinions that are coming from basement dweller's armed with a computer but to people that know what's up your a flawless as can be craftsman I build two stories on those deck blocks where I live😂😂😂
Just wondering why you used sds hex screws to install your joist hangers instead of a flat head screw? Is this intentional to allow for expansion in your joists or….?
How do you get the ends of the studs to line up on both sides of your top and bottom sill plates? I also have trouble replicating lengths... so if my 2x4's are supposed to be 92 1/2", i could be as much as an 1/8" off on one, a 1/16th on another... it is frustrating! I have a nice dewalt dws-770 miter saw with an upgraded (add on) kerf line projection. I think my problem is I just don't know how to accurately mark the wood and what to cut on? I see a lot of people use carrots, or partial check marks... I just use little straight lines. :/
1/8” off on studs isn’t enough to worry about, 1/4” and a fingers gap I’d worry. I buy precut studs so I don’t have to worry about it, they come cut down to my 92-1/4”. I will say that I always cut the same, I take the line in every cut I do. If you take the line on one, leave it on the next, you’re an 1/8” off there. It’s framing though, make it close. Keep on going! 🤝
Too cold, concrete doesn’t cure in the cold without a bunch of additives, warm water, accelerator, insulation under.. It’s too much for what I wanted to do.
If it's going to be climate controlled inside you can LVP, if not, I'd be worried about it shrinking a lot more than you think. Epoxy over subfloor is kind of the same situation, the subfloor is going to move with moisture changes and gonna crack at the tongue and groove. I think the best bet is either insulating under the subfloor somehow, even witht he 1" foam sheets just to get LVP down.
Smart response - I appreciate this. I do plan on closing up the floor system underneath with insulation. It’ll be climate controlled inside as well. I’m also going to be honest.. part of me wants to clean the subfloor, sand it and stain it. I’m a carpenter, after all.
@@MattBangsWood Lol. I'm a luxury PM up outside Seattle. So the PNW builds are my thing. Being that you're always coming inside from a gravel/dirt/grass area it would probably be best to keep it LVP for easier cleaning as you won't have a mudroom for a wood floor. Or even just tile/lvp a 3x3 or 4 entry for your shoes. You're gonna be hiding out there editing and chilling, so make it cozy. If you ever wanna spitball ideas I'm always available! Also make sure you leave enough room for a couch and the doggo until you build him a Modern Dog house 😂😂
@@MattBangsWood ahh, cool. Having graduated in Architecture at Cal Poly I enjoyed hearing about the area. Keep on, keeping on as we used to say at Poly.

How do you like the Dewalt rear handle versus the Makita? I’ve tried using other people’s Dewalt stuff but the Makita XGT has my heart. lol
DEWALT’s got more power, but more weight. Takes some getting used to.
Are you gonna put out any plans for this, incase someone else would like to try something similar?
I’m having it drawn up, it’ll be available for free. 🙂
@@MattBangsWood thanks awesome to hear. Wanted to build something similar in my back yard
i know you probably don't want to give specifics, but where in California is it located
Not in CA - PNW. Far north.
Also make sure you leave enough room for a couch and the doggo until you build him a Modern Dog house 😂😂
i thought you were located in california. does it snow there? well i would guess it does up in the north in the mountains.,.,.
I was - been slowly investing out of the area, this isn’t CA. 🏚️
Where in Michigan are you? I grew up in Detroit, lived in Lansing for 15yrs. Now I’m in Texas.
Where did you get the 4X10's?
Apparently from a tree, because they were pretty cupped.. but local yard
You live in Michigan? Noticed the license plate. Thought you were in California
Matt, when did you move to Michigan?
Hey Matt, looks like you might have to build the laundry room first haha your clothes are gonna be a mess on this project!
Laundry rooms down and out for the time being.. I ruined a few pairs of boots and my good overalls. Need more! 😅
Where are you building this at ?
House of mine out in the PNW.
@ oh hell yeah sick.
you could have done 19.2 on center to gain a joist or two
Smart! Didn't think of that.
Where in OR is this?
You are no longer in the Central Coast area?
Keep busy!
I’ve been investing out of state for years, just shooting content here.
@@MattBangsWood ahh, cool. Having graduated in Architecture at Cal Poly I enjoyed hearing about the area. Keep on, keeping on as we used to say at Poly.
Weird seein u in the snow
This is actually wild lol
In what way? 😂
