1)According to shia Caliph was chosen by prophet in maidan e ghadeer (man kinto Moula fahaza aliyun Moula)
2) self flagellation is not done to purify our body or our sins, it is done in the process of mourning and to feel the pain of grand son of prophet (hussain)

How many times have you heard a shia attacked non muslims or anyone for not practising their version of religion, nor have anyone heard them invading others lands to so called spreading islam, similarly, they wouldn't mind if you remain non muslim yet participate in their religious progressions, boko haram, lashker e jhangvi, alqaeda, taliban, isis all came from wahhabi school of thought.

Those who followed the Prophet's closest companion (Abu Bakr) became known as Sunni (the followers of the Prophet's example - Sunnah). Those who followed the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law ('Ali) became known as Shi'a (the followers of the Party of 'Ali - Shi'atu Ali).
There is no shia & sunni in Quran. Its political wing. Where you got those picture of sahabi's.

to know more about shia, I highly recommend you to read the book Al Shia wa Sunnah by Alama Ehsan Ilahi Zaheer. Unfortunately, I couldn't find this book other than urdu language. So, if you are able to read urdu, please do read it.

I like concept of self flagellation, in this way we can feel pain of others. I can't do that but I walk in 45 degrees temp in summer to feel pain and hardship of labors and common men.
