As a professional furniture conservator in private practice for over 50 years, I want to say that I was impressed with your video, your humility and the results. I started watching this video because I thought the chair was beyond repair. You did a fantastic job. I feel your pain when the crest did not fit, but you solved the problem. And I appreciate your shot of the Old Brown Glue, which I developed and now sell internationally. My best wishes for future projects.
Old Brown Glue (hide glue) would have been a good choice for the other glued joints too (but not the repairs) , rather than polyurethane. I buy it here in Canada from Lee Valley.
What a nice thing to say to him. That must mean a lot coming from a professional. I too love that he tries so many different techniques. And it is because of this channel that I have seen your product and intend to purchase some for a restoration of a chest of drawers that I have had in storage for too long.
My jaw dropped...So beautiful...so amazing...Your patience, skill and dedication have created SUCH BEAUTY from an old, sad, broken, chair to create a work of ART.
I have done furniture work for over 40 years! You performed a total miracle on this. I have restored a lot of antique furniture but this is truly amazing. You are also finishing this the right way. Wonderful job. It really looks nice. Thank you for sharing!
Jay, you are such an amazing autodidact, because of your gutsiness. I hope you keep the bow chair; it is so unique and it represents so many challenges which you met so well. Congratulations on your use of your lathe and your first spindle. The chair is beautiful.
Carrol !!! When you said the backrest didn’t fit, OMG, I expected something other than what you did!!! So proud of you, too, that you didn’t give up !!! Nor did i expect the beauty that you restored !!! Is that seat made from a burl grain ? You ARE the MAN !!!!
Jay, despite the problem with the backrest, the finished chair is absolutely beautiful! You were up to the challenge, overcoming all the obstacles. I love that you don’t quit on a project but find ways to see them through to the end.
I’m always amazed with your work and how you’re not afraid to try any technique to get the results you want. Your tool collection has really grown since your early videos too.
I’m always impressed by how you challenge yourself, and I can only imagine how disappointing it was to get to the final stage of reassembly only to find it was going to present another difficulty. It looks phenomenal. I agree with Loretta: this chair deserves the moniker Lazarus!
You sir are an example to anyone who aspires to be a woodworker. That chair was looking like a lost cause but you saw the beauty in it. It turned out so beautifully, I’m amazed. That piece will grace someone’s home for years to come. Excellent job! Love Hugo he’s adorable!
This is one of my favourite furniture restoration videos I’ve ever seen. Love it! You’ve given that old chair a new lease on life and possibly extended its life by another 150 plus years. Preserved something for another 6-7 generations is just phenomenal. Such a gorgeous result. I can see now why restored antiques demand lofty prices. Worth every cent.
WOW! I’m so pleased that you stuck with it and saved this beautiful old chair. Surely this has got to be one of the toughest challenges you’ve taken on and the result is gorgeous.
You did an absolutely phenomenal job of restoring this chair. It's beautiful. And congratulations on turning your first spindle. I'm no woodworker, but I'd say you did an excellent job of copying the original.
What a georgeous piece of furniture you rescued. I sew and knit a lot and I know from experience that because I have intimate knowledge of what I created, I see all its flaws when others cannot. This chair is that for you. You can see what we cannot. You did a fabulous job! It's beautiful. And a piece of history was saved.
That was amazing…you took something beyond repair and probably made it look better than it did when it was brand new. You have amazing skills. You are a joy to watch.
Considering what you started with, I think you did a wonderful job restoring this chair. It’s so fun to see you problem solve and try new techniques. Awesome!
As a lover of antiques , and an amature furniture restorer , l found this video absolutely amazing ! You did a wonderful jib of restoring this beautiful chair .😂 absolutely amazing !!😊
You are really a great performer! I love the way you comment and discribe your job! Thank you so much to show the world how to renovate wooden furniture! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!
I’m always impressed by your patience and meticulous detail work. I LOVE watching you work, but that new sand blasting vacuum machine is mesmerising….bliss to watch. I think this chair is one that nine out of ten folk would have thought of as drift wood and started a beach bonfire, but not you. It’s fascinating to see all your techniques come in to play. Loved this video🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have never seen a chair like this. It is absolutely beautiful. Amazing how you gave it life again. I love watching your videos!!! Thank you so much!!!
You've literally resurrected that chair from the dead! fantastic job as usual!! Impressed with your first time on the lathe. I've always wanted a go on one of those believe it or not. It's hard to believe jut how far you've come without any tuition, well done 😊
This is my first time watching your work and I’m completely HOOKED! You gave this amazing old chair new life ❤ So many today would rather throw things away than fix or restore them. I was so impressed when you indicated that there were techniques you’d never done prior to this chair…we’d never know if we could be successful if we never try, right? My husband has done woodworking all his life and I’m very much a novice. He’s been teaching me tips and tricks, and how to use the technical equipment. What a joy to watch you work! Bravo! And your kitty is a doll ❤ Thank you so much for sharing and not giving up on this gorgeous piece of history.
What an amazing job! Have you considered using a steam chamber to soften warped pieces and return them to their original shape? Great to see an old item brought back to life!
A very challenging project! Although it didn’t come together as you planned, it is now a beautiful piece of furniture and a lovely addition to any home.
"The best you could" is so extraordinarily wonderful and so much better than most. This little chair was waiting for you to come along. As for me, I like the indentations and imperfections in an old, well-used piece of furniture. I try to imagine how is was used and loved over the years. In this case, I see children sitting in it. Great job! Be proud of your exquisite work.
Another piece brought back from the dead! Nobody else would have attempted that chair, and you turned it into a masterpiece! As you add more skills into your repertoire, you will find it easier and faster to accomplish your goals. It seems that you love your new sand blaster! Your lathe work was spot on! I can't wait to see what you will do next. I know that it will be truly impressive. As always!!!
You are amazing !! This piece was incredibly difficult but you took on the project like a champ !!! Absolutely mind-blowing skill !!! Also, your tool collection is turning into a beautiful studio of woodworking tools. How your focus has changed from your early days! I am an OG viewer, and your dedication to saving old pieces is an inspiration !!!❤
Wow what a transformation Jay, beautiful indeed. You always amaze me with your talent and having a go at trying new things (wood turning) you’re a natural talent indeed my friend 😊❤️
That turned out absolutely gorgeous! Your attention to detail is just amazing. I don’t know that I ever would’ve noticed that about the back and I not watched you do it. You have a wonderful talent!
You did an amazing job on this piece. It looks absolutely beautiful for something you have never done before. I would love to see another piece that you haven't ever done before. You are such an awesome person, THANK YOU
You did an outstanding job on a piece that most would’ve thrown away. I know it didn’t end up perfectly, but you truly did a wonderful job. And kudos on the lathe work - not too shabby for your first time! 😊
It's always a pleasure to see your meticulous work and to watch you problem-solve along the way. I can hardly believe the before and after are the same chair. Well done! (Great spindle, too!)
What a learning journey! You made it look beautiful but what a process. Congratulations on your first wood turning. That is really a skill. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! What a beauty! Good for another couple hundred years. This restoration is sympathetic to the age and originality of the piece. Imperfection in a chair this age is expected and part of its history. Another great save. Well done....again.❤
Hello from California. I’m Jim. I have been enjoying your videos. I want to share that your respect for pieces and craftsmanship combined with your integrity and skill; the kindness towards four legged supervisor(s) makes viewing a joy. Thank you for sharing and for helping me learn about wood restoration techniques.
This job took a huge amount of talent, experience and determination. Luckily you are blessed with all these gifts. The chair was revived like a miracle! Beautiful job!
You are one courageous woodworker to even consider taking on this project! I think your assessment of "firewood" was spot on. The end result was truly awesome (in that word's original sense of "extremely impressive, inspiring great admiration"). Well done!
You did an excellent job with this chair. I appreciate you walking us through the process and your thoughtful explanations of why you chose to do things the way you did.
What a beautiful piece of restoration. The thing if I had tried it would never have looked that nice. Also I would like to say that for a 1st time on the lathe, well kudos to you. That piece matched really well. You sir are a man of exceptional talent.
Hi, I’m truly happy that I found your channel today. I love furniture restoration. I am unable to restore/upcycle furniture myself due to a disability… so I watch others who love and enjoy the process of bringing life back into a piece of beautiful furniture. This piece looks incredible. I’m looking forward to watching your past videos and staying tuned for future ones. Keep going… you have a talent for this.😊
I just found your channel and I'm absolutely smitten! You do such wonderful work! I could never be as creative as you are, you are constantly surprising me with how you turn these sad old items into something beautiful and unique! I LOVE that you choose to focus on refinishing the wood and very rarely paint, because as an antique lover wood is gorgeous to me!
I almost cried at the end of the video. To see what you began with and the absolutely beautiful end result brought tears to my eyes. Always enjoy your work, your humor, and the cats! ❤
I will never take on challenges of this sort, but greatly appreciate your doing so because you always share your journey and your thinking. So much of it is potentially applicable to my own little refinishing adventures.
Absolutely amazing. I certainly would've passed on this chair because the wood looked unsalvageable. Obviously, nothing is unsalvageable when it comes to your skills and determination.
Amazing display of skill, patience & understanding of the goods & materials you have to work with. This chair was firewood to 99% of people but, if the chair could thank you, it should thank you for being one of the 1% of people who look beyond what they originally see. You are an amazing man to watch as you apply your brilliant touch to yet another disaster & come up with an amazing restoration. It looks good enough for another 100 years. Hats off to you mate, cheers, Don from south Australia
Fantastic job, Jay! I admire the way that you met each challenge this project threw at you, and now you’ve taken your first “turn” on a lathe! I think you did quite well. If you’re interested, there are tools or add-ons for the lathe that enable you to exactly replicate the profile of a piece, such as the spindle. I don’t what they are called, but I know they exist. Again, great work!
Looking at the before picture and seeing the results of the final repairs, you should be so proud of your hard work. You turned this piece back to its former glory. If you had not taken this on, the chair would have ended up truly dead. You gave it back its life and, for that, you should be praised. Kudos to a job very well done!
You should call this chair Lazarus because you resurrected it from the dead.
😂😂
I like that comment. I have to agree, it’s now the “Lazarus chair”
Indeed! 😊
I totally agree! 😅

Just curious. You seem to be in England. Did you source your OBG from Workshop Heaven?
