    New Order at their peak IMHO. Geniuses, melding punk sensibilities with electronic dance. Bought every vinyl they made in the 80's and all their CDs from then on. Still have the punched sleeve 12" that Factory lost money on with every copy sold due to the cost of manufacture to make the single look like a then, high tech, 5.25" floppy disk.

    • @johndododoe1411

      You mean Hooky was miming the drums, or playing them shitly to annoy Bernard?
      When they played live on TOTP Hooky hits the drum one time too many with his hand and there's no sound, so I wondered if he did actually mime the drums?

    • @azynkron

    • @DustyCustard
      @DustyCustard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      With the very noteable exception of New Order, who insisted on playing live each time or they wouldn't do it. Hence my enquiry above, as it seems odd Hooky would mime drums when they made such a song and dance about being allowed to play live.

    Great performance, really like the glossy kind of effect this video footage has, also I really enjoy the sound of the bass guitar when New Order play this song live. It’s funny though, every time I see Bernard and Steven enthusiastically talking about synths I can picture Hooky going “would you get on with the bloody song already” haha, but I think that clash between traditional rock instruments and electronics like drum machines and synthesizers is what makes the band unique.

      It was the same in some respects. You had the big record companies, radio stations, TV trying to keep everything mainstream and commercial as possible. You have it better in some ways. You can access non mainstream music online, go to the bands sites and through specialised digital radio stations there's many more options. On the BBC we had an hour a night of John Peel, some alternative stuff through the 2 Kershaws, occasionally some stuff on late night TV, very occasionally on totp, NME, Sounds, word of mouth or go to the gig. Gate keepers everywhere. It wasn't all better then.

    Can you feel Barney thinking "stop that shit Hooky and stop playing over me"? Meanwhile, never realizing that Hook's part actually make the song great. The tension is obvious to me.

    • @dogmart
      @dogmart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Yes. If you read Hooky's memoir about Joy Division, he is *very* critical of Bernard being a control freak--both before, during, and after Joy Division. I think Hooky's books post 2007 have been cathartic for him--a lot of pent up anger at Bernard. To be fair, I think the evidence is there that Bernard was a control freak about the group, especially after Ian died. If you read Brian Edge's book, New Order + Joy Division: Pleasures and Wayward Distractions, I believe he quotes Hooky as saying something to the effect, "Bernard can be a genius, but there's a fine line between being a genius and being a dickhead."

      @Forestgravy90 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Possibly he was a control freak to an extent, but Hooky was a very abrasive personality. The way he is behaving now with the whole royalties dispute is very childish imo, and it is pretty telling that Stephen and Gillian are perfectly happy to work with barney nowadays and produced a cracking album together, while Hooky plays Joy division covers with his son and writes books laden with bitterness. His revelations about his marriage to Caroline Aherne 3 months after she died from cancer was a classless move as well.

      Well, as Peter Hook basically says in a youtube interview, 'Barney's account of the events are false, mine are true, and if Stephen was not in the band with him and was on his own, Stephen's story would be much like mine.' Stephen never says anything, and never fights with Barney, so why should he mind playing in the band and making easy money? I have read both Peter Hook's book and Bernard's book. I wouldn't say Peter Hook's book is laden with bitterness any more than Barney's is. My impression (I obviously don't know either of them personally), is that Peter gives a factual account of what happened (not just the breakup, but every year of New Order's existence, some really hilarious anecdotes, great details on the recording sessions, etc.), while Bernard only really talks about himself and mentions the others in passing, and writes the book as if it's a work of fiction but true; by that I mean he interjects descriptive language about events which make them seem fabricated. Bernard also implies credit of a LOT of what New Order created. The end of Bernard's book gets really new-age like, while he's trying really hard to convince the reader that he's completely happy (he struggles with depression), and that he only wishes Peter Hook well, while in the meantime slagging him left and right. And for all that Peter Hook complains about Barney in his book, he continually says the Barney was less of a pain than other lead singers he got close to! Not to mentioned Peter Hook refers to Barney as the best guitarist in Manchester (better than Johnny Marr), and a musical genius, but a twat. In fact, if you want to sum up their relationship, from what I got out of the book: Peter and Barney always fought a bit, it was healthy, Barney was a twat and had a controlling personality, Peter Hook got sober late into the production of "Get Ready", and nothing really changed to cause a breakup except that now Bernard was not so easy to take without the booze and drugs and partying, so they split.As for the "modern new order" producing a "cracking album"...New Order hasn't done that since "Power Corruption and Lies". They are so mainstream and formulaic these days it's boring.As for Pete Hook playing covers with his son...if I were a musician, it would be a dream to pass that on to my son and get to play with him live, I do not fault Peter for that at all. And, if you remember when that all started, Bernard said he would never "go back in the catalogue" to play those old songs, but he's doing it now, isn't he?
