This was such an awesome shoot - we ran out of water so everyone got sun-stroke, myself included, and found a nice cold slab of marble to sleep off the effects at the airport. As for the drag race is was full on genuine and I was pulling for the McLaren big time. It belonged to Rowan Atkinson and I promised him to only make two full on clutch launches off the line. Turned out we only needed one and it was a cracker, just a hint of wheelspin and it stole a march on the Bugatti which wasn't appreciating the heat and it lost some grunt off the line. But... it eventually overwhelmed the Mac with brute force. The biggest concern at the time was the the cats eyes might blow a tyre on the Bugatti at over 200mph but it was never an issue. The F1 was special - it had soul and panache - the dials were old school and modern at the same time. A proper car, with a throaty bark and a unique driving position that felt like a throne.. good times.. Stay Speedy folks, cheers Ben - now filming over @ FastFood

It's just top gear going by the script . There is no way a Bugatti will lose to a McLaren F1 during the start . Bugatti is a all wheel drive 1000 hp with all the torque . It's just a script.
Actually, the McLaren F1 is as reliable as a Camry although it may not seem like that. So I was watching a video where Gordon Murray was recalling a conversation he was having with a German owner who used to daily his McLaren to his office and he used to drive it daily on the autobahn but he never had any issues with the car. It is because the car ha so little that there is nothing to actually go wrong. Also, an almost unmodified McLaren F1 won the 24 hours of LeMans. So despite the reliability issues which most British cars suffer from, the McLaren F1 is not one of them.
I'm a HUGE McLaren F1 fan and I'll do anything just to get near it but the race was staged, Bugatti has faster acceleration and 4 wheel drive and more, F1 won't win sadly...
@@jklinn570Not modern technology, but modern automotive engineering. There is a difference. Modern cars are cars with ECUs. Distributor engined cars are not modern nor carbureted engines - even if they still make them.
@@jklinn570 it is. It didn't any electronic aids because that was the driver could feel what the car was doing better. It's a naturally aspirated V12 engine from the 1990s, and it kept up with a turbo charged w16. McLaren F1 simply optimised the power it had, it was never made to be a hyper car

That McLaren is absolutely insane. Let’s not forget that it’s naturally aspirated and still put up a good fight against the quad Turbo W16 engine. Unbelievable
True it was a massive leap forward for performance cars when it came out the fastest road car money could buy was the jaguar XJ220 which was tested to a top speed of 217 mph and up till then the top speed of supercars had gone up in very small increments of 1 or 2mph for example the Porsche 959 was king at 199mph and then came the Ferrari F40 at 201, then it was 205, 207, 212 and then up to 217, the McLaren's top speed of 240 mph was a leap forward that didn't just take the crown from the jaguar, it made the jaguar look positively sluggish, almost everyone who drove a McLaren when it was new from the people who bought one to journalists and test drivers all said the same thing, it didn't matter what you'd driven before, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris or even the XJ220, the McLaren was in a league all of its own, it was like an F15 eagle in a world war 2 era dogfight of mustangs and messerschmitts. This video shows that while the maclaren isn't quite in a class of it's own anymore, it doesn't take long to call the roll.
i would say the ford GT40 or Dodge Viper would be, just from actual racing wins and actual racing records, the f1 is top notch and a monster, but just because of the US usually doing drag cars, the GT40 and Viper getting racing crowns over all comers was a monstrous hill to overcome and they dominated, i would put GT40 first (Mopar fan) Viper 2nd and F1 3rd, 4th probably Nissan or Mazda, they made some incredible machines in racing
4 turbochargers pushing air to 4 extra cylinders producing 400 more horsepower all of which being sent to 4 wheels and it barely bought the Veyron a difference of a car length at the finish line. The F1 is simply legendary.
The race was staged for the purpose of entertainment. A veyron would not lose to F1 off the line and would win with higher margin. Only place where F1 would have a chance of challenging veyron would be on a circuit.

these cars are staples in automotive history. Though the McLaren f1 is still top dog. bare bones. badass machine. the ultimate driving experience. pagani is amazing. Hennessey amazing. lambo, ferrari, bmw, bugatti, etc all brilliant. but the McLaren will always be top dog. fallowed by the ferrari f40.

the F1 has a better power/weight ratio, and modern tyres are grippier than the 1990s ones its performance figures were measured on. especially if they're sticky semi-slicks!
Consider this, a detuned F1 with only a rear wing and no front splitter with the same road car steering rack and manual transmission won the Le Mans 24 hours (of course they used carbon brakes, but still). The Road Going F1 might not beat the Veyron's time on Top Gear. Those tires are ancient. The steel brakes fade. And the road suspension is too soft for a true track machine.
Quad turbo 16 cylinders 8.0lts 1000hp Vs no turbo 12 cylinders 6.1lts 600hp. The F1 is a legend considering its age. If it was turbocharged with gizmos it would annialate the Bugatti
If the F1 had to adhere to the same 2005+ safety standards as the Veyron it would be considerably slower than it is with all the additional weight. Even with all the extra weight, the Veryon would have dusted the F1 off the line if it was using launch control. For cinematic suspense, the Veyron was handicapped with Richard Hammond driving it with no launch control in this clip. Also, keep in mind the Veyron is 14 years old now. It's only about 12 years newer than the F1.

@@LunringNassar if you put into that V12 Atmospheric S70/2 a couple of turbos you are literally destroying de essence of the F1. But yes, maybe the Bugatti would lose, but with the Turbos there's pressence of Turbo Lag and lose of Grip, because the F1 is RWD so it could be a hard mission after all.

The Veyron has been recorded time and time again (before and after this race) accelerating faster than any McLaren F1 ever has. It's not even close. Heck. Here's how nutty the difference between these two cars is: line both cars up and let the McLaren accelerate to 120 mph before setting off in the Veyron. You'll still reach 200mph before the F1. No, really. Top gear purposely didn't properly launch the car to make this race more interesting. But the fact remains, in the real world, that F1 stands no chance in a drag race.
@@Toxic2T Which for me is what counts. It’s why for instance Koenisegg walks over Bugatti. The One:1 and Regera not only have impressive as hell acceleration times (0-300 quicker than the Chiron, and the Regera 0-400 smokes it), but the fact that both cars also have decent track times. The Regera even beat a Senna on a track in Sweden. The F1 for me is still the superior car to the Veyron because of that reason.
Im 38 so I was 17 or so when the Mclaren F1 was being featured in every single automotive magazine on the rack. Yes youngsters, back then we had things called magazines that we had to flip pages in to read about our favorite cars. There was no youtube. Lol. I remember drooling over it and reading about it and I even bought Need For Speed 2 SE on PC because it had the F1 in it. And I didnt even own a PC that was capable of running the game. Lol. Thanks Daryl for letting me come over and play it on your PC. Haha. But anyway, to see it like this, with all of it's horses under the bonnet, running at full gallop is a sight to behold. Truly amazing. Modern day supercars are fast and efficient and great but the 90s are when supercars were changing the game and surpassing all known barriers back then. The designers of these modern supercars owe much of their knowledge to the McLaren F1. As we say in Texas, tip your hat and show some respect.

Naa, it still is. It's not just the performance but the whole design. It has 3 seats, quite a bit of storage space. They built it as a usable road car, but it also won Le Mans. Rowan Atkinson drove an F1 regularly for years. Other hypercars are just impractical to use in the world, including the Veyron.

Going back to this video again since I watched it 11 years ago, the shot in 4:25 - 4:27 was just absolutely brutal. It was one of the moments on this video really put all the viewers into perspective how fast these amazing technological advances can go.

The McLaren F1 is naturally aspirated , if that bugatti wasnt quad charged it wouldnt stand a chance. The McLaren gave the bugatti a fight for most of the race , a well engineered car even to this day.

It did it only when pushed to the limit (rev limiter taken off etc). Dauer 962 (more or less the same age as F1), was legitly doing over 250mph back then with 730hp (twin turbo 3.0l Porsche's flat 6).
Watch Gordon Murrays video on his latest car and he has nothing good to say about the Mclaren F1, and points out all of its flaws... . The moral of the story is as Ferdinand Porsche used to say when asked which of his cars is best?,. And he’d always say the latest one of course cause cars are improved all the time

Yup, only shows the F1 truly is the greatest car. Top speed is great and all, but the F1 is still top of it's class. The track is what matters. Now I'm wondering if the T.50 will claw back top speed. The only things that would really compete with it now are the Valkyrie and the Jesko, which are both currently holding back their top speeds. We might not know the answer for a few years still...

Me too. T.50 will certainly be the best and most pure sports car driving experience. Away from the lame all-electronic anesthesia modern cars are going. And a real Mclaren F1 son, we all were waiting for. I still find the "father" prettier though. I'd go even more alike with the F1 exterior design, but with the t50 interior and lights.

What the actual... Like Mr. Hammond said, The Veyron is technological marvel, it isn't just about the speed (even though it likes to participate in that pissing contest). It is the same as the F1, they are both kings in their own domain. Of course there will be faster cars (just like there were faster cars when F1 rulled), you could take Veyron engine, put into some 500kg shasi and it will break the hell out of any speed record, but that is not what that automobile is about. When it goes 420km/h it stands perfectly still. There is no shaking, no earshattering noise. It just exists at that speed. Every other car that participates with it in the speed contest (like Venom GT) seems like it is about to fall to atoms when reaching the top speed. Using modern technology is not cheating, it is called advancement. Not to mention the koenigsegg and all the others like it are blind project, you build car that can go 430km, but can't ride around on normal road, or survive few thousand kilometres of usage. Their technology will never be used for anything. The futuristic materials and technologies developed for Veyron, which you can quite frankly take out to go to shop) will suply Volkswagen cars down the road with advancements for years to come. It was not build for the ultimate speed, it was built as ultimate automobile. If I had to chose between those two, I probably couldn't. They are both work of artists and visionaries, statues of atomotive industry to be admired. I am just sad and tired of everyone pissing at bugatti because it isn't the fastest when it is not what it is about.
Not really, the Bugati still looks good and uniqe, even the Chirone currently looks better then any car the Mclaren looks like any other modern supercar.
ok nope if both were put in front of me I would chose the f1 don't care about comfort just care about the car I have always loved the f1 ever since I first played forza 4 and now in ever forza game I play I use the f1 as my daily racer because let's be honest the price of the f1 is just going up meaning that is the closest I will get to ever driving one

ok The Mclaren F1 is not an uncompromising supercar as Gordon Murray designed it to be a supercar you could use everyday. The luggage space is a big as a Ford Fiesta's boot, the suspension is soft and if you see them go round a track they roll about through the corners. The F1 LM is the hardcore version but the standard version is a better road car than pretty much any other supercar.
The F1 is a track car, not a 'top speed' car. Throw in some turns and braking and it won't just beat the Veyron in the 1/4 mile. The fact that it is so close in a 1 mile drag race with a car that's built entirely for top speed really just shows that the McLaren F1 is still possibly the greatest car ever made.
I am waiting for the first veyron or shiron who is made as a pure sportscar, without all the interieur, leather, luxuries and with some hundreds of kilos less. Than we will see the ultimate beast . Bugatti is a luxury car not a drag racer. MC Laren is based on Formula One car, so you can compare it to the Porsche 919 hybrid evo and the F1 would see only the back lights of the porsche on every circuit. And dont forget the Koenigsegg who is a pure racer and also faster than the F1.

Mclaren F1, Porsche 959 and Skyline GT-R R34. The holy grails in my opinion. All waaaaay ahead of thier time and all considered to be game changers in auto world.
Flash Man 240 MPH for the McLaren after 22 or 23 years, is not bad at all. There are cars at today that cost a lot more than the McLaren and are slower than the McLaren. The McLaren F1 was, is and will ever be, a legend.
You may reconsider now that Gordon Murray releases the T.50, being the F1 but better in every way and without any unnecessary modern crap that doesn't add to the driving experience.
@@h4x0y it's definitely a beautiful compliment to the McLaren F1, but honestly a copy can't bring the excitement of the F1. In the 90's following the record breaking speeds it produced, being the king of the road for as long as it was, and my personal experiences of following Ralph Lauren through Bedford Village, NY as he drove one of his two F1's... the T50 pays a wonderful homage to the F1, but unless it's going to start breaking records, sustainably breaking 300MPH, it's just a very nice and expensive replica and lacks the soul and personal connections the McLaren F1 has.
That’s an interesting way to put it. The T.50 will never break speed records the way the F1 did, let alone sustain them for over a decade. On the other hand, Gordon Murray has made clear he never cared about the numbers on the F1 (rather being the best driving experience full stop), and any great achievements are simply the result of good design. What amazes me most of the F1 is that while its speed record is astounding yet easily surpassed these days, it’s the driving experience fans claim is still unbeaten 30 years later. No one has copied the formula. T.50 is a love letter to the F1 by the same legendary creator, perfecting everything that according to Gordon Murray was wrong about the F1. Very rarely does anyone have the ability to understand ‘what makes the greatest product on earth’, followed by the know-how and the opportunity to improve every aspect of it 30 years later. And the fact that T.50 also signifies a farewell to the combustion engine makes it even more special to me.
in my opinion, the F1 won. IT may not be faster, but it does 240mph, with less cylinders, less displacement and no turbos, whereas the Bugatti has 16 cylinders,8L of displacement and 4 turbos. So if you add everything up and compare what happened, the F1 won. Either way this was an amazing race.

Though that title deserves an asterisk. No production F1 has been clocked higher than 221MPH which has been matched. The 240mph record everyone quotes was done with a prototype that had a more than 10% higher rev limit than the production version. Somehow that's not considered a modified car, so no one ever brings it up.

I never thought it looked liek a car from the future, it wasn't very outlandish compared to anything else from the mid to late 90s, however its clean design(like many other super cars of that time) holds up incredably well even surpasses many modern cars. Always will be the greatest car ever made tho
The Mclaren F1 still holds the world record of being the world's fastest natural aspirated production (for now), while the Bugatti Veyron is the world's fastest turbocharged production car (for now).

Veryron is impressive but it would be more impressive if it's engine was naturally aspirated but it's not it has 4 turbochargers which is logical that is a fast car. Mclaren f1 has no turbo no supercharger which not only make it impressive it's also a legend and it was ahead of its time for many years.

+J Dean Not really; the Veyron has a better start because of its 4WD, and it takes the lead later on because - come on! - there's no way to compete against over 1000bhp. But the ultra light weight of the McLaren explains its out-accelerating the Bugatti up to 240kph.

Naturally aspirated engine vs quad-turbocharged engine. 6 speed manual vs 7 speed dual-clutch automatic. 17 inch wheels vs 20 inch wheels. What do you expect?! If that NA engine was built today, it would produce 730-760hp, which would beat the Veyron.

Actually, the McLaren F1 is as reliable as a Camry although it may not seem like that. So I was watching a video where Gordon Murray was recalling a conversation he was having with a German owner who used to daily his McLaren to his office and he used to drive it daily on the autobahn but he never had any issues with the car. It is because the car ha so little that there is nothing to actually go wrong. Also, an almost unmodified McLaren F1 won the 24 hours of LeMans. So despite the reliability issues which most British cars suffer from, the McLaren F1 is not one of them.

The Bugatti wasn't launched on purpose to give the McLaren a chance. Hammond admitted to it himself. A real drag race would not have been this close.

True it was a massive leap forward for performance cars when it came out the fastest road car money could buy was the jaguar XJ220 which was tested to a top speed of 217 mph and up till then the top speed of supercars had gone up in very small increments of 1 or 2mph for example the Porsche 959 was king at 199mph and then came the Ferrari F40 at 201, then it was 205, 207, 212 and then up to 217, the McLaren's top speed of 240 mph was a leap forward that didn't just take the crown from the jaguar, it made the jaguar look positively sluggish, almost everyone who drove a McLaren when it was new from the people who bought one to journalists and test drivers all said the same thing, it didn't matter what you'd driven before, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris or even the XJ220, the McLaren was in a league all of its own, it was like an F15 eagle in a world war 2 era dogfight of mustangs and messerschmitts.
This video shows that while the maclaren isn't quite in a class of it's own anymore, it doesn't take long to call the roll.

i would say the ford GT40 or Dodge Viper would be, just from actual racing wins and actual racing records, the f1 is top notch and a monster, but just because of the US usually doing drag cars, the GT40 and Viper getting racing crowns over all comers was a monstrous hill to overcome and they dominated, i would put GT40 first (Mopar fan) Viper 2nd and F1 3rd, 4th probably Nissan or Mazda, they made some incredible machines in racing

The race was staged for the purpose of entertainment. A veyron would not lose to F1 off the line and would win with higher margin. Only place where F1 would have a chance of challenging veyron would be on a circuit.

Consider this, a detuned F1 with only a rear wing and no front splitter with the same road car steering rack and manual transmission won the Le Mans 24 hours (of course they used carbon brakes, but still).
The Road Going F1 might not beat the Veyron's time on Top Gear. Those tires are ancient. The steel brakes fade. And the road suspension is too soft for a true track machine.

If the F1 had to adhere to the same 2005+ safety standards as the Veyron it would be considerably slower than it is with all the additional weight. Even with all the extra weight, the Veryon would have dusted the F1 off the line if it was using launch control. For cinematic suspense, the Veyron was handicapped with Richard Hammond driving it with no launch control in this clip. Also, keep in mind the Veyron is 14 years old now. It's only about 12 years newer than the F1.

It's not even close. Heck. Here's how nutty the difference between these two cars is: line both cars up and let the McLaren accelerate to 120 mph before setting off in the Veyron. You'll still reach 200mph before the F1. No, really.
Top gear purposely didn't properly launch the car to make this race more interesting. But the fact remains, in the real world, that F1 stands no chance in a drag race.

Which for me is what counts. It’s why for instance Koenisegg walks over Bugatti. The One:1 and Regera not only have impressive as hell acceleration times (0-300 quicker than the Chiron, and the Regera 0-400 smokes it), but the fact that both cars also have decent track times. The Regera even beat a Senna on a track in Sweden. The F1 for me is still the superior car to the Veyron because of that reason.
Im 38 so I was 17 or so when the Mclaren F1 was being featured in every single automotive magazine on the rack. Yes youngsters, back then we had things called magazines that we had to flip pages in to read about our favorite cars. There was no youtube. Lol. I remember drooling over it and reading about it and I even bought Need For Speed 2 SE on PC because it had the F1 in it. And I didnt even own a PC that was capable of running the game. Lol. Thanks Daryl for letting me come over and play it on your PC. Haha. But anyway, to see it like this, with all of it's horses under the bonnet, running at full gallop is a sight to behold. Truly amazing. Modern day supercars are fast and efficient and great but the 90s are when supercars were changing the game and surpassing all known barriers back then. The designers of these modern supercars owe much of their knowledge to the McLaren F1. As we say in Texas, tip your hat and show some respect.

Naa, it still is. It's not just the performance but the whole design. It has 3 seats, quite a bit of storage space. They built it as a usable road car, but it also won Le Mans. Rowan Atkinson drove an F1 regularly for years. Other hypercars are just impractical to use in the world, including the Veyron.

It did it only when pushed to the limit (rev limiter taken off etc). Dauer 962 (more or less the same age as F1), was legitly doing over 250mph back then with 730hp (twin turbo 3.0l Porsche's flat 6).

Yup, only shows the F1 truly is the greatest car. Top speed is great and all, but the F1 is still top of it's class. The track is what matters. Now I'm wondering if the T.50 will claw back top speed. The only things that would really compete with it now are the Valkyrie and the Jesko, which are both currently holding back their top speeds. We might not know the answer for a few years still...

What the actual... Like Mr. Hammond said, The Veyron is technological marvel, it isn't just about the speed (even though it likes to participate in that pissing contest). It is the same as the F1, they are both kings in their own domain. Of course there will be faster cars (just like there were faster cars when F1 rulled), you could take Veyron engine, put into some 500kg shasi and it will break the hell out of any speed record, but that is not what that automobile is about. When it goes 420km/h it stands perfectly still. There is no shaking, no earshattering noise. It just exists at that speed. Every other car that participates with it in the speed contest (like Venom GT) seems like it is about to fall to atoms when reaching the top speed. Using modern technology is not cheating, it is called advancement.
Not to mention the koenigsegg and all the others like it are blind project, you build car that can go 430km, but can't ride around on normal road, or survive few thousand kilometres of usage. Their technology will never be used for anything. The futuristic materials and technologies developed for Veyron, which you can quite frankly take out to go to shop) will suply Volkswagen cars down the road with advancements for years to come. It was not build for the ultimate speed, it was built as ultimate automobile.
If I had to chose between those two, I probably couldn't. They are both work of artists and visionaries, statues of atomotive industry to be admired.
I am just sad and tired of everyone pissing at bugatti because it isn't the fastest when it is not what it is about.

ok The Mclaren F1 is not an uncompromising supercar as Gordon Murray designed it to be a supercar you could use everyday. The luggage space is a big as a Ford Fiesta's boot, the suspension is soft and if you see them go round a track they roll about through the corners. The F1 LM is the hardcore version but the standard version is a better road car than pretty much any other supercar.

The F1 is a track car, not a 'top speed' car. Throw in some turns and braking and it won't just beat the Veyron in the 1/4 mile.
The fact that it is so close in a 1 mile drag race with a car that's built entirely for top speed really just shows that the McLaren F1 is still possibly the greatest car ever made.

I am waiting for the first veyron or shiron who is made as a pure sportscar, without all the interieur, leather, luxuries and with some hundreds of kilos less. Than we will see the ultimate beast . Bugatti is a luxury car not a drag racer. MC Laren is based on Formula One car, so you can compare it to the Porsche 919 hybrid evo and the F1 would see only the back lights of the porsche on every circuit. And dont forget the Koenigsegg who is a pure racer and also faster than the F1.

In the 90's following the record breaking speeds it produced, being the king of the road for as long as it was, and my personal experiences of following Ralph Lauren through Bedford Village, NY as he drove one of his two F1's... the T50 pays a wonderful homage to the F1, but unless it's going to start breaking records, sustainably breaking 300MPH, it's just a very nice and expensive replica and lacks the soul and personal connections the McLaren F1 has.

On the other hand, Gordon Murray has made clear he never cared about the numbers on the F1 (rather being the best driving experience full stop), and any great achievements are simply the result of good design. What amazes me most of the F1 is that while its speed record is astounding yet easily surpassed these days, it’s the driving experience fans claim is still unbeaten 30 years later. No one has copied the formula. T.50 is a love letter to the F1 by the same legendary creator, perfecting everything that according to Gordon Murray was wrong about the F1. Very rarely does anyone have the ability to understand ‘what makes the greatest product on earth’, followed by the know-how and the opportunity to improve every aspect of it 30 years later. And the fact that T.50 also signifies a farewell to the combustion engine makes it even more special to me.
in my opinion, the F1 won. IT may not be faster, but it does 240mph, with less cylinders, less displacement and no turbos, whereas the Bugatti has 16 cylinders,8L of displacement and 4 turbos. So if you add everything up and compare what happened, the F1 won. Either way this was an amazing race.

Though that title deserves an asterisk. No production F1 has been clocked higher than 221MPH which has been matched. The 240mph record everyone quotes was done with a prototype that had a more than 10% higher rev limit than the production version. Somehow that's not considered a modified car, so no one ever brings it up.

I never thought it looked liek a car from the future, it wasn't very outlandish compared to anything else from the mid to late 90s, however its clean design(like many other super cars of that time) holds up incredably well even surpasses many modern cars. Veryron is impressive but it would be more impressive if it's engine was naturally aspirated but it's not it has 4 turbochargers which is logical that is a fast car. Mclaren f1 has no turbo no supercharger which not only make it impressive it's also a legend and it was ahead of its time for many years.
