      But he did firebend his tea at the station. I don't think sieging the city would give him much insight into the serveilance Ba Sing Se employs over their own populus. I'm more inclined to say he learnt his lesson after zuko smashed the tea out of his hands back there. He's not without mistakes, but when he makes them he learns from them. Plus, the windows were fully open, he might have noticed jet. I also think he's perceptive enough to know the rocks were stolen and not just lost.

    The people of the water tribe are based on Inuit people, who do have a tan skin tone despite living in areas of high latitude. It's because of their diet and because they receive a lot of UV radiation during the summer, which the snow reflects.

    The whole Ba Sing Se arc is so genius. I love how morally nuanced the ATLA universe is. We've seen people from the Fire Nation defect and help the Gaang, Water Tribe higher-ups maintain archaic practices around gender and now the Earth Kingdom capital is corrupt. Every nation has its light and dark side and being a 'good guy' is much more about your individual choices than what nation you belong to. Book 2 is non-stop bangers from The Blind Bandit to the finale, and it's my favourite for that reason, but the Ba Sing Se arc feels like an big declaration of "oh you thought we were just a kids show?? here's some corruption, propaganda and creepy brainwashing??".

    • @karabomasibi2331
      @karabomasibi2331 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @IceMaverick13
    @IceMaverick13 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Book 2 has slowly been shedding the skin of "Nickolodeon kid's show". All of Book 1 tied back to really safe platitudes and life lessons that kids could learn about respecting people, understanding differences in other cultures, respecting different genders, etc., but it's like the writers sat down for Book 2 and said "Okay, we checked off all of the boxes for a kid's TV show that Nick set out for us, time to write an actual banger".
    This episode is where they really turn up the heat. The show isn't just black and white, good and evil, light and dark anymore. This is the episode where the long-spoken-of great city that was the last holdout against the bad guys reveals that they're _also_ bad, but in a different way - a nebulous, systemic way that you can't fight with swords, water, or stones.
    And the _best_ part of it all is that it's _still_ able to reach and be understood by kids. It's delivered in a way that children watching can still understand what's going on. It brilliantly introduces the idea of puppet states, government corruption, secret police, double-speak, and all of these very mature topics in a very digestible way.

    8:26 The Southern water tribe of Katara and Sokka have inspirations of Inuit culture. The Inuit are Indigenous people who have brown, light brown, and tan skin tones. So, it makes sense for Katara and Sokka to be tan

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for why, it’s because the magnetosphere is weaker at the poles, meaning that more energy from the sun can make it to the atmosphere. That’s why northern/southern lights occur at the poles significantly more than outside them. Because the poles are ice capped a lot of the energy doesn’t make it to the ground, but will still reach the population, hence their skin tones. That part is counterintuitive due to darker skin tones being associated with proximity to the equator and hotter climates, but it’s not always the case.

    • @6agenthawk
      @6agenthawk ปีที่แล้ว

      its not gaslighting really, theyre just straight up keeping and controlling information from the masses and threatening imprisonment/brainwashing to anyone who spills the beans, we saw a few people who clearly knew of the war but with an authority figure in ear shot they didnt say anything, so its not gaslighting that was stopping them from talking, its authoritarianism...the parallels to china and north korea are very clear

    To explain why Katara, Sokka and all other people form the water tribes have a darker skin tone. Imagine this, all the snow is white, white is essentialy the color that reflects the most light, meaning all the snow is almost acting like a mirror and you can also easily get a sunburn from it.

    • @Loweene_Ancalimon
      @Loweene_Ancalimon ปีที่แล้ว +11

      To clarify further, the polar regions get more energy from the sun for their own reasons, but because the ground is covered in snow, it doesn’t heat up. The climate being colder is intuitively in conflict with other areas where darker skin tones are associated with hotter climates.

    🤔🇵🇭 It's easier for most of us (or for all of us, but I just don't want to generalize all of us) to side with and for Uncle Iroh and Zuko than with and for Jet in this episode, because we knew who Uncle Iroh and Zuko are, what experiences and slow changes they've been through in the previous chapters, their more or less current state of neutrality in this still on-going Hundred Year War, and because they're Uncle Iroh and Zuko, two of our most beloved characters since and/or after Book 1 Water; but what if it's not the two of them, what if they're Fire Nation soldiers or other higher ranking soldiers, or military and/or armed forces officials, officers, or personnel of the Fire Nation, or what if they're Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, who all or mostly are for or working for the Fire Nation, Fire Lord Ozai, and the Hundred Year War, including for the total invasion, colonization, siege, weakening, submission, subjugation, defeat, and/or control of Ba Sing Se, the largest and yet untouched city, city-state, state, territory, area, or place and the capital of the largest nation or kingdom, in both territorial size or area and population, in the whole Avatar World - the Earth Kingdom, and for the total success, victory, triumph, and/or supremacy of the Fire Nation over Ba Sing Se, the Earth Kingdom, and the whole Avatar World, then which side we will be on, with and for?
    It's not really Jet nor still Uncle Iroh and Zuko who are the problems or real problems in their scenes in this whole episode, but the whole, organized system behind how Ba Sing Se currently works in those times under the Dai Li and Long Feng in this whole episode. The latter is the real problem.

    Ba sing seh, IMO is a separatist, authoritarian regime.
    It seems to have influences from North Korea and China.
    I don't think kitara's "tan" is a tan. The water tribes are modelled after Inuit people, so their skin is naturally darker.
    The sunlight can be very strong in places like the north/south pole, and snow reflects sunlight constantly, so yes, you could also get a tan.

    Zuko: "This kid claims we're Fire Nation soldiers, I better show everyone how skillful I am with dual swords not to raise suspicion". 🤣I know how Zuko is and it's in character, but I always find it funny. He should just let the authorities handle it. A skillful swordsman working in a tea shop does look suspicious to me.

    In retrospect, it's kind of weird that the Gaang (and specially Sokka) took the political situation of Ba Sing Se so personally.
    If it was me, I would have been like "ok Long Feng. Since you are the one managing everything, how about we talk about how you can get all the glory of defeating the Fire Nation? I don't really care about corruption or anything like that."

    • @jamesalexander5559
      @jamesalexander5559 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Sokka was trying to go for that angle initially but Long Feng dismissed his plan before he even got to say it. TBH Long Feng was probably also too upset to hear the plan since the Gaang tried to sidestep Joo Dee and by extension him within one day.

    I'm pro-Jet in this episode; two warmongers gaslighting him, one who was just robbing earth kingdom citizens, not just the rich.
    I don't support his unhealthy obsession or generally the harassment of people trying to change their lives/being so assumptive of others morality just because of whatever group they belong to.
    But in this episode I feel bad for Jet

    • @TimberlakeTigerGirl
      @TimberlakeTigerGirl ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude they literally didn't do anything to him and he attacked them without provocation. Even though they did bad things, they are trying to start a new life since it was made obvious they can never go home.
      They didn't gaslight Jet, they were defending themselves from an unprovoked attack. So he deserved to get arrested for that, not to mention wrecking their bosses shop.
