Hi. I’m 48, I’ve worked in comic shops half my life and used to spend $100+ on comics EVERY WEEK. The only American comic I’ve bought in the last 10 years or so was Alex Ross’ FF: Full Circle. Yes, I’m still alive, and yes the comic industry 100% ran me off with their garbage content.
For the record that kind of thinking only works when the people responsible and are being made to fix what they broke are forced to work under responsible adult supervision.
It sad that we have gotten to this point because DC and Marvel have just kept pushing the fail stories. They keep pushing the Tinis, Megan Fritzmartin’s and Tim Sheridans. It’s ashamed because this could have prevented if someone just said no.

It seems to me that ever since Disney and WBD really started sticking their ugly noses into Marvel and DC, things have changed and not for the better. People like Bob Iger, Kevin Feige, David Zaslav, James Gunn, Peter Safran and Tom King are to blame. And you know, every time something of theirs fails, they blame the fans that have followed this stuff since the '40s and basically tell them to stick it... No. They can stick it! In the meantime, I will be reading the stuff from the 1980's up to 2000's, when Marvel and DC were at their absolute best!
Making stories people want is a major issue, but another major major issue to overcome is there is no "gateway" for new or returning customers to walk through. Stories are written as ongoing soap operas. Readers can't jump in. They need well written single issue stories for new readers to fall in love with...also, potential new customers don't accidentally or randomly walks into a comic shop. Shops have to work on their marketing and have to actively reach out to find new customers. The publishers have to figure out a way to introduce comic books to potential customers who have never walked into a comic shop.
We also care about our LCS we just don’t like the oversexualized crap that’s being produced nowadays . I’m boycotting them… after I finish buying the old issues, hehehehe. I can’t take my kids to read the new crap. We moved to other comic companies lol 😝
The last new comic I purchased was a Capt. America issue where Red Skull was depicted as Jordan Peterson just so I can have him sign it as a LOL moment to how bad of a idea that was. After that, I've been buying Omnibus of The Boys (just finished the last issue a month ago) and Invincible, and manga. I'm slowly buying back issues because most of my comic shop don't hold what I'm looking for for my collection.
A robust back issue selection and an area for gaming is what keeps me going. I gave up on ordering new comics in December 2023. Well, not completely, I have one customer left who is getting ASM and DD, which I get from Penguin because they don't charge for shipping. I have my Diamond account to get Marvel Select figures and the occasional weird game that catches my eye. The overall plan is to shut doors June 2026, but that all depends upon the market. Retirement looks awesome.
The manga sales are actually dropping in Japan too, I watch a channel that covers the top 50 selling manga every week and sales are down from last year.
Sounds reasonable. Didn't shonen jump and maybe others give them the chance to pay subscription to read it all digital? People still buying them as much as they do, is just proof that people love physically owning the things.
Japan is in a steady decline of its population for a while. That manga in Japan is in fact a shrinking industry isn’t exactly new. BUT manga in Japan is still significantly bigger than comics in the US, despite Japan being way smaller than the US. On top of that manga is successfully exported to the rest of the world. Manga isn’t really fundamentally endangered of shrinking to a tiny niche industry like US superhero comics are.
@@davidgantenbein9362Yea also a lot of Japanese are switching to digital, so the market might not be shrinking but simply people ditching print for digital. Storing all this manga is difficult, I’m putting up new shelves every month, nearly every inch of my walls is covered in manga. So that’s also a reason why some are switching to digital manga. Comics are actually easier to store.
Considering young people are paying for student loans and anxiety medication, they made a terrible mistake trying to appeal to younger readers. Everyone's on medications and has bills to pay, so there's no excuse for pushing aside older readers.
Today I read an article that theres another mandel swap involving The Sentry. And of course a women with Cerebral Palsy of ALL things, has the mental and Physical fortitude to handle the power of a million exploding suns. And it is these type of shenanigans is the reason why I recently brought three issues of a manga title called 'Innocent' written and beautifully illustrated by Shinichi Sakamoto. A high recommend for anyone whose interested.
Same! I can buy toys of the characters I love, and it doesn’t come with any “modern writer” political agenda attached. My Iceman figure is still straight. As his creator intended.
At this point, it would take an admission of culpability, along with the sincerest of apologies for me to even CONSIDER returning to the Pig2 for my entertainment fix.
i love looking at data and many also do, and if the industry (shop/distributors/book companies) showed data you'd be surprised the new readers that may become readers, and how many already buying books would spend more times looking at comic content (much of it data) but I understand some companies don't like their exact data out for their verious reasons...
I recently was in downtown Manhattan on an errand that I needed to do. The place was closed for lunch so I decided, since I was downtown, I would visit my old LCS. After seeing the stuff that was on the racks I picked up somethings that I liked. I went up to pay for it and the person looked at me in a funny way. I caught on and said , "Yeah, Ok I think I've been here last about two years ago. She laughed and said yes. I bought about 12 books which came out to about $75.00. When I got home I realized why I haven't been there in a long time. I could have gotten many of these books for way less on the Internet. And I mostly buy old comic books that offer a better read than what's being offered by the modern writers today. Oh, I still love good comic books and I'm obviously not dead.
Not Dead yet. Have been buying back issue books and facsimile issues. At this point, that's all I wish the big 2 would produce. The confusing half-baked story lines, boring sexual politics and inflated prices for vanity projects written by poor writers will continue destroying the industry. MY own books are better written. Many thanks to Wes and the boys for their constant calling out of the many inadequacies! Saves us all tons of cash!
The comic shops I've been to they also sell games, toys, collectibles and whatnot. I remember when the main one in town was in essense pure comic book store when I was growing up till adult. Now. . . Just couple of days ago I saw that one store selling comic books that came out year ago for 50% off in four short boxes. Didn't even hold their value. I wish would Marvel would do is to sell affordable trades starting at issue 1 with X-Men. I found individual issues of the good stuff but like to read it in full. Probably make more money than what they are with the new stuff.
When the big two basically tell you to fuck off were here to tell stories no one but their friends and small group of weirdos (thats so flaky they'll stop supporting you once they get bored) give a damn about. They pushed the hardcore fans out and this is what you get. Admittedly never in a million years did i ever think i would be reading indy comics but here i am. Lol.
So if all the comics customers are dying off, then is that an admission that everything they are doing to bring this "New Modern Audiences" to comics is NOT working? Making all the characters "strong" women and gay is not bringing in the younger readers they have been aiming at? I'm glad they are finally admitting it.
Yeah. I'm still alive and did exactly like Dok (not exactly a whale, but still...) I was a X-Men and Thor buyer. But I dropped first X-MEN because I could not keep up with all monthly events and after I dropped Thor when they made him Unworthy. Gave another chance to Kinghts of X thinking that it was an else world story. It was so bad that I dropped after #2. DC, I used to still buy some Black Labels. But nowadays, not even that.
Mainstream comic books have revenue that are a drop in the ocean for the companies that own them. They were allowed to do whatever they wanted for a long time because them losing money wasn't a big deal. Now they are losing enough money and in spectacular enough ways that it has become a big deal. The thing is, those companies may have rotted to the core by now, and it will take nothing short of a total uprooting overhaul to fix things.
They need to fire everyone. They need a total house cleaning at both of the big two, and to stop producing comics for a few months, and completely reboot their lines. Come up with some hard rules for their universes, so stakes matter. Obviously, drop all of the activists nonsense and focus on action adventure again. I wish 😅
Comic fans are not dying off. Like me, a lot of them came in as kids, teens and young adults in the late 80s and early 90s when the Batman movie came out, comic shops exploded and were being covered in mainstream media, and Wizard magazine, and superstar artists who started Image Comics. A huge chunk of the comic buying population is of that time and like me, they're in their 40s. We're not dying. Like me, it was a gradual but ever spiraling disinterest as there was less and less reason to go into the comic shop every week. Eventually there were very few books we were excited about and decided we could put off picking them up. Eventually we just cancelled our pull lists and just started to go infrequently. Eventually on the odd occasion we did go into a shop we'd see names plastered on some of the books of people who called me names for not enjoying their slop and it turned me off buying anything altogether. Why would I support a company that supports it's creators treating it's customers so poorly? I DON'T! When I get treated badly at a restaurant, I boycott it and tell my friends about the experience so they'll stay away too. The same thing happened with me, my friends, and comics. There are some good comics out there, no doubt, but I can't look past the shit that Marvel and DC employees directed at me to bring myself to forgive those companies and buy anything from them. I buy maybe a couple or so graphic novels or art book per year now, and very rarely are they something from Marvel or DC, and if they are, they are old classics. The last two things I got cost more than 100 bucks, but I felt good because neither was published by the big two. One was a crowdfunded art book by a former pro artist, the other was Barry Windsor-Smith's Monsters. Unless I see some sort of statement from the heads at Marvel or DC apologizing for how they've allowed their creators to treat their CUSTOMERS and apologizing for the decline in quality of the art and storytelling (remember when you had to spend years honing your craft and maybe after a a few submissions over a few years you'd be lucky if an editor gave you a smile when looking at your work?) I doubt I'll ever spend more than a few bucks a year on a Marvel or DC comic.
Lets see. So now people are just dying out? What happen to everyone being a ism or ist? What happen to people being to stupid to understand the stories? What happen to people just hating women or anything that is not a straight white male? I swear the reasons they make up to use as a scapegoat to avoid blaming poor quality low effort books and rising prices. Oh yeah can't forget insulting the fans, refusing to listen to them at all, while still blaming the fans for the issues they created again and again. At this point, the while comic book industry will burn down, before these people admit they were in the wrong and they need to change ship. By then it will be two late. Heck even if they were to change ship now. They most likely already driven a number of people away for good. Due to investing in different things, like a manga series or gunpla.
The failure to grow the comic readers numbers when the MCU was in top form will be considered a marketing blunder of historic levels. Not just from a pop culture view but from a business/marketing case. We still talk of the video game crash of the early 80's only to come back via Nintendo. ESG was a Achilles Heel for so much in narrative culture media. Comics, Film, Television, Video Games, Table Top, etc. It's a wasteland for anyone over the age of 20. Kids have no desire for the escapism we enjoyed for decades.
I stopped reading Comics regularly like 25 years ago. Been buying the odd collected TP here and there at Dollarama mostly, all $5 a piece for collected TP's makes checking even Mediocre stories worth buying at that price. The last...15 years of that have been Really Slow as Every Story seemed to be a Rushed and Blowm out of proportion Event, Replacing classic chapter issue based Storytelling. The last 5 years have been Most Pointless for me to even get some of those because the stories Overall, save a Few Good Nuggets here and there, haven't been worth the time or money anyways thanks to the Gross Mismanagement and Runaway Hijacking of Titles and Characters for The Message, sacrificing Good Stories for more Virtue Signaling Brownie Points that Don't Buy them Anything of Value...at all. So As a Comic book Lover...my Absence doesnt mean im Dead. It Means i put More Value and Expectations on What i GET for the MONEY i Spend. If a Books Stops BEING ITSELF Amongst Creative Team Changes, then I Stop Buying it. Like, Back in the 80s and 90's, i Rarely Left a Book i liked when the Team Changed because the Consistency of Quality Story and Art etc, was STILL THERE. The CARE, DESIRE and PASSION to Tell a Compelling story With those characters Was STILL THERE. I see a Lot of Good ART WASTED on BAD STORYTELLING thats So BAD that even the ART Cannot Make the Books Worth BUYING. And they've Made ALL OF IT Into stuff For an Audience So NICHE that Most of Those in that demographic AREN'T INTERESTED Enough to BUY it Either. Its a Sad State of Affairs, Truly. And i Agree with the Assessment that they're Running Out the Clock, Riding the Corpse until it Slides to a Permanent STOP...and Then they'll be Let Go and Somehow SPIN it that it was those Pesky Macro things that Tanked it and Not THEM specifically that Did it. They THINK they're gonna Walk Away SCOTT FREE and Somehow be able to CONTINUE in the industry. Bwahahahahahahaaa!!! The FOOLS!! WHEN Marvel AND DC Comics FOLD and They Very Well MIGHT, and then get Produced Solely by 3rd Party Licensing Publishing Deals lioe the Rumored Mcfarlane DC thing where Todd essentially becomes Head pf DC Comics Publishing Division...In that SCENARIO do you Really Think Todd is Gonna HIRE ANY of these Idiots? Do you think Whoever in the same Scenario for Marvel Comics would Hire these Proven DETRIMENTAL to the BUSINESS in General People At ALL? Every One of them is Gonna Have To go INDEPENDENT Themselves IF they wanna just Stay in the Game....and When That Happens, Should it Happen, then They Will Discover Exactly How Well Liked and Regarded they Are by the Public. And Without the Soap Box of a Legacy IP Title to Carry Them...they're gonna be Done Done. And Maybe THEN what the 3rd Parties end up making will be Worth Returning for.
I say this to myself in voice like emperor Palpatine, with my fingers steepled. Every time I see Aaron on TH-cam. “Forego buying new comics Aaron. I can feel the hatred building within you. After seeing how disappointing that Ultimate X-Men Version 2.0 was, I decided that Earth-6160 still just isn't good enough as an alternate reality to read about in the Marvel Comics Multiverse. Instead, I will write my own X-Men fan fiction and continue to indulge myself in comic book super-hero characters the way that I would like them to be. I may not be getting paid for it, but at least the stories I write are a hell of a lot more entertaining than the mediocre stuff that Marvel is currently publishing. Right now, I am writing a story that is about a continuation story and/or sequel to What If...™, Volume # 1, Issue # 47, March, 1993, which is "What If...™ Magneto took over the U.S.A.?!" My imagination, my rules. Just like Thanos had said in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Fine, I'll do it myself."
It's true. The last two comics I bought from a store were from about two years ago; I just kept cutting back and back from apathy. Last comic related material I've bought in the past year were the Nausica two book hardcover, Nottingham and King of Spies. Oh, and okay, I admit I did buy a Marvel trade: Fantastic Four, The End. Which was originally published eighteen years ago (And even then it was an alternate history story).
I think the problem for comic is more and more their format. For manga and most europeen title, their production are link around a author and drawing individual or a small groupe approved by the story creator. When it is time to end a title, they are free to pull the plug and do it in a satisfying way and cohesive way, In comic, most titles are own by publisher and hammer on volume instead of quality. Several titles and character are way over due for their graves and because they sell, they stretch their agonie until the story stink so much that it hurt most of the publisher catalog.
To me, the only way mainstream comics can be 'fixed' by this point is for both DC and Marvel to be sold off and all staff from top to bottom to be given their overdue pink slips. I can easily see this happening with Marvel as Disney continues to go into free fall at breakneck speed with all their products and losing billions upon billions of dollars and they are already trying to get rid of whatever assets they can get away with. Disney has destroyed Marvel turning it into a dead brand and when it goes bankrupt, Disney is gonna be forced to sell Marvel for way less than what they purchased to handle their debts among other brands they purchased like Fox and Star Wars. With Nelson Peltz already waging war on Iger and Disney's board for the soul of the company with a manifesto he put out last week, it's only a matter of time before Marvel's fate comes into question as Disney will either die through bankruptcy or be revived with new blood running the company with the old blood purged. When Peltz takes over Disney, it's a toss-up if Peltz will keep it or sell it off as Marvel as a comic brand never mixed with Disney's philosophy on children's entertainment and magic. TLDR, the woke activists running Marvel are already on borrowed time; they will either be laid off through Disney's bankruptcy or fired under Disney's future management as they being put on the chopping block is all but set in stone. I give them two years max until the nonsense on social media and the company ends full stop.
Sorry man, not happening. They're Hollywood script farms. Cuz they would have been divested years ago otherwise. No, they'll be at WBD and Disney until those two go bankrupt. And given that Disney is STILL somehow afloat despite nearly 20 years of constant mismanagement, that's not a good bet either.
@@Slitheringpeanut With the way Disney continues to double down, screw the pooch harder, and mess with Florida, I say the bet's a good one cause it's a matter of when, not if.

I used to be at around $300. Now I’m at about $25-30. I found jumping off points and left. Started read some manga. There’s decades of great stories that actually excite me when I read them instead of rolling my eyes back in my head. I personally couldn’t justify spending the money. This stuff isn’t going to have any value and I wasn’t enjoying the writing at all. I was able to find something else and it changed my daily mood. I hope you can find something else one day too.
@@brew1234567891 I understand. Collecting comics is the one thing I do for myself. So I'm in, but I understand people leaving for sure. DC does have great books right now, it's just not as common as it should be. Marvels in real trouble though, the ultimate stuff isn't enough for me.
Great content as usual. Marvel and DC are terrible companies. Again, I believe Marvel's mission is to replace Peter Parker with a younger Miles Morales in the Earth-616 universe. This week Marvel released The Spectacular Spider-Men comic issue # 1 by Greg Wiseman. Was the "OK? Yes, but we've seen so much parity and mediocrity in the "ASM" comic, that anything seems to be an improvement. I have mixed feelings about this team-up, the 1st is my aforementioned comment Second, Is this going to overlap with the "ASM" comic? I don't think so, yet it's only the 1st issue, so we'll wait and see. Third, how many characters are we going to bring into the 616 universe? My concern is the amount of characters can become bloated as did the CW's "Arrowverse". Spoilers. Plus we had to go to a panel irrelevant to the story where two lesbians kiss. I don't remember these two characters from the original cartoon, and I thought Glory Grant got back with Kenny Kong at the dance which made Harry Osborn mad when Glory dumped him at the dance. In this 1st issue, he is with a new girlfriend and a friend of Miles asks her out, but she declines. As a kid, I liked the original Marvel Team-up running from March 1972 to February 1985, the end of the Silver Age into the Bronze Age. I don't like a team-up with the same character all the time as this comic will do. However, if Wiseman has an issue or two where Miles teams up with Kamal Khan/Ms. Marvel for an adventure, as they're going to go on a date in an upcoming issue, that would be interesting. This would be good for this comic while generating interest in the Ms. Marvel character. The same would be for Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen. They're supposed to go on a date in a future issue. It's not certain which version of Gwen Stacy this will be. As this comic states Peter is older mentioning "ASM" is turning 62 this year. Of those 62 years, I've been following "ASM" for 55 years since 1969. I was 8 at the time. I think it's time Peter became a power couple with Spider-Gwen. I know younger fans think Peter is too old for that version of Gwen, but if you bring in an older version of Spider-Gwen, it would work. His relationships with MJ and Felicia Hardy are over and I think permanently This would bring Gwen and Peter's relationship full circle. A woman who was his 1st love, but this version has Spider Powers, so they can become a power couple. I'll admit this comic has a lot of potential, but can Weisman fulfill that potential remains to be seen. We need better storywriters at Dc and Marvel. Is Weisman a step in the right direction? We shall see.

@@linusgustafsson2629Yea manga has a massive digital readership now, a lot are switching to digital.
No, some have gotten older and have to choose between buying comics or paying for medication, food, etc.
Considering young people are paying for student loans and anxiety medication, they made a terrible mistake trying to appeal to younger readers. Everyone's on medications and has bills to pay, so there's no excuse for pushing aside older readers.
Great video!
Thank you!
This is why there’s more hype for stuff like transformers and ghost machine rather than the next marvel event
Walked away years ago.
Spending my money on other things
Enjoying other things
It felt so good buying absolutely zero of the books in the blood hunt event while I was preordering my stuff....
i love looking at data and many also do, and if the industry (shop/distributors/book companies) showed data you'd be surprised the new readers that may become readers, and how many already buying books would spend more times looking at comic content (much of it data) but I understand some companies don't like their exact data out for their verious reasons...
The title just says it all Wes. The video just drilled down to a diamond.
@0:55 even that person in that picture is doing a crucifix. it's r.i.p.
Jonathan Hickman’s “East of West” is pretty dope.
Thank you Wes and Aaron
Fantastic video guys - aaron was a marksman on this Episode!
Awww, shucks! 😂
There's no more fixing at this point. Mangas and minor publishers are the future of the industry now.
Sales charts is good for media clicks, that’s why people like Heidi and Rich want them. That used to be free money every month
Lol.
I am conflicted. I want to stop buying comics but I also want to support my local comic book store.
Aaron Sparrow should be in charge.
So if all the comics customers are dying off, then is that an admission that everything they are doing to bring this "New Modern Audiences" to comics is NOT working? Making all the characters "strong" women and gay is not bringing in the younger readers they have been aiming at? I'm glad they are finally admitting it.
This is a great point.
Yeah. I'm still alive and did exactly like Dok (not exactly a whale, but still...)
I was a X-Men and Thor buyer.
Krakoa ruined the X-Men forever. They are all killers now.
Nop.
I wish 😅
Comics will never be fixed as long as you got these hack writers in charge of your franchise
Gatekeep the classics including manga HARDER!!!!!
It's not just comics it's every form of media.
only back issues
Come to Warhammer Aaron. Warhammer loves you. Warhammer needs you. Come to Warhammer Aaron. Yes, yes, good, good.”😂😂
But seriously Aaron. When are you going to go hard in the paint (so to speak) for Warhammer?
If you don’t turn to the Dark Side, maybe I’ll start working on Dok. 😂😂😂
I have some of the McFarlane figures, I’ve painted some of the miniatures… and I have a book Max gave me for my birthday, so I’m going to start getting into the lore!

But seriously, I thought I was going to have to drive all the way to the next Con you’re going to and give a box of space marines and a set of paints. 😂
Ps. See there, somebody liked your reply!

Nonsense.

Well comics are dying they're killing off customers with how bad the quality is.
I only share my #'s with you Wes.
I spend between 4 and 500.00 a month on comic books. People like me and you are the one spending this money not the three people on Twitter that yell about that weird s***. The business is simple.
By the way if Jim is scrolling through these comments peach momoko is trash.

That is Doomface, the villain from my upcoming comic KNEEL BEFORE DOOMFACE!
When do you think Heidi will age out or die off?
Comics have been fixed, or should I say spayed?
Neutered is more like it.
Bugs Bunny: Comics need MAROONS in charge, Doc.
The WRONG people are being pushed out of these fandoms smh. Heidi McDonald has to go as with many others . You have to start somewhere so let’s start with her lol smh. She is not genuine to either side, she only cares for the politics she supports and her job, and she doesn’t understand comics smh. I don’t care if she changes either she has done enough damage participating in the “whisper network” and that’s enough. Comics will NEVER come back with goofy characters like her around
